Vicente Gil continua a surpreender muitos quando fala sobre as suas origens étnicas. O ator da novela da SIC 'Vitória', onde dá vida à personagem Afonso, é cigano, mas nunca permitiu que a imagem pejorativa associada à comunidade limitasse a sua ambição.
Nasceu e cresceu no Porto e, desde muito jovem, foi incentivado pela mãe a frequentar teatros, concertos e outros espetáculos da cidade. Chegou mesmo a fazer teatro comunitário nos bairros da periferia. Mais tarde, essas experiências acabariam por definir a sua vocação. Hoje, reconhece a importância de existir “um ator cigano, licenciado, lourinho e lavadinho” na televisão portuguesa. “Eu não pareço cigano porque não correspondo àquela imagem pejorativa. É importante que as pessoas se deparem comigo”, afirma.
O preconceito, no entanto, acompanhou-o desde cedo. Em conversa com Daniel Oliveira, recorda os tempos de escola em que ele e os familiares eram conhecidos como “os ciganitos” e chegaram a ser aconselhados pela própria diretora a não revelarem a mais ninguém a sua origem. “Estas discriminações continuam até hoje, até quando vou à Segurança Social. Não acreditam que uma pessoa como eu pode ser cigana”, lamenta. E, embora compreenda que nem sempre há intenção maliciosa, não deixa de sublinhar: “As nossas instituições são xenófobas; mais facilmente nos pedem a nós para nos modificarmos. E é assim com muitas minorias.”
Com o tempo, porém, aprendeu a transformar os valores da sua identidade étnica numa força. Características que descreve como “pelo na venta”, “garra” e “questionamento sobre o mundo” ajudaram-no a chegar onde está. Acima de tudo, sente profunda gratidão pela educação que recebeu da mãe. “A minha mãe é uma grande mulher cigana. Quem me dera que pudesse ser mãe de muita gente, dar garra a certas famílias”, diz, com um sorriso.
