Tune in here to this Monday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen!

Breaking Brett Jensen discusses the most recent stabbing on Charlotte’s light rail, which occurred last Friday. The suspect, Oscar Solarzano, is an illegal alien who had been deported from the United States twice. He had also been suspended from riding the light rail, and there are indications he did not have a ticket at the time of the stabbing.

Later, Jensen speaks with North Carolina Rep. Mark Harris about the incident. Harris, who calls the attack “unbelievable,” says it highlights the need for elected officials who support law enforcement and Border Patrol. He also points to what he describes as a clear problem in Charlotte - a lack of public support for officers trying to do their jobs. According to Harris, this issue has been evident since “Operation Charlotte’s Web,” which took place last month.

Jensen closes the show by discussing an important change coming to WBT later this week. The station will transition to the powerful 100,000-watt 107.9 FM frequency beginning Thursday morning.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Hi, oh, Let's go oh, Let's go oh, Let's go oh,
Let's talk.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Eleven ten and ninety nine three WBT Bret Jenson here
with you, live in and living color on this Monday night,
and this is an edition of Breaking with Brett Jensen
as we go up until seven o'clock, seven oh four, five,
seven oh eleven ten. That is the telephone number. That
is also the WBT text line, driven of course by
Liberty Buick and GMC. And we've got a lot to

(00:55):
get into tonight, like a lot lot, like a lot lot,
and actually going to some of the things that I'm
going to announce is going to impact every single one
of you listening to my voice right now. And we'll
get into that later on in the show. But we're
going to start off tonight with something that is a
personal situation for me, and we're going to get into

(01:17):
a Look, I know a lot of the news happened
over the weekend, and trust me, we're going to be
getting into that because Congressman Mark Harris will be joining
us in about old twelve minutes from now. But I
want to talk about I just want to talk about
somebody that I know, and it's a family and Justin
Sheeley who ran for school board okay down in the

(01:40):
South Charlotte area ran for school board, did not win,
came in second out of three people. Well, he and
his wife have been trying for about eight years to
have a baby and go in like adopt a child.

(02:01):
When the having a baby and the IVF wasn't working
and everything else, and they got the call, hey, we
have a child for you. Now, I will tell you.
You know, Justin and his wife, wife Elizabeth, are by

(02:21):
no means destitute or anything like that, but they're not
of means great means by any stretch. And they felt
compelled by God to help out another child. So they
went up for adoption and the phone call they got was, hey,

(02:41):
they got a call just late last week and they're
going to foster a baby, which hopefully for them, which
they want to lead to adoption. The baby is premature
at thirty four weeks old and has medical issues, and

(03:04):
so they're bringing forth and trying to do everything they
can to make sure that the baby gets through this
little girl.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
And to.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Help out this child and give this child, you know,
a much better life than what it was destined to have.
And so they didn't ask me to do this. They
did not, I swear to everything Holly in this universe.
They did not ask me to do this. But I
am going to ask you, the listener, just because it's

(03:40):
such a great moment of trying to give a better
life to someone else, if maybe you could help out
with you know, you know, diapers, baby formula, something of
that ilk right, Like I said, they're not destitute, but
they are not well, you know, and so every little

(04:04):
bit helps, you know. And so they, like I said,
they've been trying for eight months and final or excuse me,
eight years, and they got the call last week and
they easily could have said no. And it should also
be noted that, uh, Justin and his wife are white
and the little girl is black, and they took in

(04:26):
so a premature, young black baby with medical issues and
they're like, bring it on, bring it on, we got it,
we'll take it. So if any of you could help,
but just by mailing things or dropping things off here
at the station, I would greatly appreciate it. We are

(04:47):
at one Jillian Price Place in Charlotte, And in case
you need to know, our zip is two eight to
two oh eight, but one Jillian Price place right here
in Charlotte, right near the corner of Freedoman Moorhead. We've
been in this building for God for I mean forever.
I don't know how long, but I know I won
a pair of hornet tickets in the eighties and I

(05:08):
had to come by here and pick up the tickets.
So that was in the eighties. So as a matter
of fact, it was the Bob and it was the
Bob and Sherry Show that I won the tickets off
off And I'll never forget the trivia question. If you
are of a certain age, you will remember one of
the very first famous hornets. The two most famous hornets

(05:28):
were Muggsy Bogues, but that first year, because Muggy Bogues
I don't think was here yet. Was Kelly Trapuca, right,
And the question was, what is Kelly Tripuca's first name?
And I was a very young sports reporter and I
may have had the Sports Media Guide with everyone's full names.

(05:52):
So I looked them up and it's Peter. It's either
Kelly Peter Trapuca or Peter Kelly Trapuca one of the other.
But it was Peter, was the answer. And the other
reason I had it was because I had the cheat
sheet as a sports book given to all reporters about
each player by right, So I had the cheat sheet.
And again this was pre internet, so you know anyways,

(06:18):
But again, anything that you can help, Diapers, formulas, you know,
something like that any baby needs. You know, if you've
got clothes that you don't need any more from your infants, great, anything,
but she is currently I think thirty four thirty five
weeks premature, and is and Justin and his wife's wife,

(06:43):
Elizabeth said, don't care about the medical issues, don't care
about the premature, don't care about any of that stuff.
All we care about is trying to provide a better life.
So it's not like this is going to be a
month long cause that I'm going to be pounding the
drum or anything. But I thought it was so worthy,
especially this time of year, that they're trying to give

(07:06):
the gift of a better life, and anything you guys
can do to help out, I know they would appreciate
it immensely and I would as well. So again, one
Julian Price Place here in Charlotte two eight two eight,
Anything that you guys can do if you want to
drop things off or whatever, Okay, Like I said, when
we return, Marc Harris is going to be joining us,
and we're going to be talking about the stabbing that

(07:27):
took place, and he's got some thoughts about that. I'm
sure we'll go back to breaking with Brett Jensen. Got
a lot that we're going to get into tonight, and
we've got a lot that we need to get into
because of what transpired Friday night with the stabbing on
the light rail and a lot of things that took place,

(07:50):
and real quickly, let me just give you a quick
thirty second background on this. A man intoxicated gets on
the light rail, gets off the light rail, gets back
on the light rail, and starts yelling at passengers on
the light rail. One man says, dude, just you need

(08:10):
to calm down. The drunk individual gets up, starts yelling
at him, sort of gets in his face. The victim,
as it turns out, pushes him away. To get him away,
he trips over. The guy falls backwards overseat, gets up
and pulls out a knife, a fixed blade knife, and

(08:31):
stabs him in the chest and then runs off the
light rail at the next stop. Turns out that alleged
attacker is an illegal alien that's been deported twice and
that was already had been suspended from the light rail. Well,
it's kind of hard to keep people suspended if you're

(08:51):
not checking, because apparently there's indication that he didn't have
a ticket again, just like Arina Zarriska on August twenty second,
So I thought, you know what, let's talk to Congressman
markars now. So joining us now is Congressman Markarras. First
of all, Congressman, thank you for joining us tonight. And

(09:12):
second of all, what were your thoughts when you first
heard about the stabbing that had taken place Friday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
When I first heard about it, bred I thought, oh
my god, here we go again. Unbelievable that we would
find ourselves in a situation like this. Of course, at
that point I knew that the victim had been stabbed
in the chest and was in critical condition in the hospital. Thankfully,
he's remained stabilized, even though I think he still listed

(09:39):
as critical. But another tragedy, and then, of course, is
the information continued to come out and we find that
it's an illegal alien who had been deported not once
but twice and allowed or gotten back into our country.
And I think the last time his status was he
was listed as a god away. And here we find

(10:01):
ourselves with another tragic stabbing right here on Charlotte's light rail.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Speaking with the Congressman Mark Harris. And so the fact
that the alleged attacker is an illegal alien, he had
been deported twice, and Border Patrol and Ice just did
some roundups a couple of weeks ago here and in Charlotte,
and you had a lot of the Democrats protesting against it,
including the head of the North County Democrat Party using
four letter words in discussed with a border patrol. But

(10:31):
yet here he is an illegal alien allegedly stabbing someone.
So what are your thoughts about that?

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Well, again, I think that we see the need for
what we've been calling out for, and that is we
got to have elected officials that are supportive of law
enforcement and Border Patrol and Ice doing the work that
they were here to do with Operation Charlotte's Web and

(10:57):
will continue to do. I just think it'sracle that our
elected officials and our general public support their work. I mean,
we have no way of knowing that those that were
out there protesting and trying to just make border Patrol's
life miserable here played some part in this guy maybe
being one of the ones that ran or one of

(11:18):
the ones that hid when he might have been picked
up when they were here in the last couple of weeks.
So again, it speaks to the problem that we have
in not wanting to support our law enforcement that are
trying to do their jobs. And listen, we obviously have
a problem here in Charlotte, and it is a clear problem.

(11:40):
It was pointed out during that time and Border Patrol
was starting their operation by a group that is basically
the Migrant Policy Institute, which is in fact you reported
it that they're actually one hundred thousand illegal immigrants here
in Charlotte. This guy was one among them, and I

(12:01):
think we have to recognize that reality.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
One of the things that I want your opinion on
is when someone is arrested for murder or assault or
rape or something just horribly violent, should they be deported
or should they have to spend time in the US jails?
Because you know, he's already been deported twice and came
back twice.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
He should be deported. And that's the problem. I mean,
one of the reasons that I'm convinced that border patrol
came when they did was because there were nearly fourteen
hundred detainers across North Carolina that had not been honored,
and you had certain areas in our state and certain
sheriffs in our state that were releasing these criminal, illegal

(12:45):
aliens back into North Carolina's neighborhoods. And that's a problem.
That's again, that's why border patrols arrested over four hundred
and twenty five illegal aliens just during that period that
had broken the immigration laws of our country. And I
think when these criminals are picked up, no question, they
should be deported. And as we just go through this season,

(13:08):
in this period of time with these violent criminals in particular,
they need to be deported and out of our country asap. Well.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Speaking with Congressman Mark Harris, so when illegal aliens are
deported because they've committed crimes or whatever, do they go
to jail in those other countries or are they just
set free?

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Do you know, it's my understanding that they're deported to
another country. You know, we had the prison there in
El Salvador that there were a certain number of deportations
that were taking place to that. So I don't know
that they're set free. I don't know the exact answer
to that, but it's my understanding if that they have

(13:49):
committed some kind of violent crime, and most of the
time they're being picked up by border patrol because they're
either out because they're in an area that has cashless
bail or some other reason and they're just out roaming
the streets, but they've committed these crimes.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I'm aware that there's no quick fix and nothing's going
to solve this issue overnight, But do you have any
suggestions or thoughts on how to make this better, especially
with the light rail.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Well, I do know that obviously it's going to take
everybody looking at the situation and recognizing that we have
a problem. We can't stick our head in the sand.
I know there was a lot of that where people
don't want to have these spotlights thrown on Charlotte. There
were some that were concerned when I was and some

(14:36):
other congressmen were asking the governor to bring the National
Guard into Charlotte and answer the cry of the Fraternal
Order of Police that we're saying we're two hundred and
seventy six police officers short of being able to adequately
police our city and the National Guard would be a
short term fix to provide the support and just the

(14:59):
present in the city that would allow the police to
be able to go about their business in policing and
catching these criminals and putting them behind bars. So I
do think and listen. I do think IRENA's law has
had some kind of impact us. All report the other
day of a guy that had shot somebody and now

(15:21):
he was being held with five million dollar bond. I
think that's a good thing. And I think that all
of our leaders if they would just use the bully
pulpit that they have for good and recognizing the importance
of law and order, rather than using that bully pulpit
to somehow go off on our law enforcement, our border patrol,

(15:43):
and our ice agents. I think it would it would
bring far better results in the end. So I think
we've got to continue to work together. I think that
there's plans as the community is working together to come
up with plans on the light rail. It's been a
pretty distinct increase in funding that's going to be there
for security as a result of this one percent sales

(16:06):
tax that was approved, and so I think it's got
to be a priority to build security there without question,
and look, you've got to you've got to let the
citizens know. I was hearing several interviews from folks last
night and over the weekend, and I don't know the
specific figures, but I understand ridership is down a great

(16:29):
deal since the Irena Zaruska incident, and I think that
we're going to have to restore confidence in the citizens
before they're going to write it again.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Congressman Mark Harris, I really do appreciate your time tonight
to talk about this, And if I don't speak to
you before the holidays, I hope you and your family
have a merry Christmas.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Thank you, Brett. I hope you enjoy the Christmas season
and have a very blessed Christmas yourself perfect, all right?

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Once again, thanks to Congressman Harris for joining us. A
lot to unpack. There a lot of things going on.
The illegal immigrant had his first hearing in court this morning,
denied bond, and we'll get into some other things when
we come back, because there's some things that I have
questions about. There's a lot of misinformation and a lot

(17:17):
of speculation that I'm trying to weed through and we'll
talk about that when we returned about this this specific case.
Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen on this Monday night. Cold.
Monday night cold, just be cold all week I think

(17:39):
as well. Okay, so the stabbing that took place Friday
and started circulating and making waves, and then Friday night,
you know, really a lot more details started to come out.
The question is this had he bought a ticket to

(18:01):
be on the light rail? From what I understand, no,
and maybe I missed it, but I haven't heard complete
confirmation from that, but from what I've been told from
a few people, the answer is no. Okay. Fox News
this weekend had a reporter here in Charlotte and said

(18:24):
that the person broke into the light rail train, which
means you didn't have a ticket, Like if you're there illegally.
You can't break into a train if you got a ticket, right,
And it's not like you're jumping in the middle of
a moving train, so it has to stop, the doors

(18:44):
have to open, and you get in right. Fox News
also reported that the person had charges previous charges the
earlier today, and some of those things were circulating earlier today.

(19:05):
In the man's arraignment or first hearing where bail was
denied because gee, you think he might be a flight
risk after he's already been deported twice and came back,
you think he might be a flight risk. You think
denied bond. Thank you Arena's Law. Thank you Arena's Law.

(19:26):
I want everyone to thank Arena's Law, including local state
senators and local state representatives in Mecklinburg County who voted
against it. Thank you Arena's Law. No bond, so then
saying well, it wasn't mentioned or the District Attorney's office

(19:50):
in the hearing today said that they couldn't find previous charges,
So I don't know what the answer is. Supposedly there
are pre his charges out there. Other people have reached
out to me. District Attorney's off said in the hearing
today they couldn't find them. So I'm trying to figure
out what the reality of the situation is, and hopefully

(20:11):
by tomorrow night I will have those or actually midday
tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon I'll have this for you.
So that's why you need to follow me on Twitter
at Brett underscore Jensen or excuse me. I want to
make sure I get this right, follow me on X.
I want to give Elon a lot of credit and
give him all his just due, not that previous outlet
that was suppressing the voices of millions of people in

(20:36):
America and across the world. Millions like legit millions, not
even making that up? You too, YouTube, YouTube, Facebook, I
see you? So did he have previous charges? The other
thing that stood out to me. Someone asked me this

(20:59):
question earlier, and I don't have the answer for this,
and I hope to also have this answer for you
by tomorrow. So make sure you listen to WBT all
the day because I'll have stuff in the news reports
if I can get these answers, as well as putting
it on my x account. If he had been banned
from the light rail and cats in general, what did

(21:22):
he do to get banned? What kind of activity was
he doing? He was drinking openly alcohol on the light
rail this time, had a knife with him on the
light rail, was yelling at people on the light rail
and stabbed someone on the light rail. Who needs security?

(21:43):
We don't need security on every light rail car, do we.
I mean there's only twenty cars. Do you know how
many men that would take Oh my god, we can't
afford twenty men twenty that's it. Twenty cars for twenty hours.
That's what you got to cover, cars for twenty hours

(22:03):
for security. Let me ask you another question. What would
an older gentleman with no weapon been able to do
on that whose security to try and stop that man?
What have you been able to do? Yes, hopefully render

(22:24):
first aid. But what are you going to do? You've
got to be able to uh, you've got to be
able to subdue the person to prevent him from doing
other things. Right, So, I don't know. There's a lot
of speculation and a lot of questions. I don't know
what some of these are, and hopefully I'll have a
lot of these answers by tomorrow, hopefully by tomorrow morning,

(22:46):
to be honest with you, So again, just a lot
of weird things going on, a lot of weird things
going on that a lot of questions still remain unanswered.
Does he or does he not have a previous record?
So I don't know, we'll find doubt what did he
do to get permanently banned from the light rail? By
the way, By the way, have you ever heard and

(23:09):
I know some of you sports people out there. This
is not a sports analogy, so don't don't freak out
if you don't care about sports. But it's just an example.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this, Like, say,
somebody gets drunk and runs on the field or goes
streaking across the field, Right, football, baseball, whatever, generally doesn't

(23:30):
happen that much in basketball, but it's football, and sometimes
soccer and basketball or baseball. And they say so and
so has permanently been banned from Yankee Stadium. Dude, there's
sixty five thousand people in there. How are you going
to know whether or not someone is buying a ticket?

(23:50):
If I get banned and Lonnie buys the two tickets
and they're in his name, Oh the hell are they
gonna know if I'm there? Especially if I got my
Yankee hat pulled down? Well, how is that any different
than banning something from the light rail? How do you know?
Do you have a most wanted list? How are you
going to know whether someone who's been banned from Cats
has gotten on Cats? How are you gonna know? And

(24:15):
even if they have security, how are you going to know? Right? Like,
there's no reason to believe anyone doing security, whether they're
off duty police officers or hired by this firm. Like,
how many people have been banned from cats? Do you
think they've got a mental image of all eight hundred
people in their brain or fifty people in the brain,

(24:36):
or ten people in their brain. He's been permanently banned
from Okay, And so what's your point. I tell you what.
You can permanently ban me from the light rail right
now and it will not matter. I'll go write it tomorrow. Silly,
absolutely silly. Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen on

(25:05):
this Monday evening, as we go up until a few
more minutes here, up until seven o'clock. No tar Hill
game tonight, right because they played yesterday. Oh but we
got the coaches show. Okay, so TJ will be on
at eight o'clock, Is that right, loney? Okay, tar Hill's
played yesterday. By the way, my god, how far has
Georgetown fallen? I mean, they were one of the most

(25:25):
pre eminent teams and then just nothing good? Lord, anyway,
I'm sorry, I digress. I just like, oh my gosh,
they got a big game against Georgetown, like big game
maybe in nineteen eighty five. That was a big game.
Maybe in nineteen ninety two when Alonza Morning and to
Kevin Ba Matumba were there, Alan iverson, dude, will you

(25:47):
talk about big game named someone from Georgetown in the
last ten years please? So anyways, okay, So you've been
hearing us all day throughout the throughout on the station.
You've been hearing it all day. And before I forget,
we just want to quickly mention the Carolina Panthers are

(26:09):
tied for first place. That's all I just want to say,
just throw them out there. But you've been hearing all day,
not that the Carolina Panthers are tied for first place,
but that we are making big changes here at the station.
And it starts Thursday. It starts Thursday one o seven

(26:30):
point nine. That will be the new home for Charlotte's
News Talk one oh seven point nine FM. WBT News
starts circulating nationally within the radio world the radio publications
late last week and made the official announcement this morning

(26:53):
and put out press releases and everything else. If you
follow me on X like like you always should, if
you follow me, you would have seen me put it
out there earlier this morning. So one hundred, what does
this mean for us? What does this mean for WBT
eleven ten and ninety nine to three FM? Well going forward?

(27:18):
I don't know. I don't know why, but the CEO
didn't consult me on what to do with eleven ten am.
The station manager, Marshall Landis didn't consult with me about
what I want to do with eleven ten am. I
don't know why they didn't, but hey, they didn't. But
here's what I can tell you our station right now,

(27:41):
when sundown happens at about five thirty in the winter, right,
and especially now, I want to start outside, it's extremely difficult.
If you're in downtown Gastonia. All you hear is a
lot of crackling and going in and out and shelby
in King's Mountain and I think even places going east. Right,

(28:04):
because at night our fifty thousand watt blowtorch and it
is and the slogan was from Canada to Cuba WBT.
But that was only at night. That wasn't a daytime thing.
That was only a night thing. Right. Because ever, let
me give you a quick lesson, not that anyone cares,
but you'll utter least understand at sundown, regardless of when
the time is at sundown, because you know, it's different

(28:27):
in the summer than it is the winter. But at sundown,
all the AM stations have to turn down their wattage,
and I think it's to ten percent power. I think wattage.
So if you are a fifty thousand watt or if
you are a twenty thousand watt station at sundown, I
think you have to dial it down to two thousand watts,

(28:48):
so your coverage area gets lost small that was never
the case with WBT. That's why we're able to go
from Canada to Cuba because we had no radio signals
interrupting our signals and we are fifty thousand freaking watts,
but it was still that's why the station bought ninety
ninety three back in the nineties. It's it's a very

(29:08):
very very very very small, low power radio station out
of Chester, but it was to fill in the gaps
going east and west Gastonia, Shelby, King's Mountain, Monroe. That's
the only reason it was bought was to try and
to fill in the gaps that are AM station. You
can hear us clear as a bell in downtown New York,
and you couldn't hear us in Gastonia, like that's an

(29:29):
actual thing. Dean Smith used to recruit off of eleven
ten AM, saying, I know we're not on TV much,
but you can listen to every single game on eleven
ten AM in Charlotte because we've been the home of
the Tar Hills for sixty years. So that's literally how
he recruited was the New York There's a thing called
the New York Pipeline and it was a famous thing

(29:50):
with all these players from upstate or from New York
City and New York coming to North Carolina. Is because
they could listen to every single game on eleven ten
AM like it's being played in their but you could
not hear us in Gastonia or King's Mountain or Shelby
in other places. What this does? What O seven nine

(30:13):
blows that out of the water. We are not only
now do you get to hear this beautiful voice in
stereo and surround sound because we're no longer on you know, AM,
but we are one hundred thousand watts. We literally just
doubled our coverage area. You'll be able to hear us
one hundred thousand watts. And I could be wrong. I

(30:34):
think is the most you can have in a radius.
N FM radio station. I think one hundred thousand is
the most. You're gonna be able to hear us pretty
much all the way to Columbia, pretty much all the
way to Greensboro, pretty much all the way to Fayed,
Phil you know, all like, you're going to be able
to hear us wherever you are. If you're within an
hour's drive of Charlotte, we got you. If you're within

(30:56):
ninety minutes, we may get you. I mean, that's how
powerful this signal is. And there's no gaps. Guess what, Gastonia,
you got us now full time and all this starts Thursday.
I want to say at like twelve oh one am
Thursday morning, Right twelve oh one am Thursday morning, So

(31:19):
when you wake up Thursday morning, we are going to
be on one oh seven point nine FM. When I
was in high school and middle school or junior high
then people call it middle school now. Back then it
was junior high, seventh eight and ninth grade. Junior high school.
One O seven point nine was where John Boy and
Billy started, and it was WBCY and it was the

(31:41):
greatest thing we'd ever heard in Charlotte. And then it
went to Bob and Sherry, and I think I remember
seeing reports that Sherry was the first woman in radio
history to make a million dollars a year. Now, granted,
you know Howard Stearn's part eventually just blew that out
of the water, like she made tens of millions of dollars.

(32:05):
But Robin, this is her name, Robin Quivers. But Sherry
was the first. From everything that I've seen, Sherry was
the first one to make a million dollars a year
in America on radio. And then you had Matt and Ramona.
So there is history over the last forty years. And
now it's going to be news talk one oh seven

(32:25):
point nine FM WBT. We start there. And here's another thing.
A lot of you may not know. Ford almost tried
to stop putting AM radios in cars. I think BMW
has tried to stop. And there's been this push in Congress, oh,
don't let them stop putting AM radio in cars, and
blah blah blah blah blah. Well, every major news talk

(32:46):
station and sports talk station in the entire country has
gone FM. We have been late to this party by
at least a decade. And not only are we now
showing up, but we're busting through the door with a
one hundred thousand freaking watts. So starting Thursday one oh
seven point nine FM, it's gonna be much easier to

(33:08):
find on your radio and everywhere else. Nothing else changes,
just where you can find us, all right, everyone that's
gonna do it for us tonight. Look forward to having
you with more information about the stabbing tomorrow. My name
is Brett Jenson. You've been listening to Breaking with Brett Jenson.
