D. José nasceu em 1714 e subiu ao trono em 1750, com a idade de 36 anos. Enquanto foi príncipe do Brasil e herdeiro da Coroa, o seu pai, o rei D. João V, nunca lhe deu espaço para demonstrar a sua aptidão para a governação. Tendo deixado pouca correspondência, de D. José pouco mais se sabe de certo para além do seu gosto pela ópera e pela caça. O seu reinado, que decorreu entre 1750 e 1777, ficou marcado pelo controverso “consulado” do Marquês de Pombal. Qual foi o verdadeiro papel de D. José na política e polémicas do seu tempo? Será que o Marquês de Pombal foi um mero executor da vontade do Rei, ou será que este abandonou a governação nas mãos daquele?
