Thanks so.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
WTOCAM W two three six c are Indianapolis discussing the
issues that matter to you and keeping you informed of
what's happening in and around Indy. It's Community Connection with
Tina Cosby, brought to you by Child Advocates, a champion

(00:27):
AM thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
And good afternoon, and welcome to Community Connection. Today is Thursday.
I do not believe it. I do not believe it. Thursday,
August the fourteenth, three one seven four eight zero thirteen
ten three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten is
the number to the show. The phone lines are open.
We're gonna be open for a little bit on the

(00:51):
show today. Got lots of folks and lots of things
to tell you about local sporting news to share with you.
Of course today with Danny Bridges from the Indianapolis Recorder.
He's going to join us in our second hour. Also
in our second hour, we've been giving away free reserve
seating for the Gospel Music Festival at the Indiana State
Fair on Sunday featuring gospel grade Marvin Sap. We've been

(01:13):
doing that. We did that last week. We've been doing
it all this week. Yesterday we ran out of time,
so guess what were We are going to give away
two sets today, two sets today to make up for yesterday. Plus,
speaking of the Gospel Music Festival, you're going to meet
another outstanding national gospel recording artists who will take the
stage on Sunday along with the Gospel Grade Marvin Sap

(01:38):
And that's going to be in our second hour. You're
going to find out who it is. Rita Green is
going to break it to us. She's bringing the surprise
with us with her to us. So that's going to
be in our second hour as well. Now a little
later this hour, round one thirty or so, the National
Urban League has called for a state of emergency in
its annual State of Black Annual State of Black America Report.

(02:02):
It's the Annual State of Black America Report. The leadership,
the top leadership from the Indianapolserban League, they're going to
be with us to further explain. Again, that's a one
thirty one right now, the lines are open three one
seven for eight zero thirteen ten. Again three one seven
for eight zero thirteen ten. I will I would like

(02:23):
to say a special thank you to everyone yesterday who
shared their experiences about their utility bills and their experiences
with a S. As promised, I did pass those along
to Representative Cherish Prior, and she has since responded and

(02:45):
I'm looking for that email. I was going to read
it to you let you know what she said. I
also say I had okay, here we go. I had
a relative out of state that just said, they, you know,
once in a while they listen, they tune in and
listen to the show to see if I'm still here,
I guess, or see what's going on. And they were

(03:07):
just dumbfounded. They were astounded by the stories that all
of you shared, real those real experiences that you all shared,
and said that they were going to check with their
power company. What it's an aunt in Maryland that called me.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
But.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, it was. It just defied logic, and so much
of it was beyond belief after hearing everybody else's stories,
you know, mine kind of dwarfs some of the other
mountains that you all are going to have to climb
to get those bills in line and to get everything
going again. But I did send as promised, Like I said,
I sent everything to a representative prior yesterday, and she says, Papa, Hi, Tina,

(03:50):
thank you for sharing the information on your show. I
plan to testify at the New Augusta Academy hearing. The
examples are frightening. And the New Augusta Academy hearing starts
at six and that's going to be at on Monday.
What day is Monday, Monday the eighteenth, Monday the eighteenth,
and that's at sixty four to fifty rod Tobar Road,

(04:11):
in case any of you are interested in going. Anyway,
she continues, she says, thank you for also passing along
the information for the lady. Oh no, no, no, no
wait at New Augusta, the New Augusta Academy hearing. The
examples are frightening. And then she says, also for passing
along the information for the lady needing assistance. We're going
to reach out to her, is what she said, but

(04:33):
and I do believe that she will. But anyway, her
statement here in the email that says the examples are frightening,
and that is exactly what they are, because to me,
it's a utility that's running out of control and there's
not a whole lot of controls that can be placed

(04:55):
on them because they're the only one in town. Again,
we were talking about a legal monopoly. That's what's going
on and what has shaped up. So that's kind of
where we are. But anywhere there's going to be four
going to be a series of four public hearings as
well as an opportunity for you to write in if
you can't attend any of the hearings. And again I

(05:16):
want to thank a representative prior for sending that out
and keeping us all informed in her regular weekly newsletter.
But again she's going to be right there with you.
So not only did when you called in and shared
your experiences, she now has your experiences to share when

(05:38):
she goes to the meeting as well as you all
who all can make it, because I think there are
like three or four of you. Maybe that said that
you were going to go over to New Augusta on
the northwest side on Monday. And again, those meetings start
at six o'clock and they will be taking public comment.
So thank you all for doing the hard work and
keep up the good work. Keep up the good work

(06:00):
letting us know what's going on, because that makes a
world of difference. It really, really does. So, as we
were saying, in our second hour, our very own reda
Green is going to be here to give us, you know,
kind of an inside look, you know, break it all down.
Gospel Music Festival, Gospel Day call it. They just call
it Gospel Day at the Indiana State Fair. It's coming

(06:22):
up this Sunday, August seventeenth on the Hoo's Your Lottery
Free stage. And from what David Gray, our Radio one
Indie promotions director, told us, it's going to be back
to back to back to back everybody, and then of
course the great Marvin sat But we wanted listeners because

(06:42):
we of course are proud sponsors of Gospel Day, as
we are every year at the Indiana State Fair, and
we wanted our listeners to be able to enjoy the
day in a very nice reserved area, which is why
we've been giving away reserved seating. So, as I was
saying yesterday, we got real and I you know, I
don't mind that at all, because we wanted to hear

(07:02):
from everyone that wanted to call in. We just simply
ran out of time to give away the tickets. We
have time to give away the tickets. Now we have
time to give away the tickets today. I think we're
gonna give away a set. I'm gonna let you know,
we're gonna give away a set when Rita comes in,
when her interview comes in, and when she brings her
surprise guest. We're gonna give away a set of tickets. Then.

(07:26):
As for the other set, I'm trying to figure out
a good time to do that. Maybe a good time
is now, Okay, why don't we do it now? The
fifth caller, Let's say, caller number five, you win. Caller
number five, you win the first set of tickets for today.
Caller number one, two, three four five, you will win.
Good luck again. These are reserved seats. And if you

(07:50):
heard our Radio one Indie Promotions director David Gray described them,
it's a sweet deal. It's a great deal on Sunday,
you know, certainly right up there with a vop feel
to it. So he strongly recommends you calling trying to
win these tickets. And I'll say again, good luck, caller

(08:11):
number five to the number three one seven four eight
zero thirteen ten. Three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten.
If you are the fifth caller, you will win today.
Those reserve seats A pair, A pair a pair and then,
like I said, a lot of times, I just kind
of spring it on youre like, when I'm gonna do it,
I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna do it again
during the show, And it's going to be in the

(08:32):
two o'clock hour when our guest Rita Green and her
surprise guest come in to talk to us and give
us a closer look at all of the acts and
what you can expect a gospel day at the Indian
and Indiana State Fair. As I was saying, I was
out there for just a short time, I went, well,
day was it one day this weekend? I think it was.

(08:54):
I forgot what day I was out there. Might have
been Saturday, it might have been Sunday. But anyway, just
a short time, and having been there just for a
short amount of time, you got to look in a
field to it. But I will tell you to prepare
for a little I won't say sticker shock, because I
think most of us know when we go to anything
like that, the County Fair, Kentucky Kingdom, or whatever, we

(09:15):
know things are going to be high. It just felt
like this time at the State Fair, things are just
a little bit higher than they normally are. But again
it's the state fair, right, and so it happens once
a year, and so people prepare for it. They prepare
for the long waits and traffic, they prepare for the
long walks, they prepare for the higher prices. But with

(09:39):
all of that said, it's always a good time. Most
people who go always have a good time. And if
you go on Sunday during our Praise Indie sponsored Gospel
Day Gospel music festival, you're got to have an even
greater time, especially if you're the winner. If you become
the winner of the two reserve seats, we're going to

(09:59):
let the fifth whenever they are named. We're going to
give you that, and then we're gonna give you, uh,
We're just going to tell you why we have a caller.
We have a winner. Okay, we do have a winner.
Let me put my glasses on and see, and we're
going to tell you the next chance to win. I'm
going to tell you the next chance to win, and
that is going to be uh, sometime during the two

(10:20):
o'clock hour, right around between two and two thirty. How
about that. I'll give you that range right there between
two and two thirty we're going to give away the
second set today and that makes up for the set
that we ran out of time to give to everyone yesterday.
So winner number one is Laura Henderson. Laura, congratulations, Well,
thank you.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
I am so surprised in my car, I said, well,
let me and I never win. I never went anything.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
You never win anything?

Speaker 4 (10:48):
Yes, you did.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
So. So do you usually go to usually go to
gospel festival?

Speaker 4 (10:55):
I do, but you know, I just sit out in
the general population. You know what I'll call individuals that
don't have tickets. So this would be so exciting.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
So, and you're gonna take with you who.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
I must say, my sister, but yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Yeah, you're on the air now. Don't commit, don't commit
you whatever you say, trust me. Whatever you say on
her folks hold you to it. So you gotta.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Probably heard me too, are my girlfriend?

Speaker 1 (11:26):
And uh, yes, yes, indeed. Well I am so happy
for you and I hope you enjoyed it.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
The one thing we haven't done, Laura is check out
the weather forecast for Sunday.

Speaker 7 (11:38):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
And you know we've had a really, really good run
of great weather at the fair. I mean a couple
of days. It was just hot, but that's to be
expected in August and Indiana. Let me check and see
what the local weather forecast looks like for Sunday. I
don't know, Oh you think so? Have you heard that?

Speaker 4 (12:00):
Yeah, well I thought I heard that, and because it
was going to start to capture the sharp drop down,
but maybe not.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Let's see, Today is Thursday, clear in eighty seven for
a high. Tomorrow is Friday, and it's going to be clear,
ninety one for a high, Saturday clear, ninety two for
a high. Oh my goodness, Sunday clear, and ninety three

(12:33):
for a high. So okay, just prepare for it. That's
all you got to do. Just prepare for it. Dress accordingly.
It doesn't look like there's any rain until Tuesday of
next week, and it doesn't look like a real high.
Doesn't look like a real high percentage there. Now here's
the thing, Laura in Indiana. That's all subjects to change.

(12:56):
We could get a we could get a burst of
rain right now and it not be predicted or what
have you. But this is just a general So it
looks like it's going to be a warm day, should
be a clear day. It's not a little bit cloudy,
but not not too much. But it's going to be.
It's all good, It's all good, all good. So so
you were planning to go anyway, right.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
Well, yeah, we generally do, and you know, sit out
in the I've called the infield. Yeah, so this is
even more excited that we get to move up.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, moving on up? Well they say that, moving on
up indeed. Indeed, all right, Well, congratulations and you and
whoever you take, whoever the lucky person is, I hope
you all are able to enjoy the show. It's going
to be a great one.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Well, thank you so very much.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Thank you. Your luck has changed, has it not?

Speaker 8 (13:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:53):
No, I can't say that up all right, all right,
thank you for coming. You won alright, thank you, Laura?
Are your time? All right? Indeed? And yeah that's uh.
Have you ever Cameron tried to win or try to
call in on a contest? Have you ever tried to
do that?

Speaker 9 (14:13):
No?

Speaker 10 (14:13):
But I will say, my sister kier back when Chris Brown,
this is like pre Rihanna, right, it was like before
all that went down every time radio now because back
in the day, for those of y'all that know your
radio history, one hundred point nine wasn't always hot. He
used to be Radio now right, different company, and they
every time he would come into town or Drake would
come into town, when these guys were at their hottest,

(14:34):
she would always win.

Speaker 9 (14:35):
She would call like in the mornings.

Speaker 10 (14:37):
Before we go to school because she was a year
older than me, and we would get ready for school
in the morning and she would like spam call the
phone lines every morning and she would always win. So
every time Chris Brown or Drake came into town, she
always got free tickets because she just knew how to
keep calling. She's kept calling, kept calling, and she always
got in.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Yeah, you know it is crazy and the I have
a cousin you know since now departed. But he was
telling he's a lot older than I am. But he
was telling me back in the day, and he was
naming some of the old TLC personalities and things and that,
you know when when he said he had two phones, Yeah,

(15:20):
he used two phones and yeah, and he said there
he said, there was nothing in the city that TLC
was giving away tickets to that I did not win.
And I'm like, you are kidding. He said no, he said,
I kid you not because he said I have won
everything there is to win because I know how to
do it. And I'm like, boy, so some people there's
a method to the madness there. You know, some folks

(15:43):
sit around and keep it on a speed dial. You
know how people get in? I have no idea, but
they typically do, they do. I don't think I've ever
tried to win it calling in. I don't know that
I have. Maybe no, no, no, I never have, you know.
I just I just beg the tickets and if I
can't get them, I just go ahead and buy them.

Speaker 10 (16:05):
Like like Danny Bridges would say when I know he
comes on later, he would say, those of us that
are in journalism and media, we just you know, we
use our credentials to get into most things.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Well well yeah you know we know people, Yeah we do.
And here here's the thing though, a lot of people
don't understand too those those credentials you work, you work
for those you still work. I mean you get free admission,
but you're still working. You get free parking. Well that's
so you can work. And Danny is absolutely right because

(16:35):
he was saying that he can't say too much about
ticket prices since he's never paid for a ticket to anything.
And I have to say that, uh, they're even with
just taking a cursory look around the fairgrounds. That was
because I had my media pass and I was looking around,
so I was doing that so that I could come
back and talk on my show. So that was even

(16:56):
a bit of work, you know, even though I just
you know, I got something real quick to eat or
what have you done. Still, I had somebody call me
yesterday though, and they were saying that the food price
they keep getting back to the food prices, and I'm like,
you know what, that's what they are. They just are.
I never really try the exotic stuff, which is why
now I have another friend that that's all they go for.

(17:18):
They go for the newest, craziest thing out there on
the fair food menu and then they eat it. They
do that every year, and I'm like, good for you,
good for you. I can't. I'm not quite that brave,
but so yeah, so yeah, the media credentials this is
a double edged sword. It's nice to get in, yes,
nice to have your parking that's not an issue, yes,

(17:41):
But you know you're still working, you're still working a
little bit. You're not all enjoying everything. So that's how
that goes, So, yeah, Danny's going to be here today.
We haven't really talked much colts with Danny lately, but
I think he's going to talk colts today because isn't
today the last day of training camp I think for
the Indianapolis culture, Yes, I believe so, yeah, the last year.

(18:04):
So I don't know what that does that mean?

Speaker 11 (18:06):
Now?

Speaker 1 (18:06):
When doer the cuts are after? They just have a deadline,
a calendar deadline, not necessarily a camp breaking camp deadline.
Right to my.

Speaker 10 (18:14):
Knowledge, Yes, I'm sure Danny will be more fine and
breaking that down later. But what I was told from
what I've been seeing, they do cuts after the first
preseason game.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
Oh yeah, they can cut, but they I'm looking up
right now to see when the deadline is to have
your roster down to fifty three so they can do it,
you know, or hold on roster deadline. Let's see, that's
twenty twenty four with fifty three rosters. Do this is

(18:51):
twenty twenty four. They have given me fifty three man
roster twenty twenty five. Well, anyway, we'll see NFL fifty three.
They keep saying twenty twenty four. But yeah, and a
lot of people say that's the whole point of the
preseason games. It's not necessarily to see the starters of

(19:13):
the people that have made the team. Is to see
which folks have an opportunity to make the team, you know,
and there are very few slots generally every year, very
very few. So that that's what that's about. But roster,
I think my my phone has gone back two years.

Speaker 12 (19:34):
I don't know what.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Here we go, no to important NFL dates. Here we go,
da da da da da da da da. But Fever
are back in action tomorrow. One of our favorite subjects.
They're back in action tomorrow. Drafted rookie. Let's see second
twenty first to the twenty third. I think it might

(19:55):
be the twenty sixth. I don't know, But anyway, they
might look a little bit. I don't know, but I think,
you know, without sounding sounding fatalistic, I think it's pretty
much as we've said before that way. But there'll be
home tomorrow, right to mine.

Speaker 13 (20:11):
Let me check the schedule.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yeah, I think they'll be at home tomorrow and then
then we'll go from there.

Speaker 10 (20:20):
Well, yeah, I don't know. You don't want to be
morbid about it. It's it's more of an understanding. In reality,
we the Fever have a lot of work to do,
you know, for both wrapping up this season as well
as the off season. But ultimately it's it's what we expect.
They got, they got work to do well.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
I think it was just exciting because I somebody and
I think that this is correct unless I'm missing out
baseball or hockey or something. But the last national championship
that came to the city of Indianapolis was the Indiana Fever?
Was it not? Because the Colts were just before that? Yes,
with the Super Bowl?

Speaker 14 (20:57):
Correct?

Speaker 10 (20:58):
Uh, the twenty twelve Fever, I believe won the championship.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
And the Colts were what twenty six? Yeah, six, that's right.

Speaker 10 (21:07):
They went, they went back, but they lost to New Orleans.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yeah, I think the year before twenty eleven. Yeah, they
made two trips and came out so fifty percent. You know,
that's better than what that. Remember that horrible streak that
the Buffalo Bills had four years.

Speaker 10 (21:21):
And there your Buffalo's done it. There's a couple of
them out there. The Vikings have done.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
It four years in a row. I thought Buffalo had
the record.

Speaker 10 (21:29):
Yeah, I'm saying as far as yeah, the Buffalo Bill
is a more recent one in recent time.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yeah, he said, there's others that have been multiple.

Speaker 10 (21:35):
Time most of the times and came up in basically
where Brides Maje.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (21:38):
Unfortunately, yeah, unfortunately.

Speaker 10 (21:40):
But yeah, the one that comes to mind most in
more recent memory is the Buffalo Bills in the nineties.

Speaker 9 (21:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, that had to be brutal.

Speaker 9 (21:48):
That got hurt. You couldn't get it, not one.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
Not one out of the four.

Speaker 11 (21:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
Yeah, so but but the Colts came back one for one,
you know, yeah, one win, one loss, So they came
out of that pretty So there was there was that,
but so yeah, let me see what else we had again.
I want to thank everyone for calling in about their
AES nightmares, because it is nightmarish when.

Speaker 8 (22:12):
You have that.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
I forgot to ask you, Cameron, did you have any
Do you have any issues with your power Power Bill? No?

Speaker 10 (22:20):
I just I just know that when AS first switched
over from i PL, I saw the price spike up.

Speaker 9 (22:26):
Yes I did.

Speaker 15 (22:27):
I did.

Speaker 10 (22:28):
I did witness that because that was one of my
one of my first apartments after college. When they made
that crossover business wide transfer power over to AS, and
I definitely saw the price spike up.

Speaker 9 (22:41):
So that was some you know, some years ago.

Speaker 10 (22:44):
So I mean those of us have kind of adapted
to it and got used to it to a degree,
but I haven't seen now compared to some of the
calls we got yesterday and some of the astronomical amounts
that I was blessed to not have anything like that occur.
But I do understand, like whether it be late fees
or discannet reconnect visa, you move into a new address,
you got to pay a deposit and little things like that,

(23:06):
but nothing, nothing to the extent of what some of
the callers had yesterday. I feel for them because I
haven't experienced that that severity. But price hike, price bikes, yeah.

Speaker 16 (23:15):
I have.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Well, you know, I think I've told this story before.
I was getting my house the trim on my house painted,
and they were switching over my box from uh IPL
to AES and I'll never forget the guy, the painter.
Uh he looked at me, and the smile he said
mis coused me. He said, you're getting ready your electric

(23:37):
bills getting ready to go up. I said, huh, I
said what he said, because you're gonna pay for that
box they just put in there, and I said, oh no,
you know naively as I tend to be. I said,
oh no, no, I said, I asked the guy, and
he told me it was going to make it more
efficient because they're newer and this and that. He said,
ah huhkle. He said, go ahead and believe them. Go
ahead and believe that. And I kind of thought about it,

(23:58):
and he was spot on, because the very well I
would see. I gave it two months. Two months later
it made an un unthinkable jump for what I didn't
understand that, and then it kind of leveled out, but
it never did go back down to where it once
was with the meta readers. But they know they don't
have folks walking in your yards and remember the well

(24:21):
you probably wouldn't remember because you're probably too young, but.

Speaker 17 (24:26):
I've heard about it.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
You know, have you ever seen anybody do it? They
walk faster than anybody I've ever seen them on life.
And they got this little well most recently they had
this handheld computer. Uh, they used to have a little
notebook when I was younger. Because and then when they
checked the water, those what are those those great big
oh my goodness, what are they? Uh, they're they're circular

(24:51):
heavy metal lids that go that that cap whatever this
underground water thing is, and they they take those off off.
They got this great big bolt or nut or whatever
on top, and they take those off and look down
beneath and check your water and stuff and make sure
that's okay. And then they'd walk around to the side
of your house and check your gas and power meter.

(25:13):
So yeah, Anyway, as I was saying, we still have
coming up three one, seven, four, eight, zero, thirteen ten,

And we're back with Community Connection. As you may have heard,
the National Urban League declared a state of emergency and
its most recent National State of Black America report released
last month. As a result, all ninety two of the
Urban League's national affiliate agencies are banding together to answer
the call. One such affiliate is our very own Indianapolis

(31:36):
Urban League. Here with us now are Indianapolis Urban League
President and CEO Tony Mason and Indianapolis Surban League Director
of Advocacy, Mark Russell. Tony Mark, Welcome back, Welcome back.
It's been a while since you both have been here,
So glad to have you with us.

Speaker 11 (31:50):
Oh no, thank Latina for having us.

Speaker 1 (31:53):
Oh yeah, yeah, so go ahead, go ahead, Mark, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
Bless you. Thank you for giving us one. This is
an extremely important and hair raising report, so we're glad
for this opportunity to share it with you and the audience.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
Yeah. One of the lines from the report, we issue
a clear and urgent warning our democracy, civil rights, and
hard won progress are under attack. So where do we
go from here? And what is that going to look like? Locally,
you know, locally as opposed to nationally, because locally is
where we are. But if you all want to start

(32:34):
with the report, we can do that as well. You know,
I can ask that question after if you want to
just summarize the report for our listeners.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Well, again, this is Mark. I'm sorry. This is the
actually the forty ninth edition of the State of Black America.
And I've been involved with the urban leagues since I
was twelve or thirty when I was in port Wayan,

(33:04):
But I cannot recall in.

Speaker 16 (33:05):
My memory an emergency report being issued in the history
of the modern urbanly, So that should tell you, uh,
the severity and depth of the issue that we face
in terms of what we're doing locally, We're always looking
for opportunities to expand on our message and mission of equality.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
We will continue to do that in the all forms,
and we will continue our efforts in the Indiana General Assembly.
We are already trying to prepare an agenda and are
working with state officials, particularly in the area of education.

Speaker 11 (33:55):
Yeah, yeah, then I might I might add, just to
be clear to the unity, one of the things that
we have not done is we have not changed our
mission statement. We have not eliminated words such as equality, equity, diversity,
and inclusion from the work that we do. You know,

(34:15):
each and every day we are providing programs and services
all with the goal of trying to make sure that
we impact people economically, that we move them towards self
sufficiency as well as prosperity, and we do that through
workforce initiatives, through our entrepreneurship programs.

Speaker 8 (34:33):
Education.

Speaker 11 (34:35):
We also know that you've got to take care of
the well being of the person, and we do that
through our health and wellness initiatives. And as Mark said,
from an advocacy and legislative policy standpoint, you know, we
partner with the African American Coalition of Indianapolis and several
coalitions to address issues around equity and the challenges that

(34:58):
we're seeing. And you know, sad, we've got a state
legislature that is fully, fully engaged and bought in to
the policies and the efforts that are coming out of
this White House.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
So no, go ahead, Please don't, okay.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
I just wanted to add to what Tony said. He
excellently summarized our work. There is a quote in the
middle of the report from Mark Morial, the National Urban
League President, and I thought quite appropriate. I just want
to share. It is short. He says, the work is difficult,

(35:39):
the road is long. But we know from experience that
the arc of history does not bend towards justice on
its own. It must be bent by those with the
strength and will to see it through. And all ninety
two of our affiliates are doing this. We're trying to

(35:59):
be on the road to help bending that arc, and
we're exhibiting our strength and endurance for our mission of equality.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Tony or Mark, either or both of you can answer
this question. Do you think that our communities are a
little bit I don't know to use an athletic out
of shape in terms of knowing how to forcefully bend
that arc back and how to do it in the
right most effective way, because it seems like people are

(36:32):
frustrated and they want something different, but they simply just
don't quite know how or what to do.

Speaker 11 (36:43):
I wouldn't say this, I know that there are some
out there that would say that they don't know what
to do or how to go about doing it. But
we have a lot of people in this community that
are engaged in advocacy and legislative policy work. There's no
shortage of agement, whether you're working with the African American
Coalition US or the Black Legislative Caucus, and so there

(37:08):
are a number of ways for people to get involved.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
In to engage.

Speaker 11 (37:12):
I think we need more people, that's the issue, more
people involved getting involved in advocacy work, and we're needing
more people to vote.

Speaker 3 (37:22):
I mean, the bottom line is is.

Speaker 11 (37:26):
Everything's happening to us right now. Was made very clear
during the campaign process that this is what was going
to happen, and so yes, we collectively and individually have
some ownership, and so we know we have to do better,
and as an organization, we have to do better about

(37:48):
engaging more people in our work and making sure that
we play a part is conveners and pulling everyone together
as well.

Speaker 1 (37:57):
Yeah, and I guess that's what I was referencing in
terms of being kind of out of shape, you know,
like with advocacy, the importance of staying with that line
of defense of voting the importance of staying with that
line of defense. And as you have said, too many
of us sat it out, didn't think twice about it

(38:18):
and kind of waved it off, like yeah, that's what
they all say, or what have you. And like you said,
it was made very very clear. It was written down.
I'll never forget I see this all the time when
Kamala Harris was here in Indianapolis speaking to the convention,
and she said, can you believe they wrote that down?

(38:38):
I mean, that's how brazen this so called takeover at
taking this country back is and has been. And even
with them writing it down, you know, in black and white,
there was still a certain amount of I don't know,
you know what I mean. It's just she sounded the
alarm when she was here.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
Community does need to strengthen its efforts. Mister Mason indicated
the Indianapolis Urbanly have works actively with various coalitions, including
the African American Coalition of Indianapolis, multi faith organizations such

(39:24):
as those headed by Rabbi Aaron Spiegel, who has been
a great ally for us. We work with the university community,
particularly IU and It's Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses on issues
affecting equity at the university and community level. But there

(39:50):
is a role. There are things that need to be
done that our community can do. One and I think
it's the most important part of this report is that
we must address the inequity in digital media. The bias

(40:11):
and outright hatred that has been allowed on platforms such
as Facebook and other.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
Media channels has to be challenged.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
And we have to do that. We need the work
of I'm not an expert in digital media, but there
are definitely people out there that are, and we need
to be aggressive. We need to fight back on this
and continue doing our services. So the Urban League has
always been in somewhat of a precarious position because we

(40:53):
continue to push forward equality regardless of what the atmosphere is,
and that's part of our job. Is difficult work, and
the community has to be there to assist us. So
in terms of digital media, we need definitely have to
be more diligent and not just sit back and let

(41:16):
these attacks occur without response.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
So what were your reactions when the State of Black
America report came out and the declaration of the state
of emergency. I mean, we're you said, Mark, in all
your years, you've never seen anything like that. But what
you know, how did you internalize it? What did you
think when you saw that it had been declared?

Speaker 3 (41:39):
Yeah, well, frankly, it's sobering teen it all the work
that we've done collectively as a group, and I'm not
speaking just of the Indianapolis Urban League or the network
of urban leagues across the country. Yeah, but all the
work that we've done as a people and as a

(42:00):
unity is being jeopardized. When I was born in nineteen
sixty four, there was no such thing as the Voting
Rights Act, and now it is being challenged to the
point that a decision pending in the US Supreme Court
on voting rights in the state of Louisiana is going

(42:26):
to decide whether or not voting rights will exist at all.
So having grown up being a head start kid and
benefiting from the Great Society and now here I'm almost
a full.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
Senior, sixty four more than what sixty four? Almost, Yeah,
I'm almost.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
But having lived that, think of that as a testament
in a short life that you went from the emergence
of people recognizing the damaging and lasting effects of discrimination
and racism to now in this era where people say

(43:15):
we're interested in fairness and being colorblind. Since when you know,
we have to call out these issues. So that that
was my initial reaction. My reaction now is that we
need principle but urgent efforts to address these issues and

(43:37):
to gather even more allies from our foreign speaking communities.
So that's going to be inclusive of anyone citizen or
not that wishes to speak out. We need, we need
that participation to be increased, We need that partnership to

(43:57):
be increased, and we have to recognize the wide scope
of what civil rights are. You know, it's about civil
rights in I'm glad this report came out because it
details so well the extent of our peril and that

(44:24):
we must respond. Martin Luther King said we were in
the era of guided missiles and misguided men, and we
have to do our work and we need the community's
help and do anything.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
So what do you think has made attacks on DEI,
negating DEI for the most part, wiping it away, which
was also written down in Project twenty twenty five. In fact,
I think that's the framework for the whole thing, attacking
civil rights and voting rights, attacking all that. What happened
that made so much of that in vogue for the

(45:02):
ruling parties that they have to get rid of all
of that? I mean, is there anything we can point to,
any any research that the Urban League has that that
maybe we, you know, for future reference, we can make
sure that that doesn't happen again. I don't know. Or
is it just a societal trend that maybe this is
what part of society has always wanted and they've manipulated

(45:23):
things to get their way. I'm not really sure.

Speaker 11 (45:27):
I mean, no, I was going to share that, you know,
Mark mentioned earlier in terms of social media on various platforms,
But it's it's no secret that, you know, white supremacy
in that entire movement of anything at once, it went underground,

(45:50):
but it never went away.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
Okay, So those feelings have.

Speaker 11 (45:53):
Always existed, and now with social media platforms and different outlets.
You've got and and all right, echo chamber, you've got
far right media amplication, and and and you see these
legal challenges now where essentially ent of these are standing

(46:15):
laws on their head, using them to fight back against
the very laws that are created opportunities and access frankly,
not just for raft Americans, but for women and all
other marginalized marginalized groups. And so you see a number
of cases that have impacted everything from the voting rights

(46:38):
to you name it. And so we know that we've
got a lot to We've got a lot of fight
ahead of us.

Speaker 26 (46:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (46:45):
Indeed, we have with us the Indianapolis Urban League, and
they're breaking down in a lot of different ways. The
National Urban League State of Black America Report, which declared
a state of emergency UH three for eight zero thirteen ten.
We're also hearing about how not only this chapter, this
this affiliate of the National Urban League, the Indianapols Urban League,

(47:07):
and more than ninety others are are going to answer
the call to action and and things that we can
start to look for and things that we can start
to participate in. Uh, mister Russell, you have a question
for our Indian apoleserban league, go ahead? How are you
just fine?

Speaker 8 (47:23):
I didn't so much have a question. I just wanted
to point out a couple of things. I don't know
if you saw the the cole Byers guests hosting Jimmy
Kimmel last night, but I did not know she had
a secret cause do you have a black friend? It

(47:48):
was funny, but it was it was apropos in a
lot of ways. And it was she has three basically
Caucasian guys and Tim was interviewing them, and she had
a guy from the black community, uh also, But any
it was it was quite interesting, but none of them

(48:09):
had a black friend, and she she was went into
interviewing them about why and this and that. So but anyway,
she's quite she's quite a talented guest host. And you
might took her out tonight. You probably have something on
tonight also. But also I don't know if you know,

(48:31):
but the State Fair queen this year. Have you have
you met her? I have not, or she she is
it looks to be of African Americans, and I don't
know if she is, but she seems to have a
lot of personality and don't know if maybe it might
be too late for this year's very but it was

(48:53):
great if you could maybe interview her in some kind
of way before, maybe by tomorrow or something. But anyway,
those are some things that that look promising in terms
of the racial situation. The ever think I would try
to mention is that the United States will be celebrating

(49:15):
two hundred and fifty years of existence next year, and
compared to a lot of countries, we are very young
in terms of that, and we're we're really in an
experiment in trying to bring together all kinds of people.
You know, one of our slogan is this eplobus union,

(49:38):
which is that for out of many, one Now there's
some people that want to be the one. I won't
mention any names, but they currently occupied the White House
like real But anyway, they're not the one, and I
don't think that's what what was meant when they came
up with the slogan. But anyway, Uh, we're trying to

(50:00):
deal with various situations in the world, various peoples, and
this is not easy. It takes work. You gotta you
gotta put in the work. And we're dealing with a
segment a lot of times that is against this experiment.
They don't want people to write a merry go around,

(50:22):
so to speak. They want to still write and write
it to your child where someone is up and someone
is down, and they want to be the ones that
are up, you know what I mean. So I think
there's a lot of things that go into this, but
I don't think we should should uh uh, you just
find it. I think that there's a way to do it,

(50:45):
but you got.

Speaker 1 (50:45):
To put the work in to do it, all right,
mister Russell, thank you and and uh, Tony and Mark.
That's that's a real thing. People feeling despondent, heavy, tired,
frustrated and all those things, and so keeping them, keeping
the masses encouraged, uh and fighting back is is a
little bit of a task, a lot of a task.

Speaker 11 (51:07):
Actually, No, no, absolutely, But I think one of the
things that we all have to remember, uh that what's
that thing there's nothing new under the sun. That's our
Our parents, our grandparents, our great grandparents experience a lot

(51:28):
of this, uh and at a time when it was
even far more extreme than perhaps what we're seeing happen
right now. Yes, and so we know that we have
the ability to overcome this, but it will take all
of us leaning in and doing the work together and
being unified and going about it. It would be very
easy to blame one you know, blame one person or

(51:51):
an organization there, but we we all have to lean
in because the attack on us and our rights, uh,
either the well coordinated attack.

Speaker 1 (52:03):
Absolutely, it's been written down. I keep saying it. They
wrote it down for all to seek. Yeah, yeah, very coordinated.

Speaker 3 (52:11):
Yeah yeah, I was just going to add the h
There are opportunities for us to take advantage of those
people that are committed and gifted in our community or
just in fact just concerned. At the Indianapolis urbanly, for example,
we have a group of young black professionals called the Exchange,

(52:34):
and they too are active in advocacy there allowed them
are entrepreneurs and self comployed, and there's always an opportunity
for people to join. Now, that target age for that
group is twenty two to forty roughly, and that's the

(52:55):
people that we need. We need emerging leaders, We need
to encourage leadership. The despondency aspect I can very well
relate to. But you know, when you're on the ground, yeah,
your view is quite different than when you're vertical and
standing up. Yeah, so we want people to stand up

(53:17):
and see what's around them and not lay on that ground,
not to well on that ground, but to keeople on
going is totally indicated. This is not a new challenge.
I know our time is short here for about five minutes,
I think we have left with you. But these issues
are compounding.

Speaker 1 (53:38):
For e they are.

Speaker 3 (53:40):
For example, the Labor Department data shows that more than
three hundred thousand Black women lost their jobs in the
half first half of twenty twenty five. Let me repeat
that three hundred thousand black women lost their jobs in
the first half of twenty twenty illustration and economists say

(54:02):
the you know, this increase in unemployment. Black unemployment has
always been the canary in the coal mine. You know,
we get hit first, and we get hit hard. And
that's already happening now.

Speaker 1 (54:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (54:19):
There was an unemployment reach for Black Americans hit seven
point two per seven yeah. Yeah, and the unemployment rate
across the country was four point two. So, and we're
often in the jobs that are being targeted for elimination,
and for example by DOGE, the so called government efficiency.

(54:44):
Ever at the federal level, you know, they they emaciated.
They almost completely eliminated the Office of Civil Rights. Yeah,
at the Department of Education and that justice that we're
eight months into an administration.

Speaker 1 (55:01):
Yeah, they're moving with the swiftness.

Speaker 16 (55:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (55:04):
The swiftness with which they're moving is alarming to me
because they they know they have to act quickly. Uh,
if they're going to just take a sledgehammer to everything
and break it down, you know, break it all up.
So I don't know that we can all keep up,
keep keep track and keep up with it.

Speaker 12 (55:21):
But we have to.

Speaker 1 (55:22):
We absolutely have to.

Speaker 3 (55:23):
That's what we're here for. That's what the end of
a c P is here for. Some people grew up
with the illusion that all things became equal with the
signing of a document on five pen That did not happen.
That has never happened. It always requires work, hard work,

(55:45):
draining work, and the support and activity of the community.
We cannot be alone in these efforts, so we strive
to expand our partnerships, whether it be with religious organization
academics who are very helpful in finding a research based

(56:07):
answer to society's problems, not just rhetorical and in terms
of what drives this. We have to admit that hate
has always been around and always will be around. This
administration's primary efforts to date have targeted people of color

(56:31):
that they say are criminal just by the very existence
and presence in the United States. Absolutely, and it's a
lucrative industry. Somebody has to feel that thousand bed prison
north of the Indianapolis here, and they're going to be

(56:53):
making money for it, a lot of money private prison
operators most likely. So you have to keep these things
in mind. Sometimes racism can be quite profitable.

Speaker 1 (57:05):
Oh yeah, sure, indeed, So Tony and Mark, before we
have to let you go, what is it that you
want to tell our community about this state of emergency?
What can they you know, what's it going to look
like here in Indianapolis? And how can we help? How
can people help?

Speaker 11 (57:22):
We want to tell people first and foremost get involved,
whether you get involved with the Urban League, ANDAACP, Concern Clergy,
the Exchange, which Mark mentioned earlier, are our young professionals
auxiliary and by the way, Tina, they were voted the
top Young Professionals Auxiliary in the National Urban League movement

(57:44):
this year.

Speaker 1 (57:44):
Well, congratulations, that's fantastic.

Speaker 11 (57:47):
Yes, and Kelly Do said its leader Shei's the top
president of a YP affiliate, so they're doing great work.
People have to engage now in advocacy and in legislative
policy see work because in many instances we're missing and
if we're not participating that our voices are not being heard.

(58:09):
We have to vote, we have to get involved. Yes,
there are challenges that are happening right now, and things
are probably going to get tougher before they get better,
but we have to continue to fight.

Speaker 9 (58:20):
We have to be committed to.

Speaker 1 (58:22):
That, have that mindset. Absolutely, we need that precedence.

Speaker 3 (58:25):
I know we're at the bit irritantd but I've been
doing legislative work and working with the legislature since I
was in the governor's office in nineteen eighty six, and
some things don't change when legislators are there and they're
predominantly white, predominantly male, when they see people of color

(58:49):
a lot of them, they get worried, they show their concern.
We need to make our presence so regular that that
does not happen, and which also says we need more
of us down there.

Speaker 11 (59:03):
One thing I'd like to add to Tina, because I
know we have to go there's getting involved, but then
there's also supporting key organizations and entities in the community
that are doing this work. Most of us are facing
significant funding cuts because of the attack.

Speaker 1 (59:20):
Yeah, good point, point, yes, and.

Speaker 11 (59:23):
So we've got to become more philanthropic individually, understanding that
you may only can afford to donate a dollar or two,
but that dollar or two will make a difference.

Speaker 3 (59:34):
And if you.

Speaker 11 (59:34):
Imagine the impact that, you know, what our three hundred
or four hundred thousand African Americans could have and supporting
organizations that are fighting this fight, it could be huge.
But we're going to have to do those things now.
We have to be the cavalry. No one is coming
to save us exactly.

Speaker 1 (59:52):
Hey, and Tony and Mark, if there's anything you ever
need from from us, let me know. The door is
always open and the mic is always open to both
the because we all have to support each other. And
you certainly have our support, you know with this station,
the station, groove, the show. So just let us know
and we'll take care of whatever it is you need.

Speaker 3 (01:00:11):
So we appreciate that partnership. Dan It bless you and
Radio one.

Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
Yeah, well, thank you, thank you very much, and we'll
stay in touch, Okay, and the like I said, anytime,
just give me a call and we can we can
work you in. Thank you all right, thank you, and
we'll be back with more community connection. Gospel Day, Gospel
Music Day, Gospel Music Festival at the Indiana State Fair
that's coming up. We'll be right back.

Speaker 26 (01:00:40):
I can't believe I'll spotless my floors look after using
the Swiffer power Mop. No more dragging around a heavy
mop and messy bucket. Now I get the same deep
clean without all the work, thanks to the powerful solution
and scrubbing pat of the Swiffer power Mop. Dirt and

Welcome back to Community Connection. We're heading in to our
second hour. All last week and all this week, we
have been telling you, sharing with you about the upcoming
gospel music Festival at the Indiana State Fair this Sunday,
of which Praise Indy is a proud sponsor, and we've
been giving away free tickets to a very very lucky

(01:08:19):
group of folks who can sit in the reserve section.
We're still going to do that probably and not too
long from now, so stay tuned here now with more
on what's ahead, is our very own Rita Green, who
has a surprise guest of or two, one, two, maybe three,
I don't know. I let Red to take care of that,
to fill in all of the blanks because we are
so excited about Gospel Day at the Fair, the gospel

(01:08:40):
music festival, and it truly is a festival in every
sense of the word. Rito, welcome back. We love having
you on the show.

Speaker 13 (01:08:47):
What's going on, miss Tina? I appreciate you having me.
I am so excited Sunday we're like a few days away.

Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
Yeah, yeah, it's coming.

Speaker 8 (01:08:54):
Oh my god.

Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
I was looking at the weather forecast, and it's gradually,
you know, it's getting one degree warmer each day between
now and Sunday. Did you notice that I did.

Speaker 13 (01:09:06):
It was supposed to be eighty three when I first
checked the weather forecast, so I was like, okay, it's manageable.
And then I checked last week and it said ninety.

Speaker 1 (01:09:14):
So I'm like, it's just I think we would be
responsible though, to let everybody know, although they probably already do,
but stay hydrated, you know, dressed for it, prepare for it.
You can still enjoy yourself in ninety degree weather. Just
make sure that you do come fare, Yeah, come prepared.
You take care of all the safety for Coddon.

Speaker 13 (01:09:34):
Absolutely, And we do have a cooling bus, and then
we also have a building where people can go in
that's air conditioned as well, so if they need a break,
they can step into the air for a few minutes
as well.

Speaker 11 (01:09:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:09:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
And the other thing that I want to make sure
people know, which we all know here being from Indiana,
that could change. It can change, and it does.

Speaker 13 (01:09:52):
Last year it was supposed to be ninety two and
it dropped down to seventy nine. Eighties Oh yeah, good good, And.

Speaker 1 (01:09:59):
No rain there's not just be any rain until sometime
next week, right, But so anyway, keep paying attention to
the weather because we want everybody to have a good
time and just just work with it, work with the weather,
whatever it's gonna be.

Speaker 12 (01:10:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:10:10):
So, Rida, you brought comedy. Rita always brings up. She
always brings a guest, which I dearly love. We got
a couple on the line. We've got one here in studios,
So go ahead and share your guest with us.

Speaker 13 (01:10:20):
Okay, So I'd like to welcome Listen, everybody knows who
this person is. Everybody knows he's so prevalent in the community.
An amazing pastor, one of my favorite speakers of all time,
Reverend Chauncey Brown. He is an all star MC for
the Indiana State Fair Gospel Day, and I just I
can't tell you thank you enough for how you have
shown up for me, for the Gospel Day, for the

(01:10:41):
whole community at large. But he is here with us,
and on the phone. We also have Melvin Crispell. I
think it's Crispal the way he said it in his video,
said Crispel, and I said Chrispell, So help me out, Melvin.
And then Andy who is a guest artist this year,
Andy Ramersa. So, yeah, we have a packed house today.

Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Yeah, we do. So the uh okay, somebody was taking
was it?

Speaker 33 (01:11:06):
Was it?

Speaker 34 (01:11:08):
Hey, everybody, I was waiting on the chance of dump in.

Speaker 36 (01:11:13):
It's Melvin Chris Bell.

Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
It's nice to be here.

Speaker 1 (01:11:16):
Oh, it's wonderful to have you. Are you? Are you?
Are you psyched? You ready to get going on Sunday
regardless of the weather.

Speaker 36 (01:11:22):
I am super super excited.

Speaker 34 (01:11:24):
Now I'm just frighting out that it's gonna be ninety.

Speaker 36 (01:11:28):
I gotta little things around, but I'm super super excited.

Speaker 3 (01:11:31):
I can't wait to be with you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
Yeah, we can't wait to And you have a you
have a fairly new release, right, Yes, My.

Speaker 36 (01:11:38):
Brand new single, Reason to Dance just came out a
few weeks ago, available on all digital outlets. And I
hope you all downloaded streaming purchased it, and I really
hope you get up and dance and enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (01:11:49):
Okay, so give us We're gonna play it in just
a few minutes. I'm gonna let read a call for it.
But give us a look, you know, can you tell
us the background and you know the backstory about this
this particular production.

Speaker 36 (01:11:59):
Yeah, so I'm definitely working on some new music you know,
coming soon.

Speaker 3 (01:12:03):
You know, we got we got a little way to go.

Speaker 36 (01:12:05):
But in preparation for that, I'm like, you know, what
is something that we can release now that could be
you know, a really good, you know song to just
put out there for people to enjoy. And I got
together with one of my brothers. His name is Anthony Brown, uh,
and he had an idea of this song that he
put together and I took a listen to it, and
I was like, this is actually amazing. This is something

(01:12:26):
super new for me, a different feel from what you know,
my traditionals sound. But let's let's take a stab at
it and see what we can do. And that is
how reason the dance came about. And I'm super excited
to share that message of hope and even a testimony
of how good God's been to me. And if he
can do all these things for me, I know he
can do all these things for you.

Speaker 1 (01:12:44):
All right, Uh, Rita, are we gonna are we gonna
get to hear it?

Speaker 13 (01:12:47):
Yeah, let's let's let's take a listen to it, Melvin,
because I know you are a problem. First of all, listen,
I'm just scrolling through YouTube and hearing some of these clips.
You ain't about to take me out? Okay, you coming,
you behave.

Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
Let's take a listen.

Speaker 27 (01:13:18):
I have seen some mountains yearling, I have seen somebodies.

Speaker 9 (01:13:22):
Ye shy to not be on my base. But when
I take a look back at my life, I take
my family.

Speaker 6 (01:13:30):
It's a miracle and even say, oh Jesus to me,
thanks so prayful. When I think about.

Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
Listen to awe aw aw, Okay, there's a little bit
of it. They're just a little teased, just a taste.
So what when you hear that? What goes through your mind?

Speaker 36 (01:14:11):
Well, you know, I'm not really the biggest dancer, but
it makes me want to get up and dance. You know,
we have so many reasons to complain and the things
that are going on in this world, but we also
have that many reasons to dance, to get up and celebrate,
to be joyful about, you know, all the things that
God is doing in our lives. You know, even though
all these things are going on, God is still in
control of everything that we have going on. So if

(01:14:33):
we continue to trust him, we know we are in
the right path. Nothing can stop us, nothing can shake us,
because we have Him on our side.

Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
Indeed, indeed, I am so excited about you being here.
We're also excited about Andy being there, right, and.

Speaker 13 (01:14:46):
I'm excited about both of them being there. And I
just want to let everybody know that you have to
be there by four o'clock or else you will miss
Melvin and you will be mad at me. But I'm
trying to tell you now, don't sans be there at
four o'clock so that you can see him. But yes, Andy, welcome.
I'm so grateful that you're a part this year. This
is your first year being a part of the Gospel

(01:15:08):
Day at the Indiana State Fair. How are you feeling
about that?

Speaker 34 (01:15:12):
Hello?

Speaker 19 (01:15:13):
Everyone, can you hear me? Okay, yep, awesome, man, I'm
really excited. Thank you guys so much for having me
on the show. I'm really looking forward to Sunday. I
know it's going to be hot, but I'm really really
just to be a part of what God is doing
this weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:15:29):
What is it that you want to bring to the show, Andy,
this being your first year as well, Yeah, yeah, I
think so.

Speaker 19 (01:15:37):
I'm a Christian hip hop artist, so I'm going to
bring a little bit of a different flavor. I'm going
to bring some more beats and instrumentals and lyricism to it.
And so I think I can present something that's gonna
be fun, that's going to be glorifying to God. But
I think it's also going to be entertaining and inviting
for people to get up and praise, like my brother
was just talking about, and to just have a good time.

Speaker 1 (01:16:00):
Yeah indeed, indeed. Uh And and as you said, it's
it's gonna be hot. But you know what, once everything
gets going, the music and and everything starts moving, people
will forget about that.

Speaker 10 (01:16:10):
He will.

Speaker 13 (01:16:11):
And we have such an amazing lineup this year. We
have a lot of new elements. Still keeping with the
same old things that the you know, the crowds of
regulars that attend, you know, love, but we have a
lot of new elements. So I'm excited to have the
hip hop peas, and then we have a gospel comedian
and some other things that yeah, yeah, and then our
lineup of All Star MC's they carry the show and

(01:16:32):
so they just make it amazing. Chauncey, He's one that
just knows how to make the crowd, move and keep
everybody entertained. And so I love I love that aspect.

Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
He looks so quiet and shine. Now he's mom Now
I heard, I heard so talk to us.

Speaker 37 (01:16:52):
Indeed, so glad, so glad to be here home Indianapolis
with Ms. Tina Cosby and the reader Green.

Speaker 9 (01:17:01):
You have to be here.

Speaker 37 (01:17:03):
It's amazing the amount of worship that goes into this moment.
It is my belief that worship is resistance to worry
with all that we're facing in society, all of the
politics and things happening too and on us. This is
a space for us to come together as a community,

(01:17:24):
not only as a community, but in this park at
the Fair. You can have your individual worship and you
can get what you need from God. If you need
gospel rap, we got it. If you need choirs, you
got it. You need worship ballots, we've got it. You
need to laugh, we've got it. And y'all the m

(01:17:46):
from the MC's to the gospel comedians, this is just
something you don't want to miss. And I can't say
it enough. Melvin Crispell, the third Bishop Marvin Sad There's
not too many gospel concerts that have two headliners that

(01:18:06):
are going to rip the house apart at two different times.
As soon as I get together from Melvin Chrispel, here
comes Bishop Marvin Sap like a free train to run
us over. So, y'all, if you want to cry, this
is the place to be, you want to shout, this
is the place to be. And guess what, you don't
get this for a sixteen dollars ticket.

Speaker 9 (01:18:26):
You don't get it.

Speaker 37 (01:18:27):
This is just general mission to the fair. And you
get all of this on one ticket. And I have
to say, I know that we talk about Chicago, we
talk about Detroit, we talk about all these other places.
But y'all, Indianapolis we've got music, and we've got songwriters,
and we've got produced we've got it all in house.
So come and experience the best of Indianapolis. After you

(01:18:51):
go to church, go to somebody's church, and then come
on and worship with us again for the second watch.

Speaker 1 (01:18:56):
Well, you know what else we got. You know what else?
We got tickets? We got tickets. Not only tickets, but
to the reserved seating area right there in front of
the stage for two two seats sets. So one winter
two seats, one winter two seats. So rita pick a number. Okay,
let's go with thirteen. Whoa she gonna put you to work?

(01:19:18):
Camera caller number thirteen one three. Caller number thirteen one three.
If you are caller number thirteen, get to count and cameraon.
Get over there and get to count. You will win
a pair one two two tickets, a pair one pair
of reserve seats too. Gospel Day at the Indiana State
Fairs starting Sunday afternoon at the State Fair. Who's your

(01:19:42):
lot of refree stage three pm until nine pm. But
you got to get there to be in your seat
to capture everything, including two headliners.

Speaker 13 (01:19:51):
Two headlines, but more direction. It's gonna be there. A
Stewart is from Saint Louis, but he comes through Indy
all the time and he wrecks us. So Carl Liggins,
Clinton Garner, some of Indy's most amazing artists, Landis Archie.
We just have a whole line of Nini and Company,

(01:20:14):
Tina Powell, new Birth, the lineup just continues.

Speaker 1 (01:20:18):
It just goes on and on and on. Lamar, where's
our buddy?

Speaker 3 (01:20:20):
Lamar?

Speaker 13 (01:20:21):
Lamar is going to be out of town.

Speaker 1 (01:20:22):
He's going to be out of town. Yes, Oh, David said,
he was going to be there there. He probably didn't know. No,
he probably I thought Lamar, well, you know what in
spirit and.

Speaker 13 (01:20:32):
Then he'll definitely be Yeah, David.

Speaker 1 (01:20:33):
Probably wasn't aware, so we apologized. David did not know
we were thinking Lamar was going to be there, yes,
uh huh. And so how many how many people is
I mean how many different acts twenty twenty? Yes, from
three to nine twenty twenty, and you're talking about Church
Foux reader, Come on, na, okay, from three to nine twenty,

(01:20:54):
they're okay, go awad y'all, God bless you. Shell absolutely yeah,
but you always it always happens though, it always you
always get it in and that's that's just an amazing thing.
We love it. So what about the fairs? So I
guess you can go to the fair before, I guess before.

Speaker 13 (01:21:11):
During, and after if you need to step away, grab
something to eat, just make sure you're back about four
o'clock because y'all don't want to miss Melvin in seven
thirty Marvin. Yeah, and I know, Melvin, You're going to
be so tired. Melvin is singing at the Cellar Awards.
He has so much going on, Like literally the day
before the night before. I don't know how he does it,
but he is an all star artist, and I'm I'm

(01:21:32):
just obviously excited that he's coming.

Speaker 3 (01:21:34):
Yeah, so much.

Speaker 7 (01:21:35):
Listen, it's only by the grace of God. I'm gonna
be sleepy, but I'm gonna be all right.

Speaker 13 (01:21:39):
The awards this year are in in Memphield, Nashville, Nashville.

Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:21:44):
I was just thinking that you're going to right, so well,
you're not gonna be tired too.

Speaker 8 (01:21:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:21:51):
Nashville is one of those one of those cities. It's
kind of you know, it's drivable, but it's also flable
that it's you know, sometimes a lot of people I
know in my family drive just to cut around the
hassles of flying because it's very short flight, extremely short
semi you know, just a medium drive. So yeah, yeah,
right up sixty five. So so what else? What else

(01:22:12):
can we expect? I mean the uh you say, one
of how many mcs?

Speaker 13 (01:22:17):
One of six?

Speaker 1 (01:22:18):
Ah?

Speaker 13 (01:22:19):
Yes, So Shana is one of our mcs this year.
Tony Lamont are.

Speaker 1 (01:22:25):
Very on top. Okay, there's their way, Patrick Cole, there
we are.

Speaker 13 (01:22:29):
Again, Elliott, and I think that's it.

Speaker 2 (01:22:33):
Oh.

Speaker 13 (01:22:33):
Pastor Kenn Hoskins.

Speaker 1 (01:22:34):
Okay, yeah, okay, okay. So what's it like being back
in Indy. You've you've been You've been around a little
while and going different places of So what was from
Chicago back to Indy? Yes, ma'am, Yeah, what's that been like?

Speaker 9 (01:22:46):
It's been excellent.

Speaker 11 (01:22:47):
Uh.

Speaker 37 (01:22:47):
I've had the privilege of traveling the country with Reverend
Jesse Jackson fighting for civil rights and social justice. And
one thing when I look at a leader, I always
look at when you come from a space, what does
that space look like. I understand that you can lead nationally,
but if home is a wreck, then what is your

(01:23:08):
work really worth? And so being a spiritual son the
late Reverend Michael K. Jones, he says that you can't
teach what you don't know, and you can't lead where
you won't go. And there's so many things I would
have not learned had I not traveled with Reverend Jesse Jackson.
And now I've been commissioned to come back home and
put up the fight at home. And so it's such

(01:23:30):
a blessing. And when we come to this moment, this
is a moment of release, This is a moment of excitement,
This is a moment of joy, and some people you
can't toot your own horn, but I can say about
thee rita green is that to bounce back from a pandemic.
And to see the numbers we've seen the last few

(01:23:52):
years at this concert, thousands of people coming out to
hear gospel. I wish we could have this amount of
people in every church because something about this concert draws
the city of Am. And it doesn't matter race, it
doesn't matter creed, it doesn't matter denomination.

Speaker 3 (01:24:13):
This is unity in the.

Speaker 37 (01:24:15):
Community and it is a time that we have not
just community conversations. But these conversations are vertical between us
and God. They're horizontal between your neighbor. Because the neighbor
I don't go to church with, I will grab on
and we're gonna shout together. We're gonna dance together. You
may be dealing with something. I don't know you from anywhere,

(01:24:37):
but I'll put my arm around you because we agree
in worship. And so being at being home in Indianapolis
is heavenly for me.

Speaker 3 (01:24:44):
It is peace.

Speaker 37 (01:24:46):
But it is also a place of work. But Sunday
I'm gonna put down some work. So this cosby is
just good. It's good to be let the.

Speaker 1 (01:25:01):
Church, saymen, it has been delivered. Indeed, we have a winner.

Speaker 14 (01:25:05):
We have a winner.

Speaker 1 (01:25:07):
She is it, Blinda Green? Is that correct? Hello?

Speaker 29 (01:25:14):
Yes?

Speaker 11 (01:25:15):
Hello?

Speaker 22 (01:25:16):
Hello? How are you?

Speaker 8 (01:25:18):
I'm doing well?

Speaker 7 (01:25:18):
How about yourself, Tina?

Speaker 1 (01:25:20):
I'm doing well? Congratulations. So so, Blinda, you came on
the best day ever to win tickets, to reserve seating
tickets to Gospel Day at the Fairs. So tell us
a little bit about who are you going to take
with you? Have you ever been before? Do you go
every year? What's what's your story?

Speaker 8 (01:25:41):
I have been before, but I never won tickets before.
I've never won anythings from you guys.

Speaker 36 (01:25:47):
I call but never get through.

Speaker 8 (01:25:49):
So I'm just excited about it. And I'll be going
with one of my best friends.

Speaker 1 (01:25:54):
Okay, what time you're gonna get there? Did you hear
read about four? Okay?

Speaker 13 (01:25:59):
Yes, so you're going to be there to see Melvin?

Speaker 1 (01:26:02):
Yeah, I would think they are alrighty, well, congratulates. You're
gonna take one of your friends. See she's playing. It's
safe because sometimes some of these folks that when tickets
will like, well, I think I can either take some
I say that you name them and you're gonna commit.
That's all right, so you stayed you stayed right there
in the middle. Well, congratulations, We love to have you
there Sunday. Uh and enjoy yourself. Okay, thank you, thank

(01:26:25):
you all for thank you, thank you, And it is
a pleasure to give those tickets away. We're gonna give
away some more. H If you're still calling, hang up,
try tomorrow. What's tomorrow? Friday?

Speaker 13 (01:26:36):
Friday?

Speaker 1 (01:26:36):
One last day, one last day, one last day to
do so, So any any closing thoughts from anyone? I mean,
we we've we've had a great time here talking about it.
It's just all we have to do now is just
press the button and say go. Because it sounds like
everything's read.

Speaker 13 (01:26:50):
Everything is ready and set. So Melvin, if you have
any closing or Andy or I just.

Speaker 36 (01:26:57):
Want to say thank you guys again for having me.
I'm super excited. I can't wait to see you guys
there and meet everybody. Tiffany told me to tell you, hey,
it's gonna be great.

Speaker 12 (01:27:09):
But thank you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:27:10):
Well, thank you mister Andy reven Andy.

Speaker 19 (01:27:14):
Yeah, no, I'm really excited. I think I love just
this conversation around unity, and I think there's something so
powerful about how God created music in my opinion, to
be one of the most unifying things that crosses backgrounds
and upbringings and ethnicity and race. And so I think
it's going to be a beautiful day. I believe many
lives are going to be changed.

Speaker 16 (01:27:34):
You know.

Speaker 19 (01:27:35):
I think some people are gonna come just for entertainment
of a concert, but you know, who knows, they might
give their lives to the Lord that day, they might
have an encounter with a living God. And so I'm
praying for that, believing for that, and just honored to
play a small part.

Speaker 1 (01:27:50):
All right, Well, thank you, v. And he's absolutely correct
about music being such a unifier, Yes, because people for years,
it's always been that way, even in the darkest days
of segregation and Jim Crowrer what have you, when they
didn't even put people's faces on album covers or music
and nobody knew who they were listening to. It was unifying.

(01:28:11):
It's absolutely unifying. So that's a great point.

Speaker 38 (01:28:14):
I like that.

Speaker 12 (01:28:15):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (01:28:16):
And Reverend Brown Jesse Jackson, I mean, my goodness, yes, ma'am, no,
how's he doing.

Speaker 37 (01:28:24):
Reverend Jackson is doing well. He is a fighter. He
is eighty three years old. He is battling Parkinson's, but
it's not stopping him. He comes to the office every
day still and he still travels Wow. And so just
keep him in prayer, keep him lifted. And when you
come out Indianapolis, when we come out to this concert one,
I want to warn you, bring your water.

Speaker 9 (01:28:46):
You've got to be it.

Speaker 1 (01:28:47):
Please be caring.

Speaker 37 (01:28:48):
But this is your space of release. Trade your worry
for worship, trade your problems for praise. And guess what,
we are one community lifting one voice to one. So
come out, enjoy yourself, eat all you can eat, and
make sure that you just raise your hands, cry, throw

(01:29:10):
your shoes off, whatever you need to do to release
under God. Because this is going to be a free
space where you can not just have a worship service,
not just a concert, but this is a worship experience.
So come with the expectation. And I promise you, I
know that Brother Melvin Crispel the Third is going to
knock us out at four o'clock. Then you're gonna pull

(01:29:31):
yourself back together and be ready in the seven o'clock
hour to go to the next dimension in God.

Speaker 9 (01:29:37):
So I just can't wait. I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (01:29:39):
Pace yourselves out, pay yourself hey, really indeed, Rita. Final thoughts, just.

Speaker 13 (01:29:45):
Thank everybody for being here today, and thank you miss
Tina for the opportunity. And I look forward to seeing
everybody come out. It is going to be absolutely amazing.
You have an amazing show set for you, so come
on out. It is free. All you have to do
is get into the fair. It is free for everyone,
So we look forward to seeing everybody.

Speaker 1 (01:30:05):
We have a very late caller, Antoine Jenkins, Gospel Artists
for Gospel Day. He's calling to talk to you, Ritay
hands one.

Speaker 9 (01:30:13):
Hey, I'm going pretty good.

Speaker 11 (01:30:16):
How are you?

Speaker 8 (01:30:17):
I'm doing very well.

Speaker 13 (01:30:19):
What are you looking forward to Sunday?

Speaker 28 (01:30:23):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (01:30:23):
Man?

Speaker 35 (01:30:24):
I think the biggest thing is, uh, the fellowship between
local gospel artists, and of course of course me helping
Chrisville and Marvin sat but just the fellowship among our
peers and different things like that.

Speaker 9 (01:30:38):
I think that's the biggest thing. Rita.

Speaker 35 (01:30:40):
I'm just always honored to come to the now Stay
Fair because you.

Speaker 9 (01:30:45):
You know how to pull everybody together.

Speaker 1 (01:30:47):
Yes, she does.

Speaker 35 (01:30:48):
You've done it again, and so I'm super grateful for
this opportunity.

Speaker 1 (01:30:52):
Well, I'm glad you called because you got in just
under the wire. Because we're getting ready to hit that button.
So see how see how that works, see how you unify.
Thank you so so much and we look forward to
seeing you as well. Thank you so much for your contribution.

Speaker 9 (01:31:06):
I really appreciate it, look forward.

Speaker 1 (01:31:07):
Thank you. Thanks, everybody really love it. We got to
get to a break before the computer takes over, I think,
or something like that. Anyway, we'll be right back right
after this.

into our sporting segment with Danny Bridges when he calls in.
I got a call from the last segment, Greg, go ahead,
how are you?

Speaker 7 (01:37:15):
Yes, yes, ma'am. I wanted to call in and congratulate
my almost I don't know if he's still on the
line or not, or if he's here in person. My
almost grandson in law, Pastor Brown, grew up at Martindale
Church of Christ.

Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
They had they had to go for.

Speaker 7 (01:37:34):
I want and of course, well I'm not going to
he may be still listening with anyway. I wanted to
congratulate Rita. I've been coming out through the Fair. Like
I told you, I came back from Saint Louis to
work pharoh. I've been coming back for years since Rodney
Bryant had it and turned it over to her. But
Rodney never got me vip seating though, like Rita did.
So I have to really think and congratulate Rita for

(01:37:58):
being so good to me. And I'm just absolutely looking forward.
I'm planning, planning on going to and I'm making an
announcement for the people that don't know. Marvin Staffa is
going to be preaching it Kingdom Apostolic Ministry, forty nine
hundred East thirty eighth Street on Sunday morning before coming
to the Fair, so I'll be I'll be there Sunday
morning and at the Fair to listen to him Sunday

(01:38:20):
afternoon as well.

Speaker 1 (01:38:21):
Wow, is that not for public release or are you
absolutely for public release?

Speaker 7 (01:38:29):
Camera's got it all over the Facebook as well as Rita.
Oh okay, contact Yeah. When I contacted her and gave
her a hard time about why she hadn't told me,
she said, it's all over social media.

Speaker 1 (01:38:42):
Okay, there it is, then right there are now? So
are you going to be over at Gospel Day of
the last day of the fair.

Speaker 7 (01:38:48):
Absolutely, I wouldn't miss it totally. The only way I
miss it if I'm in the morgue.

Speaker 1 (01:38:53):
Oh okay, okay, So your shift will be over by
the time it starts.

Speaker 7 (01:38:57):
You know what, Tina, that that son out at the
state Fair with my seventy two year old behind and
I had to throw in a towel. I couldn't do
what I was doing. It like what I was doing
at sixteen years old. So I'm not I'm not working anymore.
But I stayed in town for the Gospel day I want.

Speaker 1 (01:39:13):
Oh, okay, I see. So it started to get to
you a little bit.

Speaker 8 (01:39:16):
Huh.

Speaker 7 (01:39:17):
Absolutely, the o gray marrying.

Speaker 1 (01:39:19):
What are you used to Yeah, the old green marrying
what it used to be? My mother used to say
that all the time. But the heat, the heat takes
his toll on young and old. But you know, certainly
if you're a little bit older, it's a little bit
slower recovery time.

Speaker 11 (01:39:33):
I tell you, Okay, I hadn't.

Speaker 7 (01:39:35):
Worked out there since about seventeen, eighteen years ago. On
that time, I was on a golf cart. So it's
totally different than standing out twelve hours in the sun
at ninety two degrees. Yeah, a little more than I
can stand.

Speaker 1 (01:39:49):
So, okay, okay, okay, I'm not a.

Speaker 7 (01:39:52):
Quitter, but I'm not trying to go down like that.

Speaker 1 (01:39:55):
No, you don't want to go down like that. All right,
thank you, Greg, I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:00):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:40:00):
Today three one seven eight zero thirteen ten, still haven't

is getting late. It's getting late. Anyway, let's go back
to the phone lines U three one seven eight zero

Speaker 6 (01:40:17):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:40:18):
Former counselor Oliver, how are you?

Speaker 7 (01:40:20):
Oh, I'm just fine.

Speaker 12 (01:40:21):
Just listen to your show today. I'm followed that the
gospelers still care out to be a state per I
think it's a wonderful thing as it. Yeah, I want
to announce that Summer Celebrates. We're going to be at
Detroit Williams part uh huh a thirty two hundred settlers
and then we're gonna have it's gonna be hosted by myself.
Have Gospel says Jazz Rhythm of Blues movie for the

(01:40:44):
kids play Ground, Maturity everything's out there, just coming Saturday
starting to five o'clock. So I just want announce it
to the public. This free invited, bring your own chair,
maybe the opera also we call the Sunshine. But we're
gonna have a great time and we're looking forward to
building the community. Come out this pre concert with jazz, gospel,

(01:41:06):
Arithma Blues, add a couple of performers. Bars Coleman can
be the DJ DJ and Ice, Ice and Mike and
be some performers, and we can have a dancing through
uh doing land dance.

Speaker 1 (01:41:20):
And also, oh so this is on a Saturday. This
is gonna be on a Saturday.

Speaker 12 (01:41:25):
Become a Saturday the fatid Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:41:28):
So, counsel Oliver, you is this your second year for
having this I know, or maybe your third I don't know.

Speaker 12 (01:41:34):
But about the third out that get it through the
Pop Foundation and others that the sponsor the concert?

Speaker 1 (01:41:43):
Yeah, I know, you know. Can you let everybody know
why you started this in the first place, because I
think it's a great idea.

Speaker 12 (01:41:50):
I just started. Oh no, I just started.

Speaker 1 (01:41:52):
I thought you were you were instrumental in starting it though,
weren't you?

Speaker 12 (01:41:55):
Well several words? Is by going back any many years.
A person that associated with in my upgrade wanted the
city the park to respond to the community and the
hole of the concerts during the summer. Such is a
great thing. At all the parks in the community centers,
this is a wonderful thing. And at Charles Wheelm Park

(01:42:17):
and situated like this, obviously I have someone get up
and say, why this park the mayor Charles Williams, What
kind of person Charles Williams was, et cetera, et cetera
in our community? Now say the same pay by Frederick
Douglas park. Who will take doesness? Some of us don't
know that, you know, I don't know Charles Williams Worth
will yell.

Speaker 1 (01:42:37):
We have a sitting president who didn't know that Frederick
Douglas was no longer alive. So there's that.

Speaker 12 (01:42:43):
Yeah, we got the Stanley straight and park got there
at Barton, you know, like who was Stanleish prayer. So
when I'm out there doing something, I have someone say
who approclamation said, who's stanleysh Trader war What do you
do in that community? He said, I mean all the
wonderful things and this is something that we're all proud
of us and we're looking forward to five o'clock Saritay
and the Charles Wheal Park thirty two on the block

(01:43:05):
on Southerner Avenue.

Speaker 1 (01:43:07):
Yeah, and there is. It's all free, correct, It's all free.

Speaker 12 (01:43:12):
And then later on that evening which they're gonna show
a movie for the kids and for the family, you know,
just outdoor. It's just a beautiful thing right around the
corner of a little Bethel Church there, you know, right
there at thirty seconds at MLK I'm not very Jay Brown,
right around the corner from there. So this is just
a great just a great thing to have in the

(01:43:34):
community to come out and sit and listen to gospel, jazz,
brisby blues, some performers, live dances.

Speaker 16 (01:43:42):
You know.

Speaker 12 (01:43:43):
Just get up and get with them, you know what
I mean. Yeah, they're they're they're good. And they advice
the public just come up there and get with them.

Speaker 1 (01:43:50):
You know, well they go out there to get it
with them, and you know what, this kind of thing
is really important, uh, to build the spirit and the
confident of the community as well, because we do get
together and we can very well get together and have
a nice time. And the more opportunities we have to
get together as a community I think the stronger we're
going to be. And uh so, you know, events like this,

(01:44:14):
I'm glad that they're still around. I'm glad you're still involved,
even though you didn't start it, as you said, but
you certainly help headline it, and you certainly are an
advocate out here pushing for folks to get to know.
How many do you typically have each year that attends well?

Speaker 12 (01:44:30):
I have to input into what goes on some for
public goals on jugs or at riverside, you know, it's
it's all older at all the parts, hosts something walk
or twice do the summer, you know, concerts et cetera,
et cetera. Put a family and those are the community
and so wonderful thing, you know. And and of course

(01:44:52):
I had my pretty years on the council and my
association with other councils and accuping the mayor of Inapolis,
you know, so we're able to keep this thing going.
Wonderful thing and that it's just it's just wonderful for
the local community, the houses in that surrounding those parks, uh,
the neighborings, et cetera, et cetera, for them to come
out and see one another, meet one another again, you know,

(01:45:14):
and and in this cave having gospel on a Saturday. Hey,
we pray.

Speaker 3 (01:45:19):
We just saw on pray on.

Speaker 12 (01:45:20):
Sunday morning till hal we pray on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

Speaker 11 (01:45:24):
So I mean, so.

Speaker 12 (01:45:25):
Gospel would be there on Saturday evening during the cover selections, jazz,
reverarm blues. You know, it's it's all good. It's a
wonderful Yeah, family, sure, tell family.

Speaker 1 (01:45:35):
Yeah it is. Yeah, it is all right. Well, thank you,
counselor really appreciate it. And uh, once again, it's Saturday.
From what time to what time?

Speaker 12 (01:45:45):
Five to seven? Find after what that's the concert? Now
the movie will come on after seven.

Speaker 1 (01:45:52):
What's the movie?

Speaker 12 (01:45:54):
It's sept that they have for the kids. Just uh
uh Wilderness Love I think the name of the movie directed. Yes,
it's just setting talking towards your children and families.

Speaker 1 (01:46:09):
Yes, but no admission cost. Just come as you are,
no registration coming, No.

Speaker 12 (01:46:15):
Just come and bring bring your chair, bring your maybe
an eye brow. Because of the eighty seven degrees took
it's going to be out Saturday, so.

Speaker 1 (01:46:25):
It'll be in the nineties. It'll be in the nineties. Well, well, okay,
it'll be in the seventies. How about that bring your
umbrell Yeah so then indeed, all right, well, thank you
so much, and thanks for reminding the community about that.
That should be a nice time. And that's over over

(01:46:46):
here like midtown kind of Sutherland Avenue where the old.

Speaker 12 (01:46:49):
Right lot of park will walk your head right the thirty.

Speaker 1 (01:46:52):
Yeah, thirtieth where the Saint Peter Claver Center, the old.

Speaker 12 (01:46:56):
Very two part two Sutherland Avenue.

Speaker 1 (01:46:59):
Alright, all right, okay, Dooky, all right, well, thank you, counselor.
I'll appreciate it, all right, thank you, bye bye, And yeah,
that sounds like a really nice time as well. So
there's not going to be a lack of activities and
events for folks to go to coming up over the
next few days. I also, as we were talking about

(01:47:19):
when David Gray was here, I believe it was Tuesday,
was today Thursday when he was here Tuesday. The Esconazi
Health Fair out at the Grande Campus out on East
thirty eighth Street. That's going on where there's a whole
lot of just everything, I mean, anything that you can
think of that a healthfare has and more. They always

(01:47:42):
do it up big. And I'll be out there broadcasting
as well, starting I think at ten o'clock from ten
until noon, so that's going to be that's going to
be a nice time as well. So that and then,
my goodness, I can't even think of everything. Of course,
the Fair, you know the Fair. But you know, in
all seriousness though, if you are going to the Fair

(01:48:04):
between now and when the fair ends, if you're going
to any activity, including we certainly want you to go
to Gospel Day the Gospel Festival at the State Fair,
please please please prepare for the weather conditions. Just stay hydrated,
keep some water with you, don't get overheated, dressed appropriately,

(01:48:25):
and you know, if the heat gets too much for it,
you take some breaks from it. We want everybody to
be able to enjoy all the outdoor activities that are
coming up, but we don't want anyone at all to
get sick or succumb to the heat. Such as it is.
As we say, that is what's predicted, that is what
is forecast, But we know how weather forecasts can change.

(01:48:47):
So we're hoping that it won't be as hot as
in the upper nineties or load of mid nineties, not
upper load of mid nineties. We're hoping it doesn't get
that warm, but if it does, we are hoping that
everyone that is going to be out in it is
very very careful and takes every precaution necessary to keep
themselves safe from the heat while enjoying uh the outdoor

(01:49:09):
activities there. So so Cameron, our good buddy Danny must
have gotten busy, so we may have to reschedule him
for tomorrow. That happens with Danny a lot of times,
and there could be something breaking in the world of sports.
We don't know. I know he was supposed to have
let me look and see. I think he has a
column do today, Yeah on Indianapolis Recorder dot Com.

Speaker 17 (01:49:33):
Like, why are you're doing it?

Speaker 10 (01:49:34):
I want to let the audience know to all the
callers because you guys have been blowing the lines up
all the last two weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:49:41):
Crazy.

Speaker 10 (01:49:41):
The phone is going crazy. We have one more set
of tickets to give away tomorrow, all right, one more
so for whatever y'all do. Call as early as you can,
as soon as she says ready to let go, because
we got one more set of tickets left to give away.

Speaker 1 (01:49:57):
But don't don't call before I say go.

Speaker 9 (01:50:02):
As soon as you say that.

Speaker 1 (01:50:04):
Yeah, as soon as I say ready to say, don't
call before I say that, because yeah, I'm not well,
I don't pick it up anyway, but I'm missing. I'm
just saying that doesn't put you in in Q. The
minute you hear we say go or what have you,
then you can go ahead and try to compete for it.
Thirteen was the That was the biggest number we've had
in a long time, wasn't it.

Speaker 10 (01:50:24):
K I think the house we've gone Friday that was
seven seven.

Speaker 1 (01:50:28):
Yeah, we go between like three five, seven eight. I'll
give you that at thirteen that they were truly were
lucky to get in at thirteenth. So and we only
have how many lines, are we We've got a feeling
six long six Yeah, so we can but uh but anyway,
you all, uh you, I can tell you all are

(01:50:48):
listening because when we put out the word about free
tickets and contests, the phone line is light up, just
like they did yesterday when we were talking about ae
S utility rate hikes, the public hearings and your individual circumstance.
I you know what we the station has. I would
not I would not say that I have fans, but

(01:51:10):
I'm very grateful that the station has listeners. The station
has listeners, and that's that's the overall goal. It's it's
not it's not about me. Uh, it's not, it's really not.
I'm just here to facilitate. But I do appreciate that
people tune in to listen. For that, I am truly,
truly grateful, and we need to uh to do more

(01:51:31):
of that as days go on. You heard from the
Urban League, uh, and what they're talking about is very serious.
You see different things being shut down daily. You've seen
the attack on what seems to be anything and everything black.
You've seen the attack on DEI initiatives, and you've seen

(01:51:51):
the speed at which these uh I don't know, the
these titles are being torn down. You know these these
you've the speed at which this progress is being rolled back.

Speaker 16 (01:52:03):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:52:04):
And so this is a jewel that we have in
the community, being an urban station black owned uh and
uh you know, specifically for the community at large, but
you know, with with unabashedly UH, Blacks and African Americans
listen to us because we were in an urban station.

(01:52:25):
But we're you know, we're here for everybody, but our lane,
of course, is us. And so the fact that we
still have this when you when we're seeing attacks on
other media outlets and media organizations and PBS and and
then you're seeing attacks at CBS and the extortion things
going on. We we have to keep our radio stations going.

(01:52:46):
And so when you listen, when you participate, when you
when you keep us relevant, that keeps us on the air.
So we really really really appreciate each and every one
of you, especially in times like this. So let's let's
go ahead, and I think that's all the time we
have for today. Ah, you don't play the music. I
know it's time now. Okay, So that's all the time

(01:53:08):
we have for right now. Willie Moore Junior on the
radio is up next. We'll be back tomorrow. We'll have
our final set of tickets for Gospel Day at the
Indiana State Fair Reserve seats, no doubt tomorrow. So until then,
I'm Tina Cosby in This is community connection.

Speaker 2 (01:53:43):
Your source from music that will inspire, encourage and uplift you.
