Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, welcome back to Carolina Focus. You're listening to Carolina
Focus on News Talk eleven ten, ninety nine to three,
WBT Mix Monos seven nine in Sports Radio ninety two
to seven WFNZ, our public affairs show, Carolina Focus. And
Hey Charlotte, you know it's time for the sixth annual
WBT Little Heroes Blood Drive. Yes, on Thursday, This Thursday,
(00:22):
September fourth, WBT and the one Blood, Big Red Bus.
You've seen those around. We'll be at the Doghouse in
Uptown Charlotte from ten in the morning till three in
the afternoon. We'll be broadcasting live and encouraging you to
make a life saving blood donation. It's the sixth annual
WBT Little Heroes Blood Drive Thursday, September fourth at the
(00:43):
dog House at the dog House in Uptown Charlotte. All right,
let's continue our discussion on the Renaissance Festival with their
director of marketing, Take it away Sharon right here on
Carolina Focus.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
So do they actually own that property as avay? Does
that sit there a year round with all of the
buildings and stuff that we see on there when you
come out there other the weekends. Are those there permanently.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
So yes, the festival is owned by Jeffrey and a
separate investment group. The land is and therefore the festival
activity is the primary activity that happens on that property,
with the exception in the off season and for about
six or seven months leading up to when the festival
(01:27):
utilizes the property at its peak operation.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
The property is also used for farming.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Okay, okay, So why do you think I mean, thirty
two years, that's an incredible number. Why do you think
that the festival is so popular? Why is it really
hit home especially with people in the in the Charlotte area,
you know, you know, they're popular all around the country,
and in recent years it really started surging in popularity.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
And I think the core Renaissance festivals are about escapism.
It's about little forgetting about your modern day cares and
feeling as if you can just time travel for a
day to a more simple time and place and let
the burdens of modern life just kind of fade away.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
And it's about spending a great time with people you love.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Because you get the room through this beautiful wooded setting
in the fall, when the leaves are tune to colors,
and whether it's family. You can have a great family experience,
or if you're coming with on a date, you can
have a really cool romantic date experience.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
It's really truly true.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
You get to choose your own adventure because the entertainments
that we offer are for all ages, and when you
flip through the event program that's handed to you when
you walk through the gates, there's a rating system. So
there's a lot of shows that are child or friendly.
There's a lot of shows that are like PG. Thirteen,
and there's entertainment even at the end of the day
(02:56):
that is more adult in nature. So you know, you
can come with your buddies and have a beer and
have a cool comedy nightclub type experience where you can
bring out the kids and have a Disney like experience.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
There's something really at the Renaissance Festival.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Something for everyone. Now, if you're one of the folks
out there listening to this and are interested in one
of these three hundred positions still available, I mean this
gives the employees of the festival. I mean they get
a front row seat to all of this entertainment. I mean,
what a cool job experience to have, and instead of
being in a nine to five desk kind of thing.
You're out there at the Renaissance Festival, being front and
(03:34):
center with all of this activity.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Very much though, and equally as important to creating the
overall magic of the experience. Everybody is important, All rules
are important, and the folks that are, you know, selling
turkey legs and steak on the steak and pouring and
pouring ale are adding to the overall ambiance and experience
(03:58):
just as important as the knights on horse back, you know,
battling each other three times daily.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
You mentioned that the turkey legs. Any other new food
items or drinks that people should be on the lookout
for this year.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Oh, I know.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Our food and beverage director is working on something. He
just hasn't given me those updates yet. But every year
they're adding adding some great new menu item. We really
take a lot of pride in our food and beverage program.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
We operate that folding in the house, which a lot
of venues do not do.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
That gives us a lot of control and to come
up with some really great, high quality stuff and it
really is quite the endeavor. You know, the items that
we are selling from the Giant Roast turculates to know
the bread bowls that are fresh baked daily, and the
stews and.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
So on and so forth. It's it's high quality stuff.
It's great. You can really feast like royalty when you
come to the rest.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Absolutely. Now, let's go over the details again with the
job festival. That is Saturday, September sixth, from ten am
to two pm.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yes, and details are at renfestinfo dot com. It's at
the Renaissance Festival property in Huntersville, which is equal distance
from I seventy seven and I eighty five.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Okay, and the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Give us the dates
once again. When when things get started, and how how
long it.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Runs Saturdays and Sundays October fourth through November twenty three,
eight consecutive weekends right up to Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
And now what time does do the gates open and close?
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Gates open at nine thirty.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
We encourage you to arrive early so that you're parked
and ready for the gates to swing open, and then
we close up five thirty in the evening.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Awesome, all right, lots of fun coming up at the
Carolina Renaissance Festival. Matt, thank you so much for joining
us today. And giving us all these details.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Thank you, have a great rest of your morning.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
We've been speaking with Matt Siegel. He is the director
of Marketing and Entertainment for the Carolina Renaissance Festival, which,
as you just heard him said, runs October fourth through
November twenty third, weekends Saturday and Sundays from nine thirty
two five thirty. You can get all the information at
renfestinfo dot com about the festival itself and also about
the job fair that is coming up on the sixth
(06:21):
of September from ten am to two pm. Everybody, stay
with us. We've got a lot more coming up here
on Carolina Focus.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
All right, let's move to another fun topic, the Carolina Panthers.
This past week they cut their roster down. They also
traded Adam Thielen back to his hometown of Minnesota to
the Minnesota Vikings. Let's pick up the press conference with
head coach Dave Canalis as he talks that move and
all the rest of the moves as we get ready
(06:54):
for the regular season right here on Carolina Focus.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
You know, it just happened to work out this way
and kind of kind of a transaction that happened where
everybody you know, we met in a common ground, you know,
all across the board, and so you know, it just
happened to work out this way. And he and I
had a long conversation today where you know, it's just
like it's about patience and it's about the right thing
being done, you know. And and I think we come
(07:18):
away with this and all of us the vikings adam ourselves,
you know, I think we all come away with this
thing feeling like we're in a good spot.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Reports that he wanted to go back to Minnesota. Did
he express that desire to you.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
He never expressed that to me. I appreciate that about him.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
You know.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
For me, it was like he just couldn't wait to
get back on the field. And he really kept it
professional with me as far as just like I played
for you, I played for the Panthers, And so that's
the approach he really took with me, and so that's
the approach I took with him, you know. And and
really up until you know, the last you know, couple
of days where the conversation started to get more extended
and and we had to like, you know, get a
(07:59):
make sure we were all in the same page, because
this thing couldn't have happened.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
It might not have happened, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
And we had to be able to be in a
good place from a relationship standpoint where when we do
move forward, we got to make sure we're moving forward together.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
And I felt like we were. We were there.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
And then over the course of a couple of days,
and you know, Dan and Brant and the crew in Minnesota,
you know, working through this thing. You know, we found
a common ground.
Speaker 7 (08:21):
You said, I think you said you wanted to do
right by Adam. We know what the Vikings game, they
needed a receiver, Adam wanted to go home. How do
you guys benefit with this trade?
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Yeah, I think it's just obviously the what was exchanged
in the you know, just in the details of the agreement,
you know, I think that's going to help us for
a team that we're building and for our future. So
we feel great about that part. And then I think
it's just that receiver room, you know, that continued to
impress me, you know, in different ways different guys. And
now the opportunity for guys like Jalen Cocher, like bryceon Tremaine,
(08:57):
David Moore, Jimmy Horn, these guys to stay up up
and to find a huge void, you know, a role
that needs to be filled. And so again I think
competition brings the best out in all of us, and
here's another opportunity for us to compete for that. And
and we felt strongly enough about a young, talented group
that that we can do that. And I got to
give credit to Rob Moore, you know, who's really poured
(09:18):
into this young group and really developed these guys, you know,
in in the last year. And so you know, I
just Keishan Coleman is NonStop with these guys, you know,
and so I just really feel great about where that
group is at and I'm excited to see what comes
out of it.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Bryce really trusted Adam out there and maybe defendable years.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, once the will has to trade on him.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Say about what LI is.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
You know, I just feel confident about Bryce's leadership, you know,
I keep coming back to that, but it really is
you know, this is this is Bryce bringing guys together
and making different attributes of our players, our skill players
speaking specifically about the receivers come alive, you know, and
and the guys that have flashed it all on our
film every day. You know, and these are guys that
Andy and that Bryce have learned to trust, and so
(10:06):
it allows them to, you know, get excited about where
we're going.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
But at the same time, we're.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
You know, this is we know who Adam is, we
know what he could have brought to this team, you know,
and so we know that he's going to be missed
in that regard, But there's also an excitement for the
guys that are here.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
You with four inside linebackers for safeties, do you feel
comfortable with those numbers as well as the talent that's
in there.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
I feel comfortable with the guys who are here. But again,
we're going to keep looking all across the league, and
you know, transactions happen weekly, you know, and these rosters
they're not set in stone by any stretch, and so
we're going to continue to see, you know, based on
the film that we watched and where people ended up,
you know, to see if people can come in and
help us.
Speaker 6 (10:46):
And the premium is going to be on special teams.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
You know, are these guys that we can count on
game day, who have the attributes that we can develop
as coaches from a positional standpoint.
Speaker 8 (10:55):
So back to the wide receivers for a second brsh
and Tremaine ultimately made team. Yeah, can you explain why
why you thought he was deserving of a spot? And
is this a trend of this front office saying, hey,
if you perform in training camp, you get your chance.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
To do it.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
I think it was the whole body of work. For
me with Bryson. It was our ability to trust him
in a bunch of different roles. He played a couple
of positions. So for people who don't know how hard
that is, you know, when you come into a first
his first camp. He was in the meetings all spring,
but he wasn't on the field to be able to
come in play multiple spots, to be able to show
(11:34):
us that he can do some stuff on special teams.
That's exactly what we're looking for, you know. The toughness
in his style of play, the way he shows up
in the run game blocking, just the high level effort
that he gives every time he's on the field. It's
exactly what we're looking for in the character of a player,
a Panthers player. And so these are the guys that
get rewarded, are the ones we can who are dependable
(11:55):
and who are physical you know, and and bring a
variety of things that they can help us with on
game day.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
Was a Brad suggestion or a personnel suggestion.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I know, Brad's got the Standford.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
It was a personnel move.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
So this is somebody that Dan identified that we that
we gave a futures contract to from the commanders, you know,
and someone that they had their eye on from last year.
And you know, just you know, we didn't even get
to see him in the spring, so we really weren't
sure what we had. But he showed up healthy and
in great shape, and his conditioning was at such a
(12:28):
level that he can give maximum effort and anything. Everything
he did, which is such a great uh, you know,
just a great note for everybody, like your fitness level
allows you to do more, you know, and and he
just consistently got himself out there and gave gave great effort.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
With Adam leaving, how much does David Moore step up
as the veteran, kind of veteran voice in that room.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
Yeah, Dave.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
David's been a kind of steady, consistent, calming presence for
the younger receivers. He knows what it's like to battle
his way onto a roster. We drafted him in the
seventh round in twenty seventeen, and he was on our
practice squad for most of that year and really didn't
start to see significant snaps until the second year. So
he knows what the grind looks like, and he understands
(13:09):
the frustrations of a young player who is on the
practice squad and they can't just kind of give into
just a role on practice squad. You're trying to show
us that you can help us on game day at
some point. And so, you know, he's kind of just
been a really just a sounding board for me in
terms of the style, the effort, the characteristics, the attitude
(13:31):
that we're.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
Looking for every day.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
And so I'm just I'm glad Demos here and I know,
like he plays both sides, both he plays both outside
spots for us, So he's got versatility and he's able
to show the guys too. He'll also go in and
catch a punt, he'll go in and cover, he'll go
be a gunner at times, he'll cover a kickoff at times,
you know, and just the ability to learn more, to
be able to do more gives you a chance to
(13:54):
develop and make plays in this league.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
Where are you with Ryan Fitzgerald?
Speaker 6 (13:59):
He's our kick right now.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
But again, we're gonna take this thing week to week,
you know, and look see how he's doing and kind
of just continue to look at what's out there and
we'll make the right decisions for the Panthers as we
go along with this thing.
Speaker 7 (14:12):
Doesn't sound like a real strong vote of confidence. Was
there something in preseason that gave you pause?
Speaker 5 (14:17):
I would say the same thing for any other kicker
that was here. This is a performance type of league,
you know, in these opportunities, there are so many guys
out there that want these jobs. There's more kickers than
there are spots, you know, on the thirty two teams,
and so again it's that competition and this is a
good moment for him to take advantage of this opportunity
that he has.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Too.
Speaker 8 (14:38):
Promising developments at practice today, Nick s Gordon I seem
to be full pull participate of those Tommy Tremble. Can
you just give an update on their stays?
Speaker 5 (14:47):
Yeah, so Nick was cleared to be back into practice.
He took about fifty percent of the snaps he would
normally take, but he handled it well. I'll follow back
up with Danny to see how he comes out, you know,
just following the practice.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
But he looked good.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
He was out there running around Tommy same thing.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
You know.
Speaker 5 (15:03):
I was excited to just get him to put hands
on some people today and and fill that part out
because again that's the next step for him as we
get ready for game week. And yes, so Ikey Ikey
had appendectomy.
Speaker 6 (15:16):
So he he had appendicidies.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
He wasn't feeling good and then ultimately went to the
hospital and they said, all right, well we gotta we
gotta do surgery here. We have to remove this, and
so he had his appendix removed.
Speaker 6 (15:29):
He's day to day.
Speaker 5 (15:30):
We've seen these things turn around and a little over
a week. They can be longer, you know, just depends
on each individual body, how you respond to the surgery,
how your body heals the right way. So he's going
to be day to day, you know, all the way
up until the game. So that's something that we have
to keep our our eye on as we go. That
(15:51):
was Sunday night.
Speaker 6 (15:52):
So he started to feel sick a little bit before that.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
And then finally Sunday night he went in and then
was diagnosed with you know, appendicitis and and so they
removed his appendix.
Speaker 9 (16:02):
Understanding that all of this is a part of business,
including the Adam field and trade. What if the last
forty eight seventy two hour has been in addition to
the trade, really just the process of getting down to
fifty three.
Speaker 6 (16:14):
Yeah, it's always the hardest part for me.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
I think the week leading up to the last game,
you know, I feel it more. I can feel I
can feel the stress, I can feel how important this
is for all the guys, and so we can all
feel that, you know, And I just try to encourage
the guys in that to just enjoy the day, gratitude
for this moment, for all the hard work we've done together,
(16:36):
you know, and to make this last game a celebration
of the work we've done, to throw a great camp.
And then you turn around to make these decisions, and
they're really hard, but it's a really beautiful moment to
be able to connect with the player. And I know
it's a really hard day, but it's it's an opportunity
to be able to speak some truth, at least my
truth from what I saw, from what the coaches saw,
(16:57):
for what their next steps might be. We talked about
being developmentally minded, and my hope is that they leave
this place better than when they got here. And you know,
there was just a lot of appreciation for each other
and we were able to get a number of our
guys you know, back on practice squad. But of course,
you know, it's not the full group that was here,
and that takes a toll, you know, on all of us,
(17:19):
everyone around the building, you know, and it's always and
I love a party, so it's also just way less people,
you know, and so then it just it just feels different,
you know, And the thing that always brings us back
is just getting back on the grass, you know, regardless
of what happens before, when we get out there, at
some point during that practice, we're just playing football again.
And we were able to do that for the last
two days. It's it feels different, you know, and it
(17:41):
feels there's all the emotions that are involved and guys
that you know, people spend a lot of time with
who aren't here. But you know, to get back on
the grass to make it about football, to know that
we're working towards something brings us back. You're also a
couple more you're also bringing in a couple of new
faces too.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
I don't know how much you can talk talked about him.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
But Hendon Hooker and Jay Dallas you have a background
with what can you say.
Speaker 6 (18:04):
About those guys?
Speaker 5 (18:04):
Yeah, I'll talk about DJ first. You know, it was
with DJ for a bunch of years in Seattle. A
high character guy, a great teammate, a jack of all trades,
you know. He's a guy who can return a kick,
he can cover, you know, he can get in there
and play running back, carry the ball for you. You know,
he'll catch you out of the backfield. So he does
a lot. And I think just in general too, just
(18:25):
a culture piece of of who we are. He fits
right into the guys that we have here. Hendon Hooker
is a guy that I loved in the process coming
out of Tennessee. I had some great meetings with him.
He really impressed me as a man, you know, and
a really high character guy with a lot of talent,
a beautiful motion, you know, a big strapping guy who
can run, you know, and I think, you know, sometimes
(18:48):
I think Coach Campbell said it right, Sometimes guys need
to change of scenery, you know. And and he's had
great training up there. I'm I'm very grateful that we
get a player who's had professional training, you know, for
a while now, with sett and protections and run game
alerts and a lot of the different things that you know,
the offense that Detroit was able to build like that,
(19:09):
I really admire, you know, and to be able to
bring a guy in who's had exposure in that, you know,
and the talent and the character that that I'm excited about.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
You know, I'm glad he's gonna be here.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Last question moving forward with your rips at left tackle
until you.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
Know what if you said, yeah, Yoash will practice that
left left tackle right now, Brady, you'll get get in
some Also Brandon Walton, who was on our practice squad,
played a little tackle in the in the preseason game.
So we have some options, you know that for guys
that we can be able to kind of you know,
spot fill that and then we have to make decisions
and if he doesn't make it, we have to make
decisions on who's up on game day. But again, I'm
(19:45):
going to be super hopeful on this. We're going to
take it day to day and just connect with Ikey
and you know, hopefully you can get him back out
there on the grass at some point game week and and.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
Be able to you know, count.
Speaker 7 (19:54):
That you said you had a couple options on the table,
or any of them non playing options could be.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
I mean, we're just talking about everything right now. I
just want to be a part of his future of
what he wants to do. I just told him that,
you know, like in whatever capacity that is, whether it's
the fifty three or practice squad. You know, that was
just kind of the conversations that we left on.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
Right well.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
I'm just talking about wanting to be a part of him,
like the guy that I remember, you know, and I
think that he's on his way back there, and I
truly believe that, and I believe in him as a guy.
I mean, I had such a blast, you know, working
with him in this you know, short amount of time.
But you know, I'd love to see him back out
there at some point. And so it's just a matter
of us continuing to stay in touch and see where
we're at.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Thank you well, Sharon. Cut deadline occurred. We have an
NFL team ready for the for the real real season.
Speaker 10 (20:47):
Don't we Absolutely, And it might still be a little
bit inflex here over the coming days as well. Coach canals,
as you heard in that interview, made it very clear
that they're still going to be looking for different positions
to improve this football team. So but for right now,
we've got the initial fifty three, we got the practice squad,
and I'm ready to go for Jacksonville next week.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
You know, he get excited about that, Adam feeling sorry
to see him leave. I mean, he was a mature
influence in that locker room. But good for him and
maybe good for us.
Speaker 10 (21:16):
Huh oh, yeah, I mean he was just amazing. I
hate to see him go too. He was really Bryce
Young's his favorite target, his safety blanket, in such a
great veteran presence for what is now a very young
receiving corps. And we've got you know, it looks like
in our starting lineup, we're going to have two secondary
players in a rookie. So but they're they're confident in
Bryce's leadership. They believe that he's to be able to
(21:38):
bring this group along, and he's made enough strides over
the past two seasons and this preseason with Adam there
that he's ready to take the reins. And you know,
good for Adam getting to go home. I know his
wife was certainly to go home. So it's where he
started his career and I'm good for him to be
able to finish it there. But that the Panthers came out,
they feel like a in a good way with the
draft picks and the Viking Tappy as well. So as
(22:00):
as I can tell, all parties are are happy with
that trade.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, class move by us for sure. Okay, Sharon, in
a minute and a half, what record do we come
away with this season?
Speaker 10 (22:13):
You know, I'd love to be the eternal optimist and say,
you know, oh, eleven and six hasn't been bad. I
tell you what, I'd be really happy if we could
hit the seven win mark. And I know that doesn't
sound like a lot, but when you think about it,
this is only Dave Canal is the second season with
this team. You know, Bryce Young sat a lot of
games last year, so he's really sort of like going
into his second year as a pro. You've got a
lot of young guys on this team, still retooling this defense.
(22:35):
So I think it's expecting a lot to say, oh,
we're gonna go out and win the division and compete
for the super Bowl. And this is still a bit
of a rebuild. I think at this point, if you
see some progress across the entire football team, add on
to that five win total from last year, have Bryce
continue to grow? I think that that's progress for this team,
and I think people should be really happy with that.
That's that's sort of where I'm rolling right now.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
You just sit the nail on the head. It's how
Bryce performs and is he really the franchise quarterback like
we saw glimpses of that at the end of last season.
Speaker 10 (23:05):
Absolutely, and they certainly seem to think that he is
the guy. And when you talk to all the different players,
they have the utmost confidence of him. They really believe
in this kid. I mean, he's just grown by leaps
and bounce. He's much more vocal out there on the
football field this year, and he's very confident. You can
see that, and the way he carries himself on and
off the field and with the media. I mean, he's
(23:25):
just I think he's really coming into his own and
he's certainly got a plethora of weapons that they've surrounded
him with. Even without Adam Peeling. You've got, you know,
of course, team Act, the new rookie receiver, and you've
got Rico Daddle out there now with Cuba Hubbard as
a running back, so he's got weapons out there to
work with and they believe that he's ready to take
the next step this season.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
