Nascido em São Paulo (1981), Rafael Gallo vive actualmente em Lisboa. Começou por publicar dois livros no Brasil, um de contos ("Réveillon e outros dias") e um romance ("Rebentar"), antes de vencer o Prémio José Saramago, em 2022, com "Dor Fantasma" (Porto Editora), narrativa protagonizada pelo pianista Rômulo Castelo, uma das mais odiosas e fascinantes personagens da literatura recente em língua portuguesa.
O primeiro romance ("Rebentar") foi entretanto publicado em Portugal, numa nova versão "ampliada, embora com menos páginas". Já em 2024, regressou aos contos, com o volume "Cavalos no Escuro", editado no Brasil pela Record.
