Speaker 1 (00:00):
News Talk eleven ten and ninety nine three WBT. Brett
Jenson here with you on this Friday night edition of
Breaking with Brett Jenson.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Seven oh four five seven h eleven ten. As always,
that is.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
The telephone number to call into the show, and that
is also the WBT text line, which is driven of
course by Liberty Buick GMC and guys, you really should
be following me on except Brett Underscore Jensen for all
the latest of breaking news in and around the Charlotte area.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
And I tell you that every single day because it's true.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Okay, So we've got a lot of things that we're
going to get into tonight, and also the Carolina Panthers
Game one this weekend against Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's a game that they could actually win. We'll see.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
I'm not holding my breath, but it's a game that
they could actually win. And there's a lot of great
games in the NFL this weekend. A great game last night,
a great game tonight, and then we've got a lot
of games this weekend, including obviously college on Saturday, and
what's gonna happen with the UNC and the UNCC game.
Can you and CC keep it close? Like That's that's
(01:02):
the million dollar question. Can they keep it close? Because
we know how bad Carolina looked over the last week.
I guess what Monday night, the entire nation saw that
ultra embarrassment. The entire country laughed at your head coach,
the entire country. That's all sports people talked about Tuesday
(01:22):
and Wednesday, That's all they talked about was just how
awful awful the North Carolina tar Hills looked.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
And what a pathetic.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
I guess what's the term I'm looking for, like a
pathetic existence of Bill Belichick that he is right now
to look at him as pathetic? What has he done
since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
How about not have a winning season, get fired from
the New England Patriots, come out and have the biggest
blowout laws of his entire career in his very first
game at the college level. Oh and then make a
fool of himself with his twenty four year old girlfriend. Yeah,
how's that working out for your ten million dollars a
year that the North Carolina Athletic Department is paying him.
(02:10):
Hubert Davis supposed to be sitting back going really at
least I took off my team to the national championship game.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, I haven't done.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Much in the last too a couple of years, but
at least I'm not getting blown out like that, and
at least.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
I did go to the national championship game.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yes, I had the biggest choke in the history of
the NCAA Championship Championship game. Truly, that's an actual statement,
the biggest choke in the history of college basketball's championship game.
That was the North count of Tar Hills under Hubert
Davis a couple of years ago. But all that being said, great, Look,
(02:43):
college football is awesome. I love college football like I
always go back and forth. If I like college football more,
I like watching NFL more on TV. But I like
going to college football games more in person, the pageantry
and everything else. Granted, there hasn't been pageantry at North
Carolina since nineteen eighty one eight nineteen eighty nineteen eighty
(03:06):
last time.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I think they won the ACC Championship.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Forty five years ago, So congratulations to the Tar Hills
for having the forty fifth anniversary since the last time
they won the A SEC championship.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Congratulations.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
It sure is not only going to be this year,
and this is a league that is actually really really bad,
and you've got no chance of winning this year. But anyways,
I digress, I digress, I'll get off the soapbox and
just how awful the Tar Hills are and what a
joke Bill Belichick is, at least to this point, because
I don't see things getting better. All right, let's get
(03:41):
the show start. Let's let's just do that. Let's get
the show started. Okay. So I ran into christopherccary, and look,
you've got Saturday, Tomorrow is the last.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Day of early voting.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I believe it goes up until three pm if I'm
not mistaken, and then no voting on Sunday, no voting
on Monday, and then you've got the election day on Tuesday.
So I caught up with christopherccari, who is the only
Republican with a primary running against Sari Chakra and for
District six City Council, the seat vacated by her husband Tark,
(04:14):
who went to DC.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
I think he vacated the seat back in April.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
So anyways, I caught up with her and I just
asked her like two or three quick questions about how
the campaign's going as she looks to she's trying to
win the primary so then they can go on to
November and running the general election. But she's also got
to beat the challenge at first, Sherry Chakra. So I
wanted to, like I said, I just wanted to talk
to christ to say, hey, how are things going. And
(04:40):
here's what she had to say. All right, Christmas, you've
got about two more days of early voting and then
you've got the full day on election day on Tuesday.
How has this primary been going, how's the campaign been going?
Speaker 3 (04:52):
I mean, I think it's been great. I think we've
gotten out the message that I have the experience, I
have the knowledge, and I am ready to hit the
ground running for the district. My priorities are aligned with
the district's priorities, and you know, talking out here with
the voters, I feel like very positive about what's going
(05:15):
to happen on election day.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
When you talk to the voters.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Obviously with what happened with the refugee from Ukraine getting
stabbed on the light rail by someone who did not
have a ticket. When you talk to them, how much
is safety a concern for them, especially whether it's public
transit or just walking down the street.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah. I mean, we have a huge juvenile crime issue
here in Charlotte and we have got to stop putting
a band aid on it. We have to start taking
it head on. If we do not put a juvenile
detention center in Charlotte, we are going to continue to
see these crimes. They are going to continue to happen,
and they're actually going to get worse. We have to
(05:53):
have a leader who is going to go to Raleigh
advocate for the money to open up that juvenile detention
center and make sure that we are getting these kids
off of our streets and rehabilitated to understand there is
another life for them.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
All right, So a couple more days so I will
be back out here on Tuesday to see you on
election Day.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
So any last things you want to say, Yes, I.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Just need the Republicans to come out and vote. I
am a trusted leader within the Republican Party. I have
been backing Republican candidates for over twenty years, and I
need you guys to show up for me in this
primary and on election day because, believe me, the Democrats
are coming after this seat and we are not giving
(06:36):
it up.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I don't know what's going to happen in that particular race.
I have no clue.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
A lot of people think that Chris is going to win,
but then I hear from a lot of people you
know that Sari is really really trying and door knocking
and you know at the polls.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
So I honestly don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
I mean, obviously Christ's got the name, obviously because of
her husband, and you know she's out there's you know
she's working as well, but everyone's talking about how har
Sari Chakra's working. That doesn't necessarily mean anything. But if
you don't have any money, that's.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
What you have to do.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
You have to work hard, and so we'll see which
one pays off. I have no idea what's going to happen.
I truly have no clue what's going to happen. But
I can tell you, like I wouldn't even be able
to tell you who has the advantage, like going into it,
obviously I thought Krista had the advantage, and most Republicans
still think that she has the advantage just because of
the name recognition and people know who she is and
(07:29):
the financial backing and support of a lot of people.
But I don't know, well, like I said, I don't
count anything for certain in local.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Politics, especially at the local levels.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Now, there are a lot of things that you can
judge when you're talking about national races and stuff like that.
Like I knew, and I kept telling everyone that I
knew Trump was going to win on election night and
there was a chance he would take minimum six of
the seven swing states and possibly all seven just because
of the numbers and the data and everything else.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
And it was one hund percent correct.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
With local elections, there is no telling, no telling at
all what can happen because it all depends on voter turnout,
which obviously has been extremely low, extremely low. So I
don't know, like maybe three thousand Republicans, ten five thousand,
eight thousand Republicans will vote. That's not a lot to
be voting in that particular primary. And that's where one
(08:23):
vote equals about ten votes or fifteen votes because so
few people are actually voting. So again, I will be
out there all day Tuesday, you know, going.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
To different places.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Obviously we're going to be covering the mayoral race and
the city council at large races District three with Lana
Mayfield and Joy Mayo and obviously the District six on
the Republican side with Christopherccory and Sari Chakra.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So we got all that coming for.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
You on Tuesday, So make sure you stick around on
Tuesday because I'll be doing an election special on my
show Tuesday night.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
All right, when we come back, let's.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Get into a couple of other things, and don't forget
the Panthers are playing this weekend, and we'll get into
the Panthers arn as well. My name is Brett Jensen.
You're listening to Breaking with Brett Jenson. Now let's sing
on over to the WBT Traffic Center with Metro Mike
doan Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen on this
beautiful Friday night. Okay, So the light Rail, the video
(09:18):
the stabbing, It was released today by Cats, and I
will tell you that, you know, I have been telling
people that, look, I would be a little surprised if
they released it, and if they did release it, things
would probably be blurred out or whatever, you know, But
and then most media members probably wouldn't show it. So
(09:40):
Queen City News did a report on it, and Robin Kennedy,
she talked about people on she talked to people on the.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Light rail and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
So i want you to hear her report, and then
I'm going to talk about it when we return where
I should say when the report's over, because there are
a couple of things that I'm like, okay, like yes
and no, yes and no, but we'll talk about But
I do want you to hear this report first, because
she did a really good job of talking to people
on the light rail, and so we'll talk about that
(10:07):
when after this report Today.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Before following breaking news out of Charlotte, Cat's officials have
release surveillance video of the deadly stabbing on a light
rail in South End. The recent random attack has renewed
security concerns on public transit in the Charlotte area, and
because the video is so disturbing and violent, we're choosing
not to show it in its entirety. Queen City News
anchor Robin Kennedy joining us here in the studio to
(10:31):
give us more on this breaking development.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
Robin, Right, Alicia, And the part of the video that
we are showing you is just incredibly hard to watch.
We do want to give you just a moment to
look away if you think you might need to, before
we show this video, and we are choosing to air
part of the video so that people can understand how
random this attack was and how it just could have
(10:53):
been anyone on that light rail. The suspect, de Carlos
Brown is already on the light rail when the victim,
Arena Zarutska, gets on on Friday, August twenty second, right
around ten pm. Brown sits behind her for about four
and a half minutes. He doesn't seem to look in
her direction at all, doesn't even seem to notice she's there,
(11:16):
until suddenly, out of nowhere, he pulls out a knife.
Zarutzka has no idea what's coming. The suspect quickly stabs
her three times and then just walks off as if
nothing happened, leaving her to die. So sad and Brown
changes clothes and runs off the light rail at the
(11:37):
very next step. Now, Brown is in jail, charged with murder,
and he's being held without bond. Since that deadly stabbing
two weeks ago, city leaders have called for extra security
on the light rail, and we wanted to know how
riders are feeling and whether security officers are becoming more
high profile. Light rail riders have mixed opinions on whether
(12:03):
they've noticed more security on the light rail since the stabbing.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
When it happened, of course, I'm very disturbed, and I
was like, I don't know if I still want to save.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
The light rail. I have not noticed a change in security,
either an increase or in the Hockt've seen more absent.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
I have noticed like an increase in security, but only
at specific times, like more so during the morning when
I'm keeting to work.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
We rode the light rail Friday around noon, starting at
the East West station near where the stabbing happened, and
went round trip for about twenty stops. We did not
see a single security officer.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
I do think they need to step up some of
our measures. I don't know what that looks like.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
Charlotte Area Transit says they are thirty five officers short
staffed right now and working to hire the full two
hundred and nineteen they have allotted through their contract with
a private security firm. Did you with your security knowing
that really you haven't seen any changes since the stabbing?
Speaker 6 (13:05):
Very much?
Speaker 5 (13:06):
So tell me more about that.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
It makes me hesitant to take the light rail at
a certain time. So I know that my friends and
I have pretty firm ideas on what we will and
won't take it.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
So today I asked cat's officials why we didn't see
any security officers and they tell me CAT security is
spread out across the transit system and they're not stationed
at every light rail train station or on board every bus.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
One of the things that I had an issue with,
or I don't say an issue, but I was just like, okay,
I kind of rolled my eyes a little bit. Was
I understand why Queen City News did not show the
actual stabbing.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Totally get it.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
It was extremely gruesome and extremely bloody, and they didn't
show the actual stabbing or the blood coming out, and
Queen City News blurred out the faces of the people
on the light rail minus the murder suspect. What I
don't understand is when they were like, hey, you might
want to look away.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
This is gruesome, this is tough to watch. They literally
didn't show any of the stabbing.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
They show the guy stand up, raising his arm, and
then the next thing they show is him changing his clothes.
There was literally nothing difficult or tough to watch. So
I encourage you to go and look at the Queen
City News report. But there was what they showed in
the video. There was literally nothing disturbing or troubling about
the video because they stopped the video right when he
(14:39):
was like raising his arm back to stab, like when
he stood up and moved direct sideways, and they keep
saying behind not I mean like they were talking about
I had heard that, Like he was sitting behind her.
They were sitting side by side, maybe at a slight
angle behind her, but he was sitting across the aisle,
not directly behind her. He was sitting across the aisle
from her, maybe if you know, a few inches or
(15:01):
so or football or so behind, but he was sitting
directly beside her, across the aisle. He reaches into his
right pocket, pulls out the knife, unfolds it, stands up,
and raars way back with his right hand. And when
he raars way back with his right hand, she's just
(15:21):
at that exact moment you can see through the blurry
image that she turns to her left with her head
turns to her and starts turning to her left to
see what the guy's doing. And that's when Queen City
News stops the video. So I promise you you don't
see any blood. You don't see any violent attack. You
just see him standing. So I'm not sure what they're
saying it's difficult to watch because there was literally nothing
(15:43):
difficult to watch. It's a guy standing and raising his
arm and everything else is blurred out, and then they stop.
They don't see the attack, you don't see the blood,
and then you see him changing his clothes.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
There are people on the light rail.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
There are quite a few people on the light rail,
and that's a very disturbing part, very disturbing part.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Hopefully you know, people on the light rail.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Obviously called nine to one one and all that, but
that's very disturbing that there were many people there were
there were quite a few people. Again, it was Friday
night at about nine forty five at night. There are
quite a few people on the light rail. And then
he gets off and obviously they you know, they called
nine to one one, told him what the suspect was
wearing and all that, and then he was arrested just
almost immediately afterwards.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
But go check it out. Like I said, great report.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
I don't know why they said it's difficult to watch
because they literally didn't show anything.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
So but that's what I thought the media would do.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
They wouldn't show the blood or the actual violent crime itself,
And honestly, there's no reason to watch it to see
a beautiful, poor young girl get stabbed to death by
a psychotic animal. So anyways, when we come back, let's
get into a few other things. But right now, let's
sing on over to the wt newsroom with Anna Erickson.
Welcome back to Breaking with Brett Jensen on this Friday night. Okay,
(16:53):
so I want to be a little lighthearted going forward
through the rest of the show because it is a Friday,
and we've talked to politics, and we've talked to news
with the cats situation and the stabbing and politics and
all again, all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Let's go a little lighthearted here. You know.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
We'll end the show with the Carolina Panthers, gonna look
into this weekend's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the
other day, I guess it was Let's Sday Friday, so
I guess it was Wednesday night.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Wednesday night, you know. Edwin Peacock and I.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
After the show, we're talking, and we weren't talking politics,
we weren't talking news. We were actually talking eighties and
nineties music and concerts and stuff. Like that, right, And
then we you know, we were talking about the Pterodactyl
Club and how I used to go there every Thursday
night because every Thursday night was college night. This is
ninety two, ninety three, ninety four, ninety five, ninety six, Like,
(17:46):
I love the Pterodactyl Club. As a matter of fact,
it's just right down the street from where I am
talking to you right now. It's right there at the
corner of Morehead and Freedom. That's where it was at
and directly almost directly across this from Pinkies. And loved it,
loved that place. And we were talking about like what
groups we'd seen there and stuff like that. And we
(18:08):
were talking about this group this like back in the day,
this alternative group in the nineties and early two thousands
called depeche Mode. And they're a big, big group obviously,
big international group, and they're a little bit more of
an alternative They would top forty radio, but they're also
a little bit alternative goth looking, if you will, but
it's not like heavy metal music or anything like that.
(18:29):
And we were talking said, yeah, I saw depeche Mode.
I said, you won't believe where I actually saw depeche Mode.
I said, it was about like ninety three, nineteen ninety three,
maybe ninety four ninety three. I saw them at the
Carowins Palladium. It was a sold out show, and that
was it. That was your outdoor arena, the Carowins Palladium.
(18:50):
And you would go to Carowins and you would show
your ticket that you were going to the concert and
they would let you through the gates.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
But it was a special gate to only go to
the pladium.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
And I said, yeah, oddly enough, I said, that's the
place where I saw Weird Al Yankovic and Depeche Mode,
of all people, weird. I was a junior in high
school when I saw Weird Al Yankovic, you know, beat
it and like a Surgeon and all the stuff that
you know, all the parody songs that he sang. And
we're talking about how different Charlotte is then compared to
(19:23):
what it is now. And just in the thirty years
I was changed because now you've got the big outdoor amphitheater,
which is a disaster.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Trying to get in and out of.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
They don't have enough parking spaces for the number of
tickets they sell.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
It is an absolute crap show. Thanks Life Nation. Thanks.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
And then you've got the Amphitheater by the Music Factory,
which is really cool and very intimate, but once again,
it's extremely difficult trying to get in and out because
there's only one road, two lanes to get in and
get out. And things didn't go well, Like I want
to go see the Goo Goo dolls there. I don't know,
month and a half, a couple months ago, whatever it
was month and a half ago that was.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I was like, it took me an hour. It took
me an hour.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Just to get out of the parking deck and I'm
not even exaggerating, and I was about to lose my mind.
So anyways, but the two outdoor Amphitheaters, they're great if
you could actually get in and get out in there,
if they had actual parking. But then you know, you
got obviously the Spectrum Center, and but back then all
you had was the Palladium and a couple of big
(20:25):
indoor music venues. When I say big, I mean maybe
a whole in one thousand people or something like that,
two thousand max. And then you had the Shawn Coliseum
right there on Taivola, which is now just apartments, and
you know, because they blew it up and they built
the Spectrum Center uptown. But yeah, weird Al Yankovic and
Depeche Mode and by the way, and as I always
(20:47):
like to say, and I actually looked it up and
they actually had it, and I think I was seven
years old. I think I was seven, and I saw
my very first concert, odd oddly enough at the Karen
Wentz Palladium and I was seven years old and it
was Chris Christopherson and Rita Coolidge and I googled it
(21:08):
and it actually showed the date that they were at
the Karen Wentz Palladium, and I just remember going on.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I don't know if it was a Friday or Saturday,
but it was a.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Weekend night and not a weekday night, but a weekend night,
and just going there thinking, oh, and obviously having no
clue who either one of them are having no clue. Actually,
I canna be honest with you now, I don't know
hardly any songs that they're say.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Now I know.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Chris Christofferson was part of the Highwaymen and did a
lot of acting, and it was right when he did
the movie with the Stars Born with Barbara streisand Rita Coolidge,
I'm sure maybe there's one or two songs that I've heard,
but I can't name anything off the top of my head.
But my best friend's parents wanted to go because they
loved the movie is Starsborn, and they wanted to see
Chris Christopherson. Chris Christopherson, who just died I want to
(21:54):
say within the last year, or maybe even within the
last six months or something like that.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
But anyways, it's the Cara Wins Palladium.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
And then I was excited when they decided that they're
announce that they were going to open it back up
and start having concerts there again, and I just, I
don't know, it just brings back a lot of memories
that they were having those.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Type of shows again.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
So yeah, saw depeche Mode, Weird Al Yankovic and Chris
Christofferson and Rita Coolidge. Those are the three shows that
I've seen, and they were damn near ten years apart
each time. They were almost ten years apart when I
was seven, and then I was like sixteen, and then
(22:39):
I was twenty.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Six somewhere in there.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
When I was twenty five when I saw depeche Mode,
And that's the last concert that I've seen at the
Krawin's Palladium.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
So I think.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I'd kind of like to go back just for, you know,
to reminisce and go, oh yeah, I remember when this
was here and that was there was here, and I
want to see how different it is now.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
But I do like the fact that they're having shows
there again.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
And also this coincides with Cara Wins announcing you know, hey,
there's Scare Wins. It's getting ready to happen again, and
so that's always a good time. Although I will tell
you I loved Carowins as a kid. Loved it the
thunder Road and White Lightning and even the Scooby Doo
rides and the gold Rush roller coaster and all that
(23:26):
the oaken bucket where it's spin around and the floor
would drop but the gravity and would force you against
the wall like stuff like that. Loved all that stuff,
and then obviously the newer rides. But I haven't spent
a day at Carewinds in gosh, a full day at
Carawins since the late two thousands, like maybe two thousand
(23:47):
and seven might be the last time I spent a
full day at Carowins, like actually trying to go and
ride the rides, so I actually wouldn't mind going there.
I know they're talking about opening up or I saw
you the other day on a roller Coast YouTube channel
talk about going down rabbit holes and they're talking about
like the biggest, baddest roller coaster in the history of
the planet is getting ready to be built at Caroin.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
So we'll see if that happens. And I'm sure they'll
do a press thing. But I actually need to get
back by there, I really do.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
All right, when we come back, let's get into the
Carolina Panthers. NFL starts this weekend, including Panthers versus Jacksonville.
But right now, let's sing on over to the WBT
Traffic Center with Mike Dome. Welcome back to Breaking with
Brett Jensen for a few more minutes as we go
up until seven o'clock tonight. All right, it is Carolina
Panthers weekend. The tar Hills are playing at UNCC this weekend.
(24:37):
God knows what's gonna happen there. You would think the
tar Hills would win just because they're supposed to win,
but I mean, after what they did last week, who
the hell knows. But the Carolina Panthers are playing the
Jacksonville Jaguars, the two expansion teams that came in together,
what nineteen ninety six, So we'll see what nineteen ninety five,
I guess, So we'll see what happens there.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
So there's a real chance that they could win.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Dave Canawis met with the media to talk about preparations
leading up to Jacksonville well as well as the Jacksonville
quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 7 (25:03):
Just three three great days on the field, great practice
and preparation by this group, and excited really to just
get out there and play a game, which they all are.
You know, I can tell they're just kind of chomping
at the bit to get back to football here. So
but again, it's about our process. It's about just taking
these days, each one of them. Every rep counts, every
rep is so important. You know, we create us on
that practice field. And the guy's heard that message loud
(25:25):
and clear, and you know, gave great effort this week.
Speaker 8 (25:27):
Yeah, she didn't see enough from Icky to feel confident
that he'll be playing.
Speaker 7 (25:32):
Yeah, I mean, we're gonna have to just keep taking
it day by day, right, really, and we got him
out there to do some stuff and you know, just
the you know with you know, just how short of
a window we had. You know, we really just like
every day he takes leaps, every day he he does
a little bit more, and it's just like we got
to just kind of go all the way. You know,
he's doubtful right now. We just got to take it
all the way to the game.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
He's saying, they'll stiff.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
I mean, does he feel physically one hundred percenters?
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Yeah, We'll take it all the way to the game.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
I did. Who would fill in for him if he's
not able to go.
Speaker 7 (26:01):
Well, Josh and Brady have been taking the reps, so
we're gonna go with one of those two guys.
Speaker 9 (26:04):
Matthis injured himself Wednesday. Is that something that could be
a long term major injury or you kind of.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
Just week to week?
Speaker 7 (26:11):
My good to just so so unfortunately, Damari tore his
a c L in the practice, and so you know,
we're he's here right now and it's getting some preliminary
rehab and he'll be traveling to uh to get operated on,
and we'll be a part of his recovery process. I
was really excited about having him here. You know, a
guy that really brings a couple of things. A big,
strong corner you know, with with great physical ability, you know,
(26:33):
look really good moving around with that size and uh
and also just his ability to play on special teams.
So I was really excited to kind of bring him
along and see where he fit in our schemes.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
You know.
Speaker 7 (26:43):
So you know, my heart goes out with tomorrow for sure,
you know, especially this this quickly kind of you know,
changing scenery coming over from Denver, and then you know,
to get here and to have that injury just really
unfortunate for him.
Speaker 9 (26:54):
They talked about on the broadcast last night from Chris
collins or perspective about how in week one you're typically
more exhausted than you would be because you didn't have
the reps and stuff like that. From a sports science standpoint,
how have you gone about working with the new training
staff and making sure like everybody is getting kind of
their workloads kind of managed in that first.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
Yeah, Josh Tinks, Denny Kellington, working together with them, myself,
Jeff Brown, with our rep counts and really just trying
to mimic the work that it takes to get a
full week of football, you know, throughout camp and those
days that oscillate with those players day off and trying
to accumulate those amount of reps, you know, so that
(27:34):
we can handle that load. And you know, we were
fortunate to be able to have a full group to
do it with, you know. And and I think it's
just a lot of the a lot of the body
preparation going into practices and then the recovery and strength
stuff that was happening afterwards, and you know, the confidence
that I can go up there and say, guys, give
everything you have in practice, don't hold anything back. We'll
(27:54):
take care of you. You know, we'll monitor those things.
If we have to modify days, we will, you know,
and just kind of working individual plans for each player
and just being able to keep that on our radar.
But I think the freeing part for me as the
head coaches, I get to just push them, you know,
and and I can throw hard practices at them, and
as we continue to build throughout camp and seeing some
good joint practices those days, you know, we were able
(28:17):
to you know, get really high volume in the Houston week.
Then we were able to come back and the week
of Pittsburgh week to really get another full day with
just us. But to kind of mimic that type of
day with the move the ball periods and you know,
finishing and all that. So I feel great about the
conditioning of this group. But again, like you know, like
was mentioned, you know, when you get to regular season
and those guys are all playing full speed, you know,
(28:38):
there's another level.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Of speed that these guys go to, which.
Speaker 7 (28:41):
We asked them to try to tap into, but just
the nature of it, you know, and the adrenaline gets
going and all that. So that's an adjustment. But that's
an external factor that our guys are you know, accustomed
to dealing with and kind of you know, evolving from there.
Speaker 8 (28:53):
I was just good. We don't know that we've asked
too much, if at all this week about Trevor Lawrence
and what, Yeah, did you study him much when he
was coming out and watched any background or thoughts about
what he presents.
Speaker 7 (29:06):
Yeah, he's a winner, you know, a fantastic athlete. And
I think that I've watched him just continue to grow.
He's had a bunch of different systems kind of thrown
at him, and even throughout all of that, you know,
he's found a way to play consistent football. And I
think you know, on any given play, like you see
some special throws, and he had a lot of success
with Brian Thomas last year, you know, and they added
(29:26):
a couple more pieces. So, you know, this is a
guy that I have a lot of respect for, not
just the player, but also just the way that he
carries himself, the way that he continues to lead through
some you know, pretty difficult times, you know. So that
speaks to his character, and you know, I think that
Liam's got to be really excited that he has that
guy as a you know, a focal point of starting
this program.
Speaker 10 (29:45):
Dave, there's an interesting symmetry with you and Liam Cohen
obviously both offensive coordinators with Tampa Bay and then get
first head coaching job. What do you know about Do
you have a personal connection with him, what did you
see from him last year as a play caller in
Tampa Bay, and just your general thoughts of him going
into his first game.
Speaker 7 (30:07):
I've had a couple of connections with him over the years.
I would say probably for about the past five years,
going back to when he was at Kentucky will Levis
was there, he was doing some great things schematically. He
kind of had this cool combination of the pro game
in the college game, being able to use the rules
of the college game to his advantage. And then you know,
I saw him translate, you know, as he he went
(30:28):
back to the Rams, but then when he when he
took over in Tampa, I saw him really translate the
marriage of a couple of systems, the run variety, the
creative screens, the creative deceptive passes and different things, and
and just at the core of it, like really good
fundamental football, you know. So I got a lot of
respect for Liam, and you know, I've really kind of
(30:48):
just enjoyed, you know, like sitting last year and just
watching you know, the stuff that he was doing in Tampa,
you know, and kind of watching knowing those players, knowing Baker,
you know, knowing those guys, and seeing like, you know,
the possibilities of what what you could do. So it's
been really cool, I think, you know, for us as
offensive coaches, we all kind of look at each other's
offenses and see if there's something that they're doing within
(31:10):
a scheme that we might be able to incorporate, you know.
So he's one of those guys that I just I
love watching what they do and and really just challenging
each other. Like I think that's how we grow this game.
I think I take a lot of responsibility, you know,
as a young head coach and really a new offensive
coordinator going into my third years of calling plays, I
take a lot of responsiy responsibility in growing this game,
(31:33):
making this an exciting football, a brand of football, you know,
for fans for a long time. It's our charge to
continue to advance it, you know, but to never lose
the essence of the toughness and physicality that it takes
to play this game. But really just being able to, like,
you know, take what the colleges are doing and say, look,
these guys have been doing these plays for a long time.
How can we incorporate some of those things into what
(31:54):
we're doing. So I think Liam's one of those guys
as well. How can we advance this game and make
it a great product for all of our fans?
Speaker 2 (32:01):
All right, everyone that's going to do it for us tonight.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
