Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen!

Breaking: Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking about the latest controversy in Huntersville and the town commission’s decision to override community input on a park naming.

Jensen has an exclusive interview with Dan Boone to discuss the Huntersville Town Commission’s controversial decision to reject naming a park after fallen firefighter Jeff Hager. Boone, a former commissioner and current candidate, shares firsthand insight from the heated town hall meeting and explains why he believes Hager—who died from COVID-19 contracted while on duty—deserved the honor.

Jensen and Boone explore the apparent political motivations behind the decision, including pushback from left-leaning groups and concerns over Hager’s vaccination status and political affiliation.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
I Oh, let's go, oh, let's go oh, let's go oh,
let's go.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
News Talk eleven ten and ninety nine three WBT Brett
Jensen here with you on this Wednesday night edition of
Breaking with Brett Jensen. As we go up until seven
o'clock tonight. As always, the telephone numbers seven oh four five,
seven eleven ten. That's the exact same number for the
WBT text line, which is driven by Liberty Buick GMC.

(00:54):
And again, ladies and gentlemen, I say this every single day.
You really really need to be following me up an
ex at Brett Underscore Jensen for all the lust and
breaking news in and around the Charlotte area. And we've
got some things that we're gonna get into. I mean,
i mean, obviously there's some stuff going on this weekend
or actually Friday night with the Panthers, and there's a

(01:14):
lot of things going on. But I'm gonna start off
tonight with what happened or maybe didn't happen in Huntersville
last night. Okay, it's a big stink, and God bless Huntersville.
They never ever ever disappoint Like it's just the political

(01:37):
situation in Huntersville for at least the two years that
I've been following it, two and a half years. Is
just an utter crapstorm up there. It is unbelievable. You've
got a lot of the hardcore left, you've got the

(02:00):
hardcore right, and then overwhelmingly the white suburban moms who
go back and forth and go, well, if I vote
for Barack Obama, I can't be racist, or white suburban
moms who are the ones that donated the most to
the BLM cause, because if I give BLM ten dollars,

(02:21):
I can't be racist. So like, that's who we're dealing
with up there, the white suburban moms, and the politics
are all over the place, but on council right now
town Commission in Huntersville, you have a situation where it's

(02:43):
all democrat like and some of them are extremist like.
At least one of them might be borderline Antifa in
their beliefs. So last night the situation came up on

(03:03):
whether or not or how to name a park, a
particular park up in Huntersville, which is right there basically
at Station one, the fire department up in Huntersville, and
trying to figure out, all, right, who are we going
to name this park after who were going to dedicate

(03:25):
this park after? And they put out a list, you know,
like a, Hey, do you guys have any recommendations? Do
you have any thoughts on this on you know, who
we could name this park after, you know, asking the
community as one might want to do. And the overwhelming

(03:46):
winter in this was a name by a man by
the name of Jeff Hager. Jeff Hager served many years
with the Huntersville Fire Department. He caught COVID at the
Huntersville Fire Department station, gave it to his wife, as

(04:10):
one tended to do back in COVID, especially in the
early days when it was all extremely contagious, the early strains,
and they both died, the husband and the wife. They
had kids left behind. Okay, so the petition and all

(04:33):
that in the it had over like three hundred and
fifty likes on a post, right, Jeff Haggard's all things
totaled eight hundred and twenty five votes. By comparison, second
place got fifty seven. So the parks right there at

(04:53):
the fire station where he caught COVID and died, and
the there's this big push eight hundred and twenty five. Hey,
let's name it after him. He's the only firefighter in
Huntersville history to die on the job. Well, Brad, he
caught COVID. Did he really die on the job? Well,
he caught COVID at the fire department. It was proven.

(05:14):
They actually did a study to make sure we're because
like benefits and everything else. Yes, caught it at the
fire department. And here's the analogy that I use. If
you're at the fire station and a ladder falls on
you and you die while you're at work at the
fire station, or if you're at a fire trying to

(05:38):
put out a fire and a ladder falls on you
and you die, both are at work, right, Like am
I missing? Like, Yes, one happened in the fire department.
One that happened in the fire station, and one happened
at the fire But they're both at work. Period. If
you work for Amazon in the warehouse and of Amazon

(06:01):
box falls of you in the warehouse and you die,
or you're delivering the package for Amazon and you get
in a car wreck while delivering the package and die,
they're both on the job. One's in a warehouse, one's
out in the field, one's at the fire station, one's
out in the field. You see what I'm saying, Like
they're equally the same benefit. They're the same benefits in

(06:23):
terms of family and everything else. So you actually died
while being in the line of duty, no different than
if you are in a roof collapse and you die
ten days later at the hospital. Right, you didn't die immediately,
you die ten days later at the hospital because you're
part of a roof collapse while putting out a fire.
This man called COVID at the fire station proven actually

(06:45):
literally proven and died I don't know a week or
two later at the hospital with his wife. Well, like
I said, he got eighth and twenty five votes. Second
place got fifty seven. So the community pretty much wants
you to name the park after the only firefighter that's
died while on duty in the history of Huntersville. Now,

(07:13):
the by the way, fourth place, fourth place of the
names like that, this tells you what a runaway. This
was eight hundred and twenty five for Jeff Hagger. Fourth
place was Parky mcpark face. That is the greatest thing.

(07:38):
But that came it fourth. But but again, now I
only got four votes. But my point is Jeff was
a runaway. Leader in this eight hundred and twenty five votes. Well,
in their infinite wisdom. The town Commission last night up
in Huntersville voted to name it some of like first

(08:03):
Responders Park or whatever. And there was a lot of
heat about this because well, like some people said, well,
we should name it after all firefighters and first responders
who have died. That's called lot Like everyone dies. And
if this is the only firefighter who ever die in
the line of duty, that's different than dying at ninety

(08:26):
years old because of cancer. Like there's a difference there.
I'm not sure if people are aware of that, but
there is a difference. Apparently the telec Commission doesn't know this,
so they decided to name it something else. People are
extremely upset by this because the park is literally right

(08:48):
there at the fire station, like they're joined basically. But no,
And some of the reasons that people believe is because,
like I told you, they're all very left up there
in the town Commission in the Huntsville A group that

(09:08):
I was told is called Democrat Moms. No Liberal Moms
of North Mecklenburg. Again, we can't be racist if we
give BLM ten dollars, we can't be racist. Well, supposedly
they posted on Facebook and people have had a field
day with this. This particular group supposedly allegedly said, do

(09:36):
we really want to name a park after someone who
is a a Republican and b did not take the
vacs because he did not believe in the vaccine and
basically he died of COVID because he wouldn't get vaccinated.
And I was told that this group cast so much

(09:57):
grief that like the post went away and they sort
of went underground. But my point is then there's also
beliefs that the fire chief may have been somewhat in
on this and had already been told ahead of time
that the parks in rec Department up in Huntersville didn't

(10:20):
want it. They were going to suggest a different name.
Like it's it's a whole thing right now and people
are still living well. One of the people that spoke
at the meeting last night on behalf of Jeff Hager
is Dan Boone, who is running for town commission. He's
going to be joining us.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Next Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Just a real quick I just want to make sure
people understand the park that I'm talking about. The park
under discussion is on Macawayne's station number four, not the
station downtown. So I just want to make sure everyone
is aware of this, right, So make sure everyone is
aware of that, all right? Joining us now is Dan Boone.
You heard my interview with Dan Boone last week, and

(11:09):
he is running for Huntersville Town Commission. He served on
the commission, I believe four or five terms beforehand for
these two years you know, not serving, but he's running
for real. He's running for election on the town Commission.
And he spoke at the meeting last night. So Dan,
first of all, thanks for joining me. And second of all,
why did you feel compelled to speak on behalf of

(11:32):
naming the park about after Jeff hager Brett.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
First of all, good amy. I was on the board
when the town bought the thirty acres off from a
Cord Road, and that's a little bit too big for
a fire station. And the plan all along was to
take five acres, make a fire station and then to
make a park around the fire station for the community.
And what a better situation than the name a park

(11:57):
right next to a fire station. And I felt that
Huntersville firefighter Jeff hager naming a park is not about
tradition or tender It's about the sacrifice that he's made
for this community.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
And was it maybe one of the explanations that they
put out that well, we generally don't name things after people,
I mean, and I've seen some emails and some discussions
about that. As a former town commissioner, what are your
thoughts about that?

Speaker 4 (12:29):
Well, it's this board happened to name the street after
a country in Western Country and Western Singer about two
months ago. And I think that if somebody makes the
ultimate sacrifice, we need to change those rules and name
a park after Jeff. It's the type of thing that

(12:51):
he paid the ultimate price to save our community and
help our community.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Speak with Dan Boone who lives in Huntersville, who's running
for the Huntersville Town Commission that elect will be in November. So, Dan,
what was the what was the what was the atmosphere
like inside the you know, the town hall, the city
center last night when all this was going on, what like,
just paint take us inside and paint us a picture

(13:15):
of what was like the feeling inside the building and
was it tense? Was it not tense? Just take us
inside of it.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Well, they uh. Sitting there, you could tell the people
that Hardy made up their mind because there was no
eye contact, and you can almost kind of the votes
with the expression of the commissioners. And I just think
that there was probably dead on arrival. I think the
uh uh, the chief, he came out against it, and

(13:45):
that was probably the last straw. But the thing that
most people don't know that there was a name on
that survey that was put out by Park and rick By.
There's a guy they named Jeff Reid. And I happen
to call Jeff's daughter, who I know through Rotary Club,

(14:05):
and I said, what do you think about a part
being named after your dad? And she said, Dan, what
are you talking about. No one's talked even contacted me.
And I thought that was just a lack of communication
all around, from not trying to reach out to somebody
that's here in the community.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Yeah, that does seem odd that you're, you know, a
father like Jeff. Hager is the leading vote getter by far,
eight hundred and some votes to fifty seven votes. Clearly
the community would like this, except for maybe some liberal
moms group up there in Huntersville and North Mecklenburg that
didn't like the fact that he didn't want to take
a vaccination, and Nelson didn't like the fact that he

(14:43):
was a Republican. But I mean, but it also seems
odd that he that they wouldn't reach somehow, somebody wouldn't
reach out to the family, going hey, just so you
know your father is up for this possibility. Your father
is being named as a disibility for having a park,
and it just seems like you would reach out to
them so they wouldn't be blindsided by this.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
Absolutely, I was dissatisfied in the outcome, but that those
people voted for the I can't remember one of the
first responders, but there's many ways to honor people that
when somebody gives their life for this community, I think
that that's because above and beyond.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
Well, Dan, I really do appreciate you joining me tonight.
Like I said, it's you know, you know, I played
the interview that you and I did with the day
that you signed a run for Talent Commission. I played
that last week and discussed that last week in that
whole situation. So I really do appreciate you joining me
tonight on such short night.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
As Okay, have a great evening.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Thank you, sir. I appreciate that. All right. So that
is Dan Boone, like I said, he's running for Huntersville
Town commissioner and that election will be in November. He served.
I want to say five terms as four or five
terms as a town commissioner before what happened two years
ago when liberals because again, hey we need to help

(16:09):
out like the white suburban moms up there, they help
vote in a clean left slate with you know, the
mayor obviously Christy Clark, but then all of the town
commissioners and now a lot of people are extremely upset
in Huntersville. And here's my let me tell you this

(16:31):
real quick. I cover politics, as you know, for a living,
and I will say this when people get upset because
a city council woman is indicted under federal charges for
fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud along with their two daughters,

(16:54):
or things are going haywire up in Huntersville compared to
what you're used to, or your taxes get risen or
are going to be risen in Matthews. I have very
little sympathy for you. You're the ones that put them there.

(17:15):
You're the ones who voted for these people. And as
someone very dear to me always says, if you play
stupid games, you're going to win stupid prizes. So I
don't have any sympathy for you. Like if you are

(17:38):
the person that actually voted for these people, knowing what
their background is, and you vote for them and continue
to vote for them, and then you continue to get
ticked off by whether it's the park situation, or whether
it's naming a street after a country singer, or having
your taxes risen or raised. I should say having your

(17:59):
taxes raised. I mean, sorry, that's on you. That's on you.
No different than those who flee California because of the
disaster that is California moved to Arizona, Nevada, Texas, or
Idaho and then all of a sudden start voting Democrat again.

(18:19):
I got no, I got no sympathy for you. Actually,
it's just pure stupidity. You're fleeing something and then you're
voting for the thing that you flee from from which
you fleed, if I want to be grammatically correct, so
I don't. I don't have any sympathy for you. You know,

(18:39):
if you're unhappy with the way things are going in
Huntersville because it's gotten crazy. Left. Look in the mirror.
Look in the mirror. You don't like the fact that
your taxes are getting ready to go high in Matthews,
look in the mirror. Sorry, that's a that's that's a
you problem. Once again. You play stupid games. You're going

(19:05):
to win stupid prizes. Welcome back to Breaking with Brett
Jensen on this rainy Wednesday. It's been rainy today, Yesterday, Monday, Thursday.

(19:32):
I think it's supposed to be this way all weekend
if I'm not mistaken, not happy about that, but I
wanted to get back to the nineties. I'm telling you,
love some nineties. Love my shorts, love my flip flops.
Let's go, let's go. Okay. So I touched on it
a little bit last night, briefly about the Carolina Panthers
and how I think they're going to be doing much

(19:53):
better and everything else like that. There's and again you
know you're in preseason. Their first game is Friday night.
It's against the Cleveland Browns. Shadoor Sanders, son of Dion Sanders,
is going to be getting the start, even though he's
fourth string quarterback because the top three quarterbacks are either

(20:16):
out or have injuries, so they've got no choice but
to play Shadoor Sanders and he's going to be going
against and I like this. By the way, the preseason
games used to go like this, okay, and if you notice,
some people attribute this to the rash of injuries to
star players. Here's how the preseason games used to go. Okay,

(20:41):
it used to be the first game, the starters played
the first quarter and that's it, and then you have
the second string play the second quarter, the third string
played the third quarter, and in the fourth string play
the fourth quarter. And then after the first preseason game,
you would make cuts, and then in the second pre
season game, the starters would play the first quarter and

(21:04):
almost all of the second quarter, and then the second
to the third string because you've already cut the fourth string,
they're already working at Burger King, so you would have
them play the second half. And then the third preseason
game would be the starters would play the first two
quarters and either the like the first five minutes of

(21:25):
the third quarter, to get used to coming back out
of a game after halftime, to have the halftime routine done,
so they get into order and they know what to
expect and you know how to react. And then the
fourth preseason game they never played. That's exactly how it worked.
It was all the French players trying to make you know,

(21:46):
forty players trying to make five spots. They were the
ones that were playing in the in the last preseason game,
the fourth. So for the longest time now, teams were
and it really started with Michael Vick. I'm not mistaken.
Michael Vick I think shattered his leg in a preseason
game when he was with the Falcons, and from that

(22:07):
moment on it was like, oh, we can't risk injuries. Well,
now their bodies are used to getting hit, so the
first time they get hit is in week one of
the reason because you don't get hit during practice, you're
not allowed to hit, and when you're scrimmaging like the
Browns and the Panther scrimmage today, you're not allowed to
hit either quarterback. And so a lot of people think, oh, well,

(22:31):
this is the body not being toughened up or conditioned
to being hit on a regular basis or on a
hard basis, and so a lot of people attribute the
injuries to that, and so Dave can alice I love this.
He last year he played some of the starters, but
Bryce s Young truly needed it, like he needed every

(22:53):
rep he can get. And you know, early on last
year it was a disaster, it didn't matter. But he's
playing this first string defense Friday night. I love that.
Love that. No, they may only play one or two series,
that's fine, and then in the second or the third
preseason game you ramp it up a little bit more.

(23:13):
Maybe they'll play a quarter, a quarter and a half.
But I like the fact that Dave Canalis is playing
his starters where a lot of people are not, and
fully expect Bryce Young, maybe not tomorrow night, but maybe
in Game two or Game three, to fully get some
playing time in the preseason where so many teams don't
do that anymore. Oh, we we're not. We're not putting

(23:35):
Aaron Rodgers out there. We're not. We're not putting Joe
Burrow or Lamar Jackson or Josh and we're up putting
out there. What is if they twist a knee or
break a finger or what. So they don't do that.
But Dave Canalis has a different mentality and I really
really like that. Now, Okay, Bret, you like that wabs
of a receiver goes out and blows his knee out

(23:57):
in preseason. Well, that's just it's called playing football like that.
It's just the way it is. Major League Baseball all
their players play in spring training. Every single player plays
in spring training in Major League Baseball NBA. Every single
player plays in the preseason games in the NBA, every

(24:17):
single player. You can blow out a knee in the
preseason game. Now, I'm not saying Lebron James is playing
forty minutes in a preseason game, but he might get
fifteen to eighteen. As they say, get a run going,
lather up a sweat, you know, just to get the
juices flowing and get what it feels like. So it
just feels like Dave Canalis is doing everything right. The

(24:41):
way he handled the Bryce Young situation last year, starting
them in three games, benching him, I thought his career
as a Carolina Panther was over. Andy Dalton doesn't do
very well. They bring Bryce Young back. Is like at
that point where they got to lose, and at Bryce
Young with the bad he would not be on the
roster right now. They probably would have just cut him.

(25:01):
But then he balls out the last nine games. I
think had a top five quarterback rating in the NFL
last year of the last nine games that he played.
Dave Canal's just seems to be doing things the right way.
It's still up in the era, and whether or not
Dan Morgan's doing things the right way, we'll find out.
We'll find out whether his draft picks over the next

(25:22):
two or three years or if any of them are
panning out, or the free agents or trades or whatever.
We'll see. It's too early to judge Dan Morgan, but
Dave Canal seems to be doing things the right way.
And as I said last night, it's because of that
that for the first time since going into the twenty

(25:44):
eighteen season, that there's actual a buzz or a hope
around Panther fans in Charlotte and the surrounding areas, like
they're actually excited, Like not many think they're actually going
to go to the playoffs, but they also think that
they're going to be competitive and can win seven, eight,
maybe even nine games. I think seven should be a minimum.

(26:05):
I think eight, eight or nine should be a very
realistic target. Their divisions not exactly murderers row I mean
New Orleans, Atlanta, I mean, yeah, I know Tampa's fine
at all, but no one's accusing Tampa of being a
super Bowl contender. And like I said, the two teams
they played last year that were in the super Bowl

(26:27):
should have beat them both. Carolina this Kansas City Chiefs
right here at Bank America Stadium had them on the
ropes last second field goal because Carolina did something that
they just couldn't figure out how to win. And then
Xavier Laguette dropping that wide open pass in the last
twenty seconds in the end zone against Philadelphia at Philadelphia

(26:48):
should have beaten both of the super Bowl teams last year,
but they didn't. And like I said, first preseason game
is Friday night, and here's what I want to see
Friday night. I want to see how the first team
defense reacts to Shodhor Sanders. If you're supposedly the defense
has gotten better in theory, so if you've gotten better,

(27:11):
and you literally had the worst defense statistically speaking in
the NFL last year, so if you've gotten better, even
if you've gone from thirty two to twenty, you need
to be shutting down to Shodoor Sanders. Considering all the
stuff that's come out about him, on how bad he's looked.
So things to look at, things to look at on

(27:32):
Friday night.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
Oh my, I've been searching for something. Something never comes.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Never this Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen. A
few more minutes here on this Wednesday night, as we
go up until seven o'clock tonight. Okay, So over the
last week or so, the last two weeks, five restaurants
have closed. Okay, and Bella Chow that's an uptown Matzi

(28:10):
and South End that closed, Maddie's Diner, im Plaza Midwood
and Resident Culture Brewery in South End it also closed.
And then Essex Bar and Bistrow. Uh its closure is
coming as well. Okay, here's the thing. I grew up

(28:30):
in the restaurant business. Okay. My first job was as
a busboy. That was my first job as a busboy,
and then ultimately I became a waiter and then a
bartender a bar manager. My dad owned five Domino's pizza

(28:56):
stores in Jersey on the like on the Jersey Shore,
wild Wood Sea, Isle, Cape May. So every summer I
would go up there and deliver pizzas or make pizzas
for him, and then I ran his two store or
I ran his five stores for like almost two years

(29:17):
when I took a two year hiatus from the world
of media. And I was like thirty years old, right,
not even thirty years old, twenty seven, twenty six, twenty
seven years old. So I understand the restaurant business. I
understand everything from the lowly bus boy all the way

(29:38):
to operations manager. I get it. I understand how it works.
And for the record, I was the world's worst waiter
because I had no time for just giant a holes
sitting at the tables. This isn't any time for him.
And I think, you guys know my personality. And because

(30:01):
of that, my nickname was super Server. Oh here comes
super Server, because they knew I just could not put it.
But I was really good as a bartender. And somebody said, Brett,
do you know why you're better as a bartender as
opposed to a server. I said, I have no idea.
They said, because as a server, you have to go

(30:21):
to them. As a bartender, they have to come to you.
And if they tick you off, you can make them
wait for their drinks, or you can make their drinks light.
If they make you happy, you can make their drinks heavy.
Oh yeah, there you go. So anyways, well, let me
tell you something right now, there are some problems. If

(30:48):
you want to open up a restaurant near Uptown. That's
a you problem. Once again, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
In this case, the stupid price is foreclosure. Uptown is
a ghost town. It's dead. People don't like going uptown.

(31:11):
Why do you think all the millennials left Uptown and
had a mass access and they now all live in
South End. That's gen Z and Millennials. Like, for the
longest time, all those apartments in South End it was
called Millennial Row because that's where all the millennials move to.

(31:31):
So if you have a restaurant in Uptown, that's you.
What's the three most important things in the world of
real estate Location, location, location, same thing applies to restaurants.
You better have a damn good location for restaurants to
succeed in Charlotte because you've got more competition than you've

(31:54):
ever had. When I would live here in the nineties,
I mean I grew up here, as you guys know,
but like in the nineties, this was a horrible restaurant town.
Like it was awful and there weren't good restaurants hardly
at all. Like I remember when it was a big

(32:14):
deal that Del Frisco's came to South Park, Like that
was a big deal, Like, oh my gosh, we got
a cheesecake factory. Ooh. But now you've got so much competition.
You better picked the right location and you better offer
something that nobody else can offer. But you can't be
too gimmicky. It's difficult now, it's very, very difficult. And

(32:41):
a lot of these old Mama Pop restaurants that have
been around for thirty or forty years, why are they
selling because their land is so valuable prices Chicken Coop,
they sold it because of the land. Millions upon millions
upon millions is what they got paid. Whether it's mister

(33:03):
Ky's or whatever, or what's gonna happen in brooks burgers,
it's all about the land. So you better have a
prime location. And I got news for you. It ain't uptown.

(33:24):
It's not uptown at all. And you know, like South Park,
South Charlotte, maybe parts of South End, but South End
is all foot traffic, which can be good, which means
people don't leave their bubble very much. They stay in there.
A little couple of blocks because there's nowhere to park
in South End, so the only people you're getting are
the people that live in South End for the most part.

(33:47):
Plaza Midwood it's a younger crowd. Noda that's an eclectic crowd,
Like are they spending much money in Noda? Plaza Midwood
it's more of a bar hangout. So again, do your research. People,
Just because it's in a neighborhood doesn't mean it's going

(34:08):
to succeed. What type of people are going there, what
type of people are eating there, how much money are
they going to spend? So you got to figure out,
all right, everyone that's going to do it for us?
Tonight again thanks to Dan Boone up in Huntersville who's
running for town Commission to talk about the situation going
on in Huntersville and the not naming of a park
after a fallen firefighter from the very liberal and far

(34:31):
left town Commission up there. My name is Brett Jensen,
and you've been listening to Breaking with Brett Jenson
