Nog maar een week geleden was het volgens Donald Trump Liberation day. Nu leek het meer op Caputilatie dag. Onder druk van de financiele markten besloot Trump zijn wederkerige importheffingen uit te stellen. Tenminste, de landen die wilden onderhandelen krijgen allemaal het lagere basistarief van 10%.
De uitzondering was China. Dat krijgt maar liefst 125 procent om de oren. Zij kwamen namelijk wel met tegenheffingen. Zijn ministers overtuigden hem uiteindelijk om in te binden. En zo ging Trump door de knieen. Van the art of the deal naar the art of the kneel. Maar is de onrust nu weg? En hoe zijn de verhoudingen in het Witte Huis nadat Musk Trumps minister van Handel “dommer dan een zak met bakstenen” noemde? En wat vindt de gewone Amerikaan er eigenlijk van?
