Speaker 1 (00:00):
Discussing the issues that matter to you and keeping you
informed with what's happening in and around Indy. It's Community
Connection with Tina Cosby, brought to you by Child Advocates,
a champion for justice, opportunity and well being for children
on Praise Am thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
And good afternoon, and welcome to Community Connection. I'm Tina Cosby.
Today is Monday, December first, Eric Garnes. Of course, here
with Miss, with Miss, with me with Christmas, La La la,
la la la. Get the cobwebs out, So with Miss
with us, we are with here, we are here together.
Come hither tell you what? Yeah, you get thrown off

(00:45):
of tracks sometimes with things. Everything is just going crazy, right,
oh much? But anyway, today is Monday, December, the first
first day of the last month of the old year,
before we turn the page on the new year. Right,
I mean it's going so far well. I think of
all of the years that that I can recall, recently,

(01:06):
twenty twenty five has been one of the quickest. It
just it just has I don't know how to explain
it or what have but what have you. But it's
it's been a bus how was How was your Thanksgiving?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
It was very nice. I had a good time. Didn't
overdo it, Dad, That was a very nice about yours.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
It was very nice, very good. Didn't overdo it. Just
you know, we we said we were gonna just slow down.
We had we had a nice crowd. I had a
very nice crowd. And we weren't going to fix as much.
What they called get all fix all that food. We
weren't going to fix as much because we have Even

(01:45):
though we send people home with plates and to go
boxes and things, you still have a ton of stuff
in your refrigerato, and no matter how hard you try
to cut back, you still have a lot leftover. So yeah,
so it was good. It was really good. We we
got to see some folks we haven't seen, you know,
as always see some people we hadn't seen for a while.

(02:06):
And it was fun. It was a lot of fun.
Came down to the lighting of the Christmas here on
Friday night. Yeah, there were you know, the building was
a lot more robust than I thought it would be.
There was a whole lot of folks were here, you know,
employees and families and folks that worked in the building

(02:26):
that I didn't know because I guess the building, you know,
there's another side, there's another whole side, and apparently there's
a balcony out on what floor is that?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
That's the fourth floor.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Fourth floor, balcony, fourth floor.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Well you kind of stepped down a little bit between
three and four. It's right there.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
I had my grandson with No, I'm not taking him
to a balcony.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
I guess probably not.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
No, No, he's a little too rambunctious. So we kept him.
He seems full of energy. He enjoyed it though. We
watched on three, you know, the kind of semi restaurant
type building, and uh, you know Beth and her she
had a whole big family, bunch of folks for her
from her family. There were just a lot of people.

(03:12):
There were just a lot of people in here, uh
to watch and we all had a really nice time.
So we had hot chocolate, I made popcorn.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Oh yeah, that's yeah, it was.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
It was a lot of fun. So anyway, yeah, so
did that and then put up you know, it's always
traditional that they do the decorations here, like the tree,
and we kind of do the same at home. So
that was it.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
I was had a good weekend except by Sunday afternoon,
it wasn't so good.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Oh my goodness.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
I'm glad. I'm of ticket holder.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I am to I they're out of my vibration now
because there is no way you know what, Remember I
told you I was always just a little hesitant to jump,
I said, because they have a way of taking their
foot and pushing you off the cliff. Yeah, and these
last few games they have shown that they're just there
was no reason why they should not have been as

(04:09):
razor sharp and as productive as they have been the
first except they're coming up against some competition, some real competition,
and they fall apart each time they make mistakes. They
have done penalties. So there, you know, I don't have
any I mean, I'm glad they had a nice start,

(04:30):
but who who knew that their star defender was going
to go out with what could possibly be a torn achilles?

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:43):
No, I mean, now you know what. Don't take my
word for it, They said Calf and he said he
did say in interviews that it was higher up than
an achilles, so he didn't think that that's what it was.
He didn't see, But I'm listening to know what all
sports ca masters and reading what they say, and all
kinds of things, and they're saying that you can't rule

(05:05):
that out. But and if that is the case, that
would be disastrous because he would be lost. This is
late late, late in the years, we'd be lost for
a whole season. Again, we would and then we have
no more draft picks to get another quarterback because I
think the one that is going to be asking for
an extension he kind of stinks. He's been stinking it up. Now.
I know he's hurt. I know he's got a broken
bone in his leg, but.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, I don't know. I just I said to my wife,
I feel like it's the Colts of old coming.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Oh yeah, yeah, this is this is what I can
get used to.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
This is what I can't.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, the other I was used to, you know, I
was with the other the winning and the dominating and
everything else. I just couldn't get comfortable with that because
I'm like, where's the Colts. It's like, these last three
games have been.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
The cast was hopeful. I was very hopeful.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah we were all gone. Yeah well oh well yeah,
but good luck to them on Sunday and the rest
of the season. And I hope they have a nice
rest of the season, but I don't see too much.
There's there's just not too much anyway. Yeah, oh well
that's what we that's how we've learned to cope. Oh well,
well again, Today is Monday, December the first, and some

(06:15):
snow fell over the weekend, and we're expecting more accumulating
snow starting early this evening into tomorrow. Estimates are anywhere
from one to three or two to four inch bands,
depending on where you fall on the map. So you know,
just as always, pay attention to any and all weather alerts,
and please do your best to keep yourself and your

(06:37):
family alert.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
I did see there's a winter weather advisory again tonight
at seven.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Seven to seven to night till seven in the morning.
Is that now, well that go we'll go to a
warning tonight or it depends.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
There was just advising I think right now.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Right now advising. Yeah, yeah, okay, all right, well that's
we'll we'll watch. You know, it's winter almost, it is
not winter yet, we're still in the fall. So on
the show today, you're going to hear about a local
historic home built at the time by black women. It
is a home now being restored by black women. We'll

(07:15):
have the history and the detail. Yeah, I'm curious to
hear more about that one. Yeah, the history and the
details for that. That's going to be in our second hour. Also,
Eric and our second hour are very on Rita Green.
In addition to just being an outstanding colleague of ours
here at the Indianapol stations of Radio one, she is

(07:35):
just a tremendous force in the community for good and
she she hosts every year a huge Christmas giveaway, and
she's gonna bring us all the details of that and
how people can get help from her with that a
little later this hour tis the season for fraudsters and
scammers to lie, cheat and steal because they know we

(08:00):
as people are in the giving spirit. The BBB has
some guidance for you on what to look out for. Again,
they're going to join us about one thirty, so pretty
full show today right now. Three one seven four eight
zero thirteen ten. Three one seven four eight zero thirteen
ten is our number before we move on. Something something

(08:21):
did happen over something else did happen over the weekend,
and I asked that you continue to pray for our
good friend, Miss Cordelia Lewis Burke's on Saturday, she buried
her daughter, and the tragedy. It was just tragic because
just a few short months ago she buried her son,
so both of her children, both of her children gone

(08:43):
in less than a year. I did speak with her
briefly at the visitation, and she's doing about as well
as anyone would be who's lost both of her children
in a matter of months. I will say, though, one
of the more touching things that that I saw at
that visitation was Indianapois Mayor Joe hawk Sett. He was

(09:08):
right there by her side, right there with Miss Cordelia.
He was there, I'm thinking, and I'm pretty sure the
entire time. Miss Cordelia over the years, as you know
and as she has said and shared, has managed a
number of his political campaigns, including recent ones for mayor. However,
you could tell that his presence there wasn't about politics.

(09:31):
And I'm going to tell you why. A lot of
times you'll see people at events like this, they'll high
ranking or whatever. They'll come in and you know, they'll
they'll pay their respects, show up, have a group of
people and you know, I keep it moving and sometimes
maybe that's the best that they could do. I have
no comment on that one way or another. I'm just

(09:52):
saying that this one was different. The mayor was sitting
there by himself. He had no staff, he had no body.
If they were there, I didn't see him with him.
And the biggest thing was he was right there next
to her, right there next to her. And if you're well,
anybody knows, this isn't a black thing. This is just

(10:14):
a thing that at funerals, the family sits on the
front pew that's reserved for family. He was there. He
was there, sitting down, not up walking around, pressing flesh,
and sitting down supporting Miss Cordelia. Yes, And that struck
me and I went over and I gave him a hug.
I was just so impressed by it because you could

(10:36):
just tell he's there to support his friend. And he
was right there with her. And you know, we all
talk about a lot of different things, political here, political there,
but he's a genuine human. When it came to that,
he really was. And not that he is to be
commended or anything. He probably says, hey, it's not that

(10:56):
she's my friend. I think the world in Oliver and
I'm want to be there for her. And he was,
and he was so just wanted to just share that
that he was there with the family and that said
a lot. So again, please keep Miss Cordelia, her entire family,
and her amazing community of friends and colleagues in your prayers.

(11:17):
Speaking of politics, right now, a large protest rally is
underway once again at the State House. That's because Republicans
and the Indiana House of Representatives, the Indiana House of Representatives,
have released their proposal for new congressional maps right here
in the state. Their meeting right now to start the

(11:38):
mid cycle redistricting debate. In case you're not up to
speed on it, I want to play a little backgrounder
to bring you up to date from WRTV six. Let's
let's take a listen to that, okay, or we can
listen to it in a little I'm sorry, did I did? I? Yeah? Yeah.

(12:05):
The Senate, the president of the Senate here in the
state of Indiana, Roderick Bray, Senate President pro Tem, would
not call his folks into special because he said there's
not enough votes. There's not enough votes to pass it.
So the House is probably trying to put a little
pressure on the Senate because if the House does have

(12:28):
the votes to approve this new map. And I've seen it,
oh my goodness. So and it definitely would eliminate Frank
Mervan in Northwest Indiana District one. And it would definitely
eliminate Andre Carson right here in Indianapolis and Central Indiana
in District seven. Let's see, I'm looking more and more.

(12:54):
It's just it's just an absolutely ridiculous looking map. But
this is their draft of their congressional plan.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
I have it.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
I have it right here.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
No no, no, I apologize, I threw that up. They're
on you real quick. But again, this is day in
a day or two, but it gives you the fundamentals
of what we're talking about if you have not been
brought up to speed.

Speaker 6 (13:18):
Next week, state lawmakers will return to the state House
to consider redrawing congressional districts after pressure from the White House. Now,
the change of plans comes nearly two weeks after lawmakers
approve a journey until January. Tonight, I called up with
an expert and advocate about the next steps and the
redistricting conversation in the Hoosier State.

Speaker 7 (13:37):
It's obviously not done and dusted yet, so you know,
everyone is mobilizing and getting ready for you know, rapid
response next week at the state House.

Speaker 6 (13:51):
The final over mid cycle redistricting continues across Indiana.

Speaker 8 (13:55):
A pretty significant about face from the statement that the
Senate made just a few weeks ago that they didn't
have the votes and so they wouldn't be convening, and
so that's a real kind of one eighty from where
we're at.

Speaker 6 (14:06):
Tuesday, House Speaker Todd Houston says House Republicans will reconvene Monday,
and Senate President pro Tim Roger Bray says the Senate
will return a week later on December eighth, and make
a final decision about redistricting with.

Speaker 9 (14:20):
Less than a week to go to try to call
us back in Frankly, I'm offended by that, and I
think it's taking cues from folks out in Washington, d C.

Speaker 6 (14:32):
President Donald Trump has pushed states to approve new congressional
maps in an effort to help the GOP in the
midterm elections.

Speaker 7 (14:39):
It's interesting because what changed, right, We've seen the climate,
the political climate has just become increasingly dangerous.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
In a statement, Brace says redistricting mide cycle is getting
a lot of attention and causing strife in Indiana.

Speaker 7 (14:54):
We've had legislators, you know, be victims of swatting attempts,
and you know, there have been various threats made against
you know, pulling our federal funding and things like that.

Speaker 8 (15:06):
To some extent, a rational person would say, well, it
sure seemed like political violence worked. It achieved the goals
that it wanted, and it sends a very horrifying message
that this is an appropriate way of an acting change.

Speaker 6 (15:20):
Now, there will be a rally against redistricting at the
State House on Monday at noon. Tuesday, the group mad
voters who will returned to the State House for public
comment at a committee hearing. In a statement on social media,
Governor Mike Brown says he's grateful to the General Assembly
for agreeing to convene to vote on redistricting. He says
redrawing congressional maps will give Hoosiers the chance at fair

(15:43):
representation in Washington.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Fair, I guess is in the eye of the beholder,
you know. Here and this is this is how the
Indiana Star, Indianapolis Star, I'm Indian State of Indiana, Indiana
applus Star put it. They say, the lines appear. This
is the map that was released just a short time ago,

(16:06):
and that the lines appear to carve Indianapolis into four districts,
distributing it among the sixth, fourth, ninth, and seventh district.
Most of Indianapolis is currently represented by Democratic US Representative
Andre Carson. It also splits the first district, which is
currently held by Representative Frank Moran, grouping Lake County with
a handful of counties in the northern third of the state. There.

(16:31):
You know, you can go online and look at the
proposed map if you like. But this is this is nothing.
This is jeri mandering. It's not redistricting, it's gerrymandering.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
And we know that I must have missed something. I
thought there weren't.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
Enough votes to even in the Senate. So the House
is going to you know, I guess they're going to
go ahead and say, well, let's look at it, let's
try it, and then they'll send it to the Senate,
which still doesn't have the votes, but hoping to put
probably more pressure on the Senate. So here's the thing.
I'm going to break this down. Yes, this is this

(17:05):
is this is pressure coming from Donald Trump, who wants
to get as many people as many representatives on his
side in his pocket as possible. Guess what happens if
in the midterms, Trump doesn't have enough Republicans in the
House of Representatives or Trump doesn't have enough Republicans in

(17:29):
the Senate. Guess what happens the House of Representatives the
US House, they vote to impeach, the Senate votes to remove.
You know, the Senate is the second half of that process.
So what he's thinking about, if I don't get a
whole lot of people on my side to do what
I want and we lose all of this ground to
the Democrats, I could theoretically be put out of office,

(17:54):
see what I'm saying. That's that's what he's afraid of.
If he doesn't have the numbers that he needs. So's
he's going crazy. He's is frantically. That's that's the way
I see it. Now, that's probably a pretty tall order
because I don't know if the Senate would necessarily be
in play, but that's he's lame duck anyway. I guess

(18:15):
they could get him out early. But so that's that's
what he's looking for. He doesn't want to be he
doesn't want to be massacred in electorally electorally he just
doesn't want to. He doesn't want to do that, and
so that's why he's putting pressure on places like Indiana
to get even more. This could backfire on the state

(18:36):
of Indiana. Representative Andre Carson left a statement this morning
as they convened. He says, today Congressman Andrea Carson made
the following statement in reaction to Indiana's proposed congressional map.
The Hoosier values matter more than DC threats and bullying.
Splicing up our state's largest city, its biggest economic driver

(18:58):
into four parts is redictu. It's clear these orders are
coming from Washington, and they clearly don't know the first
thing about our community. Hoosiers have made their voices heard
and won't stand for it. And again that's the comment
from a Representative Carson. So we're going to see what happens.
They started the session early, which means they'll probably end

(19:21):
the session earliest. Session normally starts January first, and now
that they're starting December first, that moves everything up so
they could be done with their work by as early
as February. We'll see. And as far as where this
goes and how, nobody knows, but they're doing it. And
they may be just doing things for the record, just
to be on records so that they don't get picked
on or bullied by Trump. It could be, you know,

(19:44):
the swatting. A lot of them have already been a
lot of the Republicans in the State Senate have already
been intimidated and harassed and things of that nature already.
So they're putting people's names on the record, so we'll see.

Speaker 10 (20:00):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
So but I was just looking in the long run
because if these maps aren't drawn congressionally and he doesn't
get as many Republican congressional representatives as as he needs
to stay in office, he could be in big trouble.
Let's let's go to the phone lines. Jeff, go ahead.
How are you.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
Hey, Kenna, Ericat you guys doing doing good? I think
I hope you guys had a great holiday.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Did you You know? We did.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
I did a lot of a lot of people showed up.
So yeah, it turned out very very well. And Tina,
you are absolutely crazy. This was about Donald Trump from
getting him.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Yeah, that's the way I mean, that's if you look
at it all the way down the line, that's exactly
what he's trying to avoid.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
And you know, and we see his cope members going
after follow Republicans. Yeah, you know with the swatting and
all that, and you know, you know, I'll tell you
I do believe, you know, I get your perspective. One,
they are Republicans. They want this guy gone. They won't
even going they they won't come out public and say it,
but he won't about it because they know these bad news.

(21:04):
And now we find out that that Donald Trump and
Pete Hickson might have committed murder.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Yes, war crimes is what they're calling it. Uh yeah, murder,
but murder. Yeah, the murder is a war crime, absolutely exactly,
especially people that are still still living. I don't know that. Yeah,
you all know the specifics in terms of military and
things of that nature. But my understanding was if there
were still somebody alive, uh, and you give the order

(21:31):
go ahead and kill them anyway, is that that's against
the Geneva Convention I understand, and all bunch of other stuff.
So yeah, I wish James will be back probably wednesday.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
Ye can't you know there's any other veterans out today?

Speaker 2 (21:45):
You guys know that stuff. I don't. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (21:47):
They surrendered, you know, you know, you gotta hey, yes,
there are some things that happened, but this was not
the case. You know, Uh, these guys and we're still
insure they were drug runners or what, you know, because
they're a live to tell the tale. So you know,
we got an outlaw administration. We got Pete hagg said,
the man has no business anywhere, dear Depentagon. The man

(22:09):
is a you know, he he did, a sexual abuser,
a drunk, and a racist. And you know, even his
general even the generals say, hey, man, what you're doing
is not right. Admirals.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
But here's my question. How hard is it to They
said they're going to look into it. How hard is
it to look into it? I mean, isn't there like
those videos that we see or whatever. I mean, who
issued the order? Is it?

Speaker 11 (22:37):
Is?

Speaker 2 (22:37):
It is? I I don't know. You're a military, so
you tell me. Is it a complicated process to look
into that?

Speaker 5 (22:42):
I mean there's a I mean, there's just data out there,
just picture you know, you follow the paper trailer. There's
isn't out there, you know, because uh, and and now
Donald Trump is throwing Pete heggs at under the bus
that he didn't tell me that he kills that about this.
He told me that. Of course, you know, once again,
Donald Trump doesn't wanna take blame from anyway.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
No, no, do I know, Pete, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
I know, Pete. Pete never told me nothing about that.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
No, Pete, who yeah? What what?

Speaker 5 (23:09):
So? But you know, uh yeah, you know, we gotta.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
But here, here's the thing. I wonder how that would
go if they were to do an investigation and to
find that he indeed was was guilty. I mean, wouldn't
the United States have to turn him over again militarily.
I don't know, I don't know the process. Well, this

(23:33):
is international.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. But I'm
pretty sure what the First of all, I've been hearing
that this guy is really paranoid. Now ever since Charlie
Kirk got whacked, this guy's been really worried about his
personal safety. I understand that that margor Tilla Green, she
worried about her personal safety and all that. And remember,

(23:55):
the guy that killed Charlie Kirk was a right winger.
He was not a trans person, and he was a
right winger, you know, just like Charlie Koker. This is
beautiful civil war going on in the Republican Party, which
I ain't gonna really get into right now because time
won't allow it. You know, you probably have to you know,
get you know, somebody really in different but maybe Andre
Carson knows some more about that. But anyway, but you know,

(24:17):
we are I think the house of cars are slowly
falling apart and it's a good thing. And you know
this is just it's going to get It's going to
get worse for it gets better. Yeah, it's gonna get worse.
It's going to get pretty bad. So people just buckle
up and enjoyed the ride. But all your clowns out there,

(24:37):
you know who you are, but you ain't. You don't
have to courage to tell a team of consent that
you voted for that for that.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
But what we need to do is to pay attention
to what's going on. Yeah, pay attention especially here. The
stage house is really and thanks Jeff. And I want
to say this. I cannot say this strongly enough. People
like to say, why are you talking about that? That
has nothing to do with me here in Indianapolis. I don't.
It doesn't bother you know that that doesn't affect Yes,

(25:04):
it does, because what is done here is going to
impact what they're trying to do in Washington, d C.
Go ahead, Marvin, how are you.

Speaker 11 (25:15):
Good?

Speaker 5 (25:15):
After good afternoon?

Speaker 4 (25:17):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (25:18):
I am well, I am well, thank you.

Speaker 11 (25:20):
You know.

Speaker 12 (25:21):
The reality is is I knew they I need to
They were going to bring up the district and I
knew wasn't over with. Everybody was celebrated. And the crazy
thing is they should be an up war in this
state like before. But I think people just don't get it.

Speaker 2 (25:37):
I don't Yeah, I don't think they do.

Speaker 11 (25:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (25:39):
Prich Illinois said that they will respond whatever Indiana does.
The Democrats are standing up, and.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
The other yeah they are, and the other organizations like
a Common Cause and the like, uh, they too are.
They've got the lawsuits ready because apparently this runs smack.
They have contra prairiy to the Indiana state Constitution. So
we heard it right here in our studios that they said,
well when as soon as they yeah, if they drop

(26:07):
a map and say hey, this is what we want
to do, we're going to be in court a minute
or two later with our lawsuits. So they may it
may be a map that they're never able to use
or won't be able to use in time. I don't know,
I don't know all the timing and all of that
other stuff, but it's, uh, there's going to be a
fight anyway you cut it. Any way you cut it.

Speaker 12 (26:27):
Yeah, they said that, they said that the Republicans did
not if they really against it, they could deny the
A form in the Senate and kill this anyway, you know,
So we'll see what happens. Yeah, you know, it's a
shame that the Trump and I'll I like them, you know,

(26:47):
having it going from him to Ron and oh.

Speaker 10 (26:51):
I mean it's crazy.

Speaker 12 (26:52):
But any attention to the war crimes. And I wanted
to take Penie track and watch and I watch that
kind of stuff, watch jac Binnery, old Jeffrey Feed or
I just could watch and listen to the things they
were there. But I mean, it's this country. I mean,

(27:13):
we have a friend with that that kind of stuff.

Speaker 5 (27:18):
It's crazy.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
All right, Thank you appreciate it, Mark, and we'll be
back right after this.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
Let's get back to the conversation. It's community Connection with
Tina Cosby, brought to you by Child Advocates, a champion
for justice, opportunity and well being for children on Praise
Am thirteen, ten, ninety five point one.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
FM, and we're back with Community Connection and Eric. We're
going to go from a politics We're gonna shift. Okay,
we'll do Christmas, Christmas Eve. That's what types of things. Yeah, fun,
shift up some of the what you need to know,
some of what you want to enjoy, and some of
the other things. Back with us today is Harry Brown Webster.
She is the founder, founding director of the Genesis Theater

(28:04):
here in the city of Indianapolis. And uh, Christmas, Yes,
Christmas is coming, it's here. It's here for us, Tina
the production So tell us about tell us about what
you have coming up and who you have with you
this time.

Speaker 13 (28:18):
Yes, thank you, and good afternoon to your listening audience.
I'm Sherry Brown Webster with the Genesis Theater Company and
we have a wonderful, fabulous, fabulous show coming up. It's
called Christmas at the Jewel. This show is different than
what we've done in the past. But we've done this show.
This is our second time and our last time doing

(28:39):
the show. But the show is done dinner theater style.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
I love that.

Speaker 13 (28:44):
Yes, yes, exactly exactly. So in addition to you know,
you're actually getting to see a wonderful, fabulous show, you
get a wonderful, fabulous meal, and you know those some
cookiness whipping, its flipping, its cooking it up over there
at the Jewel Event Center center there Miss Cynthia Bates
and Pastor Larry Bates and their family over there, just clipping.

(29:06):
So they've got a wonderful, soulful buffet prepared for our
patrons and our guests that come and see Christmas at
the Jewel. We have three shows December the eighteenth and nineteenth.
Both of those shows are at six o'clock, and then
we have a show on that's December eighteenth and nineteenth,
so Thursday, Friday, and then we have a show on Saturday,

(29:28):
December twentieth, and that show.

Speaker 2 (29:30):
Is at one o'clock.

Speaker 13 (29:31):
So the doors open at six, the buffet begins at
six thirty, and then the show begins about about an
hour and fifteen minutes after that, So by eight thirty
on Thursday and Friday you're out the door. So it's
really just two and a half hours.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
So is this an original production or it is something
that you're redoing? So okay, yes, it is.

Speaker 13 (29:52):
An original production. Again, we did it back in twenty
twenty three to.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
Rave Reviews Rave Reviews.

Speaker 13 (30:00):
So it's a great show. It's actually I've said to
people before that it's our answer to the Dickens. Okay,
so we kind of so there's a mixture, you know,
you kind of. There are three children and Tina. The
last time we were on your show, we were looking
for the children.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Yes, I remember that you sent out the call.

Speaker 13 (30:16):
Yes, we meet out the call, and your listener's answered
for us. So thank you so much for that. So
we have the children, and I have one of the
children with us who's starring in the show with us
here today as a guest with us. Would you like yes,
I would like to introduce to your listening audience, mister
Tyrrell Smith. He's a very gifted and talented actor and singer,

(30:41):
and I first saw him his mom reminded me when
she called me to tell me that her son would
be available for the show. She reminded me that I
had met her at I think at a service at
a church someplace. But I recently saw him actually back
in May, I saw him at Thomas Edison's School Number forty.
He was starring in a production that they did there

(31:03):
and he was playing Daddy Warbucks in Annie, so I
saw him and I got to actually talk with him
after the show, and I said, wow, you are really
talented and you can really sing, and you're really gifted.
And I said, someday maybe we can use you. And
here we are using him for Christmas after Jewel.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
Yeah. Well, mister Tyrrell Smith, welcome. How are you hello?

Speaker 4 (31:22):
I'm good.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
How are you good? Good? Good? So how long have
you been acting?

Speaker 14 (31:25):
I've been, I guess, professionally acting in musical theater and
wide range theater for about two years now.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Uh huh. So what what drew you to the art?
What what do you think was it? Did you watch
a certain movie or somebody in your family? Okay, go ahead.

Speaker 14 (31:42):
Originally, my first, I guess, beginning when it came to musicals,
was when I first watched the twenty fourteen version of
Annie starring you know, Jamie.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Fox and good Show. It was my.

Speaker 14 (31:58):
Dear mother's explanation to me and my brother on how
my two older sisters are a part of the system
of foster care and the whole adoption system and everything,
and then live theater, which I want to pursue in life.
I first watched a production at a production of The
lo ray Maid at Hamilton Southeastern.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
So yeah, yeah, So, so how is this one different
than the ones you've had on your resume up to
this point.

Speaker 14 (32:27):
Well, it's my first Christmas musical. I've done Christmas acting shows,
but this is my yeah, my first like really big
Christmas show that I'm doing. Almost everything in the roles
are really all just spread around in a wide range.
Looking at the script, you can tell it's an excellent

(32:48):
piece ran by an excellent director. It's phenomenal. It's just
it's really great. The show's really great.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (32:55):
He plays the role of Billy Wilson. He has two
younger sisters with him and they get kind of caught
up in a whirldwin with an angel and she takes
them back in time to the Biblical days and they
actually see you know, me to Mary and a Joseph
and then their carollers in the show, and yeah, I'm
all excited.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
And I will just give this one little.

Speaker 13 (33:16):
Nugget for Tina. He does get to sing the Michael
Jackson song Give Love on Christmas Day, and it's a beautiful.
I mean, he just really nails it.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
And it's a beautiful song. When did you start singing?

Speaker 14 (33:28):
When I started singing about the age of four or five, Actually,
when I started watching Disney Channel based movies set in
the two thousands or twenty and ten times descendings, high
school musical all of those with my sisters, and they
kind of.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Just, oh, it's great.

Speaker 14 (33:48):
I love the guys in the show, but I really
picked up on the musical components.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
You ever get nervous? Not really? So you liked it?
You love to be out there?

Speaker 14 (33:59):
Yes, I really, And I think that's another thing when
it comes to theater for me, especially live theater, I
love how I can express myself in different ways each show.
Each character is something different and something special to me
that I can really just give to other people.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
And make it special to them. How old are you,
I'm thirteen thirteen. Yeah, I'm just wondering where you find
I mean a lot of the actors and actresses that
you speak with have lived, you know, yes, somewhat, So
it's like, where do you find these characters? And I
kind of know you've seen them so you can jump
into them. So that's great. Congratulations, I'm getting Is everything

(34:38):
ready to go? We are saying about ready ready, Yes,
we are just about ready to go.

Speaker 13 (34:42):
We just need people to support us. Okay, tickets and come,
you know, ready and excited to see this wonderful show.

Wonderful story. We're not going to give away too much
at all, but you have some wonderful talent there. Young
mister Smith and all of his thirteen years is bringing

(36:36):
a wealth of experience to it, and I know he will.
You know what though, a lot of people who have
that gift that he did, they truly do have the
ability to jump into different I don't think age necessarily
is an indicator. It is not.

Speaker 5 (36:48):
It is not.

Speaker 13 (36:49):
I mean, if you are gifted and talented, I mean,
especially like Tyrrell Smith is, you want to get as
much action as you can if you will. You want
to get as much experience as you can and with
different directors.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Yes you can, so, mister Smith, before we let you go,
encourage everybody to come and see you. You have the mic,
Come see Christmas at the Jewel.

Speaker 14 (37:09):
I guess it's a wonderful show and a wonderful experience
with an even wonderful cast that I'm sure you'll fall in.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
Love with or maybe fall in love with me. Okay,
the two for that is absolutely wonderful. And again once again,

be a lot of fun. And you do eat well.
I've eaten over there. I don't know how many I say.
I always get around of food when I'm talking about stuff.
But the food and enterty mood, they do, they do.
I love dinner theaters, I really do. So this is fantastic.

(38:17):
Thank you again for coming in coming all the way down.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
And we're back with Community Connection. And as we said, Eric,
or as I said, we're gonna continue with the Christmas theme,
I guess the rest of the show, rest of the
way out, uh. And this is something that this part
of Christmas, the giving spirit that those who liked to lie,
cheat and steel there like to take advantage of. But
we are grateful because we have agencies like the BBB

(40:15):
UH and others and people who work at agencies like
that that do their best to keep us as consumers
not only aware but safe and back with us. Final
time this year, Final time this year hard to believe.
Jennifer Adavanny, Director of Communication for the BBB of Indianapolis. Jennifer,
how was how was Thanksgiving?

Speaker 11 (40:36):
It was good. It was the first one with our
daughter and we gave her a little bit of purade
turkey for the first time and she devoured it. And
so she did interact with her cousin.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
How old is she now?

Speaker 11 (40:51):
She is eight months?

Speaker 2 (40:52):
Because I was going to say you it took both
of my well a lot of times if you give
them meat or things like that, they don't like they
got that wow wow, you know, but you say you
puraded the well, I guess you know when the when
you buy it in the jars or.

Speaker 11 (41:06):
Yeah, I didn't create a turkey. That does not sound
appealing to me whatsoever.

Speaker 2 (41:10):
But it was pre boughts, So she got she got
a little taste of the turkey there.

Speaker 11 (41:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
Yeah. So but we we were talking, you know, about
the plays and then we're going to talk a little
bit later in the show about some giveaways, and of
course we uh continue with our Christmas toy drive as
well for our Indianapolis radio stations. But it's it's I
don't want to say people let down their guard. But
people do kind of have a feel good spirit about

(41:39):
themselves around this time of year, and scammers and fraudsters
know it, and they drive a truck through it every time. Yes,
we do every time. So where do you want to start?

Speaker 11 (41:51):
Well, you mentioned toy drives. I think it's a great
topic to talk about, kind of when you're looking for
the hottest toys this season and the scams associated with that.
Every year there's something with this type of scam. I
often think of. I don't remember the movie back in
the nineties with Arnold Schwarzenegger called Jingle All the Way.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
I've seen the title. I've never looked looked at. It
was a good, good movie.

Speaker 11 (42:15):
As a kid, it was really entertaining. But the kind
of the premises of this parent who's trying to do
right by their their son who wants the hottest toy
this season, and like the trials and tribulations that he
went through to try to get it and had sinned
bad in it, and he's another parent also trying to
get the same toy. So I always always think of
that when it comes to this. For people are trying
to make their kids happy with a really hot toy.

(42:37):
That they want for the year. The thing is, instead
of going into the stores and trying to necessarily compete
with other buyers, you're competing with scammers online if you're
going that route where scammers will take advantage of people
by setting up these fake websites or they create these
phony ads and to lure you and try to mimic

(43:01):
real website. So what happens is if you go and
purchase or think that you're purchasing this product, you either
will get a counterfeit item. It may be non existent
at all. And uh so that's where scammers are really
good about looking up what are those hot items. So
if you see it out in social media that says

(43:22):
like there's limited stock, or they have these flash sales
or theo's prices that are just way too good to
be true.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
I was going to say, isn't one of the red
flags a low price that you just can't can't believe that?
Uh wow, look at how cheaply I'm going to be
able to get this this hot toy. Isn't that? Is
this an indicator? Okay, go ahead, I'm sorry to mean that.

Speaker 11 (43:42):
No. No, I think it's important thing to train people that,
especially when it's a hot, hot toy, prices might be
a little more pricey for that reason. So the fact
that you got it to steal is going to be
an indicator. If you go to the website, though, and
you see that the website doesn't have any physical address,
or there's no con tack number, or they pour grammar

(44:02):
on the site, those two are going to be signs
that you're dealing with a scammer, because you want to
know who do contact if something were to happen, or
where they're located. And even if they have an address
on there, look it up on a map to see
if it's located in the middle of nowhere, or if
it's somebody's home, or if it's you know, someplace that
doesn't seem like it's from a legitimate store. So if

(44:24):
you can buy from the reputable retailers instead, really do
your research before you buy. If you're going to make
a purchase, use your credit card if you can. You
don't want to pay with gift cards or anything that's
essentially like cash, because if it ends up being producent,
you're you're not going to get your money back.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
Yeah, Yeah, what is the hot is it? The the
what is it the Boo Boo the hot toy this year.

Speaker 11 (44:48):
So there's a few so Boobo talk about. Yeah, it's
one of those. Yeah. My nephew even mentioned over this
past weekend how you want some intent to switch to.
So that's another hot one I've been seeing. There's even
like these Ai story Bears that are out there, even
like this Disney Stitch interactive plush or this Furby DJ.

(45:09):
It's like a Furby rainbow. I think those are the
ones I've heard are kind of the hot ones that are, uh,
the kids want this year. What the.

Speaker 2 (45:22):
J Ferbie DJ? I've never heard of that one. What
does that? What does that one do? Fbi DJ?

Speaker 11 (45:32):
I guess I play some music. I have to look
it up. It's funny though Ferbie's I thought we were
past that. I remember that being a big thing back.

Speaker 3 (45:39):
Years ago, long time ago.

Speaker 11 (45:42):
Yeah, but this one is uh it's an interactive toy
and it looks like a long Ferbie like a caterpillar
kind of looking Ferby. But play as music is lights
motion games.

Speaker 2 (45:58):
So you say Nintendo switch two that there's always one
electronic and one like what you're talking about Nintendo switched to.
So that's just the second generation of the original Switch.

Speaker 11 (46:11):
Yeah, it came out with a new upgrade version. And
so working about that. When the iPhone comes out, you know,
you gotta have the latest one, right.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
Yeah, So what is the switch? I mean, it's it's
a handheld video game, right.

Speaker 11 (46:25):
Yeah. You can't connect things like your your cell fall
or something. You can take it with you and then
you can play all these different games on it. I'm
going to kind of date myself, but I kind of
equated to the modern day game boy or the.

Speaker 2 (46:39):
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm going to date
myself because my kids, my kids wanted we we ended
up buying. We got a pink one and a blue
one or whatever, these little game boys that the kids
wanted when they were younger. You bought one, Eric, I
bet you did. I was gonna say, yeah, yeah, so
but that and that. So the Switch is just an

(47:00):
upgraded version of the game. Yeah, it has to be,
except that the games have to be more expensive though. Yeah,
games are what fifty sixty bucks.

Speaker 3 (47:10):
I'm looking at that now, what sixty nine?

Speaker 2 (47:12):
Oh my goodness, that's what a unit. That's what one
of the consoles used to cost.

Speaker 3 (47:17):
And the price of this starts AT's words.

Speaker 2 (47:21):
Imagine having more than one child at once. One I
want one. Well, if you've got one, I want one.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
Yeah, to go to a spend a lot of money
on that.

Speaker 2 (47:31):
Go to a discount go to a discount website that
rebuilds these things and refurbishes them, and you can get
them for I have price until the kids get a
little older, because they you know, at that age, I
don't know parents. I guess I don't know. But anyway,
that's a whole other show. Jennifer will do that one later.
But the money that folks spend on certain things at Christmas,

(47:51):
so so again the season's hottest toys. Beware of the scam.
And again the indicators are price, price points, which is
low and what's the other two? I think you said
price points? Was I remember that?

Speaker 11 (48:06):
Because if they there's ads claiming to have limited stock,
or these slash sales, or you don't have contact information
on the website when you go to it, those are
going to be indicators for it. If you don't know
who the retailer is, do your research, Okay, put them
in the search engine. Put the scam with it or
is it legitimate? See what's out there what's being said.

(48:27):
And also you can utilize BBB Scam Tracker to see
if people have reported having experienced a scam with that.

Speaker 2 (48:35):
That retailer, Jennifer, We were running a little bit behind.
Do you have a few minutes to stay with us?
Because we got a couple more, a couple more of
these that we want to make the public aware of.
If you have a few more minutes, do you have
a few minutes? Absolutely, Okay, We'll take a quick break
right here and be back with more right after this.

(48:56):
And we're back just going through some of the scams
and cons. I guess I don't know the grips that
folks have, especially if Christmas. This is an interesting one
regarding a French bulldog online, it may not exist. Tell
us a little bit about that one.

Speaker 11 (49:16):
So we do these studies that need to be related
to these scams, and so some years ago we did
one on pet scams, and we recently came out with
the updated study related to pet scams where French bulldogs
intends to be a very popular breed that people want
to purchase online. But the thing is, scammers are once
again exploiting people for their love for these popular breeds

(49:38):
like the French bulldog or German shepherds to wallas, and
it even extends to beyond just dogs. So this is
a scam that can be pretty pricey because of how
expensive breeds can be, and it's especially this time of year.
Pets sometimes end up being a gift for the holidays. Differently,

(49:59):
we wreck and then that maybe you let the person
who's going to receive that give meet the dog first,
or yeah, fits their lifestyle, all of that. But regardless
of how you go about trying to purchase the pet,
if you're looking online, you really have to be careful
for these cammers because they're very good at doping with

(50:22):
they'll use images from other sites that if you just
do a simple reverse image search, you might see where
it's popping up in all different places, so how can
it be from this cellar? You might see that they're
going to put off allowing you to see the animal
through a video chat or multiple photos that are dated

(50:46):
or things. They trying to skirt all of that, and
then they come up with these excuses of why they
need more money from you. So if you made the
purchase and they say, well, we have these extra that
fees because the dog got eas these shots, or it
needs a heated crates to be shipped, or you know,
there's extra shipping charges or these some one thing after another.
And the thing is they do that they keep adding

(51:08):
more and more on until you finally realize, wait a minute,
something's not adding up, and then they disappear. They got
a lot of money out of you.

Speaker 2 (51:16):
What are some of the price points just for the
dog itself alone, like, say, for instance, a French bulldog.

Speaker 11 (51:23):
I mean, well, the median loss from reports that we
received related the pet scams through September of this year
so far around six hundred dollars. What actually a French
bulldog costs I don't know off hand, but sometimes these
breeds can be thousands of dollars.

Speaker 2 (51:41):
That's what I was thinking. Yeah, way up in the thousands.
So yeah, be careful, be careful. How to protect your
identity from a data breach that happened here years two ago?

Speaker 15 (51:54):
Was it?

Speaker 5 (51:54):
Eric?

Speaker 11 (51:55):
Was?

Speaker 2 (51:56):
Years so ago? And I went to file my taxes
and found out that my Social Security number was used,
was found to have been attempted to use in a
data breach with the IRS. I wish they would have
because they could have paid off my taxes for me,
but they didn't anyway. They blocked they caught it as fraudulent,

(52:20):
blocked it and then I just in turn had to
file a paper return which was fine too, you know,
and then I had to file an affidavit that I
was the victim of identity. But you know, sometimes when
you're you're not even doing anything, like hundreds of employees,
you're not doing anything, and these these fraudsters get in
and they hack and they do what they can do.

(52:41):
We have tons of protection now against that, but just
from an individual basis, how can you do? Because they
do like to hold these companies hostage, There's no doubt.

Speaker 11 (52:51):
Oh absolutely. I mean it's today's visual age. We're constantly
having to put in our information when we're making approaches
or signing up for or some program or whatever it
may be. And then these companies will store that data
and it even could be your payment information or like you,
in your case, your social Security number. And so these

(53:13):
criminals love to then try to hack those businesses. They
get access to all that data, and what they'll do
is go to the black market to sell it. They
might use it to try to get your identity in
your case, you might try to get your financial information,
they might try to claim unemployment benefit benefits from it.

(53:38):
It just it depends on what they end up doing
with it. And so that's why it's really important to
be proactive as best you can. You know, when you're
going to give information like your name, your address, logging credentials,
that the company that you get information too to make

(53:58):
sure legitimate. And that's where you also got to overshare
information online. There's a lot of time there's these quizzes
or polls or viral things that go around that seem harmless,
and if you click on it and it wants to
have access to your information, you don't know where what
they're doing with that information. I would be hesitant to

(54:20):
engage with that.

Speaker 2 (54:21):
Well, i I've started, uh, you know, really being sensitive
to you know, even paying a bill at a restaurant
and they want you to put your you know, they
have those little table I call them table cash registers.
What are those called? It's I don't know, but anyways,
almost like a kish table kiosk. Yeah, and uh one

(54:43):
of the one of them said you you have to
use your email or you can't pay at the table.
I'm like we'll send them my over here because you're
not getting my email. Because all you're going to do
is flood it. First, it's it's an it's an information grab,
and then you're just going to be flooding it with
all kinds of advertising and things like that, and you
can't get rid of and even if you unsubscribe or
try to do it, it takes. It's like getting gum

(55:05):
off the bottom of your shoe. Those things, the way
that they morph into this and that, and you know
they're they're so I just I just tell them, well,
if that's the requirement, I'm not doing it. And so
because I have every.

Speaker 11 (55:19):
Right to do that, and you know, there's a lot
of convenience and yes, I'll just pay while I'm at
the table, But in the long run, is it convenient
if you're having to deal with identity becau. I'm sure
what you went through was a pretty rigorous process.

Speaker 2 (55:32):
Yeah, yeah, it really kind of was. But like I said,
I wish they would have gone ahead and finished and paid.
They were looking for a refund. It's like oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, money.
I have no children to little kids, no more so anyway,
that was that, but so so the again the to

(55:53):
protect yourself from the data breaches as best you can,
your best guidance Jennifer, So.

Speaker 11 (56:01):
Again really being protective of what you what information you
put out there, and that's whether on a website or
you know, paying things at a restaurant, Pulti Media, whatever
it is. You constantly want to monitor your bank statements,
your credit reports and get those alerts frequently so if
something does happen, you can act on it quickly. Usually

(56:21):
if there is a data breach, the company will inform you,
but not not always. That's why having that information is good.
I also recommend people go to a website called have
I Been Owned?

Speaker 2 (56:33):
Oh, let me get that one down like that one. Yeah,
that's that's catchy that have I Been Owned instead.

Speaker 11 (56:41):
Of the O for own. It's a py and what
it does is if you put in your email address,
it will check to see if it's been associated with
the data breach. And so you know, monitoring that if
you have been involved in a data breach, you certainly
want to put a credit freeze if you can, or

(57:02):
fraudler on your credit reports. Like I said, monitor those
those statements regularly, so if you see a fraudulent charge
you can immediately contact credit card or your banks to
put a stop to it.

Speaker 2 (57:16):
Yeah, all every with all three of the major reporting agencies.
I'm froz I froze everything. Uh so that if I
so much as needed, I don't know, I have to
unfreeze anything. So that's that's a great idea to freeze.
So have I been owned dot com?

Speaker 11 (57:34):
Yes, but it's a P instead of an okay in place.

Speaker 2 (57:37):
Of the okay h A V E I, P.

Speaker 5 (57:44):
B E E N P W N E D.

Speaker 2 (57:53):
The P okay okay, okay, okay okay that is ah
So is that a new website?

Speaker 11 (58:02):
I don't know how long it's it's been around, but
it's not well known. But I find it pretty useful
because it tells you the months in the year and
like the company that the data breach was associated with
and can it can be pretty eye opening. It just
goes to show how often scammers are targeting companies to

(58:24):
get their data because data is such viable information nowadays,
and that's if you work for your company. It's even
important to to kind of be aware of those fishing
attempts because they'll try to say, oh, I need to
wire this money. I posed your boss whatever it is,
to try to wire money or make a quick payment
for something, and people not knowing the why theerd to

(58:48):
go and do it, and that's how they can sometimes
get access to these companies to hack your information.

Speaker 2 (58:53):
There you go. Well alrighty, that's ah, well, that's a
whole lot, so I thank you. Did did we forget anything?

Speaker 11 (59:04):
I don't think so. It's just all important information year round,
but especially now for a lot of people ever doing
your shopping. However you're doing your shopping and putting your
information out there to keep in mind.

Speaker 2 (59:14):
Okay, and your website again.

Speaker 11 (59:17):
BBB dot org bes a better business bureau. And then
we're else the local. Give us a call if you
have any questions or need some guidance to see something
at the scam you can call it three one seven
eight two.

Speaker 2 (59:33):
All right, Happy holidays to you and your family. Enjoy.
This will be the first one with the little one too, right,
the first Christmas yep. Enjoy, Enjoy and we'll talk with
you next year. Okay, all right, thank you, Jennifer.

Speaker 5 (59:48):
All right, but.

Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
We're back, we are back, we are back, We're back again.
Christmas theme. You know, we have to we have to
put a little caution in there, because as a as
a good of a feel good season as it is, UH,
there's always somebody out there trying to take advantage of it,
and we want to make sure. Yeah, the scammers, they
should find something else to do. They're having too much fun,

(01:00:21):
having too much fun scamming. Yeah, until they get caught anyway.

Speaker 16 (01:00:26):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
This our next guest. She's not even a gues She
needs no introduction. She is the Miss Rita Green. Ms.
Rita of course is a colleague here, but she is
also uh the CEO and executive director of the Resource
Hub Foundation, and the work that she does with the
Resource Hub is just phenomenal. And she is so kind

(01:00:46):
to come on Community Connection and share that with us
UH and our listeners. And she is back and read
one thing read always does. She always brings company, and
she brought she brought a good guest today. Yeah from
Texas Roadhouse.

Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
But Rita, thank you so much for being here with us.
Would you like to introduce your guests?

Speaker 16 (01:01:09):
Thank you, Miss Tina. It's always such an honor. I
just I love just being here, even though this is
where I work, There's something different when I'm sitting with you,
and I can put that on the air. You are
just a breath of life and fresh air every single time.
So I appreciate the same, the same.

Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
That's why I say the door is always open for
you so much the same. So you have guests, we
have Miss did Asia Asia. Nice. Welcome, welcome, welcome. So
so tell us a little bit about yourself.

Speaker 11 (01:01:39):
And what you do.

Speaker 15 (01:01:40):
So my name is Diasia. I am the local store
marketer at Texas Roadhouse on Shalan Avenue. My job is
just to go into the community and just market our
great brand and see what our community needs and how
we can feel those needs. So it's really good to
be here.

Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Yeah, it's good to happen you be there.

Speaker 15 (01:01:57):
So I've been at Texas road House for three years now,
but I just stepped into the road this year, so
this is my first year as the marketing manager there.

Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Moving on up, Yes, all right, okay, and we have
a mister Lee on the line for you.

Speaker 16 (01:02:12):
Rita, Hey, mister Lee.

Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
Hey, how you guys doing today?

Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
Good?

Speaker 1 (01:02:18):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
Thank you for calling from so mister Lee, you are
the owner of Indie Popcorn World?

Speaker 11 (01:02:25):
Is that correct?

Speaker 4 (01:02:27):
That is correct?

Speaker 11 (01:02:27):
Man?

Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
Oh, okay, Well, tell us a little bit about that.

Speaker 4 (01:02:31):
Well, we are the world's largest goa popcorn store. We
own over five hundred flavors for popcorn. We have flavor
that other people may not ever have. We've been open
almost three years now, located at thirty seven fifty five
East Raymond Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, and we love to
serve the community. Working with Rita has just been a great,
great opportunity for me.

Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
So how did all three of you all get connected
to Ms Rita and the Hub and all the all
the good things, all all the stuff.

Speaker 16 (01:03:01):
Well, I believe mister Lee. I believe that we met
through Jolie, who is my partner. Yes, okay, So mister
Lee has been around for a while and he comes
to the Resource Fair and he has a booth there
where he has his popcorn, which is definitely amazing. He

(01:03:21):
gifted me a bag last year and almost lost my
mind it was so cold. But he also donated a
bike I believe as well. Wow, or two bikes?

Speaker 4 (01:03:32):
Yes, yes, and my friends from Texas Roadhouse.

Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
Oh so okay, So yeah, so how did how did
you connect with with Miss Rita?

Speaker 15 (01:03:43):
So, like I said, I'm new to this marketing position.
So me and my assistant Felicia, we've just been out
trying to get a good fill of our community and
what we need. So one day, Felicia, she just texted me,
she said, I have a great, a great thing that
we want to be a part of. It just went
from there.

Speaker 5 (01:04:01):
So wow.

Speaker 16 (01:04:03):
Also, so thank you, mister Lee. I appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
It is my pleasure in any time serving our community.
It's the most important thing and we can do it,
especially those who said we served the Lord.

Speaker 16 (01:04:13):
Amen.

Speaker 14 (01:04:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:04:14):
Yeah, So read to go ahead for the for those
who may not be familiar with the Resource Hub the
Resource Foundation, and then tell us about that and then
of course Christmas. Yes, okay.

Speaker 16 (01:04:25):
So the Resource Hub is an organization that I founded
after being sick for quite some time in the hospital
with cancer and being able to to survive something like
that was it was hard, but you know, going through
the cancer treatments and you know, when the doctors gave
me three months to live, I knew that God was

(01:04:47):
going to do something. I didn't know what it was
that he was going to do, but he extended my
life and gave me another chance at life. So I'm
grateful to still be here after spending seven months in
the hospital and a month on life support and bleeding
for my ears, my eyes, my nose, my mouth, my lungs.
I had a trick. They said I would never be
able to talk again, but as you can hear, God

(01:05:09):
had different plans. So when I was in the hospital,
someone did this for me. They got they gave my
kids Christmas, and it was totally unexpected. And so I
vowed that when I got out of the hospital, I
would do the same and pass it forward, pay it forward.
So that's why we are here, and that's why we
exist to help families that have children with any type

(01:05:32):
of disparities. And so we started doing Christmas. This is
our sixteenth year doing the.

Speaker 11 (01:05:40):
Year.

Speaker 16 (01:05:41):
I quit every year, every single year.

Speaker 12 (01:05:43):
Every year.

Speaker 16 (01:05:44):
I quit yesterday actually, and.

Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
Yeah, we'll have you back next year. It's just a lot,
So explain how it all works and who all you help?
I mean, everybody is so deserving, and to be able
to touch so many deserving children and families is just
it's just done. It defies words. I guess I don't know, because.

Speaker 16 (01:06:07):
It just feels great, feels amazing, and I feel like
this is my Christmas gift, you know, just watching the kids,
you know, open gifts and just having a good time.
They get to come to an event center or a
venue wherever we have it, you know, every year, and
and they get get well, they have a gift on
the table, so they think that that's all that they're getting,

(01:06:28):
but they're so excited about that one gift that it
just makes I just really will to tell oh, there's
more of those more, but we can't because we do
know that Santa comes to houses. So sometimes they have
to wait for Santa to bring those gifts, you know,
and if you know children are listening that, you know,
their parents can help, you know, initiate that. But there
are bags that they get to walk out with, and

(01:06:49):
so when Santa comes on Christmas morning, they get to
open the remains what Santa has brought them. So that's
how we do it. We have we have different activities.
They get a catered meal because most of them are
single parent homes and the parents are working two and
three jobs and they can't really afford food number one

(01:07:10):
and they can't afford to be home with their children
to even cook dinner. So most of these children are home,
you know, microwaving things, and so we also put together
food baskets to be able to send home with them
for Christmas break because a lot of them get their
meals from school and that's it. So we have this
year we have a passport system, so they have to

(01:07:31):
complete a fun activity. They have to eat you know,
the catered meal. They have to eat something or at
least go through the food line and do other like raffles,
other little things like that, you know, to be able
to get a passport stamp. And then once they get
five passport stamps and they can bring it to us
and we will give them their gifts.

Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
So when is it going to be inwhere.

Speaker 16 (01:07:54):
It's December the twentieth. It's by registration only, so I
don't give out the venue because I don't want people
to scomping up, but they can go to the website
www dot the Resourcefoundation dot org, the Resource Hub Foundation
dot org. It's first come, first sir. We are at
capacity for the event. But then we have this thing
called the shoppers World. So at seven pm that same day,

(01:08:18):
the families that weren't able to attend the event can
come and they can just do their shopping. So we'll
have thousands of toys just laid out for them to
just go through and do their shopping for their children.

Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
So Texas Roadhouse is a participation. How is it that
you want to let everyone know that Texas Roadhouse cares?

Speaker 15 (01:08:38):
So just listening to her story is just God is
just so good. And we do recognize and understand that
our business will not be where it is today without
the people in our community. So just giving back, it's
just that's something that a lot of people don't realize
about Texas Roaldhouse. We're more than just the restaurant. We
love our community literally. So for the event, we'll be

(01:09:00):
given put pork corn and of course our Texas row
House butter and rolls everybody loves so much. And we're
also going to be giving away free kids mills there
at the event as well, so people can come to
the restaurant and bring their children and get some free
kids mails as well.

Speaker 16 (01:09:21):
So yeah, thank you for that.

Speaker 15 (01:09:23):
Yeah, we we just love to give back and I
love this job. It's so fulfilling because I love to
like just be in a community and like just been
a part of this has been amazing. So I'm just
I'm glad that you allowed us to help you guys
this year.

Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 16 (01:09:40):
And I really love that the black it's the black
community coming together. Yes, as you see, we have black
representation here from Texas Roadhouse, Popcorn World, black owned. We
have fraternities and sororities that have volunteered this year, all black.

Speaker 1 (01:09:55):
You know.

Speaker 16 (01:09:56):
It's just it's amazing to see that we really can
stand together, that we really can come together because a
lot of a lot of the stigma is that we
don't work together. But this is showing you we do
work together and we work together well.

Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
Yeah, and this is a great thing to come together. Yeah,
you know, mister Lee. The popcorn thing. If there is
one particular comfort food people talk about popcorn or I'm
gonna get my popcorn and watch this, I'm gonna get
my popcorn. Popcorn is kind of like pizza. It's kind
of universal because it's something you share, something is a
feel good type of thing as well. So how is

(01:10:31):
it that you hope to impact with what you do
every day?

Speaker 4 (01:10:36):
I look forward to the community. I grew up in
the church and always work in missions, and when I
opened up Popcorn World, I saw the opportunity to work
with people like Rita doing beautiful work that they're doing
for community, especially our Black community as well that really
needs the resources. So in that I meet a lot
of people from the news media and other places, and

(01:10:57):
I know popcorn is a way to open up fundraisers,
which I do have a fundraiser with money churches in
high schools and different places of using them now getting
fifty percent of the product. Since my margins are pretty decent,
I give up to fifty percent of the product. And
then I also make it where they can actually come
in the store and pick up their product instead of
having to mail to them, and or we can have

(01:11:19):
it mail to them that people don't do anything but
sign up. We do all the work from that point on,
and they can always go on my website and they
can find out how to do it. But like I said,
popcorn to me is an avenue to help our community.
And that's why you'll always keep popcorn relevant to something
that's being any help in the community. And that's what

(01:11:41):
I always wanted to be recognized as.

Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
So why popcorn, Yeah, we did popcorn of all things.
I mean, it's not something you hear people going into
business with too often, So what attracted you to popcorn?

Speaker 4 (01:11:56):
You know, I said the same thing. My wife said
the same thing. I used to be it's big concerts,
but when I came to this avenue, it's a good
friend of mine. Twins they had for forty years. It
was them and Garretts and I'm a pop And I know.

Speaker 2 (01:12:10):
How you mentioned Garretts and you got here in the studio.

Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
Well, you know what, it ain't owned by the same
people no more. And it's two weeks before you get
out the line.

Speaker 11 (01:12:21):
So that.

Speaker 4 (01:12:24):
I removed ninety eight percent of the husks from my popcorn.
Nobody has such as banana pudding, peach cobblers.

Speaker 16 (01:12:35):
It's really really good.

Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
Wow.

Speaker 16 (01:12:38):
And I'm not just saying that because we're here.

Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
It's so so so good.

Speaker 4 (01:12:44):
Thirty seven five East Raymond Street. And my my website
is I n d Y popcorn World dot com all
social Indie popcorn World, because Indy is the one that
gave me the opportunity to really open up and and
blow this out of the water. We have the number
one and if you look at you Google and Yelp

(01:13:04):
and see our ratings, it is phenomenal. And I have
eighty five flavors at a time in my store, and
I own five hundred flavors.

Speaker 2 (01:13:13):
Wow, wow, so Indie Popcorn World, yes, ma'am. Okay, and
banana pudding.

Speaker 16 (01:13:23):
If every flavor literally it tastes cheese just like just
like it.

Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
It's crableg.

Speaker 16 (01:13:33):
I didn't have that one crab lake.

Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
How many flavors you say you got, sir?

Speaker 4 (01:13:38):
So it's eighty five at a time at the store.
I changed this my Christmas flavor. This is my pumpkin spice,
my maple bacon. I have kaffy apple with real nuts
in it, real caramel. I have my red velvet cake
with real pecans in it. Uh, we're phenomenal. You really
have to come in. You can try anything you want,
and you would understand why people are blown away their
first time in our store. And you know who we are.

Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
Yeah, well are you done that?

Speaker 4 (01:14:03):
Three?

Speaker 2 (01:14:04):
Yeah, we'll be there. I am done.

Speaker 5 (01:14:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
Tuesday through Saturday, so Monday is not open to day
and oh you closed on Mondays? But Tuesday through Saturday?
Is it just regular business hours?

Speaker 4 (01:14:20):
Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
Twelve to seven, okay, twelve to seven, okay, okay, I
got that, Miss Graham. Where is your store located? Because
we you know you all are giving back or is
it all Texas Roadhouse?

Speaker 15 (01:14:36):
So our location is Shitland. It is fourteen oh five
North Shalaland Avenue over on the east side. That's where
our restaurant is located out. So we also do fundraisers
and stuff as well. So along with this, there's multiple
different ways that we give back.

Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
So so can I ask you a question. You package
your peanuts now and guests are allowed to have as many?

Speaker 11 (01:14:58):
Is it like?

Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
But so what happen and was it COVID it is?
It didn't allow you Remember you used to go in
there and you could eat peanuts and everywhere and everything,
but no more, it has to be packaged.

Speaker 15 (01:15:11):
Yeah, it's packaged now. It's it's just some more of
a sanitory issue, especially with everything going on in the
world today.

Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
We gotta be careful.

Speaker 15 (01:15:19):
So you can still get your peanuts just it comes
in the bag.

Speaker 16 (01:15:22):
But they're still fresh.

Speaker 2 (01:15:23):
They're good, ye, and they're nice in season, nicely done. Yes,
well you have peanuts at the at the.

Speaker 15 (01:15:31):
Yes, we will have the peanuts thors, Yes we will.

Speaker 2 (01:15:35):
Peanuts and popcorn. Yeah, that sounds like what about peanuts
and candy corn?

Speaker 16 (01:15:42):
Do y'all do that or now you know, yeah, it's
the thing, like okay, So well, first, I guess I'm
kind of segue into this because I'm super excited about it.
But Jennifer Thomas and her husband, he's a pastor, their
pastor and first lady here in Indy. So they are
going to be at the event with this business called
Sugar Pop and they have all they have all the

(01:16:04):
old school candies, I mean the fruity's, I mean everything
that you can and they do that the popcorn and
the and the candy corn and it's so good, so good.
But some people do, some people don't. But they have
so many there's not.

Speaker 15 (01:16:20):
I don't know.

Speaker 16 (01:16:21):
That's a good question. That's a good question. IM gonna

organizations that give toys out early, because you know a
lot of them do, but you saved and set back
a certain a map so that the kids will have
something to open up on Christmas Day. I know some
of the parents probably do that, but I think specifically
targeted for Christmas Day. I think that's beautiful.

Speaker 14 (01:19:48):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
That is that's great. That's a great idea because kids,
you know, they liked it, they liked open.

Now and they feeling of the surprise Christmas.

miss Chonelle Pool from glam Ink coming up. We're sticking
with the Christmas thing, but she's got a little bit
of black history that pertaining to women to share with

(01:20:16):
this as well, so we'll have her right after this.
We'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (01:20:22):
Let's get back to the conversation. It's community Connection with
Tina Cosby, brought to you by Child Advocates, a champion
for justice, opportunity and well being for children, on trese
Am thirteen, ten ninety five point one FM.

Speaker 2 (01:20:39):
Studio. Has been busy today, I haven't. I haven't seen
it as busy in one hundred years. It's been a minute,
been a minute. But yeah, Rita has everybody. I told
he's Christmas thing.

Speaker 3 (01:20:51):
That's the popcorn and popcorn.

Speaker 2 (01:20:53):
I gotta try that banana pudding. Pop Have you had it?

Speaker 5 (01:20:57):
You have it?

Speaker 2 (01:20:57):
It's very good, probably really good. Do you have the krabling?

Speaker 3 (01:21:01):
I didn't have that trabling. I didn't know you had
the banana pudding.

Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
I didn't either that. Uh, you know what, I'd be
curious to see what butter tastes like. You know, some
popcorn is supposed to take life. I bet you his
butter is off the chain.

Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
But I've had this popcorn.

Speaker 11 (01:21:19):
It is good.

Speaker 3 (01:21:19):
I had it at an event.

Speaker 2 (01:21:21):
Oh okay, I've.

Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
Heard of his company and it's very good popcorn.

Speaker 2 (01:21:24):
Now okay, well, you know what, Eric, You know I
got to make a stop.

Speaker 10 (01:21:27):
You have to.

Speaker 1 (01:21:28):
I have to.

Speaker 2 (01:21:28):
Indeed, indeed. Well, our next guest has been with us before, uh,
and we're happy to have her back. She is Chanelle Pool.
Chanelle is the executive director of Glam Inc. Does a
lot of tremendous work in the community with our young ladies,
uh and beyond. She is with us now, Miss Pool,
how are you.

Speaker 10 (01:21:49):
I'm doing wonderful. Thank you for having me, Miss Cosby.

Speaker 2 (01:21:52):
Thank you for being here. I mistakenly thought you were
coming into studio, so I told him, I told him
downstairs you were coming. So but I'm glad you called
in because you're right on time, right on time. So
tell us what you got to, what you got going on?
Where you are? Where do you want to start?

Speaker 10 (01:22:07):
Well, I'm excited to share with the community that we
are kicking off another year of fundraising for our new
Legacy Center, formerly known as the Indiana Federation of Colored
Women's Clubhouse.

Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
The Indiana Federation of Colored Women's Clubhouse. Yes, okay, Now
that's the historic building that was built by black women
that is being restored now by black women, or has
been restored well.

Speaker 10 (01:22:39):
Currently GHAM is now the new owner of the property,
and we are definitely reaching out to black women the
community Indiana as a whole to help us with the renovation.
And so we're kicking off a fundraiser to get women,
Black women in particular to invest in the rebuilding in

(01:22:59):
the restaurant of this brand new facility to come.

Speaker 2 (01:23:02):
So tell us about the former the facility as it
was before it was being you know, before it was renovated.

Speaker 10 (01:23:10):
So absolutely. The Indiana Federation of Colored Women, which is
an affiliate of the National Association of Colored Women, was
established back in eighteen hundred eighteen ninety six when the
chapters were established. The Indianapolis Chapter was established in nineteen twelve,
and the Indiana Federation of Colored Women's focus was civic engagement, education,

(01:23:36):
and social uplift for black women for over a century.
Are now ancestor Lillian Thomas Fox, who is also a
journalist of the Hall of Fame of twenty fourteen, who
was an Indianapolis newswriter in Indianapolis Freeman. She was the

(01:23:58):
president who really led the order oranization to focus on
education and social welfare for black weather and leadership. And
so now her daughter, Delanius Thomas, who is our current
president of the Federation, the federation has grown so much.
The members were getting older and they wanted to pass

(01:24:18):
the torch to an organization that was in alignment with
the mission of the Federation, and so GLAM got the
opportunity to be that organization that was carrying that continues
to carry the torch, and so we purchased the property
two years ago with a Community Impact Investment grant from
HUAL Health Foundation.

Speaker 5 (01:24:40):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
So, for those who may not be familiar with GLAM,
can you share with our listeners exactly what GLAM is.

Speaker 11 (01:24:48):
Yes.

Speaker 10 (01:24:48):
GLAM stands for Guidance, Life Skills and Mentoring. We are
a nonprofit that was founded by myself as a sophomore
at Indiana State University back in March of two thousand eight.
We are an evidence based, trauma informed mentoring and life
skills organization that provides services to young girls of color

(01:25:09):
nine through eighteen with free wrap around support services, education
and career opportunities.

Speaker 2 (01:25:16):
Wow. What are the ages of the young ladies that you.

Speaker 10 (01:25:18):
Work with nine through eighteen?

Speaker 1 (01:25:21):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (01:25:22):
And why that particular demographic?

Speaker 10 (01:25:26):
Well, when you think about adolescents and when you think
about the issues that girls start to face, we felt
that it was important and even for myself as a
troubled youth to start early at nine, to start teaching
those basic life skills and start helping them to prepare
for puberty more importantly, which is when we see a

(01:25:47):
lot of those adverse experiences take place. And so we
wanted to be a preventative organization to give them the
skills that they need to help them through the matriculation process,
as they navigate puberty, self esteem, self development, and as
they get into that phase of middle school. We wanted
to make sure that they had the tools that they
need to learn what it takes to be self sufficient

(01:26:10):
starting that age of nine.

Speaker 2 (01:26:12):
So I guess there's a kind of an exclamation point
at the end of glam with going into this house
that holds so much history that you were able to purchase.
I mean, that's just phenomenal, phenomenal.

Speaker 10 (01:26:25):
Yes, yes, we are honored. We originally had our facility
for ten years with the support of Indiana State University Foundation,
who invested one hundred thousand dollars of seed funding when
we first got founded, and so we were operating out
of the pen Arts Building, which is also another historic

(01:26:46):
site off of sixteenth in Pennsylvania, and so we continue
to provide our services there but we outgrown that space,
and so we knew the importance with all the funders
and donors that we had, we wanted to make sure
that their funding was going to sustainability, and we wanted
more importantly is to make sure that our girls had
a permanent safe space. So for five years we looked

(01:27:09):
and worked with the Federation of Colored Women to earn
and raise the fund to be able to purchase that facility.
So it took us five years to get to this
point of being the owners of that property.

Speaker 2 (01:27:21):
Yeah. Yeah, you say here that the Legacy Center sits
on sacred ground. It's more than a building. It is
a living piece of our history, a home created by
the Federation of Colored Women's Clubs who believed in our history,
who believed in the power of Black women and girls
long before the world acknowledged it. So keeping this building

(01:27:45):
going and keeping it up is really, man, I'm just
telling you is It's just a fantastic thing. So where
is it located.

Speaker 10 (01:27:53):
It's located at twenty thirty four North Capital, right next
to Methodist Hospital City, right off the corner of twenty
first and Capital.

Speaker 7 (01:28:01):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (01:28:03):
Yeah, I'm trying to I'm trying to picture it twenty
So when you think of.

Speaker 10 (01:28:08):
The Shells gas station sitting right on first.

Speaker 2 (01:28:11):
Hey, I got that visual.

Speaker 10 (01:28:12):
Yeah, So as soon as you go through the light
on the right hand side, you'll see a beautiful peach
pink colored historic property sitting on the right hand side,
right after the parking lot of.

Speaker 2 (01:28:24):
How you wow the IU that used to be that
au health centered singing majig right there on the corner. Yes, yeah,
oh my goodness.

Speaker 10 (01:28:34):
And so we're the last residential property because even after
twenty first Street, there is no residential property there. It's
all you Health Healthcare district. And so we are the
last remaining not only residential property, but historic site for
black women in the state of Indiana.

Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
I'll bet you a whole lot of folks don't know
much about that, you know, because I had no until
I got this email from you, I had no idea.
And now that you know, I'm going to drive by
there in a few minutes after.

Speaker 4 (01:29:01):
I get out.

Speaker 2 (01:29:02):
Oh please do So what is again, what kind of
programming is it going to be used for?

Speaker 10 (01:29:07):
So that's the unique component of this. We are going
to be establishing a twenty four hour respless care in
temporary housing for at risk girls to address some of
their needs homelessness, trauma, recovery, and transitional care. We're also
going to move the Federation of Color Women back into

(01:29:28):
the property, which is such a blessing with our partnership
that we did not only purchase the property as a
new owner, but we're going to move the members and
the club back into the property after the renovation. We're
also going to utilize it as a central hub for
nonprofits and for profit services that focus on youth support.

(01:29:49):
We will be developing a multi purpose venue hall as
an expansion adjacent to the property that will allow us
to provide a coworking space, leasing space educational partners. So
this will be a space where not only GLAM and
the Federation will reside, but it would also be leasable

(01:30:10):
space for other partners in organizations within the community. And then,
as an organization that has to spend a lot of
time with fundraising, we'll be creating this three story legacy
center with a three sixty rooftop, so not only can
we use it to provide programming and fundraising, but other
entities can utilize and lease the space as well. Wow,
So we want to make sure that we get to

(01:30:32):
contribute a component of it back to the community to
be usable space as well.

Speaker 2 (01:30:37):
So if the community wanted to contribute to the ongoing
restoration and improvement, I guess in addition to this historic place,
how can they do that.

Speaker 10 (01:30:50):
Well, we have several unique ways for the community to
get involved. For the last two years, we have a
special component where you can purchase your own customize legacy
bricks for one thousand dollars. And that is whether you
want to just recognize your own business, your family's legacy,
your name, so that way we can have as an

(01:31:12):
African American site for individuals to come and just see
other business and partners who have helped contribute to the
organization by purchasing their own customized brick. You also can
donate fifteen dollars because we want to make it feasible
for the community as a whole to contribute to this
to just restore a brick, sixty dollars go to support

(01:31:34):
an individual scholar, two hundred and fifty dollars go as
a legacy supporter, thirty dollars go to just to help
light up the house. Because we have basic utilities that
we have to maintain. One hundred dollars go to helping
us to renovate and build out some of these transitional
rooms that the girls will be staying in with your

(01:31:56):
Restless Care room. And five hundred dollars will have you
listed also as a legacy builder throughout the property. And
those are just some of the seven ways individuals can
help support the restoration and redevelopment of this historical site.

Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
What's the target date for when it'll be up and
ready for total use?

Speaker 10 (01:32:17):
With both the renovation to the historic site as well
as the multi purpose venue center that we're adding on,
we're hoping that by December of twenty twenty seven we
can have everything fully renovated and developed. Our goal is
to move back into the historic component of a house
by the end of twenty twenty six with the community

(01:32:39):
help and donor support.

Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
WOW talk about history and local Black history, local Black history,
of women, of our women. That is just again phenomenal.
So again, if people want to get involved, what's the website?
How can they do it? Where can they go?

Speaker 10 (01:33:00):
Yes, our website is www dot Glamindi dot org which
is g L A M I N D Y dot
O RG. You can donate in any capacity through our website.
You also can reach us at three one seven five
zero zero two eight zero zero. We also are recognized

(01:33:24):
on social media Glamindie dot org on Facebook, Glamindie dot
org on Instagram, and also our social media ways to
help and support, and we just really want the community
to know. Madam TJ. Walker and W. E. Dubois also
are collaborators in helping to establish the Indiana Federation of Colorwomen,

(01:33:45):
so to have this unique historic site that so many
legends of our city, grandmothers and mothers used to be
members of the club. So not only is this a
historic site, we have so many legends in this city
who spent times as little girls when their mothers used
to come here and have tea. And we know legends

(01:34:06):
who have been married in this site. We've been supported
by the Indiana Landmark, Missus Eunice Trotter, who actually got
married in the property, Deputy Mayor Jude of Yes. Deputy
Mayor Judeah Thomas' mother was a member of the Indiana
Federation of Colored Women. So the history is very long

(01:34:26):
and extensive, and we just think that it's important for
one for African American women to have a presence in
downtown Indianapolis. Amongst a multi billion dollar healthcare district, we
still get to have our presence represented in the city
of Indianapolis, and that is extremely important. And not only that,
we as women need a safe space to convene, to

(01:34:50):
work and to collaborate as we support our girls, and
this will give us that opportunity with our seven thousand
square foot of historic properties.

Speaker 2 (01:34:59):
Wow, thank you, thank you, thank you for all you're doing,
and please keep us posted on the progress. Can you
do that as we certainly want to keep the community
posted and the website once again real quick before we
have I don't want the computer to take it. Go
ahead and give us your website.

Speaker 10 (01:35:13):
Again www dot g l A M I N D
Y dot O r g ww dot lamindie dot org.

Speaker 2 (01:35:24):
All right, miss Pool, thank you so much for all
you do and we'll have you back shortly, hope, hopefully
you'll have a nice update. We'll keep we'll keep the
community involved and uh an updated. Alrighty, thank you, thank
you so much.

Speaker 10 (01:35:37):
Miscosy.

Speaker 2 (01:35:38):
I appreciate you. And that is all the time we
have for right now.

Speaker 5 (01:35:41):
Eric.

Speaker 2 (01:35:41):
I know you're playing the music. I know you are
I know you are. We'll be back tomorrow.

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
