Neste episódio especial de verão, Henrique Monteiro e Lourenço Pereira Coutinho conversam sobre os verões do passado e a evolução da moda de “ir a banhos”. Esta começou na segunda metade do século XIX, numa altura em que os banhos de mar eram receitados com fins terapêuticos. Em Portugal, a “temporada de banhos” tornou-se moda a partir da década de 1870, quando os reis D. Luís e D. Maria Pia começaram a frequentar a praia de Cascais, sendo seguidos pela Corte, pela chamada “boa sociedade” e, ainda, por pessoas “desconhecidas” mas endinheiradas, desejosas de “verem e serem vistas”. Então, a temporada de banhos começava no final do verão e estendia-se pelo mês de outubro. As pessoas iam vestidas para a praia, não se expunham ao sol e evitavam o calor. A praia era frequentada de manhã e, da parte da tarde, os “banhistas” entretinham-se com burricadas e piqueniques. A partir da década de 1960, a generalização da “ida a banhos” e a “descoberta” das praias do sul, genericamente mais quentes que as do norte, contribuíram para modificar os hábitos balneares dos portugueses.
