Canberra on track for hottest Autumn day in 25 years

It seems summer has finally arrived in the nation's capital.
Only problem is now it's autumn. Temperatures across the canber
region are heading up over the coming days, with the
mercury tip to peak at thirty six degrees on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
We have seen temperatures this high before, notably in two
thousand and nine, ninety eight, eighty six, and nineteen forty.
We've seen five or six consecutive days above thirty degrees.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
That's climatologist Tough McDowell from the Weather Bureau there. As
you said, these temperatures aren't too uncommon for this time
of year, but it's the extended run of thirty plus
degree days this late in the season that's slightly unusual.
Sunday's forecast of thirty six is pretty hot for the
middle of autumn. Some other forecasts have the temperature reaching

closer to thirty seven on the day. If that was
the case, it would be the warmest temperature recorded since
summer began in December. But that's not all so.

If we did see thirty five on Sunday, then that
would actually be the latest time in the autumn we've
seen a temperature of thirty five.
