Speaker 1 (00:01):
Round two is done and Dustin, we only have two
people on the couch. Welcome to AFLW Today's Around two
wrap up. I'm your host, Alex Donnelly. Usually I would
be joined by Lee mccallian, but for some reason I've
allowed him to go on holiday. He's in Japan living
the life right now. He did send through a text
how happy he was about North Melbourne winning, but also
to talk me through yet another North Melbourne win. Is

(00:23):
Jess Robinson from Code Sports. Jess, how are we?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
We're so good?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Sixteen wins on the trot for North so you know
it's a great time.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
But what around?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, what a great round? But firstly, oh I'm North Melbourne.
I'm gonna have my biggest win ever and kick my
biggest score of all time and not lose for two years.
Can you guys just grow up?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
You know what, We've had a lot of downtimes through
the men's side, so just let us happen.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Oh no, I'm Pokey, absolutely fun, just having a good time.
It's amazing that. We'll talk about North Melbourne later, but
so this weekend in the round, North Melbourne have kicked
their highest score over which seems insane that they haven't
hit the ton yet biggest win ever. But you've also
got Sydney kicking their biggest score, having their biggest twin,
Sint Kilda's biggest loss, and Brisbane's biggest score. It was
a great weekend of football.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
A big, big round, a few belterings, a few you know,
really close battles, but not a whole lot of upsets.
Maybe balance restored to a couple of teams.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
I'll claim one of them as an upset as well,
and two teams heard my criticism and kind of decided
to take it personally. So that was that was a
nice thing to get me wrong. But next week social
girl Spence, she's back from holiday as well. She'll be
on the couch as well to talk us through Carlton.
She's very very excited Bringbacksped. I thought, first day back
from holiday literally today, I couldn't make her just come
on to the that would have been right. He's into it, Spence.

(01:37):
But we'll start off with Saturday at Amy not at
Amy Park, at Victoria Park. Amy Park's in the what
is down here in Melbourne? It's the Melbourne storm Ground,
but Collingwood Fort nine thirty three defeated GWS four one
twenty five in a game that was close that probably
shouldn't have been as.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Close, right, GWS almost did well for taking it to
the Pies.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Well, they almost snatched it there. They took advantage of
the opportunities that they had whenever the ball went inside
sort of Ford fifty. But Evan's kicking three goals, kicks
three straight. They have five shots on goalf for four goals.
But calling it my god, that was frustrating the hard
as they did make it hard for themselves. They were
in the control of this game the whole way through
despite being behind, and that was the story of their

(02:20):
day was kicking behind and it was actually some very
costly GWS mistakes ten meters out from goal that has
eventually cost the Giants the game. Here, like you have
a Kavanah kicking across goal where the tallest person on
the field is standing with Fredericks, just like oh football
bang takes a mark at the top of the square.
Like those things are coach killers for the Giants and

(02:41):
a team that's going to struggle for wins. I'm looked
leaning into the Giants part. First, they're going to look
back on those two mistakes. Also there was a holding
the ball about ten meters out as well. They're going
to look back on those and go, we probably should
have probably should have won that and probably should have
tied it up a bit more.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
And has that also come down to just some leadership
on the ground, like running through the players that's probably
the wrong decision.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
How was that looking on.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
The ground from the Giants or is it just a
bit of a I don't really know what they're doing yet.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Getting it out of the midfield was all right. Obviously
got Bason and Caitlin, sirhoy, they're like doing their jobs
as well, but it's just obviously no Parker getting injured
last week as well really hurt them. And just I
don't have much confidence in their team in general, Like
there's a couple of nice players, but aside from that,
there's not a lot going on. And we've said Colin
would are probably going to struggle this year. This was

(03:30):
a game I thought Colin would win comfortably because I
think they've got enough pieces to win games like these,
like beneath she Sarah first game back from having surgery
as well, like what thirty days ago or something absolutely
insane ruby. Slisher was brilliant ash CenTra. Not a lot
of the footy again. We saw some moments once again though,
like absolutely you can see it there. Once she gets

(03:50):
her I suppose her full tank up and going, I
would throw on the midfield and it'll be like, oh, yeah,
she's really good.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
There's going to be one game this season where she
absolutely just stars and it's like a legacy breakout game
and everyone will be talking about it. But fans are
seeing a glimmer. It's little flimmers from her.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
They threw in the midfield in the last quarter, she
gets a cent a clear and straight away she makes
the smother with thirty seconds to go. There's all those
little moments and you're just like, okay, I can see it,
like exciting, yeah, And what I like she's got. She's
got a bit of a bit of arrogance about, like
she knows she's good as well and at eighteen years
old to sort of rate yourself that highly. Like she

(04:28):
she's demanding more of her teammates already, which is really
good to see. But good for Collingwood. It's their first
one to Victoria Park since twenty twenty three. Obviously last
year was a very long year for them.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah. Absolutely, they'll be happy to get the first win.
Just back on as she's coming off a big win,
a big week just in the media as well, just
having all that attention, the spotlight on hers with that
really cool through her legs bouncing.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
I cannot do alterea hamstring attempting.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, so I think she did really well to kind
of like back up that spotlight, all the attention and
still bring it.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Also, Ash CenTra loves football. She was at Frankston on
Saturday night and I saw at Arden Street yesterday, so
I love to see that support of the dud. But
I do need to bring up then when Collingwood did
hit the front it was it was a great team
play because you have Atkinson make the tackle in the
defensive half. It's probably won them in the game because
then slash against the ball CenTra Rowan Howe. It's all
involved in the build up to the goal. It's all

(05:21):
the main players there aside from Britt Benicci, all involved
to getting them to that match winning goal as well.
Big thing for colling Wood. I'm going to call it
out all year. You still can't defend transition. A good
team will cut you to pieces. You need to learn
how to defend transitions out of your defensive.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Fifty baby steps for them, baby steps. They've got to
win and Rubischliker was stoked with it.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Yeah, as you would be as well. First win in
front of home in so long. Oh, this is going
to be fun. This is going to be a fun time.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Go Alex, kick us off.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
People's first Dady and the Gold Coast Sons three three
twenty one, my beloved Sydney Swan's fifteen thirteen or one
eight and one three? Actually is one is fifteen thirteen.
I've put an extra number in there because I wish
they'd kicked an extra goal. But where else are we
going to start off this Sydney Swan's victory. Wow. Chloe malloy.
Loe molloy seven goals, three thirteen score involvements, funnily enough,

(06:12):
not her high score involvements in her crew. She has
seventeen in a game. That's just ridiculous. It is ridiculous.
But she's kicked seven. But Chloe, I love you. That
be better.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
You could have kicked ten, could have broken the record.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Should I reckon? She She'll look back on the game
and obviously brook Loughland is now the forwards coach, the
forwards coach at the Swan. She held the record when
she kicked it when she was at the Dogs, I believe,
and she's probably seen them going, oh my record's so
gone here when Chloe has five at halftime, it was
it was great to see. And I'm gonna ask this,
I don't do you think Chloe Milloy's played two better

(06:45):
back to back games? Ever? She probably paid better games,
but has she played them back to back as well? Ever?

Speaker 3 (06:50):
I mean also I think just the context coming off
the injury probably not like and with the score involvements
plus her own scores, I mean it's all time clutch.
She just kicked eleven goals in the opening two matches then,
am I right?

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah? Yeah you can think that. Well, the leading goal
kicker last year kicked twenty one. Yeah, that's that's getting broken.
Could be on track. And it's also you look Jazz
Ghan's kicks and goals as well. Thirty might be with
the winner this year. Which we're at this stage at
the afl W where records are going to be broken
near on near, and I think that's really exciting just

(07:26):
seeing every year history sort of be made, but to
the Swan's biggest win, their highest score ever and of
a point six of the seven high scores in the
AFL W have been at AFL grounds. Might be something
in that.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Hello everyone at Docklands, just checking in.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Just just hi, Alex here, just trying to twenty bucks
once again.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
I'll do it for twenty footy at AFL ground.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah exactly. But the Swans, they could have won this
by a lot more. They butchered the footy going inside
fifty and it's the same what they did against Richmond
last week as well. They missed some easy shots in
front of golf. They had two five at quarter time
and in the back of your mind you're thinking, and
this is my Swan's fan hat firmly on going, oh
you know the gold coaster still technically in this that

(08:07):
they never really had a chance. Yeah, but it's if
they clean up that efficiency. They could have kicked twenty goals.
That's when malloy kicks the ten. Obviously, Montana ham like,
we're not going to talk about her as much, but
she's had twenty seven kick two, probably could have had four.
Laura Gardner she had fifteen touches at court a time
ended up with thirty nine, like just just a day out.
It was insane and I a zippy fish had twenty seven,

(08:30):
but you know zippy, Yeah, I love her. She's played amazing,
probably going to get the rising start on and she's
probably not in the three or four best players for
this ones on the day they.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Had an absolute day out. I also think there's just
a bit in that with the opposition. They're coming off
a couple of big wins off lower level competition.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
But next week they take on the cuts.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yes, so I think that's where, you know, we can
really see where they're at, especially.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
The Swan's will. Also once again they played added AFL
ground down a GMHBA as well, so it'll be interesting
to see how they go. Shout out to Amelie Martin
kicking a goal on debut. I thought that was lovely.
And for the Sons, we do need to talk a
bit about them because obviously they were the opposition here.
Havana Harris I want to see her in the midfield
because they just made too many simple mistakes trying to
get the ball into the ford line. And we've seen

(09:15):
that she's an athlete and she can take a mark,
she can lay a tackle. She laid out Zebie Fish
at one point. Apparently their best friends from the academies
from when they played all Australis and stuff, so that
was really funny. But I want to see more of
her in the midfield helping out Charlie Robot and Losey
single And I thought Gervan was quite good for the
Suns on a day where nothing was really good for them.

(09:35):
That there's a lot of work to do there.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah, and you know what, putting Harris in the midfield,
why not, why not change up a little bit of
the structure. I mean, it seems like it's going to
be the season that the Suns can just play with
it a little bit and see what works.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
There's no expectations on them. They're going to get some
more kids through the academy again next year. Yes, it's
all about the building blocks for the future now as well.
And shout out to Julia Sullivan kicking her first ever goal. Great,
it was a good day for the Swans. Casey Fields.
I caught up on this this morning because it was
on the same time as the other game Melbourne thirteen
eleven eighty nine belted since killed it two three fifteen. Yeah,

(10:12):
what in the world happened here?

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Melbourne had a day out and I think probably we
went into the match thinking the Saints, we're going to
bring a little bit more heat after their big upset
win over the Crows in round one, but the D's
just said absolutely not. We're on our home deck out
at Casey, it's a beautiful sunny day and we're just
going to go with it and we're going to give
it our all. And Taylor Harris is just going to

(10:36):
be a stuff.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Four goals, four goals at halftime. She had same as
Malloy for at halftime. I think it's like they've all
got like the equal record with a few other players
Jazz going later on, we'll talk about two.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, Taylor Harris was unbelievable. Took a great contested mark.
Does she look She looks great. She looks really good.
I mean, we'll be concerned after she poked herself in
the ie in round one and had to end up
at the doctor's office, but that was not a bother
at all, as she kicked the opening three goals, the
opening three of the D's goals, so three or four
were in the opening moments she was a start, but

(11:10):
she had a whole bunch of superstars coming up with
her and taking it to the Saints. The D's inside
fifty count they just smashed it as per the scoreboard
shows forty two to eighteen. So they really clean, sorry
clean deliveries into the forward line and they smash uncontested possessions.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Really really tells the story of the day.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
You're going to struggle to kick girls if you only
have eighteen inside fifties a day. And this is the
biggest problem with sin Kiln, and we'll talk more about
the D's. Of course, they have weeks where they're good,
then the next week they are the worst team in
the competition, and that's the sort of their level. They
need to have those games where they're a negative three.
They need to bring that up to being at least
a four like they drop off so dramatically. It's a concern.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, And I think the concern would be that their
game plan. I think they could tell what was going
on with Melbourne. It was just constantly going forward, so
they were just flooding the back line defensively, pretty much
all their players were in the back line. So once
the time to switch came, they had no one to
go to, which was really challenging of course to hit
the scoreboard. They got smashed in the midfield. The D's

(12:14):
just doing what they did between Pax Paxman was unreal.
That's such a tongue twister of a game, but brilliant.
She had some great connection with Eden's anchor. They had
a couple of players where they were just absolutely aligned
and hit the scoreboard.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
So it was really good to see. Very well.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Absolutely yeah. She's had a couple of great games for
the Saints though. Backing up performance last week Georgia Patrichios,
she's so good, so good. I just felt for her
though because she didn't really have anyone going with her,
but she had nineteen and eight tackles. Just they didn't
really have the chance to get the game on their
term at all. The DZO there, spread and carry out

(12:57):
of the contest.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Was really classy, really elite.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
They look really slick, so look really connected and I'm
thinking they're the ones that are going to take it
to the Ruse ooh big core. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
I mean you've got a forward line that's firing obviously
Kate Hawes, but playing very well. Hopefully Olivia Purcell isn't
too bad. I needed we don't know yet recording this
Monday lunchtime, so all right.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
Yeah, she came off in the second quarter with a
knee injury, which you know, that's a big concern for
the D's knowing that she's been riddled with injuries. She's
had an ACL last year that preseason match, had a
facial fracture, so she hasn't really had much luck on
her side. So as you mentioned, we don't know what
that result is. The fingers crossed for her because she

(13:41):
was having a day out as well. She had fourteen
or so touches by quarter time. She was looking to
be a best on ground performer. So yeah, that's a
real shame. But I think the Saints had just been
humbled a little bit after their Crows win, and I.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Think most people expected the D's to win that game,
but for some have a record loss. I don't think
anyone sort of saw that coming. But it also means
after an average last year, the D's they are they
are back, absolutely, they are. Like I know, they've beaten up,
like they've beaten a team who was bottom four last year,
in a team who was quite disappointing last year as

(14:16):
well in sin Kilda. But all you've got to do
is win. Their percentage is five hundred. They look impervious
to anything. At the moment. It's it's a great start
and I think they needed that platform. It's a game.
I don't know if it's like round ten, round eleven,
I've already got it circled Sydney and the D's. That
could be a top four spot on the line.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Absolutely later in the year.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Yeah, and I think the fixering comes into play here
because as I just mentioned, I think the D's can
take it to the Ruse, but we were not going
to see that in the regular season, so that might
be potentially a big finals matchup.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Seventeen games not asking for a lot, Fremantle Community Oval.
This was a high class game. Despite what the scoreboard's
going to tell you. This was great football to watch.
Free five or five thirty five, Okay, that's all right,
Brisbane seventeen to three, one oh five. They heard me going, hey,
you're going to go zero until it's the longest trip

(15:08):
in football, Brisbane. You know the girls Hotter Coda, Davidson,
Ali Anderson, Jade Ellinger, insert every other star in that team.
Wait ah, seventeen goals three. They sure as hell practice
the goal kicking during the week, didn't they.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Yeah, absolutely they did. He hear your call and.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
Oh I got to realize I do have a platform.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Maybe, they answered perfectly. They definitely took their score kicking. Sorry,
they're goalkicking training a bit more seriously last week, I think,
and they turned that around their score accuracy seventeen three,
as you said, so they fixed up where they went
wrong against the Hawks in round one.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Super accurate. Tough day of the office for Freeo. The
dog has kicked the first goal about a minute and beauty,
this is a great start. This is how we go.
This is great. At quarter time the game was in
the balance and then Brisbane just exploded like it just
it's something that these top teams where it's where it is.
We'll talk about Adelaide as well, where it's an North
and adelaidea Brisbane they just have that next gear that

(16:09):
other teams don't have yet but are slowly developing. And
like they've kicked their highest ever score. They fixed up
what went wrong last week. They got their connection, they
got their run game going, which is what they really
couldn't get going last week. Horse pressure was unbelievable. But
their handball game, the possession changed through the through the
midfield was fantastic. Courtney Hodder kicks three, Dak Davidson a couple,

(16:31):
Nissa Duley kicks two on debut. But this the vision
that we're going to roll now as we're playing with
Nissa kicking her first goal. It starts off with the
defensive grab and then just the chain of possessions through.
I know they get a bit lucky when it gets
out the back after the kick from half back. You've
got to read that play though, but you do where
you know, then Smith takes the running bounce as well
as it's inside fifty over to Duley. It's just a

(16:52):
great running team goal where they're just running in waves
as well, and I think that's where they got where
they really got going. Like seven of the lines multiple
goals and nine overall of kick goals on their day
and it's like Ali Anderson has twenty five. The Lions
are just sort of really strutting their stuff. But you
look on the other side for Freo, Aasie McCarthy was

(17:12):
phenomenal twenty eight touches and a goal jiah Aboo. I
was just like, yeah, cool, I'm still back another twelve tackles.
I think her Maronov and Tanya Kennedy are going to
break records for tackles this year for sure. They've laid
a lot of tackles to start. It's just a big
day for a big team. Ash Brazil injury concern again,
still haven't heard anything from their Frio's defense can't take

(17:33):
many injuries this year. They got struck with the injury
bug last year. They don't need it again.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yeah. Absolutely, and I think this will be a learning
game for Freo.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
They came into the season, you know, with a lot
of high expectations, but also a completely different game plan
from last year, as we've already mentioned previously, brought bringing
in a lot of height, so they've got a different
game style to get across. And I mean there's no
bigger challenge than facing the Lions as well when they
want to respond big.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yeah. And yeah they're both now one and one, so
to be interesting to see how free are bounced back.
Obviously Brisbane it's like, oh, well they're in the groove now.
Maybe it's like they it's that slow build up towards
the season. They just got caught on the hop last
week and a kick goes either way last week they
still win that game. You're like, ah, it's fine, they're too er,
but it's just like no seven en goals. The next week,
it's like bring it on, big response. Hey. Saturday Night

(18:20):
at Frankston Hawthorn three twelve thirty defeat Carlton two ten
twenty two. This score not great in the scheme of
things with a with AFLW and what we sort of
want to build as the game. Hawthorne for two weeks
in a row have kicked horrendously and have still found
ways to win a game. And I think that's the
main story that we take out of this. But what

(18:40):
do we think about Frankston as a venue, Like, yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Let's talk about that. I donnas Saturday night as well.
Under Line, it's so cold.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
I was at home rugged up after beating at the MCG.
It was cold enough as it is, but down at
Frankston next to the water, it's windy as all can be.
And you can see with the goal kicking just looking
at the score. But if you've watched the game, kicks
are going through and then they just chuck a bit
of a leg spinner there or an off cutter, and
it's just it's not great for footy and it's not

(19:08):
a great spectacle to watch either. It was a great
contested game, yeah, but for football purists and how we
want to grow AFLW, this wasn't a great a great
thing to watch and it gives unfortunately, it gives the
worst people in the world a ways. Ah, this is
all crap and stuff. But if you watch the game,
high quality football, very good defensive pressure, good contested footy around.

(19:28):
It's just that we're playing in a win swept over
on a Saturday night where I reckon if you had
any of the men's games from the weekend go down there,
they would have kicked seven goals fifteen as well exactly
we saw last night what Brisbane kicked thirteen twenty two
or something when there was no wind at the Gabba.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Yeah, that's a whole other conversation. But also tell me
about the holding the ball rule interpretation because you have thoughts.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
I don't like it. I said it last week and
I still don't like it. I think the umpires have
been have gone to the m degree with it. They've
gone too far, they've gone too hardh with it. And
Daniel Webster has come out in his press conference and
he's basically like, well, we're not rewarding the person going
for the footy. We're better off not trying to win
the ball and just tapping it along. And it's gone
too far. Like Betsy was pinned six times holding the ball.

(20:13):
There was over forty free kicks paid. It's just it's
not good to watch because we're talking about getting the
game flowing, and I think certain holding the ball calls
are great because it does get the game flyying, but
when you're pulling up so many of them, it actually
slows the game down because you're stopping to reward the
free kick, and that's where the fine balancing act of

(20:34):
it goes. And some of them are just like they
pick up the ball, they take a step, they get tackled.
It's holding the ball. It's that they've had no prior opportunity.
So I understand you wanting less ball ups and stoppages
and things like that, but there's a bit of common
sense that needs to be applied in this instance.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Does it feel like they're gone to another extreme because
in round one, we were a bit confused about when
they were going to pay it and so it sounds
like they've been paying it a bit too often in
this game. So well they were they need a bit
of a happy medium.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
This game was really bad for it and I thought
wereas in round one. There are a few ones that's
that doesn't feel right. You weren't really a bit confused,
but this game especially I suppose given the contested nature
of its Saturday night at the Oval, it does happen.
So but in talking about the game, Tillie Lucaschrove, they've
started this season off in dashing form just to run

(21:23):
and carry that they're bringing off half back super fit
a lot of drive, like a lot of meters game,
which is sort of what Hawthorne need to get their
game going. And they feel like a player that's really
going to set them up from an offensive point of
view off half back. And at one point they did
go close to an hour without a goal because Carlton's
defensive unit was fantastic like Darcy Vessio laid five tackles

(21:43):
and Cordon a thirteen inter set possessions with ten marks
like Carlton have I think realized from mistakes of last
year they leaked goals too much. By putting Darcio down
back and having Cordon it there, it just really sets them,
really sets them up with a good solid foundation. As
we've seen with some of the men's pros as well,
building from a strong defense is the best way to
start moving forward.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
This seems like a decent result for the Blues as well,
like they got the win against the Pies in round one,
but Hawks are a different team completely and you know,
probably going to be at there at the pointy end
of the competition. So for Carlton to only go down
by eight points and it could have been different they
if they kicked straighter. So that seems like a good
result for the Blues. I mean, obviously they'd want the win,

(22:26):
but just to be in there in the contest and against.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
The team that is probably going to fish in the
top six as well. And Sophie McKay, you can be
more selfish in the forward line. I understand doing the
team thing, but you've got yourself in a positions. Kick
the goal, Just kick the goal.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Just kick the goal.

Speaker 1 (22:40):
So we needed in this game just sell the goal.
Let's go across to Sunday where there was a lot
of games of football on in a short period of
time and it was a great day in Melbourne yesterday
the hashtag day for It. It was definitely a day
for it. Richmond three three twenty one defeated by the
Western Bulldogs six six forty two in what was the
upset of the round.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Take it away, Jess, upset of the round. That's a
big call.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
But look, it was a very level contest for the
first three terms of this game before the Dogs stepped
up in the fourth. But I mean when I say
stepped up, they managed a couple of goals and kept
the Tigers goalless. So the nature of the game was
very contested. But for both teams it was a struggle
of moving forward to the forward line, so very defensive game.

(23:27):
They were both flooding the back lines and then yeah,
not a whole lot to go to when they were
going into attack.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
Well we saw last week the Dogs only kicked the
one goal against the D's and then Richmond had their
struggles against the Swans ended up having to send Beck
miller Ford to kick two goals of their five through
the week. So these are two teams that don't have
the best forward lines, they're going to have to find
makeshift ways to score goals. I do love Alayan Greek
in that Western Bulldog's forward line. She is just a

(23:55):
just like a what is it when you're like you're
the you know, your little spark that gets them going. Yeah,
she's the spitfire to get them all started. Like if
she lays a great defensive tackle in the forward line,
because she's so quick and can lay those tackles and
now she's adding goal scoring into it as well. She's
a player that can really get the Dogs going. And
I think also for them. Moving Jazz Smith into the

(24:15):
midfield as well has been a really good start of
the season. She's racked up possessions like there's no tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Absolutely, Just speaking of the forward lines the Dogs, Drafty
and McDonald. She slots in quite nicely with Elane and
although she didn't hit the scoreboard herself, she was definitely
involved in scoring opportunities, which is great to see. They're
teamed up quite nicely, but the Tiger's unable to take
a mark inside fifty even though that Katie Brennan and

(24:42):
Katelyn Greiser up there, so that was just it was
tough to watch because you've got the talent there to
kick goals. But it's just a battle of the developing
forward lines, I guess, and those structures was really the
story of the game. What I did like though from
the game was their aerial presence from both teams, especially Dogs.

(25:03):
Key defender Kaylee Kimbush took some strong She took seven marks,
really shutting down the tags going into attack. Yeah, the Dogs,
they probably could have had a few more on the scoreboard.
They did miss a few easy sitters, which they would
probably have that in review. But yeah, it was the

(25:26):
Dogs did well to come out on top. But otherwise
it was a fairly level contest.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
This Richmond team, and let's be honest, they're disappointing to
lose to the Western Bulldogs after they probably should have
got flogged in round one. Two. This is really disappointing.
This is a list that has underperformed for years. You
have the best player, one of the top three players
in the competition in mon Kong. You have a legend
in Katie Brennan, and you're serving up this and I

(25:54):
know it's round two, but this isn't good enough. This
is a team that a lot of people are. They're
going to do a bit this year. They're going to
play finals. If they play like this, they're going to
struggle to win three games. This is a disappointing result,
and they've kept mond Conti sort of quiet with that.
She's only had twenty one touches. I know she started
six clearances, but the Dogs did set a loose tag.

(26:15):
But yeah, this isn't good enough.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
Yeah, and I mean we have mentioned this before. How
much can you rely on mon Conti. They've also spoken
about the youth coming through the team. The senior players
were probably a little bit more confident going into the
season that the youthful nature of the team could take
them a little bit further. They were talking finals.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
So they're not playing finals.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Yeah, it's a little bit of a reality check for them,
but it.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Sounds rough to say in round two, but if the
Dogs keep this up, they are a million to one
to play finals. Yeah, I reckon, there's ten at the
moment after two rounds, I could name ten teams that
are better than them. Yeah. Absolutely, hopefully it is a
reality check for them. They're in there today doing recovery,
doing their reviewing, Like, oh, we need to really turn
this around quickly. Got dream time this week against the Bombers.

(27:02):
Obviously we had the amazing draw there last year. If
there's ever a time to turn around, it's dream time
up in Darwin. Absolutely get the pickle juice ready because
all boys.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
Yeah, I was gonna say, yeah, it's a tough challenge
going up north, but make a statement.

Speaker 1 (27:15):
And Grace Egan with the busted lip. If you've seen
her photo on Instagram, it is a very very deep
cut on the lipp. Currently it's a fourth visit to
the dentist this year. That's not ideal. Grace, please wear
your mouthguard if you're not wearing one Arden Street. Oh
this is for UJS North Melbourne unveiling, unfurling, raising the
flag from winning last year, as well as a lovely

(27:37):
touch with the banner as well. Thirteen nine eighty seven
have belted Port Adelaide. Who will I'll be honest, I'm
really disappointing two three fifteen. I've written one note here.
Oh no, no one is going to beat North Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Yeah, they just seem like a class above watching their skills,
just going end to end coming out of the contest.
The hairb game just they really hit most of their targets.
They're very clean with the ball. Yeah, very impressive over
Port Adelaide.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
I mean they oh, they were disappointing that.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
They have a couple of outs in defense there, so
their back line was down, so the Ruse could really
just pounce. But in saying that, Jasmin Ghana personal best
six unreal goals and just her right hand woman in
ash Riddell forty three. If it's not Harry, she's all
breaking a game's disposals record, it's ash Riddel.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
Equaling the record with forty three, so.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
Well ver the goal, so she was unreal.

Speaker 3 (28:43):
I actually did see a comment on social media saying
why is it the North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos. It should
be the North Melbourne Irish Kangaroos. But the amount of
Irish girls they've got running around doing great things.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
Cynthia Hamilton's goalie is in trouble. She has the goal
of the year kicked at the moment. It's in trouble.
If Blaflin Bogue and Amy Gavin Mangan have their way,
once they learn how to bounce, Once they learned how
to bounce, it's there. I would to Arch Street yesterday
to watch it and just watching them like sprint away
and just throw the board in. Oh god, I hope

(29:18):
this comes back. Just the way that they bounced the footy.
It's so exciting to watch, Like, if you're ever going
to watch a team, if you're not, if you you
know you're not a supporter of AFLW, you haven't watched it.
Watched North Melbourne play because they're really good and they
have excitement machines in these Obviously they've got a bunch
of Irish plays as well. Vicky Wall first game back
as well, has a thumping boot on her as well.

(29:39):
But once they learned how to bounce, I think it
was a bogue in the first quarter. Took a couple
of running bounces, took a step inside, try to do
a jink and then got a run down by Alyssa Brook.
It was absolutely goal of the year if she kicked
it until she got tackled. The best thing to take
out of this pure footy one O one is Jasmine

(30:01):
Ghana's first goal. In the first goal of the game.

Speaker 3 (30:03):
I was going to leave that to you to touch
on because you were very excited about it.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
It happened right in front of me. I was just
standing in the forward pocket with a friend of mine
who's good friends with Talia Randall. So basically whenever we
watched North games, we just follow Talia around the oval absolutely,
and it's just it's the vision will be playing now.
It's just a throw up, it's just a perfect tap
from Randall down to Ghana snap goal. It's just perfect

(30:28):
clearance footy, stoppage footy.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
Yeah, and she can kick them from anywhere. She was
just unreal.

Speaker 3 (30:34):
And I really want to highlight one piece of plate
from Ghana. She was all the way back in defense
and the ball was coming out of defense and you
just watch her running all the way through to get
herself into a position in right in front of goals
to be on the receiving end snap goal.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
And yeah, she was unreal. Her work rate is just
she just went.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
Her and Ashradel just simply insane. But also without Cuthbertson
and Amelia borg put A struggled and we knew they
were going to struggle. Like they're lucky that Kate Sheelah
had an almost day. She could not take a mark
to save herself. Unfortunately, it's one of those days where
last week, Tylie Randall struggled, Chila had a day out.
When it all clicks for North, the scary thing is
they're going to get even better, Like it's it's wild

(31:19):
to think that this seventy two point win is their biggest.
How have they not had a bigger one yet? Like,
I know they're gonna have a tougher drawer every year,
but it seems wild to me that that's their biggest win.

Speaker 3 (31:30):
But that's just such a testament to this team and
the depth. If one person's not having their best day,
somebody else's up there just performing. Just more about the
game though, it was quite actually even in the middle,
but unfortunately for Port, the North smashed uncontested possession handball game.
Of course, I got that rolling, yeah, And it was

(31:51):
just pretty much midway through the first term, you knew
how this is going to go because they're inside fifty.
Count was already up like eleven to three or something
something crazy. Unfortunately for Port, though, eleven of thirteen goals
came from intercept possessions for North, so that's something that
North can that the power can have a look at.

(32:11):
Of course, Schultz was very well contained, just to sixteen
touches and I know you mentioned it before, but a
highlight for Port fans is definitely the Ilyssa Brook Rundown
tackle on Vogue. So that was an exciting sight to see,
but unfortunately not many more exciting moments for Port fans
to get around.

Speaker 1 (32:28):
The two goals are actually pretty nice goals as well,
but it's just unfortunately you've kicked two goals and they've
just been smashed. Like just you've got Libby Burschett down there,
just a brick wall, like, go on, try and get
through me. It's fine, like just so calm under pressure.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
Yeah, North, Yeah, it was just fun to watch as
a fan.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Just yeah, we did touch on it at the start.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
But the unveiling of the flag was a really nice
moment at Arden Street, the first opportunity for the Ruse
to celebrate their flag at the home ground with their
home fans crowd there. The men's team all came out
of cause the day after their season ended, so.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
They're on the coke zeros. It looked like they're on
the beers. They're on the coke heros. They walked past me.
If you saw the red cans, they were coke zeros.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (33:08):
Okay, j and vouch like, that's that's not me sticking
up for the boys. They were coke zeros.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Yeah yeah, so really nice out. But of course they
are over talking about the premiership because that's exactly what
Riddell said in her post match she said, they're done
with it, so let's move on.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
Okay, we'll move on. There also fireworks during the day,
hate them. Don't like fireworks during the day. I get it,
don't We'll turn it.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Streamers like big, like a big confetti gun. Yeah, but
then that makes a mess on the field exactly. I
can think of something better. Arden Street. Essendon have snatched
victory from the jaws of defeat. At Arden's records, I'm trader,
write down that's how good I'm going Windy Hill. That's
my bad. I left Arden Street to go to Windy Hill.
I doubled up. Yesterday Essendon four seven thirty one defeated

(33:54):
West Coast four to twenty six. Now say that Essendon
have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, but West
Coast snatch defeet from the jaws of victory.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
I feel oh that is yeah, West Coast. We need
to have a chat.

Speaker 1 (34:07):
Daisy Pierce will just be staring at the screen and
in fairness before we get in this, Essendon deserve to
win this game. They should have been well in front
because they absolutely peppered the goals in the second and
third quarter and just could not get one through. They
deserve to win this game of footy. West Coast though,

(34:28):
had the game won with a minute and a half
to go, there's a scram and if people who haven't
watched it, I've talked about it on social media as well,
but there's a scramble for the footy. There's just a
pop up kick that lands about sort of sixty out
from Essenon's goal. Four West Coast players are standing there.
One of them just has to take the mark and
it is game over. You can kill a minute when

(34:50):
you've got Ella Roberts like right there. They just let
it bounce. They let it bounce. It's the first rule
of footy. Don't let it hit the ground. Take the
grab you up time you win the game. Unfortunately they've
let it bounce and it leads, it leads to a screamage.
It gets over their back. So Ifhia Alexander takes the mark,
ten meters out with thirty seconds to go and they've

(35:10):
won the game. It's a game that Essenon did deserve
to win. But West Coast will be going, how the
hell did we lose that?

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Yeah, that's something that they will absolutely be reviewing come
today or tomorrow, and it might just see one of
those learning like those developing learning moments. You've got to
know how to win in those last dying moments, especially
in those close games.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
So yeah, for Daisy, Piers will be telling her girls.

Speaker 1 (35:33):
It was great desperation from essen and just to really
really keep on pushing through just to try and force
the issue there. And if you weren't there at the ground,
there was a fairly heavy breeze going towards the left
of screen as well, So West Coast I've had the
breeze in the last quarter and haven't been able to
get the job done. But this game was very tight
and tense. This is two teams who are growing and

(35:53):
moving up the ladder and it was really tight and inside.
We saw last week Ella Roberts just got her game run.
Un game going obviously, Prosparcus and NaN's Gonegainst Gws were
up and going as well, but it was really tighten inside.
Bonnie too Good was a target all day.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
But our girl Painter couldn't get on the scoreboard.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Kick the point, let you down, But it was it was.
It was a tough day like this scoreboard says it.
But it was a very tight and inside contested game.
There was a couple of big contests as well in
the middle of the ground throughout the afternoon as well,
like some very good physical hits as well. I've got
it written down here somewhere, and I need to find
it because it was like the sound of it, like

(36:32):
sounded like an absolute cannon going off, and you know
what one of those ones when everyone goes oh when
the cont contact happens. And I'll find it here because
I need to find it. It's really annoying me that
I didn't didn't write it down on this Oh God.
Darry Banister and Roxy Rooe. Banister absolutely lined up Rue
and Banister ended up on her backside, and Rue was

(36:53):
just like, yeah, take that, and the contact was amazing.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
They're tough.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
Oh yeah. I would have ended up back in the
city if banisterill ligned me up like I know.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
I just would be snapped in half like a twig.

Speaker 1 (37:05):
Oh yeah, that's like my fiance. I just don't want
to do.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
That, but I'm glad some people do want to do it.

Speaker 1 (37:12):
But Essendon after last season, like they made the finals
two and oh, this is a really good start West
Coast of one and one. It'll be pretty flat that
they're not two and o though.

Speaker 3 (37:22):
Absolutely absolutely, but we move on only Oval, Only Oval.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
Adelaide ten five sixty five Geelong three nine twenty seven.
Yet another team that heard my criticism and took it personally.
The Crows.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
Do you know what, the scoreboard does not tell the
accurate story. You would think if you just looked at
the score here, you would go Adelaide, we're on top
all day now. They absolutely weren't new This game was
made in the final quarter.

Speaker 1 (37:50):
This was a sixteen minute game of football.

Speaker 3 (37:52):
Absolutely, these two teams were neck and neck of that
whole way. Geelong, I think we're actually up at three
quarter time by a couple of points, yep, and then
just blew the lid off. They kind of they just
saw a win within reach and they went for it
seven to zero. Final term they kicked seven goals straight

(38:12):
in a big statement win, a statement win that takes
them to an eleven ZIP record at Only Oval.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
And the Swan's playing them at Only Oval.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
Oh well, okay, good luck to you.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
Come on, I fl put it at Norwood. We don't
have scars from when we lost a semi by seventy there, but.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
It's still triggered.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
Four goals in six minutes just completely shifted the momentum.

Speaker 1 (38:36):
They had twelve in that six minutes, they had twelve kicks.
Twelve kicks. That just feels twelve kicks to two led
to four goals. It was. It was ridiculous. But the
will pump up Adelaide in a second because they deserve it.
Gil Long have conceded eighteen goals this season in two games.
Not too bad. Twelve of them have been in the

(38:56):
last quarter. They realized that there's a four quarter right
their second half fade out to start the season. Yeah,
he is already a concern like they've been. They've been
in these games. I know, starting off against North and
Adelaide is tough.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
And the Swan's next week.

Speaker 1 (39:11):
We'll get to that one in a second, but this
was a chance for them to knock off the Crows
one and one. They're setting up their season. Now they've
just been blown out of the park again in the
last quarter and you're like, oh, like you're scratching your
head wondering what's going on because they were cooked in
the last quarter and we were concerned, and we were
concerned about Adelaide last week for their lack of sharpness
and possible like lack of conditioning as well. They just

(39:34):
came out in that last quarter and went psycho. Obviously,
Chelsea Randall missing from last week.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
Yes, she was at her brother's wedding.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Weddings at the start of the season.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
Chelsea, I'd be telling my brother, what are you doing. Well,
work the schedule, worked the wedding.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Around me, locked in my wedding venue over the weekend
as well. It's not clashing with anything.

Speaker 3 (39:51):
Great good. Yeah, she was clearly the missing piece from
last week. She returned to the forward line. She's of
course the former premiership captor and she'll be staying in
the attacking spot.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
After kicking three.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
Goals, Yeah, I'm Chelsea Randall, this is where I'm playing
And you're like, yes, mate.

Speaker 3 (40:07):
Yes exactly. Ebdy Maronov just never counter out. She's a superstar.
Huge again thirty one disposals, ten tackles, best and fairest
form you'd think, and Aloise Jones just super classy game
high seven score involvements. So the Crows were flying. I
think we you know, the really interesting thing is though

(40:28):
the Cats plus thirty eight in uncontested possessions.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
They were as we've mentioned, they were fun in the
first half, you just would not know it. By the
end of the game.

Speaker 3 (40:37):
The Cats actually had nine more inside fifties than the Crows,
with a goal efficiency alex of seven percent. I think
that's where the game was lost for them. Yeah, they
just completely fell away. We've spoken about how they did that.

Speaker 1 (40:52):
They kicking goal after the eight minute mark of the
second quarter. You're not going to win games of footy
doing that. It's pretty simple. And they've had the difficult start,
as we've said, by playing the rules and the Crows,
and now they play what looks to be the fittest
team in the competition, second fittest. Adelaie's probably sorry, North
Melbourne's probably the fittest. They're going to play the Swans
at GMHBO next weekend. A Swans that have a Laura

(41:15):
Gardner and Darcy Maloney who not that they're going to
say they want a revenge game, but they will be
pumped up to beat Geelong in Geelong after leaving the catch,
shall we say exactly?

Speaker 2 (41:24):
I think they've got a Chloe malloy who's on a roll.

Speaker 1 (41:27):
Jael malloy and McDonald next week is going to be
a fun matchup exactly. But yeah, it's going to be
a very interesting game for Geelong next week because they
need to turn these second half slumps around. Yep, I'm
going to back them in to do it because they're
a good enough team. Oh I'm going to tip the
Swans obviously, but I'll back them into not get completely
run over.

Speaker 2 (41:46):
Almost had me there.

Speaker 3 (41:46):
I thought you were saying you were back in the
medicainst your sword after.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
The Swans ha kicked the high score of as if
I'm going to jump off them as well.

Speaker 3 (41:53):
The thing is, though, for Geelong, we talked about them
preseason as a serious contender this year, like a big
throughout this season.

Speaker 1 (42:01):
We have to win this weekend.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
Well that's it.

Speaker 3 (42:03):
Once you lose the first two or three games, it's
a hard fight back, especially in a short season.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
If you zero on three, you almost need to go
seven and two to finish off.

Speaker 2 (42:12):
That's it.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
That's pretty tough to do.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
It's tough, right.

Speaker 1 (42:14):
We'll take a look at the ladder now as well,
and the Demons percentage coming out the Wazoo five hundred
percent to kick off this season as well, they are
well on top at the moment.

Speaker 2 (42:26):
Crazy Ru's nicely sitting in second.

Speaker 1 (42:29):
Yeah, the rus in its second with three hundred and
eighty three percent. The Swan's got a big percentage boost
last week there on two hundred and seventy two percent,
and then you've got Essen and Hawthorne arounding out the
two teams that are unbeaten. Brisbane all of a sudden
they're sixth by winning. Winning by about eighty points will
do that for your Carlton and Adelaide around out the
top eight. The concerning part is Geelong as sixteenth and

(42:53):
Port Adelaide eighteenth. Those percentages which can turn around quickly
as we've seen, but Port out i'd been down there
as a concern. I don't think Gold Coast and GW
has been in the bottom four as a shock to anyone.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
Though, no exactly.

Speaker 1 (43:05):
But yeah, that's that'll be interesting to watch over the
coming weeks. But the tipping results.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
We did pretty well.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
We actually did. We're keeping scores this year as well,
so I'm going to keep these updated over the season.
Jess Is just extended out to an early lead. She
is on fifteen for the season, but tipped eight of
nine on the weekend eight of nine.

Speaker 3 (43:24):
Guys, I went against the Lions, and I've been really
pumping up the Dockers these few weeks leading into the
season and the early rounds, but they let me down.
So and I should never counted the lines out. Knew
they were going to respond, but I went against them.
So that's my one game that I went down.

Speaker 1 (43:41):
Tokyo guy, the stats guy, he tipped eight. I tipped seven,
and social giral Spence tipped eight as well. Stats guys.
Last I just wanted to point that out. Big cool
results as well. We'll talk about them every week. We'll
start off with Olivia. She had first of all, she
had Hannah Ewings in, but then Ewings got dropped, so
she pivoted to and goold. Two goals needed three. It's

(44:03):
a bit brutal. Greta body did not kick three for
the stats guy. The Dockers did not upset the lines
for you. Laura Gardner had thirty nine possessions and I
called thirty five.

Speaker 2 (44:14):
Well that's close enough.

Speaker 1 (44:16):
It's a big win for me. The lock results, Painter
lets you down, Painter did me dirty? I was real,
lot of results are meant to be guaranteed. Will Actually it.

Speaker 3 (44:27):
Happened, and you went the safe bet, and after I
went the safe bet.

Speaker 1 (44:32):
And stats guy tip Richmond as his lock.

Speaker 3 (44:35):
Yeah, we did not go to safe bets, So painter,
can we just get back on track next week?

Speaker 1 (44:41):
But yeah, I think like whoever gets in these tips
first or just put North winning as their lock every week.
It's like on the Mencha or whoever was playing s
and then for the last month was that's the lock?
So understandable, I might change it up to something this different,
like clonally kicked six. That feels like a lock the
way she's going at the moment. But yeah, Olivia had
Ebony Maronov to have sick tackles if she laid ten,
So good job, ebonye Maronov. They're best performance of round

(45:06):
two by the team or player who was the best
performer for you?

Speaker 2 (45:10):
Do you know what? It was really actually a hard
one to choose.

Speaker 3 (45:13):
I had about five different Yes, I did have a
few up there.

Speaker 2 (45:16):
I've actually gone with.

Speaker 1 (45:17):
Ash Riddell, you break the possessions right or equal the
possessions record. I think it's fair.

Speaker 3 (45:21):
Yeah, And I think when you're in a team with
just like so many people that can stand up and
so many people they can get their own ball. And
when Jasmin Ghana's kicking six, she's still doing that, like
that's pretty unreal. I thought she had an absolute day out,
so good honor.

Speaker 1 (45:37):
I was going to put chloem alower, but I felt
like putting at the Swans again. Yeah, I went the
Western Bulldogs. They deserve it. Big upset win, doubled the
score of Richmond. And I don't think that I'll be
putting the Dogs in there too many times this year,
whereas I think I might put some like a few
other Swans in there this year or other places. So
the Dogs deserve their plaudits. That's a big win. Team's
got them going well start off the season, have a

(45:59):
