Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to afl W today.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm Alex Gonnley and we are here for a massive
season ten preview. We saw North Melbourne go undefeated last
year in an amazing season and the question that everyone
is asking can they go back to back and can
they go unbeaten again? To join me on this show
all season on AFLW today are two North Melbourne fans
and I'll tell you what they are pumped to talk
(00:23):
about North Melbourne because this is the one part of
their club that's successful. I'm joined by Code Sports journalist
Jess Robinson, fresh from Captain's Day this morning.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yes, thank you, Yeah, happy to be here, so pumped
for the tenth AFLW season.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
And over there the stats guy at Lee mccallian.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
He's the one of us that's actually held the Premiership
Cup last year. Yes, I'm gonna get the photos sent
in so we can put it up on screen now.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
But how are you start going?
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Oh, I'm still rarely in that moment that and I
was unbelievable just running around on the ground and just
celebrating North which is very good to see, very good.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
To see you actually took full advantage of that media
past and we will love to see hopefully get another one.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
I'm not against it if that happens once again.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
But here we are to preview all eighteen teams this
season the AFL debbie. At the end, we'll talk about
who we think will be the premier, who we think
is gonna be the best and fairest, leading goal kicker,
rising start, and a riser and slider. Last year is
safe to say Nared my slider and the Demons. We'll
get to that later. We've split up the teams, six
of us all or three of us. Six teams each
start off with the Radelaide Crows. Stats Guy, that's your
(01:22):
team last year, eight and three, record top four the
last four seasons and knocked out in a prelim last year. Okay,
stats guy hit us with some predictions for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
I mentioned before the last four season. They're finishing the
top four. They've got to do it again. They're clearly
I think the third or fourth best side, and this
one I'm going to go. I'm gonna put him into
our top three, So I'm going to go third for
this one and easily top three.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
Maronofs is going to take them there and just dominate.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Yes, I mean I'm not as confident in top three,
but I've got them in fourth Okay, not far off,
but yeah, still having a great year.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I mean, I'm going to be on my own here.
I've got like a range that I'm going with, not
a specific position. Which will notice as this goes on
that there's a lot of teams they are going to
try and fit in the A.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
It's definitely not going to happen.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
I have them third to sixth because they got belted
by the D's in match sim over the weekend, and
we saw last year that the teams who got well
beaten really sort.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Of struggled, and that Adelaide were well beaten.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
A little bit of a concern at their best there
are they are third to six Well, I mean North
did win theirs by ninety.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
So don't lose to the dogs as well.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
I have no idea.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
It was the first one. Always trust them.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
We don't talk about Yeah, you don't talk about the losses.
Let's move on to last year's A runner up. Just
the Brisbane Lions who went nine and two, finished third
on ladder and lost that Grand Final to North Melbourne.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Well, I mean these guys are always so strong. They've
got a couple of flags their name. They've been runners
up what four times now, so I don't think they're
really going to fade off. They've had a quiet off
season trade period that going into the twenty twenty five
season with a similar line up, except they welcome an
explosive half forward from Ireland that's a dually Lily Baker
(02:57):
Academy pick in the draft to boost to the and
a mid defender and Claudia Wright also taken in the draft.
So of course I've seen them in the past two
Grand finals against the Ruse. They've got one. They're coming
off a season heartache. Do we see them fade away?
Do we see them drop a little bit? I don't
think so.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
They're too good.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
I think there was a stage and I think it
was earlier in the scene like, oh they can they
fade off because North smashed them. But they're still going
to be right up there because every time they've lost
the last couple of seasons they bounced back with a win.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
I think they'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, I think they'll be fine. They've got they're a
team stacked of all Australian players. They've got their sole
coach Craig Starch. Bitch's back is continuing at the Helm.
Although yeah they did have a bit of a tussle
in the practice match against the Swans.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
You oh yeah, no.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
That got me very excited about the Swans and not
super concerned about Brisbane because they came out of the
blocks in that match and looked really good five minutes in.
As a Swans fan, I was like, oh man, but
you saw bits and pieces from you know, so if
Conway who did her little bits here, you're in there.
Jade Allinger dead set was attracted to the footy at
one stage. It was just always in her hands and
(04:04):
you saw bits and pieces from Courtney Hotter as well
as Dak Davids. Like it's enough for me to be like, no, no,
that'll be fine. Like they showed their bits and pieces
of brilliance and it was a practice match, so yeah,
they're going to be good.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
I've got them finishing top two once again.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Of course. Yeah, they'll skip up back leading from the front.
Bricone and she had twenty one disposals, nine tackles. Just
a cruisy day for her. Charlie Mullins and the Rock.
She didn't have the impact that she usually does, but
like still clearance work around the ground was great. So yeah,
I don't think there's much to worry about. I don't
have them in the top two though, I've got them
(04:40):
in the top four.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
Okay, top four. Yeah, I'm going to go I'm going
to go second. I'm going to go second.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
I think there's some obvious choices for number one, but second,
they're going to be right up there.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Again, they're just a classy team.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
As you mentioned, we you could name like fifteen of
their players that could be like all over the next
copy years.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
They're so good.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, I didn't mention Ruby Spark was everywhere in that
practice match too. She looks as fit as a fiddle.
But yeah, they'll finish top four for sure, if not second.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Moving on to Carlton, who last season went four and seven.
My team here fourteenth on the ladder was sixteen points.
They were weird last year. They belted Geelong in one
game and looked insipid in others. It was a very
weird season. They absolutely smashed GW West over the weekend
in Sydney in a practice match with Tara b first
game for them after coming across from the Suns and
(05:24):
Sophie McKay kicked two goals new draftd wearing the fifty
five because you can't wear the.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Number five, so what are two five's fifty five?
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Keilly Skipper kicked two goals plus Brie Harrington who's bre
Moody got married in the offseason and letter kick popped
in with the goal, thought Maddi Gerr and just had
the footy attached to it at one point. It was
a really horrendous day in Sydney as the weather was
over the weekend and Mimi Hill was really good in
midfield transition. So is it a sign that GW West
is still horrendous or that Carlton have gotten better?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I think we'll find out over the first couple of rounds.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
Yeah, I reckon Carlton have gone better.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
He got the more mcas you can get into just
in general, the better because everyone that's ever gone into
that club being and McKay just turned into a star.
So you've obviously got Abbey mckaye now their captain, now
their captain as well. So Sophie McKay had just even
shown in pre seasons and yes, and the Schultz exactly right.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yes, the younger Vers and Poppy Schultz basically the younger
sister of Matilda as well. But you sort of look
at their work last season they were a big secondary
clear and still secondary stoppage team because Kealy Cherard had
a bunch of the footy last year. Is their best
and fair She's probably going to step up once again,
But is she going to get tagged because teams will
be like, oh, you're probably their best user of the footy.
(06:36):
If you stop her and you can beat them around
the contest, that's probably the way to go. Because you
have a look at the list without Harrington, Darcy, Vsi
and Pound, they.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Are really inexperience.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
So there's still a long way to go, but there
might be more signs than last year.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
That good.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Cool.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yeah, I've got I've got them improving for a couple
of spots on the ladder. So they came in fourteenth
last season. I've got them in well.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
I've got I had him in twelfth as well. Just
I think the other teams around him I think have
better lists. But like you said, they're young guns. I
think the next couple of years, maybe in the next
two year, they'll probably make the finals.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
I'd say, okay, cool, that is an early big call.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
No, I've got them from like eleventh to fifteenth, similar
last year, but maybe they get you know, five wins
on they go five and six instead of four and seven.
That Round one game against the Pies will be that'll
tell us where they're at, which does lead us to
last year's Wooden Spooners Collingwood who went one and ten
eighteenth on the ladder. Everyone was injured last year for Collingwood,
but they got Ash CenTra.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
They got Ash CenTra, which is yeah, obviously a massive
in the number one pick obviously in the afl W
twenty twenty four draft. Known as probably the best ready
made afl W play. That's what they're calling it. Heading
into this one, amazing bowl. Use just a ball magnet.
I'm very excited to watch CenTra and this one. They
had a tough run in twenty four, as Alex said,
so many injuries, lots of young players coming through rebuilding.
(07:54):
He had Ruby Slisher just stepped up into the midfield
obviously usually she was back from injury too, back from injury,
and she was great. Now they're captain in twenty twenty five,
which I think is a really good move. She's their
most vocal player on field. She's shown that she can
play in pretty much every position one there BNF, so
I'm actually really excited for that one. In terms of
some key inns as well. We've got Mateya Breed talking
before the show. She's returning from a knee injury, so
(08:15):
she'll be out for the first couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
But awesome pick up.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I hope she can find her form after this knee
surgery because she was amazing at Hawthorne. I think that's
going to be one of the best pickups in the
competition and just help Colin would take that next step
a lit of it? Would you guys have grown that one?
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Oh? Absolutely, I'm excited to see ash in full display
and fans AFLW fans you get to see her at
the season opener. That's pretty exciting.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Actually, that's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Awesome Thursday or August fourteenth at i Com Park. Make
sure you get down or you're watching it on CAO
or Channel seven or beyond both. Sure, but that last
year we said everyone was injured something that really hurt.
Like they're ways of using the footy because you're getting
the replacement players in that you've met on Tuesday for
the first time.
Speaker 5 (08:57):
That was tough.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
How do we set up? What are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (08:59):
And I think that's what sort of it didn't It
didn't help Collingwood, but it was probably a good thing.
You know, if you completely bought them out and you
get a couple of new players in like Breeden CenTra,
you know there are some positive signs there because they
beat Port Adelaide last weekend too, and Port you know,
prelim finalists, so there's a bit to come out there
because also no Breed Center was held back from that
game as well, so they may jump up the ladder.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Struggling to see it given how bad they were last year.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
But if everyone's fit in that same realm as Carlton,
sort of twelfth to sixteenth, I don't think they're going
to be the worst team of the league.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
But I don't think they're going to be the best.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Yeah, I think we've similar mindset here. I've got them
in fifteenth.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Yeah, I'm gonna go fourteenth. I think they can jump
four spots one. They've got some good young players coming through.
I think the injuries will it'll show because it'll be
like Oh, they're not know any of the worst team
I think.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
And also we all forget they had their SNC Coach
League like three weeks before the season started last year too,
like everything last year.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Yeah, and when you're having players that haven't played together,
there was players playing in all types of positions.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
This year a lot more structured, they'll be, they'll be
a lot better.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Moving on to the Essen and Bombers, who last year
when six four and one made the finals, went down
to Frio in the first final. As far as preseason four,
I got smashed by North Melbourne on the weekend by
about ninety points.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Which you expect.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
It's not a good way to start the season though,
Like if you're feeling good and then you're running to
North Melton who wants to play North Melbourne in the preseason,
it doesn't seem fair.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Well, one of the first preseason game North had they
left off their players, so the pop position was like, oh,
that's that's handy, but not yet, not after that.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
So like the bad news out of that is Maddy
Gay hurt her knee. Oh, which is horrendous not an
ACL Have you heard anything this morning, Jess, because I've
I only know that it's not an acl.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Nothing was talked about, but that's a big loss, especially
with such a short season, like there's not a huge
time to kind of, you know, get back. But fingers crossed.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
That's another reason to have the longest season because when
a player gets injured just before the season, in the
middle of the season, Oh, it's like a minor injury
and you're out for ninety percent of the season.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Help me, did you with like a you know, a
standard six week CAMMI, it's hard the.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Season aactly, Yeah, it's frustrating briefly, So.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
You have a look at last year, like Bonnie two
good obviously hurt her knee in that first game, like
we were there. That collision that she had was just
absolutely gross. Yes, she only played four games and she
was half fit for two of them, so you get
two legitimate games out of Bonnie and the fact that
they got six wins last year's probably testament to them
because that first game against Fremantle we had some concerns.
And then you you look in at how they used
(11:23):
the footy last year with Maddie Gay was the main
distributor across half back. I did it all written here, Oh,
they're probably going to Tiger, which is similar to what
they do in the so they'll chip it around similar
to what they do in the men's team, which is
weirds as Prosparcus and Nansco and contested beasts.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Ye like, that's probably.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
The improvement for them is to get in and under
get first year to the footy and get it to
their forwards. But the worry is Steph Wales is out
to the middle of the year with her knee as well.
They've already been hit by the injury bug and we
haven't even started the season.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
This isially like the men's team, isn't it the injury buck.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
That's brutal. Yeah, it's tough.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
So they've also lost Amber Clark, Paige Scott and Fan
lun Of also left. The one I want to flag
Grace Brooker. Interesting pick up as a category rookie, former
All Blood, really rugby union player, former All Black. This Yeah,
I just said there's some contested beasts in there, so
it's going to run through throw her in the midfield
(12:18):
with Nancecorn and Prisparcus and oh that's not going to
be fun for the opposition to.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
She could be at hatchild type in the midfield through
some people I feel like would be good.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
He helps someone take a specy with like a lineout
technique that could work there. So with some of these
early injuries is what they have as well. We haven't
obviously mentioned Amy Gaylor. We love what she did last year.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
It's going to be a second season as well, like
she was so clean with the footy. I'm struggling to
see them making the finals again already, and it's it's
not idea like, there's obviously a host of injury issues
that you know, it's going on to the men's and
it's sort of seemingly floating through this women's list as well.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
I've got them missing the finals.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Yeah, I've got them slipping down.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
I'm gonna I'm going to go yeah around that twelfth
to the thirties mark. I think they won't be too bad,
but the injuries are going to be tough.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Yeah, yep.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Moving across to a team who we thought were going
to be killed by injury last year but ended up
making the finals having a really good season Fremantle Dockers
who went eight and three last year, Jess.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
They sure did. They brought in a whole lot of
height in their off season, so Ellie Parker and Indy
Strom a couple of tools drafted. Bella Smith comes in
from Sydney. We saw the return of their skipper and
Stanitt from her acl injury that kept her sidelined last season,
so she came back on the weekends practice match against
the Saints. The really wet and wild ye had a
(13:37):
great week. Yeah, it's one of those teams where I
just don't know where the chips are going to fall.
They're going in with a new approach. They've got a
lot of height, a lot of tools. I actually spoke
to Ang at the captain's call and she's a lot
more confident and she's very excited to have some tall
forwards to get the ball to. So I think we're
going to see a different style of play from the Dockers.
(13:59):
You know, they came in fifth last year, they did
pretty well, so I've still got them kind of just
creeping into finals. I think, you know, with a new
look kind of gameplay. Well, I don't know, we'll see
how it pans out for them.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Yeah, especially with the tools. The best teams in the
comp often won through their toes. North have about sixteen
everyone who.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
More than other sports. Afi W.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
If you have tools that can take a mark, then
you're very handy. So they've got so many good tools.
You've got tools in the roock, you got tools down
four tols down back. I think that actually might help.
And that's why I reckon they sneak into my as well.
I'm going to put them around the eighth of Mark.
I reckon, I'll just sneak in. But they're gonna have
a slow start because of those new sort of players.
I think they might lose the first couple of games
just adjusting to it all, and then then they'll bounce back.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Yeah, they only get a couple of looks at it
before the season starts, so you know, yeah, they need
some time to get their their run and carry through
the team.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Absolutely, I'm up and about on the Dockers.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Like Kiara Bowers is also back as well from having
another child, and it looks like, you know, she's just
back to her best already. She'll have a thousand POSSESSI
we love what Gabby Newton did last year of well,
we haven't even talked about Mim Strong from one of
the players in the ruck. Ye your favorite tie as well? Yes, yes,
so players and Bellasmith coming across from the Swan's, had
a very good finish to her season, kicked a bunch
(15:14):
of goals later as the Swans was like, ah, just
what we need to lose a toll forward. But Frio
last year showed that when they moved the ball and
now that's sort of everyone's fit because they had a
lot of knee injuries like McCarthy as well, a lot
of players missed games and they still made the finals.
Like they're probably going to be better again. I've got
them making the top eight, similar position last year, fifth
(15:34):
to eighth. I reckon They're in the finals for sure.
Geelong the weirdest team of last year. They is the
weirdest team, the weirdest team of twenty twenty four. They
drew with North Melbourne.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
They did they score a Goalian's Cup and I can't
remember that that game. I think they got one.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
I think I remember we were watching that game.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
It was really weird. But they went four six and one,
finished tenth on l eighteen points. Obviously, Prisparcus last season
we thought she wasn't fit all year. On the weekend
they've absolutely mauled the Gold Coast Suns and she looked
so back. It wasn't funny. It's like, oh, yeah, you're
like really good and I can't wait to watch you
(16:13):
this year. But then it's like you look at the
forward line with Maloney, Bella Smith, Chloe Sheer up for it.
This is a very dangerous team that's going to be
advantage by having a weaker draw this year. They need
to strengthen up a bit defensively because going back to
that weird Carlton.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Loss, Yeah, that was fad games.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Chantell Emonson's not playing this year, expecting your TiAl congratulations
to her. Her kicking out of defense was good. But
then you look at the midfield. We've talked about presparkas,
but you've got McDonald and Morrison. That's almost as good
a trio as you can get. That's up there with
your Adelaide's, Brisbanes and Norse.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
They're all going to average over twenty two touches. I'd
say twenty three even when they're elite.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, they are very dangerous with the footy and you
almost feel like this is like in the next year
or two with their list, they need to capitalize on
it or it's going to be a really badly missed
opportunity if lost Darcy Maloney, who's gone to the Swans
as well. This list is good enough, but I'm very
confused by it.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Yeah, I pretty much echo that same sentiment. I've still
got them definitely up well and truly in the finals
they'll be contending. I just need to get a string
of good performances together, and I mean it's too long.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Yeah, I miss the club in general, just breed success.
I think they're going to be really, really good this year.
I think Maloney was unbelievable second in the most goals.
I think she can take that next step and kick
the most goals on that's a bit of a spoiler
for later. And then their midfeld, as you said, all
through those midfielders could be the best midfielder at other clubs.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
So I really really have rate them, Hailey. If you
want to hear my prediction, why not, I'll give you.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
I'm going to go fourth. I'm going to go them
top four. That's a big jump, I know, but tenth
to fourth. This season they were the best most exciting
team at four six and one I've ever seen last year,
so I genuinely think they can finish in the top four.
If you can get that close to North Melbourne and
no one else did, then you can make a jump
the next season.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
I reckon, the.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Man makes a point, makes it very good.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
I mean we left that blank on our notes. I
did not know where.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Yeah, that was not on purposely. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Guess why they're in that gluttony of teams that can
make the eight or just miss.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
I've got them six to tenth.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
I feel like when they they.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Play the Swans in round four, one of those two
teams will make it and the other one or miss.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
I reckon that's that's that could be the key. I
reckon Geelong will beat them by forty points.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
I'm driving down there with my fiance was a Geelong fan.
I don't need that in my life.
Speaker 5 (18:35):
Well, let's still go down. It'll be a good game.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
I'm going one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
I love that you've got the fixture just memorized. All
the Son's games are just.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
Ready to go.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Three opportunities in Victoria, and I say Victoria because there's
one in Casey, one at Gumba and the other one
is the Victoria Parker, which is ten minutes from my
front door. So God bless Victoria park Very. I said, yeah,
just missing the finals for them. But let's move on
to the Gold Coast Sons, who last year went one
at nine and one finished seventeenth on the ladder on
six points. It's not been a pretty start to the
(19:06):
preseason for them. I will start with the highlight before
I throw to you, Jess Havana Harris is awesome and
I cannot wait to see her play footy the Unicorn.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Yes, yeah, as you mentioned, tough viewing for suns Vans fans.
Their practice match, as we just spoke about against the
Cats that copped an absolute domination, only managed one goal.
They also copped a huge seventy five point whack from
Brisbon in their match sim earlier a couple of weeks ago. Now,
I think the only kind of bright light that fans
(19:36):
can take away from those games. Charlie Robottoms to me,
she's a star, superstar. You know how many all Australians
and how it's very well accoladed. She it's just the
pressure cookar around there. She's got thirteen tackles twenty three
disposals against the Cats. But I guess when your team
doesn't have much of the ball, you gotta go chase it.
So good on Charlie Lily Mith and comes in from
(19:59):
the d Adds plenty of depths and leadership, so a
good replacement for someone like Ali Drennan in that leadership position.
They've had a last minute replacement player coming from the
Quaffle from their Southport team, so Taylor Gregory comes in
(20:19):
for the Suns. She's a mature age tall, which you
know they've been talking about height and how important tools are.
All their draft d's have come from the academy team.
It's pretty interesting. So coach by ray Shaw, bitter youth
coming through might be another development looking season for them.
I think we could all probably agree that it's going
(20:41):
to be a bottom.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
Four, yeah, I think so.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
I like how that they've got the players coming through
that they've all played together in the academy, so I
think they will gull pretty quickly like playing together the
next couple of years. But it's not this year for
the son I think I got them seventeenth at the
at best really because I think they're going to struggle
with so are they probably the youngest team. I say
they they'd be the youngest team once they got.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Yeah, second or third youngest to the I think like
Swan's and West.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
Coast Okay, yeah but that Yeah, I was looking.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
I was looking at these stats this morning, like West
Coast are really young too, But you look at this
Obviously they've lost their captain, which isn't great in the
off season, and their drop off last season was like
they had a home final in twenty twenty three. Yeah, yeah,
they drop off like we haven't talked about. Obviously, we
love it. Claudia Whitfort does, and and Lucy singleer as well.
It's like they've got those good bits and pieces around
(21:33):
in the midfield. They didn't have a great year with
injury last year as well, but their defense was dreadful.
That's where they need to tighten up. And Reshaw was
a dashing half back for this one and Collingwood back
in the day. Obviously coach North Melbourne too, like seems
like a great coach.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
Yeah, Like, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
And Daisy Darcy is in for another long year. But
you know, if there's incremental improvement throughout the year and
they're not getting blown out each week like they were,
that'll be the good thing for them.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Yeahah, skids of improvement. Yeah, we can hope for.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, I've got the bottom four as well.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
GWS stats guy. Another team who struggled last year. They
went one nine and one. They drew at the Gold Coast.
That was at marnic Arra. Well that was a wild draw.
There was a shot after the siren to draw it. Yeah,
one nine to one, finished sixteenth and they were inconsistent after.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
I think they smacked the dogs in round one and
didn't win again.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Yeah, they struggled after that. They just struggled with consistency
heading forward. They got the solid pace off half back.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Through the midfield.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
You got Eilish Odoud who was one of the most
exciting players you'll you'll see the last couple of years
the Irish ruck right in the ruck.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
They're just taking it out of the midfield. She was
absolutely awesome.
Speaker 4 (22:36):
Sixteen disposals and averaging four clearances in her first season
coming over from Ireland. Was absolutely awesome. Got Beck Beason
in there, won their Best and Fairest. Their midfield is
actually really good. It's just the big players at the
end of the end of the ground that really struggled.
And then their forward entries. A lot of their players
just sort of bombs it in and really really struggled
with that one. There's some key ins and actually got
Nikola Barr, who was a real leader. She's gone to
(22:57):
Saint Kilda, so I think that's a big loss. She
had a few in but I still think that's a
big loss. But they've brought in some experience through Eleanor Brown.
She's a store from the Dogs, hasn't played the last
couple of seasons through injury. So that's the You take
out Nicola bar who thinks a really good player, you're
bringing Brown who actually was a good player but had
some injuries in things.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Lost Greson as well down back and she was delisted
but was always leaving.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Yeah, that's right. So I'm a little bit worried about
them this year. Just a lot of list changes overall,
a lot of young players building. Some of the young
players that we love. Friend of the Show Caitlin Shoy
was is going to be really good. She had some
really good highlights last year. Just so fast and a
good ball user. And you've got Zalie Goldsworthy, i'd say,
is the X factor of the competition that everyone loves watching.
So between doubt, Sir Joy and Goldsworthy. I think they're
(23:38):
going to be a fun midfield and then heading forward
for the defense and then just some of the kicking
skills I'm going to worry. I'm going to worry about
So I've got them last on the ladder. Unfortunately for
Giants fans out there.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
There's a lot of pressure on cam Bernisconi this year,
isn't there. Yeah, he can't have another bad year or if.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
He's I think they've got a very young.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
The pass mark for them.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Two to three wins and not getting flogged.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
Yeah, maybe three wins because you can't have one winning, not.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Be uncompetitive most weeks, which was the concern last year,
like they'd show a quarter of good football and then
get blown away. Maybe it's building it to a half
or three quarters of good football.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
That's some weird things happened at their home ground.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
If you're on the snake on the ground, that out
of game stuffed up their warm up and then there
was two like so many weather things happened and they
had to come off. So hopefully that those things don't
raple their season again. Because they were saying that stuffed
them up with a warm up.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
I think their home games are at Monica at Henson
this year, so no blackcoat trips.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Yeah, okay, there we go, there we go.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yeah, but I've got them in the bottom four, bottom fours.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Yeah, bottom four as well, unfortunately for the Giants. Let's
move on to Hawthorne, who were a real surprise packet
last year. Yes, took advantage of the good drawer, went
ten and one to finish second on the ladder before
bombing out in straight sets.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Just take it away.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Well, as you just mentioned, they only dropped one game
last season. They would have been devastated to lose that
semi final. But I reckon they'll be picking up where
they left off in some hot form. I reckon they're
going to be the ones that are coming from for
the Ruse in the top two. Really, I did have
a massive practice out, practice match showing over the Tigers.
(25:13):
I mean, you know, the Tigers aren't going their best,
but four dominance looking strong. They're Captain Emily Bates just
like leading leading the charge for the Hawks. They she
notched up you know, a whole rack of disposals that
had seven inside fifty entries, which is quite nice from
the skipper. I mean, Eliza West looking Hot Forms last
(25:34):
season's best and fairest for the Hawks. They've done some
nice recruiting, added some long distance kicking through Najua Allen
from the coast. I really hope I'm pronouncing that correctly.
But they did, as we mentioned before, they let Matt
Breed go to the Pies. But now she's copted an injury.
So yes, been playing anyway. Yeah, they've had dangerous It
(25:58):
is dangerous, and I think people will be, you know,
seeing them up up the top. Maybe not at the.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Top, but you know, Tom been finishing top two again
because obviously they're gonna have the much harder draw. Obviously
Dan Webster's second season of coaching them as well, coming
from Brisbane, Like this is a good midfield and a
very good forward one. So you're like, you're key.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
I mean, I'm on it Hot Fall as well. Yeah,
absolutely they're drafted. Though she copped around a one match suspension,
Grace Barber stats.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
Guy was ready to write all about her.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
She's got a really good goal. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
I think I saw the highlight that would have been
Goali year. I reckon and then and then five minutes
later I see another post that she's out around.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
I was like, Iver, want to watch Barba.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
She looked absolutely awesome in that game and just a
bit of an X factor that is a perfect like
small forward on the wing as well.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
And then yeah she's around one. But after round one,
speaking of.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
X fact, you haven't even talked about Alien Gilroy. Yeah,
she can kick fifty five. Probably my favorite player the
non Sydney Division.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Sydney reference tick for this matchup.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
And obviously Jazz Flaming went from strength to strength last year.
You've got greater Bodie up forward as well.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Yeah, it's a good team.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Their drawer is what knocks me. They're gonna play everyone
from the top six last year obviously, aside from themselves,
so it's going to be a lot tougher this year.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
So I've got them sliding a bit into that bottom
half of the eight.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
Well.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
I spoke to Jazz Ghanner and she said, she's, you know,
she's awaiting the kind of contest from the likes of
the Hawks and the Cats and the D's. They're kind
of expecting big things, you know, some big contests with
these teams. So you know, we'll wait and see.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
Have you got them finishing starts going?
Speaker 5 (27:40):
I was going to have them in seventh.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
I think around that seven, I still think they'll make
the finals, but with that tougher fixture, they're not going
to win as many games as last year. They did
a few teams like the Tigers and things like that
in pre season, so I'm still got big hopes on them,
but I think they'll drop off in terms of the fixture.
Fixture is such a big thing in a w If
they just played every team once like we all wanted,
then it'd be a more eviful getting.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
Up to fourteen or fifteen games went five to five
and five.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
Yeah, I don't know. It frustrates me, but I think
they finished them.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Okay, so I've gone really bold here. I mean, I'm
sticking to it, butks just.
Speaker 5 (28:11):
Message the whole season.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Don't make me look silly exactly.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Come, hang, we're a good time under the d starts
guy with the Melbourne Demons. They went six and five
last year to just miss the finals.
Speaker 1 (28:21):
It's the first time they hadn't made the top four ever.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
But in preseason they look pretty good.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
Yeah, they look great.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
I think this is the season where they bounced back
to at least that top six.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
This season. I think they're going to be a good team.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
I think they've finished the season strongly last season, winning
five of their last six, and that's the demons that
they should beat.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
They should be playing like. They had some weird losses
in the middle.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
We were at the Essendon Verse Melbourne game where Es
weirdly smashed them out of the park, and then the
week after that, I think that's when they started going
on that five out of six wins, so it was
a bit of an hour Final Friday, Grand.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Friday, that's right.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
I think they've just got a lot of good pieces,
a lot of good young players like Eliza McNamara. She
built her game last season. I thought she was really good,
good disposals and tackles, which in afi W is just
a massive tick.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
No major player trades.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
But they got picked too, which was Molly o Hair,
which is very exciting, very athletic tall, very similar to
a Varna Harris sort of that they'd called that unicorn.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
He looks very good.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Yeah, she looks really good, just an exciting toll.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
I think they needed another tool to add to that
lineup as well, because they've got a lot of good,
really good smalls.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
But I just don't see the D's.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
They're just a team in AFIW the breeze success, I
think they're going to bounce back up there. You've got
Kate Hall amazing on field later she had twenty three
and three goals.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
I think someone.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
Doesn't have a broken face this year, which should help.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
Yeah, we're not going to have the mask. It was awesome,
it was pretty cool. And you've got yeah McNamara, who
hasn't mentioned Alyssa Bannon on the rise as well. I
think she can kick a few more goals. And then
they delisted some older players and stuff. I think the
youth coming through it's going to be really good and
they'll be good this season.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
If Bannon can take the next step and really start
attacking the football in the air and start taking some
of those contested clunks. Yeah, like she's going to be
one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (29:57):
I think it was fourteen goals she had last year.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
If you can get that up to eighteen to twenty,
then I'm seeing the D's fifth around that top top
four to five sort of mark.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Because the young guns are so good.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
Right, so you've got to making finals.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Yeah, he's gone in strong one.
Speaker 5 (30:13):
I'm big on the d's.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
I think that was they showed last year that I
don't know what was gone in the middle part of
the season. Their tactics were off that a few injuries.
Tyl Harris was out in that middle part as well.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
She's also injured again.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
She's injured again. But I think they've got enough depth
there to still make the finals.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
I've got them in that bottom half of the eight
slash missing finals, glutton of teams I have.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
Okay, Yeah, I've.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
Got them in the bottom half of the eighth as well.
Speaker 5 (30:33):
Okay, you've got to make the finals.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
So yeah, making finals. Yeah, I mean you just sold
me on that.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
I'm just going to step out for the next three
minutes while Jess and the stats guy talk about North
Melbourne who went ten zero and one last year. First
on the ladder, first ever team to go perfect, unbeaten.
Speaker 5 (30:49):
Almost perfect, there was a draw. You were perfect.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
You didn't lose it didn't They were called the invincibles.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
I'm trying to get that rolling. No one else ran
with it for me.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
First undefaired AFLW season, first suspension club to win the premiership.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Take it away, Where.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
To start going start. I think we start with Jazz Khana.
She's taking the reins year.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
So she shake hands with all the umpires this morning.
High I'm Jazz. Nice to meet you and the best player.
I will see you at the coin toss. It's lovely
to meet you.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Yeah, I mean she's cool, calm and collected. She's not
bothered by anything. We definitely are, at least not too
far changed from their undefeated premiership side of twenty twenty four. However,
incomes a very handy jewel all Australian, Eilish Sharon from
the Tiger.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
That's crazy next draft picks when you can pick up
in all Australian for pick eight, I know, well that's it.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
And Ghana did tell me that she is excited just
to have a you know, playing alongside here and rather
than playing against her. She's like, I'm pumped to have
her on board and guys test a boid avoid Yes,
I mean the Ruse will take a boid. I think
any team would take a boy.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
She's mature age twenty seven year old defenders the first
time in six seasons that she's been on an AFLs
so twenty nineteen with the Dogs I think she's refound
her love for the game. Awesome, So the Routes will
take her.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
Yeah, absolutely stick They're.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
So good, just another defender, another nice tool. So you know,
player retention I think is just working in their favor
so well.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
They seem a very tight group, very tight.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
I mean I found out all the inside got from
Jazz this morning. She you know, told us about the
social committee. They do fun things. They went and got
tattoos together after the Grand Fight this.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
Season, piss Up felt like it went for six months.
Speaker 4 (32:45):
Yeah, there was a lot long stinning bali, which is
what you want to see.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
And didn't the trophy get damaged in the most innocuous
why it survived all of the nights out and like
someone just dropped it probably Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
I mean that sounds about right.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
I think if your trophy isn't getting damaged, then what
are you doing after you go?
Speaker 5 (33:01):
For right? I mean yeah, yeah, I want only one
hand on it though. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I mean they had a fashion show just a couple
of weeks ago. I don't know if anyone caught that on.
So I was such oppressed. But you know, Garda coming
into the skiper role hasn't even faulted her at all
three goals, twenty four touches, six clearances in a practice
match fourteen on the weekend. So huge. Emma Conney probably
(33:29):
going into more of that reduced role, but still such
a well swung song.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Very well could be Yeah, especially if she stood down
as captain Hammi last year.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
Yeah, like what a transition for her.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Just gets to enjoy it, right, she can just vibe
it on half back and rack up with the persons
again it's yeah, and the Connie is going to be
that person's oh who took that on a demo?
Speaker 1 (33:52):
Again? Yeah, I'm contested, Mark, How is she always there? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Any time you go to like country forty and it's
the genius who just finds the spa finds the space
every time it has forty.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Yeah, that's the end of this.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Ye.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
And she's also the one that whenever they're like just
a little bit of trouble, like I mean really but
whenever that does come across, like it's ever, that pops
up definitely settles it. I don't think it'll be another
undefeated season.
Speaker 5 (34:18):
I want to put that out there.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
I think someone's gonna come and you know, just put
the rules in their place a little bit, okay, and
it might not even be like a Hawks or a DZ.
It could be a left of field, you know, random
pop up. Last year that's round one, So we don't
start with for the ruse, but maybe a little bit
(34:41):
of extra motivation to get them get them going again.
Speaker 5 (34:44):
Yeah, I'm just.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Trying to figure out in the fixture, who would it be.
Maybe Brisbane, Maybe maybe Brisbane or even all Port Round two.
That's gonna be fun, that would be good.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Yeah, So I.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
Mean, what have you got?
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Do you have them undefeated?
Speaker 5 (34:56):
I agree with you.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
I think a few of the top six teams have
improved because it used to be like top three or four.
You going they're the best teams, But I feel like
there's six to seven really good teams this year. So yeah,
I think they'll lose one game as well, but one game.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
Still win the flag, which will get until later unbeaten. Unbeaten.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
I said it this time last year, so standing actually
you just said at the start of the unbeaten, I
think they'll go unbeaten again. Moving on to Port Adelaide,
who won seven and four last year, finished sixth, pulled
off one of the most amazing final.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Wins you will ever see.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
Against tawth On, what was it the highest three quarter
time different huge AFL W history. I nearly left a
three quarter time I was there that I was like,
this is over, and I stayed. Thank god, thank god
I stayed because it was one of the most amazing
things you'll see. Obviously got sort of brushed aside in
that prelimb, but they everyone, I think, knew that it
(35:49):
was going to happen. Like they had the high of
that win. It's like, Okay, you've made it this far.
You're not winning the prelim. They tried their best but
just got brushed aside. I think el Ahead's coming in
off half back is going to help them move the
ball quicker out of defense in transition, and that's where
they caught Hawthorne out in that semi finals movement through
transition because they have a lot of good ball users,
like obviously sane goodies in there as well. She'll be
(36:11):
better again. It's her second season. It's only Chelsea's second
season as well, like this is insane. They are the
third lowest team as far as age is concerned in
the league. Sixty six percent of their list is twenty
two years old or younger.
Speaker 5 (36:24):
I don't mind that though, because that's what I mean.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Yeah, they're only getting better. There's all those players that
are twenty two or younger. I've probably played their whole
life copaed to other players that have come in for
different sports or only started when they're sixteen.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
So I love that, like they're four of one. Obviously,
Jemma Houghton and Tiakap there we do love Tea. She's
only twenty one as well. That's the one that Chuck
was like, surely she's older.
Speaker 1 (36:44):
She's not.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
I just wish they had one more forward. That's sort
of my only real knock on them. Their fixture is
a lot tougher this year as well, obviously, given that
they jumped up into the into a prelimb and they
weren't good over the weekend against Collingwood, but it looked
like they were second of the footy that I sort
of weren't. They seem like a team that if they
switch on, they'll be good to go. But I was
(37:05):
just having a bit of fun, like it didn't look
like the most serious of hitouts. I can't wait to
see Lauren Young when she gets back from her acl
she'll make her debut this year. She was fifteen years
old when she won the sandful w Best and Fairest.
That is crazy, It's unreal.
Speaker 5 (37:19):
Yeah, not bad.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
She'll sneak in up for what I reckon to start
off with. So when she comes in, she's going to
be good. But this is a team obviously we haven't
mentioned that be Derek either. Like, they are very good
football team. It's going to be a very exciting season
of them. I think they finish around the same spot again,
in that bottom half of the eighth.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
I'll give you give me something something here, mother than
the fifth to tenth or fifth and ninth of it.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Sticking in it.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
I've also got them in fifth to eighth, but definitely
making finals.
Speaker 5 (37:43):
I think.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Yeah, you've actually convinced me. I was on the fence,
but I think they'll make the finals as well. Okay,
just sneaking for me.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
I don't mind it. Stats go. Let's get on to Richmond,
who went six to four and one last year, seventh
on the ladder twenty six points. They were the team
that got They were the one team that got smashed
in the finals. They were well beaten by poor Adelaide.
There's a lot going on.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
Here, a lot going on, a lot of inns, a
lot of outs of punt road. We mentioned just before
I leash Dual all Australian. It's a big loss of
talent and experience level as well. Coming up to the Ruse,
incomes e Isy Bacon. She's already making that name.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
So many good names there.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
Is, isn't there. She's already making a big impact in
the midfield, Lulu Beatty and in defense as well. Pick
eleven in the draft, Sarah Grieves, a mid half forward.
Speaker 4 (38:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
So Katie Brennan was managed, had to manage load in
the practice match lost to the Hawks, but she booted
a nice goal before coming off, so it'll be interesting
to see how they manage her workload throughout the season.
Mayte Kantian she's always just been a star of that team,
so she led the way in the practice match. But
how long can the Tigers be relying on Contie's star power?
(38:53):
As the question I put to you guys.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
Yeah, especially if Sheeran's out. I think you've got a
few good midfielders in there. Grace Egan was which we
didn't play over the weekend. She didn't play over the
week and she's been really good. Alan McKenzie is really good.
So they have enough players there, but sheeron out is
that sort of brute strength. The other ones are a
little bit more on the outside, so it'll be interesting
to see if they can handle that. And still, because
they were a really good clearance team last year, you
(39:16):
take out Sharon, I have to wait and see.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
I think yeah, And you know, they've got quite a
bit of youth coming through the team now, so Sarah
Hoskin and Mante Contie, they're both championed that youth and
coming through the system. They're confident that this young side
can get them through to the finals. And of course
they made the finals last season. Well, you know, I've
got them kind of falling out of the eighth or
(39:39):
you know, maybe just scraping through. So I'm just not
really sure where they sit.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
I have them just missing.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
Yeah, I'm going to get into it later because I
might change my slider. But you've sort of convinced me
there's a lot of changes in this team where I
think in AFIW with the short season, the first three
or four games, they're going to have to adjust. So
I'm going to say they're going to be tenth to twelfth.
I thought I'm a bit worried about in this season.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Yeah, yeah, I'm similar.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Moving on to Sint Kilda coach buying Nikki Dao. They
went four and seven last year. Eleventh on the ladder
was sixteen points. They were a very confusing team to
watch last year.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
Yeah, probably second to Geelong in the times of terms
of confusing teams because they've got a lot of stars,
a lot of players that went really well, but then
they lost some weird games, very up and down season,
tough fixture and big losses at home, which is the worrier.
In twenty twenty five, we really just want to see
them make Morabin just a fortress.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
Because bring back the Fairest Wheel.
Speaker 5 (40:27):
It's yeah, bring that the Fairest Wheel.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
It's good fun down there, but it's the fans weren't
getting wins down there, so that's not what you want
to see. Jesse Wardoor continues to build. I love watching her.
She was the key for them in attack. She also
had fourteen goals last season. Again, it's one of those players.
If you want to compete with the best teams, your
best forward has to kick around that eight in to
twenty goals, I would say, and that's what we saw
with the likes of North and Brisbane and a few
(40:50):
other teams, Geelong even Maloney kicking twenty one goals. So
if you can eight that game to the next level,
then I think their offense will be fine. You got
Tianna Smith, she was awesome. She had a few goal
of the year high I believe her speed. And then Lamb,
but I think Lamba got their best and Ferrist as
well from the midfield. So they've got some stars there.
But I'm just worried about their depth is the only thing.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Yeah, I don't forget. Georgia Petrichios will be back this
year too. Didn't play a game last season.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
That's so she.
Speaker 4 (41:13):
Came in for the pracking match and dominated and Saints
fans like, oh thank god, because she.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
Obviously went down.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
Was it the first game last year the preseason? There
you go, so she said the tone in the practice
match she was a foot Yeah, I think it was too,
But she's a star. There's actually got a fair bit
of star power there. They didn't really bring many many
people into the side. They've got Grace Kelly going out
of the side to Adelaide as well. I thought was
a really good player was retiring as well, Who's been
a stare for Hollingwood back in the day and just
(41:40):
been a really really good leader for them as well.
So didn't really bring in anyone that of big names.
So I'm a little bit worried about That's why I've
got them. I'm gonna be missing the finals that nine
to eleven sort of spot.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Yeah, I have been missing the finals too, and shot
Baskaran in that Ford line as well, buzzing around as well.
Speaker 5 (41:55):
She just a decent pick up, to be fair.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
I didn't always get a game for the Hawks, so
it was in and out, in and out, so hopefully.
Speaker 5 (42:00):
She can get some more.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
She's too good not to be on a list. No,
I agree with that. I agree with that.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
Yeah, I've got them intenth so right in between all
of your predictions.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
There we go, there we go.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
All right, let's go right, don't let him go to.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
The Sydney Swans, who last year went three and eight
finished fifteenth on the latter twelve points after making the
semi final the year before.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
Getting it out of the way. Right now, the Swans
are playing finals this year.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
That's my prediction. Are they they all make the finals
this season. If that practice match against Brisbane was anything
to go off, they probably should have won that game.
They got beaten by thirteen points. But Ali Morphitt without
any strapping on, Chloe Malloy back out on the field,
Laura Gardner back out on the field as well, so
they were without Chloe for all of the seasons.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
She played one game, Ali Morphitt battled away.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
To three or four games and Laura Gardner I think
played six games as well, So there's three legitimate all
Australians there back in the team this year. Laura Gardner
had thirty five touches like just had the leather poisoning
over the weekend. My concern about the Swans is their
ford line. It was my worry about them all of
last year. Obviously, beck Privateelli and Chloe Malloy there as well,
(43:04):
will be up there as well. And merely Martin is
an academy pickup from Woollongong got pick six you I
think she was the last pick of the draft, but
showed signs in that practice match against Brisbane and was
also pretty good against GW West From all reports. If
Montana Ham plays midfield all season. I think she'll be
in all Australian. She's she's strengthened up in the off
season and was shrugging off Ali Anderson like there was
(43:27):
just nothing about her. On the weekend was like, oh,
like you've taken that next step we heard I think
it was her mother told us that she was injured
all of last year and she's been managing those injuries.
So I think that's going to be good there. Ella
Heads has left the team, which I thought was going
to be a loss. But the best named player in
the afl W will be running off half back Zippy Fish.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
Zippy Fish?
Speaker 5 (43:47):
How good is that name?
Speaker 1 (43:50):
Zip?
Speaker 5 (43:51):
And she's got pace like and.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
She's got she's got hops as well, like she took
a towering contested mark over the weekend. So you've got
Darcima that's come in, ash Van Lun from Essendon, Lulu
Pula came across from North North defensive winger which will
help there obviously, Grierson from GWS. Like there's nine changes
to this list from last year. They've cut a lot
of players and I did this one season preview a
(44:16):
couple of nights ago. It's like you see, none of
those players that were delisted were picked up anywhere else,
so that.
Speaker 5 (44:22):
Probably a good sign that they've done the right thing there.
Speaker 1 (44:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
Yeah, those changes by finishing in the bottom six as well.
Like we talk about the draw, it's given them the
easier draw. So that's why I think they can bounce
back up into finals when you're adding a full fitness season,
ideally from like Chloe morph Chloe molloy, Ali morph at
Laura Gardner and Montana HAMMERT.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
I'm excited.
Speaker 5 (44:40):
You are very excited. You've both got the finals. Is
that right?
Speaker 3 (44:43):
I've got them in finals now lower eight, I've got
them like sixth, yes, exactly. So excited to see Chloe
back in action. I think the league is excited to
see her.
Speaker 2 (44:52):
She did like two things in that practice much I
only played a half. It's she's back. Ye, she's back.
Speaker 5 (44:57):
I think they're going to be ninth. Well just missed.
I'm not even doing that to piss you off.
Speaker 4 (45:02):
A lot of people in the comments probably think, but
I just think there's a few other teams that have
taken that next up.
Speaker 5 (45:07):
I think next year you could even go up to
the top like five.
Speaker 4 (45:09):
I think it's just another year that they need, especially
the four that I don't know if they can kick enough.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
So that the Swans have the youngest played games team
in the competition and the second youngest list in the competition.
Speaker 5 (45:21):
Yep, and you might not have the easiest fixture, so
we'll see.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Yeah, it's there's games, the games against Geelong and the
d's will be telling them you're penciling in for a
loss against Adelaide and North Yep, it's those other two
games which would be telling if they make finals. Okay,
West Coast another one for me here when four and
seven last year, first season of Daisy thirteenth from the
latter was sixteen points.
Speaker 1 (45:42):
They are the youngest team this season in the competition.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
They really improved last year, but you think about it,
they went four and two to start the season and
then really tailed off.
Speaker 5 (45:51):
Years effect was awesome early. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
Yeah, when they knocked off Richmond around one, like ah,
oh okay, it's pretty cool. Yeah. Obviously Ella Roberts could
be the best player in the competition.
Speaker 5 (46:01):
Like, yeah, you're big on that.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
I'm a massive fan of her and Charlotte Thomas as well,
both of them all Australians. Last season Can they run
out the season? Though we saw them they tied off
last year. I just said they are the youngest list
once again this year. Can they run out the season?
Speaker 5 (46:15):
What do you think?
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Yes, I mean I've got I mean my latter prediction
has got the missing Finals, So I don't know it's
gonna it's gonna be a tough one. It's one of
those teams where it's like it's kind of hard to
predict where the chips will fall. But yeah, Hosking's not
playing the season for them, so that's that's quite a
knock to their experience when you said they're there the youngest,
(46:37):
So yeah, I mean I've got the missing Finals.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
Yeah, I think I think again they might start well.
I think a lot of the younger teams. It happens
in afi happenings in lots of sports. You as start well,
and then teams because they don't know as much about
the younger players and then don't know as much about
the matchups, and then later in the season. I think
it's gonna be very similar to the last I reckon
they could get three or four wins again and almost
have a very similar season, similar to Sydney.
Speaker 5 (46:58):
I think another year or so and then they'll be right.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Yeah, I've got them missing. I've got them finishing in
the same sort of position as last year, but they
won't get blown out like they did late in the
season last year.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
I think at home as well. They were pretty solid
at home and a few games their pressure was really good.
If they can bring that away then they say in
some games they have a few close losses as well.
But yeah, i've got a missing finals. I think they're
going to be in the bottom bottom four.
Speaker 5 (47:19):
Oh yeah probably wow. Yeah, unfortunately for them going to
come after your.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
Just missing the finals too.
Speaker 3 (47:26):
Yes, I've got them sitting. Maybe twelfth might jump as well.
Speaker 5 (47:29):
I love how Alex he's got twelfth to last on
the run.
Speaker 1 (47:33):
Yeah, that's why.
Speaker 2 (47:34):
Then I just went, you know what, they'll finish in
the same position. I've changed a few on the run
here laughing about it. Let's get to the Western Bulldog
stats guy club that you know a little bit about
thanks to Mark mccallney.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
Yeah, dad, Yes, a few people involved with the Dogs.
They struggled.
Speaker 5 (47:47):
They copped a lot of criticism last season. We talked
about it.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
There was a bit of criticism from us, a bit
of criticism in the media for not attacking. They were
just so they'll park in the bus in a few games.
Then once they started playing attacking, they're like, oh, we
can win curseonly turn this the best players in the competition.
Speaker 5 (48:01):
Other Greeks kicking goals.
Speaker 4 (48:02):
Everything was just clicking once they got on a roll,
and they ended up after Ali Blackburn got into the
four and four, which she's their goat. They absolutely got
Ali Blackburn, one of their best players. You take her
out and you go surely the dogs can't get wins.
Actually got four wins without it, which was very, very surprising. Yeah,
and I think it wasn't even because she was out.
I think she's definitely going to improve their team when
she's playing. But they're just because they started playing attacking footy.
(48:25):
And I think when you're down the lower ends of
the ladder they are. They still finished twelfth in the end,
which was great, but they were down in the sevenenteenth
and eighteenth for the first half of the season.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Then they get some that little tougher draw after finishing
down the bottom of the eye.
Speaker 4 (48:36):
That's what I'm worried about. Yeah, I think a few
people are worried about them for that. They get Stevenson
from the Hawks, adds a bit of a height and goalkicking,
which is what they needed. Yeah, they were getting goals
from the half fowards and the wings. You needed just
another goalkicker down there. But it was a quiet trade period,
so I'm a little bit worried about them this year.
They'll have a much tougher fixture, I think, obviously finishing twelfth,
but you've got Ali Greg as I mentioned before, Western Turner,
(48:57):
they'll be better at home. Quiet trade period though, so
I think they'll be a bit lower on the ladder.
I'm thinking I'm going to go sixteenth. Yeah, I think
their team is exciting. It's just they're going to have
a tougher fixture and yeah, not much trades, so I
think other teams have improved better more than them.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
I can't wait to see another season of Ella grig though,
big fan of her machine.
Speaker 5 (49:16):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (49:17):
I've got them around that as well, like fourteenth fifteenth,
just as a bit higher.
Speaker 3 (49:21):
I've got a bit of spark, a lot of mind
that though. I mean, I've got they might just scrape
in for them sitting between eight and ten, so maybe finals,
but you know, just likely just missing. But I see
a bit of improvement from them.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
Okay, mind it.
Speaker 5 (49:38):
Yeah, they'll be exciting. Yeah, they'll have some fun games.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
All right, let's get into the final segments.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
As we have ripped through all eighteen teams, we do that,
let's get.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
Some season predictions here.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
We can rip through these ones, and you know what,
we'll leave the Premier to last because we probably know
where we're going to go there. Let's start off with
who is this season's biggest Right, are up the ladder,
I've already said it.
Speaker 1 (50:01):
It's the Swans. They're going from fifteenth to the finals.
Ooh you're going? Yes?
Speaker 3 (50:05):
Ones, Yes, I mean I'm confident in the Dogs. Yeah,
that's a big I've got some rising Yeah, I like that.
Speaker 5 (50:12):
I like that. I'm going to go the Cats. I
just think they've got a lot of depth.
Speaker 4 (50:14):
Only team, as I mentioned to stay with North, they
had a lot of big wins, a few sixty plus
point wins. I reckon they would be the surprise back
at top four for me from tenth.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
Oh bang, biggest slider as in, just who's going to
sort of maybe regress going into this year Port Adelaide.
I think if the drawer doesn't go their way, they
can miss the finals.
Speaker 5 (50:32):
Yeah, they've got a young team, let's see that.
Speaker 3 (50:33):
Ye, yeah, I've got I've got the Tigers sliding. They
made the finals and I don't have them up there
this year.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
I changed mine halfway through this, but Jess convinced me
on the Tigers. I just I'm worried about a lot
of changes. I'm worried about Shieran, who's one of their
most experienced players, going out. So I think they might
might just miss the finals, even though they seem really confident.
Speaker 5 (50:52):
But yeah, be worried about them.
Speaker 1 (50:53):
Who's going to win the Rising Start.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
I've got two options that I can't decide, So, I mean,
obviously the Pie's number one. Pick Ash CenTra or Sophie McKay.
Speaker 5 (51:06):
That's a good roguees. She kicked a couple of goals.
Speaker 3 (51:08):
Yeah, yeah, she looked good.
Speaker 4 (51:10):
Yeah, I don't mind that. I'm going to go to
Ash Center as well. I just think everyone rates her
so highly. She looked so skilled, especially in the Collingwood team.
It's probably going to be down on the ladder again.
She's going to stand out. You've got her next to
Rubys Schlisher, which is a great mentor as well. She's
going to absolutely stuff.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
I've gone Zippy Fish or Havana has.
Speaker 4 (51:28):
It's not best name competition, it's right, she'll be good to.
Speaker 1 (51:31):
I think both of them are going to be very good.
Which just I went away from the obvious with ash
CenTra because they did hold her back from the practice
match last weekend.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
So maybe we'll see. Maybe there might be a little niggle.
We don't know about leading a goal kicker. This was
wholly contested last year Taylor Smith, because Brisbane kick a
lot of goals.
Speaker 5 (51:47):
She led last year leading goal kicker.
Speaker 3 (51:49):
You got Jess, I've got Alice o'laughlan, don't I think
she was the third, came in third last year, kicked
about eighteen.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
Feels like it could be the head of vibes there too, right,
she does a lot of the interviews.
Speaker 5 (52:01):
Game leads to the party, I think as well.
Speaker 3 (52:04):
Yeah, so you know that midfield, get there forwards some
nice inside fifty entries. She might be right up there.
Speaker 4 (52:12):
She plays like a tall as well, even though she's
not the key for Yeah, really good set shot.
Speaker 5 (52:17):
I'm going to go Ashley Maloney.
Speaker 4 (52:18):
I've been talking up the Cats this whole thing and
I think the main reason they'll finished top four is
Maloney finished second. I think it was only in the
last round last year that tamer Smith overtook her for
the goals for the season. They're on the rise and
I think the major reason that the Cat's going to
be good is Maloney.
Speaker 1 (52:31):
Let's get to the best and fairest medal.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
It all needs to be called the Daisy Pierce Award
or the Phillips or the Pierce Phillips or the Phillips Pierce,
whichever way you want to call it.
Speaker 1 (52:41):
I'm starting my campaign. Yeah, I like it too.
Speaker 4 (52:44):
Yeah, I'm going to go Ebonie Maronov. I've just I
know it's obvious, but no one is. She had the
best season that we've ever seen last season. I think
we'll have another player from North Melbourne that was a
bit hard done by, but a lot of players at
North Melbourne can take votes, whereas I don't think as
many Adelaide players are taking those votes. And she just
stands out so much, barges through the packs, gets the
tackles as well, does a bit on both ends.
Speaker 3 (53:05):
Emie Marinth I mean, I'm going surely it's Jazz's year,
It's not a bad yeah, but you are right North
through her players that can steal votes. But I'm still
backing hery and I hope she gets her flowers.
Speaker 4 (53:17):
Yeah, sometimes she has. She has thirty and three goals
and come on, come on.
Speaker 2 (53:23):
Going with the no one will probably take votes off
of her theory and when they win, she will be
best on ground.
Speaker 1 (53:28):
Ella Roberts. Yeah, out of my theory.
Speaker 2 (53:30):
It's it's the Chris Judd Garry Albert theory of she
is so good that she will get votes in losses.
Speaker 4 (53:35):
I think that you'll need West Coast to finish tenth
or above which they can yeap for her to yeah,
get the best and first, because obviously.
Speaker 2 (53:43):
You rogue shout ye I was going to. I think
she's that good as well. If she was playing in Victoria,
the media would be all over her.
Speaker 1 (53:52):
True and the premiership winner in three two one, let's
go to back to back.
Speaker 4 (54:00):
I only listen one game. We're saying in the last
two years unbeaten, they're going unbeaten, unbeaten. Yeah, I'm going unbeaten.
But obviously North Melbourne.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
North Melbourne fans over here, we are we just you know,
we know where the lid is.
Speaker 4 (54:12):
Yeah, we're already going to celebrate.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
But that is your season preview for AFLW Season ten.
All done and dust at August fourteenth, first game Carlton
and Collingwood. Yes, we will be back every Monday at
the end of each round to review it. So that'll
be our show throughout the is a review show, but

Speaker 1 (54:52):
Robinson, thank you.
Speaker 3 (54:53):
And guys, let us know who you want to hear from. Yes,
we get some questions to some players, Yes.
Speaker 2 (54:59):
Yes, definitely get down in the comments players that you
want to hear from, even questions that you want to ask,
like I'm going to ask are you left, are you
left sock right? SoC or are you sock, sock shoe
shoe Like, I need to know these things. What weird
superstitions players have?
Speaker 3 (55:10):
The most important question?
Speaker 5 (55:11):
Nicknames is my favorite?
Speaker 2 (55:12):
What was it the cereal that Tanya Kennedy ate last
year where she mixes four of them together.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Before her pregame was four different serials or something. Those
things are just yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:23):
But before we waflop too much, we are done and
dust this today. I make sure you do follow us
on social media. It is a f L a W
today across all the social platforms. Hopefully they're popping up
here right now. We'll catch you
Speaker 1 (55:33):
For the around one review in a couple of weeks
time of AFL
