Poetin en Trump gaan elkaar treffen in Alaska vrijdag om te praten over Oekraïne. Trump kondigde de ontmoeting vorige week nog groots aan, maar tempert inmiddels de verwachtingen ook al weer.

Volgens Rusland-expert Hubert Smeets is het belangrijk om te kijken of er ook andere dingen dan Oekraïne besproken worden. Bijvoorbeeld over het herstel van de economische en politieke betrekkingen. 'Dan zou Rusland de kans krijgen om de oorlogseconomie her op te bouwen.'
'Europa begint altijd vanuit een achterstand'
Trump en Poetin praten niet me maar over Oekraïne. Europa staat erbij en kijkt ernaar, maar Europese leiders mochten van te voren nog wel even bellen met Trump. De Europeanen klonken optimistisch na dat gesprek. GroenLinks-PvdA-Europarlementariër Thijs Reuten ziet nog geen reden om optimistisch te zijn. Hij stelt dat Europa altijd begint vanuit een achterstand en dat nooit meer goed kan te maken. 'Dat vindt zijn oorsprong in het feit dat er geen gemeenschappelijk buitenlandbeleid is.'
