Martine scheidde van haar man en stond er ineens helemaal alleen voor, met een krap budget. “Ik weet nog dat ik de eerste twee weken vooral zat te huilen: hoe doe ik dit? Mijn salaris ging bijna volledig op aan huur en vaste lasten, ik denk dat ik 100 euro per maand ‘over’ had voor boodschappen en spullen voor de kinderen. Ik heb toen in een burn-out gezeten.”
Johan Fretz weet juist vanuit zijn jeugd hoe het is om het niet breed te hebben. Aan het einde van de maand hadden zijn ouders soms écht geen geld meer om eten te kopen. In zijn beleving was dit gewoon normaal, en eigenlijk veranderde het idee daarover pas toen hij naar school ging. “Ik zag dan dat andere kinderen zes cadeaus kregen van Sinterklaas en dacht: ben ik niet lief geweest, ofzo?”
