De Amerikaanse aanvallen op bootjes bij Venezuela waren al omstreden, maar deze week ontplofte het echt. De Washington Post onthulde dat bij de allereerste missie in september twee opvarenden de raketaanval overleefden, waarna admiraal Frank Bradley alsnog een tweede, dodelijke salvo liet afvuren op de drenkelingen.
Daarmee hebben de Amerikanen mogelijk een oorlogsmisdaad gepleegd. En dus liggen Trump en defensieminister Pete Hegseth onder vuur.
In het Congres groeit de verontwaardiging. Beide partijen eisen antwoorden en vragen zich steeds meer af of aanvallen van de Trump-regering gerechtvaardigd zijn. Gaat het echt om drugs? Of om olie, en dus om geld.
En: na de schietpartij op soldaten in Washington door een Afghaanse vluchteling grijpt Trump de kans om zijn immigratieagenda weer in de schijnwerpers te zetten. Asielprocedures worden stopgezet en de Amerikaanse grenzen gaan dicht voor burgers uit 19 landen.
