Speaker 1 (00:07):
And good afternoon. Welcome to Community Connection. Today is Wednesday,
December the seventeenth. Eric Gone's on vacation. Be swept from
our sister station Hot one hundred point nine, the Indiana Pacers,
the Indiana Fever, and a whole lot of other places
out there in the community is here with us, holding
things down swift as always. Welcome back, Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm glad to be here for the third day.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
You know, you do a lot of community. This isn't
the only show. I mean, it's called Community Connection, but you, Karen,
you guys all do a lot in the community as well,
including your own you know, your own individual absolutely.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
I just was given an award by a new Boy.
They did a community Hero award. They didn't event their
end of the year wrap up Monday night, so you know,
and I stopped buying, like I really love what they
have going on over there.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Kareem is a great guy. Cream heins yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Help him and his wife. They did an end of
the year wrap up. I love both of them, great people,
and what they do for the kids is though.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
You know, now, what you do is so congratulations. You
give yourself around of applause. That is that is Truman,
but you are. You're always out there working in the community.
You're working with our kids or young people and everybody
out there. And so you know, just because it shows community,
that doesn't mean that everybody in this building and doing community.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
We said, you guys do a lot, we do a
lot like him. For me, I learned it from those
before me. You know, Like Tony Lamont was somebody I
looked up to as a kid because he used to
come to my school and give away stuff like Yeah,
like Tony was a part of a program where if
you went to school every day, you got this little card.
It was like the perfect attendance card and you can
go get like free pizza, fifteen percent off of this
twenty percent off of that. I don't know who paid
(01:45):
for or like who was I don't know. I just
know you would see mister Lamont coming to the school
awarding perfect attendance. So like stuff like that and hanging
with aimings and learning for things like that was stuff
that I learned about very early from everybody else.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
So would you said who would you say that? I
guess maybe was your inspiration for going into this Nobody.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I didn't want to do this.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
It chose you.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Yes, my brothers, my nephew's mom. She heard a contest
and just kept saying, you should go try out for
the internship. I think you should turn your resume and
it'd be very dope and I'm like, I don't know
nothing about radio.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Lady. She was like, just go do it. I'm telling you.
Just just listen to me. And I'm like okay, and yees.
She got me in.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah. Then then then it's that thing with broadcasting. Once
it just kind of at you. You can't let it go.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Like I loved it from day one. I was like, oh,
this is it. Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
So we laughed.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Now when I talked to her, she was she'd be like,
you didn't even want to do this. Now look who
you are, like, and I'm like, thank you.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
You know, it's amazing how parallel our story is gonna
be some because this chose me. I had no no
idea that I was going to go into this when
I went to college because I wanted to be I
was pre med. I wanted to be a psychiatrist, and
it was just an elective. You know, when you go
to school, you have to take electives. Any so you know,
you always had to take well this, this is enrichment
and this. And I always liked to write, and so
(03:05):
I took a broadcast writing course and uh, the professor
was like, you know, you might this might be something
you you might want to look into. I'm like nah,
nah no. And it wasn't good in math, wasn't good
in science. So I said, well, maybe I should look
into it, and got started and the rest is history,
as you say. But now, and I always I admire
(03:25):
people who have known from day one that this is
all they've ever wanted to do.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, No, I think that's dope.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
That is that is amazing because I mean there were
kids that I went to high school with that did
the yearbook, that did you know media right, They did
it all because this was their dream. This was their
Never in a million years did it occur to me.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Never, Like I knew I wanted to do music, but
not this side.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Of this side. Yeah, what we're here now because we're
supposed to be.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
I do.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
That's what I say.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Indeed, Well, on the show today, if you have lived
here in Indianapolis, Central Indiana for any amount of time,
you know the man and the name Ricky solid Gold Clark.
He has served this radio station, WTLCFM, this city, the state,
and a number of capacities just this as AM, but
he served FM before we got to him. Anyway, served
(04:13):
the city, he served the state. He's done so much.
He's going to join us in our next hour and
among other things, we're going to talk about the one
hundred and thirty year anniversary of the Indianapolis Recorder. Ricky
is certainly a part of that one hundred and thirty
year history, a big part of one hundred and thirty
year history because of the innovative things that he did
with his publishing and things of that nature. So he's
(04:34):
also right now. Ricky's always he's up on everything. He's
a podcaster now, oh that's dope. Yeah, Diversity Focus today.
He had me as a guest on there, not too
terribly long ago, really good podcast. So anyway, Ricky's going
to be in our second hour also today. Another opportunity
to give away a pair of tickets to the David
and Tamala Man Love and Relationship Tour coming to the
(04:55):
Old National Center here in Indianapolis in just a couple
of months. Wednesday, April twenty ninth, David and Tamla Man
their loving relationship to her on stage at the Old
National Center coming up soon, So please stay tuned for
your chance to win a pair of tickets to that show.
Time now to bring in our contributing analyst, James Patterson. James,
(05:16):
how are you doing today?
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Hey, I'm real good, Tina, how are you doing. I'm
good to be with you today.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yes, good to be here. It's always good to be seen.
You know. I love that part. So yeah, people say,
oh it's good. Yeah, it's good to be seen, it's
good to be here.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Before we start, let me say this because we've been
getting calls. If you're listening on the stream or the
app and it stalls out, it plays a loop.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Hit play again. You got to hit play like two times. Oh,
I wanted to kick back in. I meant to say
that yesterday.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Engineering told me because people called like, hey, it's playing
the same loop. The engineer was like, hit play again
and it should automatically reset. So for those listening on
the app, if we go to commercial you have a problem,
hit play for a second time and it should reload
the page.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Good advice. I will remember that because sometimes during the
show I get those little text messages and things, and I,
you know, I just tell them the engineers are and
they are, they're working on it. It's a it's it's
a work in progress. And I tell you, James uh I,
I was telling our general manager today that each day,
I just you're walking into a different building each day.
(06:21):
That's how quickly things are being built out.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
So oh, that's that's really good. And I know you're
excited about the end process gets done.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah, just bear with us. Everybody bear with us, and
we're going to get through it. So James uh the
I guess we could start with the weather. You want
to start there?
Speaker 6 (06:42):
Yeah, yeah, well it's not really anything too complicated today.
I know people are pretty pleased about the outside who
are going out because we've got a much better day
than we've had in the past several days. I mean,
we've got son out there. Although we'll see some partlies,
quality skies today, temperatures will reach the upper forties this afternoon.
(07:05):
We haven't had that in a long time. The moderate
temperature should hold. These temperature should hold through tomorrow when
we're expected Tina to crop that fifty degree mark and
go over fifty. But that'll be short lived because Friday
it's gonna sharply turn colder. Tomorrow, we expect some rain
to come in sometime during the day, and especially later
(07:29):
in the day. We'll get the bulk of it. It'll
the wind will pick up quite a bit too tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Tina and Wenday and wet.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Wendy and wet. But just for one day and then
we bounce back up to the forties and fifties. And
right now, I saw one forecast that right now people
are looking ahead to a week from today, which everybody
knows is Christmas.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Day, one week from today.
Speaker 6 (07:51):
Sixty degrees on one forecaster. That could be wrong, but
sixty degrees off Christmas, you know, after we had like
below zero a couple of days ago. So this is Indiana, right, yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
It is. And I saw some forecasters hinting at that.
Uh they said, dare I say fifty degrees or more?
But we'll we'll, we'll nail that down as time goes down.
But they were already talking about fifty degrees possibly on
Christmas Day one week from today. And you know what,
I have never felt this far behind, and I don't
even know what behind is anymore, But this far behind
(08:25):
one week preparations for Christmas. Usually I will have done
my grocery shopping because we you know, I do a
hybrid and you know, go out of town part of
the part of the time and then back in town.
So you have to you know, when you go out
of town, you have to prepare for a lot of stuff.
And I just I just haven't. I don't know, but
it'll happen. It always does. Hey, it's gonna come, whether
I'm ready or not. You know, it's gonna you know.
Speaker 6 (08:46):
What we got we have well six days until the day,
you know, including you know, seven days on Christmas. One week,
so we got time. Yeah, no worry, no worry.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Well yeah, and like I said, either we either will
or won't. You know, they'll either be done or you can. Yeah,
exactly exactly what we can. So yeah. So anyway, James,
the weather pretty good.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
Yeah, beautiful if people wanted to get out today.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, A lot of snow is going to be melting too.
Speaker 6 (09:22):
Yeah. And if we get to a batch of rain
that is predicted for tomorrow especially, it'll be solid tomorrow
afternoon and evening should be when that when that big
area of rain passes through. Uh, the the snow that
is not gone tonight and tomorrow morning should pretty much
be dissipated and evaporated and gone.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Yeah, okay, well we had I got a text just
about five minutes ago from former Counselor William Duke Oliver.
He said he was going to be calling in around one,
but apparently the mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church out there
at sixteenth in Montcalm, sixteenth Street in that area, not
yeah right there. He says that they're having a big, big,
(10:08):
He's got big in capital letters food giveaway starting at
noon today out of Mount Olive. He said, I would
love to call in around one to keep informing the public.
So Counselor Oliver, we are awaiting your call. Your call
is welcome if you want to call in and let
everybody know the details. But yeah, mount Olive Missionary Baptist
(10:28):
Church out there right at sixteenth in Montcalm on the
nearby side.
Speaker 6 (10:32):
I mean, I know that's going to be music to
some of the listeners here. There was a couple of
people who called in, you know, when they had it
at Martin University. Reverend Hunter had it at Martin University,
and they were on their way there. There was a
couple of people on their way there. And when they
(10:55):
got there with.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
It, Andrea who told us she was saying before she
got there and that couldn't have been more than five
minutes when he was on the air and said they
still had sixty boxes.
Speaker 6 (11:04):
They had sixty boxes, and she said that they were
out when she arrived shortly after he was on. So
at least this is a repreat. What's that Mount Olive?
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Is that Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church?
Speaker 6 (11:16):
That church? Yeah, and that's gonna at noon.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
Now, this is according and I'm taking this directly from
yea too. Oliver's text to me and I gave him
the thumbs up, thumbs up and said, yeah, go ahead,
you know, I said that's fine. So he says, big
church giveaway beginning around twelve noon. Would love to call
around one to day to keep informing the public. So, UH,
(11:42):
counsel probably busy doing whatever, but whatever. But if you're listening,
counselor what, you're welcome to call UH. If you're in
the vicinity and he needs some food, head over about Olive.
It it's underway because it's one o'clock now. So if
it started at noon. It's it's well under way.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
Yeah, what's the address you got on that team, because
the address I got from Mount Olive is that on
the near west side.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
There, Yes, near west side. I was just saying you.
Speaker 6 (12:13):
Ten three West sixteenth Street.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, near the intersection of sixteenth in Montcalm. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
Yeah, the ten o three West sixteenth Street, all of
Missionary Baptist Church. And my point was, if the need
was is, you know, is there for people like Andrea
and somebody else I'm trying to think of her name
who called in and said she was coming from Westfield,
(12:40):
this lady she was just going to be moving out
of state soon. But I mean they were just showing
us that the need is there. If the need is there,
then this is the be a great thing for people
who missed the last one who was still in need.
I think there's plenty of need out there. And you know,
(13:00):
as long as you become aware of these food giveaways,
I know you're putting it out there so that people
know where these resources are.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Yeah. Absolutely, yeah, and so and I appreciate uh the
counselor and everybody else that wants to text and and
call or email and let us know because you let
us know, and we'll let everybody else know. So that's
that's absolutely yeah, that's absolutely how that'll go. So here
(13:29):
we go. We have a caller Swift.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
We do. We have a Victoria.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Everybody else okay, Victoria, Hey, hey, how are you?
Speaker 7 (13:41):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (13:42):
Truly blessed? And everybody doing down here today?
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Quite well? I think Eric is not here today Swift is, though, well,
give him a shout.
Speaker 6 (13:51):
Out, everybody.
Speaker 8 (13:53):
I love you out, God bless you out. And I
heard the message yesterday, I mean the other day when
I put out the requests to pass her hunter.
Speaker 7 (14:03):
And it's okay, because you know I could.
Speaker 6 (14:06):
I constantly help people.
Speaker 8 (14:08):
And one thing about it, I'm taking care of an
elderly person right now. That's eighty four. So I'm gonna
do that till I leave. And I was gonna leave
out my dear Sunday. So I've seen one of his
neighbors and it was so sweet and so much of
a blessing, and she said, it's not meant for you
to go because she really don't want to see me go.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (14:29):
God is good. I've made the big meals this past week,
and like I was telling y'all the other day. How
you you go to the grocery store and you separate
your meat and stuff like that. So I've done that
at his house, you know.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
And I really would.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
Like to get them something for Christmas as well as
you know, get.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Them some food.
Speaker 6 (14:51):
So I'm grateful for the time if I.
Speaker 8 (14:54):
Can get there, and if I can't, it's okay, you know,
but thank you all for being concerned, because I heard
everybody saying, well.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Victoria is on her way, she comes from west Field.
Speaker 8 (15:05):
But I'm okay today, I am okay, okay, we appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
That's that's all right.
Speaker 8 (15:11):
And you said, that's that Mount Olive off of West sixteenth.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
West sixteenth Street, James, is the exact address you have
it there?
Speaker 6 (15:18):
Yeah, the exact address Victoria is ten o three West
sixteen So you can put in your GPS ten zero
three West sixteenth Street. Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. I
know where Mount Olive the is.
Speaker 8 (15:33):
You know, when you're in the church realm, you pretty
much know where a lot of the churches are.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
You know the you know the circuit right, yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
Yeah, they started at twelve. Tina was told. Now this
is information, Tina, God.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
You know Swift has just told me that Counsel Oliver
is on the line, So yeah, listen, go ahead, listen,
Victoria get to.
Speaker 6 (15:55):
Go to a Westfield. I just melt nobles Field.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Well, okay, I'm on my.
Speaker 8 (16:01):
Way to my patient's house here on Colorado. But I
would like to give him a box for Christiens.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Okay, well yeah, well we're gonna listen to what Counsel
Oliver has to say. Okay, okay, thank you, Thank you, Victoria,
thanks for all you do. That's a beautiful thing. Helping
wherever you can. That's great. Counselor Oliver.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Are you there with the pastor? There you go?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Okay, oh you there? He's there with a pastor.
Speaker 9 (16:25):
Okay, yes, with Pastor Oligias and Deacon thrash here and
shut rather deacon and passes all here. Also, here's I'm
putting Pastor Legians on. He can tell you all about
what's going on here, what's worth and having.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
Okay, okay, go ahead, Pastor? How are you today?
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I'm doing good?
Speaker 6 (16:40):
So how are you?
Speaker 1 (16:42):
I have no complaints? Thank you?
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Yes?
Speaker 10 (16:45):
Yes, well we're here at line Olive Church ten No.
Three W'TH sixteenth Street and we're giving away boxes for
Christmas for those who may be a lead of something
for Christmas this year, for dinner, and and we're asking
the community to come out. We are started with some
two hundred and fifty boxes and so we're still here
(17:08):
and so wait here on the Mockcom street side the
parking lot and all are welcome to come.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Indeed, now is there any requirement do you have to
pre register? Or is it just come as you are.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
And just come as you are, Just come on through.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Come on through? And so what's in the boxes? What
do you got?
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Well, we have a ham, a ham. We have things
to prepare for.
Speaker 10 (17:37):
Meals and dressing and vegetables for side dishes and things
of that nature. So it's a complete meal porsch of
boxes that can serve dinner at Christmas time.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
Now do you have to do how do you receive
the boxes? Is it a drive through? Do you come
into the you know? How do people get it in
an orderly way?
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Yes, it's a drive through. Come down sixteen street. Of course,
there's an alleyway in.
Speaker 10 (18:07):
Between our building and the old shelter building and it's
come through and there are people out here who will
guide you in the way that we are having them
get in line to receive their box.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
So two hundred and fifty. How many have you given
away so far? It's been about an hour, do you know,
just trying to get an idea of how you're.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Pacing, we'll probably given away probably about one hundred.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Oh oh, so you're about halfway there in less than
about an hour, right, yes, yes, Well I hope Victoria
makes it from Noblesville because she's.
Speaker 6 (18:43):
A yeah, she's got.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
A long way to go. Yeah, Victoria, if you're listening,
don't speed or anything, but go directly there. Do not pass,
just go directly to the church.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Well, she just needed one box to give to someone.
Is that the young lady that was on the line.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Yeah, she was just not Victoria.
Speaker 10 (19:00):
Yes, well, she's coming from Nobleville. I personally was sitting
one to the side to wait on it.
Speaker 6 (19:05):
Okay, her name is Victoria.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Victoria.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Okay, yeah, yeah, and Victoria, I pray you are listening
because that is so kind of you, Pastor, thank you
so much.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Yeah. Oh, y, you are welcome. That's that's what that's
what we're here for. Were here for the community.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Yes, and she oh, is that somebody asking you a question?
Speaker 2 (19:28):
There, sir, No, No, somebody's giving instructure.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
To give instructions for the driver. Yeah. So she she
you know, we heard her talk a few minutes ago,
James about how she just likes to serve, She just
likes to help. Yeah, and these are people that cannot
get out, you know, and there mid mid late dadies yah,
something like that, and so she wants to make sure
they're okay and taken care of before she goes.
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Off for christ Yeah. Absolutely, that's really wonderful.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
That is very kind. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
So when so this is just until it's gone, right,
right pastor.
Speaker 10 (20:01):
Yes, ma'am, it's just till it is all gone and uh,
and we'll be here until each box is given away.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
We love it all right.
Speaker 6 (20:10):
That's wonderful.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
That is wonderful. Thank you, and thank you and all
the members of the church and everybody else that had
anything to do with these food boxes with hams and
a lot of side side items to prepare for Christmas.
This is wonderful.
Speaker 10 (20:25):
This is wonderful, and thank you for allowing us to
come on your show team and share this with the community.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Oh, it's our pleasure. It's always our pleasure. We appreciate
you being out there. So tell did counselor Oliver have
anything more? He wanted to add, heez right here, Okay, okay,
how you doing co Uh I'm doing okay, sounds like
you're doing pretty good too.
Speaker 11 (20:47):
Great.
Speaker 9 (20:47):
A lot of happy patients, A lot of happy patients
come through. What church is doing here? Everybody just real
please driving through and uh we're gonna run out. So listen,
that need to be picked up that two far away.
I can do that, bring them over and get your food.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Well, how would they get in touch with you?
Speaker 9 (21:08):
One seven two o one six seven seven.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
Zero Okay, let me write it down.
Speaker 9 (21:13):
We probably got another forty five minutes. Les listen, forty
five minutes that I'll be gone.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Yeah, that's what I was wondering about the pacing, because
it seemed like seemed like it was going back pretty quickly.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (21:26):
All they can do it. All they could do if
they listen, they call and uh I can come get them.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
You're gonna come and get them.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Okay, yep, I'm gonna okay, I'm gonna don't have fair petation.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Somebody didn't have transportation. Uh, but you won't be delivering though,
right If they don't have transportation. You'll just come and
get them, right.
Speaker 9 (21:44):
Yes, just give me a call, I come get them.
They come pick up the food.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Okay, donky, Now have you had to do that yet?
Speaker 9 (21:54):
They pardon? Have you?
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Okay? Let me see give me that number again, three
one seven one two zero six seven seven zero okay,
all right, that's your number, or that's the number they
should call.
Speaker 9 (22:09):
Okay, Hey, thanks familiar man.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
All right, thank you, and we appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
All right.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Yeah, boy, that was a nice pop up, James.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
Yeah, can you hear me?
Speaker 1 (22:22):
No, I can hear you. I can hear you. I
thought your head says, but no, that was a really
nice pop up there.
Speaker 6 (22:27):
Oh yeah, absolutely, I mean and then to get somebody
who didn't get there the other day over the Martin
University with Rever Hunters Christmas giveaway, that was icing on
the cake.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
I hope she makes it though, because I mean it's.
Speaker 6 (22:43):
Well Pastor Leggings is going to put aside of a
box for her, I believe, he said. Yeah, yeah, so
she'll she'll be taking care of her she gets here.
But like you said, she needs a high tailored over there.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Yeah yeah, well is it the weather's clear. Everything is good,
so she should be able to make it. Uh So, James,
A lot of stuff, a lot of stuff going on
that we can catch up. I'm not sure if we've
talked about this briefly, but haven't. Not briefly, but you know,
we just haven't really been able to spending time. And
(23:19):
this is the Indianapolis Local Educational Alliance. Are you're familiar
with that.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
Group, right? I am? I mean, I'm I'm as familiar
on it probably as you are. I'm not like, I
don't go to their meetings. I haven't done a little,
but I've read some articles about what they're trying to
do to IPS based upon what the state legislature passed.
A lot of the state legislature pass which basically is trying,
my view, take away the oversight of Indianapolis Public Schools
(23:51):
and give it to a an advisory board.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
Well, the i l e A isn't It is an
advisory board that is going to issue a report to
the state legislature about They say, how IPS the city's
largest school, the state's largest school system of all. I
don't know why the rest of the state of Indiana
is interested in IPS, but they are and have been.
(24:17):
I think they just wanted to take it over. But
as we've been warned by our lawmakers from the IBLC.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
Right, Yeah, so, Tina, when I say advisory board, the
Local Educational Alliance, it was reported by chopbeat on December third,
advanced the proposal to dilute the power of the elected
IPS school Board. That's what was in the title. And
(24:47):
they advanced two options. The first model or two models.
The first model would increase the influence of the mayor
and charters through a new three way power are sharing agreement.
That models proposed collaborative, compact advisory boards. So what would
(25:08):
they would do was create in this first model and
a sort of a super advisory board which the IPS
elected board eventually would report to. And let's see, the
IPS school Board and Charter Schools Board would report to
this advisory board which would collect and levy property taxes
(25:32):
and serve as a charter new charter school authorizer. The
Mayor's Office of Education Innovation, however, which currently serves as
the charter authorizer, would also continue to in that role.
So that's one model. The the second model would concentrate power
in the mayor's hand by establishing an indian Office Education
(25:54):
Authority consisting of the mayor appointed Secretary of Education. In
this version of the model the president last month, the
mayor would also appoint a nine member policy making board
for those nine so that's another advisory board. And by
the way, what what you and I looked at earlier
(26:19):
today was this story about the the mayor and the
city county. Well, actually the mayor and Lewis, well, yeah, yeah,
Well it's superintendent Maggie Lewis told us about this IPA
Superintendent Alicia Johnson, who are on the on on on
(26:42):
the board on the ahead of the I l e
A group that's looking at this. The mayor, it says
in that story is is ahead of it. So let
me just go ahead. And what were you going to say?
Speaker 1 (26:56):
I don't want to no, no, I was just going
to say that the story that you and I both
looked at basically says that the mayor and the IPS
superintendent have released five priorities that they think, uh, the
the I the Indianapolis Local Educational Alliance should include in
its final recommendations to reshape the IPS district. Uh, these
(27:19):
are going to be recommendations that they're going to present
to Indiana state lawmakers. Some of those priorities include limiting
who can authorize new charter schools in the district and
exempting IPS from the one Dollar Law, which allows charter
schools to buy or lease an UNNUS school building for
a dollar. The two leaders released these recommendations a day
(27:40):
before the Alliance is scheduled to take its final vote
on a list of proposals.
Speaker 12 (27:44):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
So they're taking their final vote tonight at six o'clock
at the City County Building on Like you said, a
list of proposed I mean.
Speaker 6 (27:55):
It's not just five yeah that they're recommending. Yeah, but
it's one of them. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
No, No, I'm just saying multiple ones. Hold that thought.
We got to get to a break and we'll be
right back. He I don't know if it's on his
end or whatever.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
He sounds like it's starting to I called that. Yep,
I called that. I don't know what that is. Yea,
it was real high pitched.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
I'm like, and we are back with Community Connection. Uh
Swift be Swift Hot one hundred point nine. Our sister
(28:46):
station is here with us producing for all this week
for the vacationing Eric Garnes. We were talking to our
contributing analyst James Patterson, and as things sometimes do, when
a little James, you sounded like a chipmunk for a
second or two.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
There, I know. So what I did was I made
some adjustments to my phone and hopefully I don't sound
like that again. I'm gonna work on it, maybe a
little bit more over the next break, maybe like turn
my phone off and call back. But I don't know
what happened there. I didn't hear it myself. What I
(29:22):
was told by a texture who texted me that that's
what I found it like. So I don't want to
sound like Alvin and the Chipmunk.
Speaker 13 (29:29):
You know.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
Dave was their manager, Alvin and the Chipmunks. That was
an act, right, they were.
Speaker 14 (29:37):
An act tee.
Speaker 6 (29:38):
It was a cotune. I don't know. I didn't watch
that thing. I watched it a little bit, but hey,
I'm not the expert on that.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
I probably watched too much TV, too much stuff running
around in my hand. So Dave was their manager, and
he would be the one to always.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Say, oh, yeah, I definitely wat.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Yeah it was still. Oh it's still running. Still that
thing still run so very quickly. You want to make
sure that everyone is aware that there is a free
food giveaway underway right now at the Mount Olive Church
out right there on the corner of sixteenth in Montcalm.
The exact address, James, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:19):
It is ten oh three West sixteenth one sixth Street,
ten sixteen West one sixth Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. And they'll
be right there. He said, they had two fifty, but
one hundred we're gone. So they're going down fast.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Ten sixteen West sixteenth Street, ten sixteen West tes at
West tenth four two or six two two. And if
you're looking for a cross section right there at sixteenth
in Montcalm on the near west side, in fact, that's
where they want you to drive through to kind of
line up there and they'll put the boxes in the
car for you. City former City County Councilor Duke Oliver
(30:59):
has made a very very kind offer that if you
can't get there, he'll come and get you. If you
can't get there, he'll come and get you. All you
have to do is call him. Uh three one seven
two oh one six seven seven zero again three one
seven two zero one six seven seven zero Uh, Douke
Oliver will come and pick you up and take you
to get a box. Now they're not delivering. They're not
(31:21):
going to deliver because they just don't have the capacity
to do that. But if you want to be there,
and if you want to get a box and have
no way of getting there in the next hour, so
because I I dare to think that, I mean, I'm
afraid that if you don't get over there within the
next hour, Yeah, there's not going to be a box,
especially with Hams and all the fixings on the side. Uh,
(31:43):
it's just it's gonna go. Well, and they had two
hundred and fifty, right, two hundred and fifty's.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
To start with, that's what he said, Yeah, yes, Tina, Yeah,
and so an hour in the said possibly one hundred
one hundred were gone. Uh, so that that that minute
was down to around and we're just you know, estimating
around one hundred fifty left. Yeah, if they started with
two fifty and each had one hundred works gone.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
So anyway, there's an opportunity for you. And again we
thank everyone over at Mount Olive for that kind gesture
and hope that as many people that can get over
there will get over there and be able to take
advantage of the ham food boxes. We were talking James, Yeah, James,
I was thinking to do Colliver. No, James, we were
(32:30):
just talking about the Indianapolis Public schools and these this
recommendation from this alliance that I think the way Maggie
Lewis explained it, they the Alliance is coming forward with
these recommendations and these possible proposals to take some of
the sting off of what the legislature was looking to do. Anyway,
(32:54):
you know, a lot of folks aren't buying that. They're
like everybody's after You're just trying to tear it down.
You're just trying to tear up ips, regardless of if
it's a hard landing or a soft landing.
Speaker 11 (33:03):
You know.
Speaker 6 (33:04):
I think that's a good way to put it.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, And so.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Yeah, it's it's it's it's interesting. But anyway, you know,
the other thing I didn't like about this the Alliance
had their or the Alliance meetings were there were public
there was public input that was taken for the Alliance meetings,
but like I think the last one, which was probably Monday,
it was from like noon to to two, you know,
(33:30):
for the public to come and offer public comment and
then to.
Speaker 6 (33:33):
Now people work during the day.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Most I feel like a setup.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
You're not gonna get as many people as you normally
would because it's at noon and I can't take off
work to come down here, and I need to express
what I need to express.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
You limit the limit the backlash, and you absolutely just
limit the number of people that can be there. Now
they will, I'm sure have quite a logical explanation for
why it had to be during the week from noon
to two. Absolutely, you know, looking at it realistically, is
just not one that's favorable to public input.
Speaker 6 (34:04):
It's just not I mean, be Swifts there said he
couldn't go. Tina, you wouldn't be there unless you were
doing the show remote from there, because your show is
from one to three, so and you know, it's doubtful
that I could have gone down there. So you're cutting
out a whole lot of folks who are very interested
in this issue. At least they the ones who want
(34:26):
to learn about it and tell others like us what's
going on. You're cutting out a whole lot of people
from being down there.
Speaker 10 (34:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
So, sadly, whether the state lawmakers on this committee reject
or accept, even if they accept some accept some of
the proposals and recommendations. Sadly, it looks like there, you know,
IPS is just being pulled apart one block at a time.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
It looks like they are trying to well disenfranchised really
the good word the people who vote for the elected
or IPS, because IPS board would report to this if
it turns out this way, if they picked a model
to this advisory this overall education Advisory board, and you know,
(35:11):
so they are going to be subservient to this board
over them. So here we go again. It's like the
charter school model generally in you know, in general, and
that is that there's no accountability. They do stuff. You
don't have a way to hold their feet to the
fire because they don't have to answer.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
To the bubblet they don't. And and one of the
recommendations is to get that shared transportation uh thing going
to between the charters and and.
Speaker 6 (35:46):
Yeah, that's that was one. That was the mandatory transportation
participation by all the schools. They were trying to uh
Mayor Hawkstead and and uh at Leastia Johnson and the yeah,
uh yeah of IPS. She wanted to uh, they wanted
to put forward this plan where they believe that all
(36:09):
school types within the district. They stated, ips run, innovation schools,
and charter schools, all of them should be required to
participate in a transportation system or forfeit forfeit their share
of property tax distributions. And by the way, yeah, by
the way, the legislature in that legislation that they passed
(36:30):
setting up the i l EA, in that legislation, they
are gonna let charter schools or they want to share
in property taxes for the first time, you know, in
the state's history, share in property taxes when as we said,
we just stated, there is no accountability their boards. Student
(36:52):
are not elected. They don't have to return your phone call.
They don't have to care who you are, who your
grandmother is. They don't you know, they just do stuff
on their own. And again same thing with Washington d C.
Not that make it out nationale, but they don't want
to follow the rules. They won't don't want a democratic republic,
they don't want voter participation, and this is something that
we have to get ahead on.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Yeah. Well, here's the thing. It's not true to who
they said that they were initially and it's not true
to their initial mission. Transportation to the best of my
knowledge and to my understanding, is one of the largest
budgets that IPS has to reconcile every single year. It's
extremely expensive, you know, extremely expensive transportation. And our guy
(37:38):
Cameron Riddle, who he's involved in that, he would know
a whole lot more than what we do and the
and the realism. But that's not how charters first represented themselves.
They came on board saying we can do what they
do better and cheaper and more, you know, more effectively,
and we don't need you know, X, Y and z,
And then you know, the longer they're in existence, well
(38:00):
you would like to have this, We would like to
why why even be a charter?
Speaker 5 (38:03):
Then?
Speaker 6 (38:04):
Yes? See why what what's the what's the point? I mean?
I think part of the part of the the the
goal is I never thought Republicans would would would would
would go this bridge too far because when I was
growing up, the Republican Party stood for limited government for
(38:25):
you know, no taxation without representation. That's why they threw
that mess to the bottom of the Boston Harbor. Uh,
those three hundred sum creates of TEA. No taxation without representation.
So you want people to elect id as school board members?
Is what's this plan proposing and that you can't they
have no say. Their board members are beholding to a
(38:48):
board above them. That's diminishing voter disenfranchisement, diminishing the power
of the voter.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Yes, it truly is. And and and I had charter schools.
I have nothing against charter school but be who you are,
and be who you say you are and stay true
to your mission.
Speaker 13 (39:06):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
And how you outlined everything as to how you were
going to come on board and how you were going
to operate, changing in the middle of the game, changing
the story in the middle of the game. That's going
to cost money that will come from those who have
always been you know I PS has always been IPS.
Charter schools need to remain charter schools. And for the
lawmakers to get in the middle of that, it's crazy.
Speaker 6 (39:28):
Yeah, that's terrible. Yeah, yeah it is.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
And again I charters, fine, I agree, I.
Speaker 4 (39:34):
Like them, They're okay, But we stay in your lane
because you had your own world, you know what I mean.
You don't have to cross the end and create this
family that we weren't.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
Looking for exactly, And now we got to pay for.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Now we're paying for pay for.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Because you can't you can no longer afford it, or
you say you can no longer for to operate. And again,
I have nothing against h charter schools, but I love
I love the way you said that. That's very concise
standing Lane. Yeah, do what you say you're gonna do.
Speaker 6 (39:58):
And there is a population that they and then they
serve well they do, but they don't trying. That's right.
But like y'all said, when they started, it was like, oh,
we don't need your money. We don't need your money.
We just you know, to educate our children. And we
want a free handed that. We don't need tax because
we get tax money where there's rules now, but now
y'all want tax money.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
Okay, there you change accountability. There you representation. Let's go back.
Let's go to the phone lines. Uh, who do we
have waiting? Swift?
Speaker 3 (40:26):
We have Jeff Jeffrey, Jeffers, Jeff what's going on here?
Speaker 6 (40:31):
Everybody?
Speaker 15 (40:32):
How you doing right?
Speaker 3 (40:33):
All right?
Speaker 6 (40:34):
Jeff? Good?
Speaker 14 (40:35):
And I would uh we'll be swift. Yeah, I have
nothing charter school, but it's just thing your laying and
see who you're going to do, you know, and they
don't try to usurp everything and take over you know,
because you have an agenda. Okay, you have an agenda,
and it really is all about indocrination. But if you're
about doing the right thing, really, since you're by educative
(40:55):
true education, I ain't got an issue with that, so
you know, it's all good. Like you said, you know,
just stay in your lane. And you know, ten, I
want to and and h James, I'm so glad you're
here today, and I want to clear something. Not because
there's an individual out there. I ain't gonna mention his name,
but I will just say this, he's upsessed with Andre Carson.
But I ain't gonna mention his name. And uh, he says,
(41:19):
you know, I get you miss quoted, but ain't the
first time he miss quote the things that I said
what I called yesterday, and I said, uh, you know,
black folks need to just stand back and do nothing
because uh, this passed the election and so much people
are having buyers remorse. No, that's not what I said.
I'm just saying we shouldn't go out there and demonstrate
and get our heads cracked open so others to reap
(41:39):
the benefits of our struggle. Okay, Back in the sixties,
you know we got our heads busted in and others
reap the benefits. White women, they got firmative action, latinos
and all that, you know, and then these same groups,
same groups benefits. Then they want to be anti black. No, No,
you got have to put some skin in the game. Yeah,
(42:00):
we're gonna vote, Yeah we're gonna vote, but we're gonna
educate ourselves and do some self love and give it
to our spirituality because there's time for these other groups,
white people especially, put some skin in the game because
you're probably responsible. Well, we got just tirant in the
White House. Okay, And I want to say, and I'm
gonna say one thing. No, I don't hate white people,
(42:22):
but I do hate white supremacy. Now, if you don't
like that, I just say, and you're white, you're probably
a white supremacist.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
Excuse me.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
No, No, I said no, that's fair. I said that's fair.
Speaker 6 (42:33):
No.
Speaker 12 (42:33):
I mean if.
Speaker 14 (42:35):
I got white people in my fam. I got white
people in my family and love them dearly. I don't
hate white people, but I do hate white supremacist. And
if you got a problem with if if you're a
white person, you got a problem with what I just said,
nine times out of ten, you're probably a white supremacist. Okay,
I think only a white supremaces they have an issue
with something I just said. So uh, I know when
I say what black people need to do, we need
(42:57):
to focus on our community. Yeah, we're gonna hit the vote.
We're gonna hit voting boots on twenty twenty six. Yeah.
Project twenty twenty six is to get these to get
the Pete Hags.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
X out of here.
Speaker 14 (43:07):
Hopefully we get be impeached and that JD Van that
that that and anyway cross dress whatever he is. Marco
Rubio Marco rousebyt has qualified to be Secretary of stated
I am the the U to be a bus driver whatever.
Speaker 5 (43:23):
I know.
Speaker 14 (43:23):
That make a bit of sense, you know, But I'm
just saying, we got a bunch of mediocre white guys,
you know what in this administration media. I don't want
to hear them about d e I, James.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
I don't want to hear them more about well, you know,
a merit.
Speaker 6 (43:36):
Come on, James, is it?
Speaker 5 (43:38):
What do you think?
Speaker 14 (43:39):
What's your take?
Speaker 2 (43:40):
James?
Speaker 14 (43:40):
And he's got what's your take? Pete Hagg said Marco Ruby.
These guys are bums, right.
Speaker 6 (43:46):
Well yeah, yeah, thanks ye, but I we know what
that what they are they, the people who are surrounding Trump,
are pushing a race conscious agenda. They are I think
unqualified to do, but they know what they're doing. The
(44:08):
guy that's the head of the Office of Management and
Budget wrote much of the project twenty twenty five, so
they have a new agenda.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Look.
Speaker 6 (44:18):
I was just looking on the screen, uh, President Trump,
and within the last hour ordered a blockade of all
oil tankers going from into Venezuela.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
Stealing that oil. He needs to stop doing that. That
that is staft, isn't it. I mean maybe I'm misunderstanding
it all, but confiscating tankers, you're taking it.
Speaker 6 (44:44):
I mean, remember, by law, the FEU files must be released.
Something has to be released this Friday, Friday.
Speaker 5 (44:54):
Law.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Yeah, law.
Speaker 6 (44:56):
So I told you that he would do what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (45:01):
He will do any abstraction. You look at the shiny
object over here, whatever, because.
Speaker 6 (45:06):
When that stuff comes what you know, depending on what
they released, they're gonna try to redact as much as
they can. But I'm telling you, this man has to
be watched. But Jeff is right. They have a whole
nother agenda. I heard you a little bit yesterday. But
I was running around in nineteen stores you had you
had gg gg gg brown brown on yesterday and she
(45:29):
was talking about, you know, the Project twenty twenty five.
A lot of it has not been implemented, but that
ain't stopping them from trying. And that's what they're trying
to do. And yes, uh, Steve what's.
Speaker 13 (45:41):
His last name, Steve?
Speaker 6 (45:42):
Uh no, no, no, no, the deputy chief of.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
Staff, Oh, Stephen Miller, Steven Miller seven Miller.
Speaker 5 (45:50):
Yeah, he's racist.
Speaker 6 (45:55):
Hitler's uh you know S S one one. Yes, yes,
look at what they're doing with the with the immigrants
and the people who aren't impigrants and the russ and
US citizens and no due process and I mean it's
just crazy and there's they just are law loss and
so this is why the people are going to vote
(46:16):
against them big time. But that ain't stopping them from
doing what they're trying to do in the meantime.
Speaker 1 (46:22):
Yeah, I I I don't think it's hyperbole or an
exaggeration in the least to say that this is the
you know, people used to say, well, this is one
of the most lawless and corrupt administration's presidential administrations ever
in US history. This is the most I don't think,
one of the most, the most lawless and corrupt presidential
(46:43):
administrations in the history the short history of the United
States of America. There's nothing else that even compares, it
comes close to them.
Speaker 6 (46:50):
Nothing. He's worse than Nixon wors and that was Richard Milhouse.
Nixon tricky dick.
Speaker 1 (46:57):
Tricky, tricky work like a cub scout of we below,
you know, not even not even a cub scout. But yeah,
so we well. But James, it's interesting because I think
he's what he's doing with this redistricting push and trying
to get more congressional seats carved out of any place
he can get them carved out of. I think he's
trying to avoid the I guess, in many ways the
(47:19):
unlikely occurrence of an impeachment if they lose both the
House and the sent as. Yeah, he knows. But here
here's my question. How much if if they can just
get an impeachment and a conviction, because you got to
have both and and he's removed, who would it would
would it be then Advance and then the the vice
(47:39):
president would be Johnson, right, and then then the the
the Speaker of the House would have to be elected, right.
Speaker 6 (47:48):
Yeah, The Speaker of the House would have to be elected,
but a lot going to depend on the the elections.
In the Speaker that the House would be Johnson, and
he's got to be read.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
Actually, yeah, the Speaker of the House could be Haqeme Jeffries,
depending on the outcome of the election, because if the
Democrats get the House, that's right, So it wouldn't necessarily
have to be the same party.
Speaker 6 (48:12):
Right, it wouldn't. The speagure of the House would be
the vice president.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
But the vice president would be elevated to the presidency
if the president is impeached.
Speaker 6 (48:23):
Yes, yes, ma'am, that's the way it goes.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
I was just wanted to double check constitutionally. Okay, all right,
well we're gonna we're gonna take another quick break here
and be back with more. That's something interesting to ponder
because I was wondering, if, for whatever reason, all the
dominals fall in place, what would what would we be
looking at in a matter of months.
Speaker 3 (48:43):
That's interesting. I ever thought about that. Yeah, yeah, that
could be very interesting.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
You could get that.
Speaker 6 (48:49):
You could have the president one party and the vice
president of another, and you know, I'd have to research
thatif that's never been done before, that would be the law.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
That would be Yeah, that would have to be the
law the way the constitution is. Okay, we'll be right back,
(49:21):
and we are back. We're back with THEMA connection heading
into our second hour. Our contributing analyst James Patterson is
with us. Be Swift from our sister station Hot one
hundred point nine also here producing for the week. Eric
Garn's on vacation. Yeah, James, we were just kind of
going over a couple of possibilities, you know, a couple
of possible scenarios that you know, maybe might have seemed
(49:43):
on Mars several months ago but now and Swift made
a good point. Trump keeps doing more and more and
more that something. You know, people, I don't know how
much more people can tolerate, especially if those he's hitting
keep start hitting back, meaning other countries that he's stealing
(50:03):
from and shooting a.
Speaker 6 (50:05):
Yeah, he is supposed to address the nation tonight, so
we you know, we I know, it's like when I
first saw that, I was like, I ain't but you know,
he may announce something like we're going to start ground
operations in Venezuela or whatever. Who knows. However, Governor Braun
(50:29):
said something in an interview with Fox fifty nine. I
believe it was yesterday. They didn't have a time on
a stamp on it, but they just said it was
an interview, and he said he was like lambasting or
in a nice way, he was trying to be diplomatic
about it. The Republicans in the Senate who voted not
(50:49):
the redistrict in Indiana, And he said, well, you know,
the White House wanted this in Indiana was the only
one who didn't comply. The only state, No, they weren't.
Kansas didn't do it, Nebraska didn't do it, and I
don't know. Missouri is fighting it, and there are several
(51:11):
states that did not do it. So he mud about that.
But he's trying to browbe people, and people are not
going to just put up for these shenanigans. You know,
We'll see how long it takes the Republicans who his minions,
who are just blindly following as president, to wake up
and listen to the people. He has a thirty some
percent the president approval rating, so most people, even people
(51:34):
of his own party, do not agree with the policies
that are being put forth by this administration.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Well, I also find the timing ironic. I'm sure you
do as well, Swift, that this nationwide address comes less
what comes what? Forty eight hours before he is supposed to.
Speaker 6 (51:54):
Release us Epsteine files.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
This is definitely going to be spending narrative, Sace. I'm crazy.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
So I'm talking about like he is great at trying
to figure out how to sweep things under the rug.
And tonight there will be a lot of fact checking
from CNN. There will be a lot of things probably
said that make us say wow and that we forget
what's supposed to happen.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
On what Friday? That's Friday the nineteenth, right, Yes, so
it's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 1 (52:21):
Yeah, Well, I you know, because we have to be here,
Swift and talk. I'm gonna I'm gonna watch and listen
to as much as I can tolerate.
Speaker 3 (52:32):
Yeah, the rest.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
The rest I'm going to have to read.
Speaker 3 (52:34):
Yeah, I'm the reader of it because I can't tolerate
a lot.
Speaker 4 (52:37):
I don't want to see them people standing up clapping
like he said some of the most amazingest things where
y'all don't even believe what that man said. But y'all
just want to stand up and clap so you don't
get in trouble tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (52:47):
These folks got to realize they're on the sinking ship.
They need to know. They got to really do you
think they know?
Speaker 4 (52:52):
You see the way that man reacted to all the
people that voted against redistrict in Indiana. They know their
ship is sinking and sinking fast. All of them were
very scared.
Speaker 1 (53:02):
Yes, yeah they should be, and that you know, I'm
glad they've sobered up, so to speak. And a whole
lot of other folks need to sober up or they're
gonna go down with the ship, you know, just they are,
I mean, And that's like g GG and I were
both saying gg Brown one of the things we were saying.
And we're talking about folks that just for whatever reason,
(53:24):
they will not get off of it. They're gonna they're
gonna ride, you know, they're gonna ride or die with Trump.
And then those who say, oh, I didn't really mean it.
I voted for him, but I didn't really mean it,
or I have voters remorse. She and I both agreed.
I think you did too, Swift. I don't I don't
buy any of that. No, I don't buy any of
the remorse that they're sorry that they didn't or this
(53:44):
is not what I voted for.
Speaker 4 (53:45):
The other people that're sorry or those is being super
effected because you being pushed out this country, or your
medicaid and pills is gone up, you lost your job,
the farmers ain't getting the money that they thought they
was getting no more. Now y'all feel stupid. Y'all, don't
feel sorry. You feel stupid.
Speaker 3 (54:02):
That's what it is.
Speaker 4 (54:03):
You got yoke and egg on your face and you
don't know how to react. You feel stupid, and it's
okay to feel stupid.
Speaker 6 (54:10):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, like like you said, they you know,
they feel stupid because and regret and you know, like
you said, I mean some of them don't regret it.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
But I don't think it's a regret. I think it's
like Swift said, I think it's embarrassing.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
It's embarrassing.
Speaker 4 (54:30):
Like I know who I picked, and I know why
I picked them, but now I done picked them in
now it's affecting me.
Speaker 3 (54:36):
This ain't what I signed up for.
Speaker 12 (54:38):
Ah Man.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
Maybe you know what I mean. Again, you you did
what you did because you wanted to not a question.
Speaker 6 (54:43):
It's affecting my cousin who has had a government job
for fifteen years Ultimore and now he doesn't have. You know,
it's affecting my daughter who's in college and now she's
playing double for her meals or you know outside of
the dormitory where she gets free meals if she's on scholarship.
You know, it's affecting my son who wants to go
to college, and yet I'm looking at the tuition proposed tuition,
(55:07):
and it's like a third more than what we paid
for our daughter. Yeah, it's affecting everybody. And so you know,
I mean, just like these Republicans here in Indiana, I
want to come push, come to show, and it's like
I might not get re elected if I go with
this guy. Like you guys said at first, the rats
are gonna start, even the rats who you know, they
(55:29):
can't swim, They're gonna start jumping overboard.
Speaker 1 (55:32):
So rats can't swim, I don't.
Speaker 12 (55:40):
I know.
Speaker 6 (55:40):
They can go under some water in a pond, but
in an ocean, I don't know. Maybe dude, they got guilts.
Speaker 5 (55:46):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (55:47):
You might be right, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (55:49):
Uh huh, Okay, let's see. I don't know. I just
you know, when I've heard the phrase like rats off
the Titanic, rats can't I guess they couldn't swim. I
don't want to get that close to him to find out. Yeah, yep,
yeah yeah, so uh yeah, we gotta call him.
Speaker 3 (56:09):
Marvis is on the line today. Let's go see what Marvis. Marvis?
Are you hung up on James callback?
Speaker 11 (56:15):
Sorry?
Speaker 5 (56:16):
Hello, Yeah, I heard him.
Speaker 15 (56:21):
I'm well, I heard Swift talking.
Speaker 6 (56:22):
I thought he's talking to me. Anyway, I just wanted
to chime in.
Speaker 15 (56:26):
You know, I think, uh, mister Trump's gonna be on
uh TV tonight to Gaslight America.
Speaker 6 (56:32):
Yeah, anticipation of those.
Speaker 15 (56:35):
Epstein files coming uh out on Friday and whatever they're
going to show.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 15 (56:42):
But at the end of the day, you were talking.
Speaker 2 (56:44):
About the i p s there.
Speaker 12 (56:45):
You know.
Speaker 15 (56:46):
At first, I thought that there was some more organizations
that were rippen that were really about trying to.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
You know, improve education in the city.
Speaker 15 (56:56):
But the more I look at the team, I think,
you all, it's just about the destruct of IPS and I.
Speaker 6 (57:01):
Don't get it.
Speaker 15 (57:02):
I don't get why, because I mean, they to me,
they've they've adjusted and and every way they could to
fit with the educational landscape.
Speaker 1 (57:11):
You know that they faced them.
Speaker 15 (57:16):
It's like, what more do they expect them to do?
Speaker 6 (57:19):
And like and I believe a team.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
You're right.
Speaker 15 (57:21):
I think you said something that was you said they're
not buying it, no, because they have showed and I
don't follow everything on line our research. You know, Maggie's
kind of been in this fight and the wish I
don't really because her child went to Pike and she
lives in Pike.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
But she's kind of been on this fight against IPS.
Speaker 15 (57:38):
For a long a long time from what people have
showed me and the people she's been aligned with. So
you know, I'm not one hundred percent to her that
they're not all working together what I'm trying to say,
but you know, IPS finally came out and said let.
Speaker 3 (57:54):
Us be authorized.
Speaker 15 (57:55):
They're trying whatever they can and I just hope that
you know, and I saw where they in the article
I read to they were it says staying want all
i PS schools. If it's about education, why wouldn't you
fight for all schools to be a tonomous If it's
about you know, schools having their own.
Speaker 1 (58:11):
Boards as Indiana give to give a hoot about what
happens with the Indianapolis public sports.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
Please don't come to Pipe. Yeah, and you know what's
with what I think is going to happen.
Speaker 15 (58:26):
I said, when you start messing with people school if
people live in Pike and they live in Washington Township
and they see what they're doing to i p S.
And if the opponents and what they're seeing of what
we see is going on, get together. One thing people
don't like for you to mess with is their schools.
And you can see people start losing seats because if
(58:47):
I'm in i p S or I'm telling Pike Township
repor residents, look what they're doing over in i PS.
You think they're not gonna come for you, uh, because
what all the legislature is doing and they don't care.
The end goal is to get to the privatization with
private schools and you know religion.
Speaker 6 (59:06):
And I won't get into all that.
Speaker 15 (59:08):
They just using their pitting two groups of blacks against
each other. So the Republicans say, well, look we all
these charter schools are serving black kids, and you can't
say we're trying to destroy public education for black.
Speaker 1 (59:20):
Why are you in black communities? Then why aren't sharing?
Why are you not? Why are you why are you
all the money.
Speaker 15 (59:31):
And not getting is uh and I'll shut up after
this team, I think that I thought they were being
unfair when they when people are said they're using black
faces to really do this, But they are. They are,
and it's sad to watch it. Like I said, I
was giving everybody the benefit of the doubt.
Speaker 3 (59:47):
But the more I've learned, the more I've.
Speaker 15 (59:49):
Listened to people, because that's one important.
Speaker 2 (59:51):
Thing you have to do.
Speaker 6 (59:51):
You have to listen.
Speaker 15 (59:53):
It's just about the destruction for Republicans of public education
for black kids and and and they're using our old
people to help do it.
Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
Thank you, Peter, Thank you well, said Marvin. Well said,
appreciate it. Uh So, James are you there?
Speaker 6 (01:00:09):
Yeah? Can you hear me? Yeah? I had to. I mean,
my phone just dropped. I don't know what's going on,
but I agree one hundred percent what Marr said. Yeah, absolutely,
I heard all of it. And uh, just to answer
a question, just on the side, we're not going there,
but just answer question. You were right, Yes, rats can
swim under there. They are excellent swimmers and can hold
(01:00:32):
their breath for almost three minutes while swimming. Rats have
physical adaptations such as powerful tails and water resistant coats
that enable them to swim proficiently for short distances. However,
they are not aquatic animals and cannot stay submerged for
long periods, typically eating to surface for air within minutes.
They can swim up through little mile.
Speaker 1 (01:00:53):
So you know, then if they can only stay underwater
for three minutes and can only swim up to a mile,
that was a wrap. Yeah, So okay, well it's good
to know though, I now we know.
Speaker 6 (01:01:08):
Yeah, giving you all that little piece of information.
Speaker 1 (01:01:11):
There Another story is kind of developing, and we'll follow this.
I'm not going to get too deep into it, I guess,
but you know the whole Thomas Cook, the Thomas Cook,
the mayor's chief deputy, the former chief of staff for
Mayor Joe Hawk said, and you know how Cook was
accused by several women of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, just
(01:01:33):
he was just accused. There was one in particular that
was at a city county council meeting that was forcibly
dragged out along with some other people after she had
exceeded her time at the podium. As she was trying
to share with the council what her experiences were and
(01:01:53):
how she felt disrespected by not only Cook but by
Mayor hawk Set and was trying to share with the
council what had happened. Unfortunately she went past her time.
Coun Council President voposly asked that she and others be
removed forcibly removed. Bad picture, bad press, bad everything. And
(01:02:15):
so now she has come back with a lawsuit. She's
suing the council, the mayor, and the Marion Kini Sheriff's
Department for damages I guess associated with that incident and
the denial of her allowing her to have her free
speech to share with the council what she had endured
(01:02:38):
under Thomas Cook when he was employed by the City
of Indianapolis.
Speaker 6 (01:02:42):
Yeah, well, like you said, it's just a bad look.
And every time an incident like this happens where some
people have to be removed from the city council meeting,
who are trying to bring this issue back to the
public's eye about Thomas Cook and how he was a
apparently allowed to get away with a bunch of things.
Speaker 1 (01:03:03):
Yeahal harassment, just you know, Okay, and then no, no, no,
And what I'm saying is and the mayor accused again,
these are all accusations, the mayor accused of turning a
deaf ear in a blind.
Speaker 6 (01:03:21):
He had been informed of this, that this must be
his campaign manager or once with his campaign campaign associates.
So it's just a bad look, I mean, and the
mayor he just he's trying to get past it, but
it just seems to keep pulling him back. Yeah. I
would think, you know, some definitive action, maybe a press
(01:03:44):
conference where he lays us all out and says, look,
I'm sorry, this will never happen again. But now that
he's ensued, his lawyers will probably tell them, no, you
can't go out there and say anything that that that'll you.
Speaker 1 (01:03:56):
And it's still following counselor the council president because he
was the one that authorized the Sheriff's Department to go
ahead and act on the behalf, you know, and in
terms of removing forcibly removing these people from the chamber.
So it's something that's that that's going to follow him.
And perhaps he should go on a PR tour as
(01:04:17):
well and maybe explained So I I don't know, Yah, mayor,
and more explanation, just more more damage control.
Speaker 6 (01:04:26):
Yeah, I mean it's just something they were forcing to
do it. Those people were probably bent on causing a
disservice so that they will would be removing.
Speaker 1 (01:04:34):
You know what, though, James, We've been to enough city
county council meetings to know that there are times when
they give even though somebody is over the time limit,
if it's and the and and the fact that if
it's a very very sensitive, highly charged or highly emotional,
they'll give them a little bit extra, like they may say, hey,
your time is up. Uh, and then they may say
what they have to say and then go on. But
(01:04:55):
I that that was a discretionary call. I mean, but
to cut it off exactly at the time, and then
you know when she kept talking to have her forcibly removed,
I think she's suing behind that as well. So that's
there's a there's a lot, there's a lot to it,
and it's unfortunate. I I just think it's unfortunate for her,
it's unfortunate for the Sheriff's department, it's unfortunate for a
(01:05:17):
council president Olsily. I mean, it's it's unfortunate all the
way around. And I don't know how this one's going
to be resolved, but it is what it is. It's
a lawsuit in the making there, James. So she yea
tort claim is an intent to sue?
Speaker 11 (01:05:31):
Is that what that is?
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:05:33):
It is, And like you said, it was discretionary. I
was in there. I don't know the exact time that
they gave them, you know, maybe.
Speaker 1 (01:05:41):
Yeah, I was watching the proceedings and he gave her
the exact time, and then I think a couple of
uh that your time is up, your time is up.
I think he may have said I. I don't remember
exactly how many times he said your time is up
and she insisted on talking or she continued to talk.
Speaker 5 (01:05:57):
Uh, But.
Speaker 1 (01:06:00):
That's that's that's a judgment call. That's a judgment.
Speaker 6 (01:06:02):
Yeah. And yeah, I mean you're not allowed to disrupt
the public meaning to a point. You know, people do
it all the time to get their point across. But
once you get to a point, they can like have
you removed?
Speaker 1 (01:06:14):
They And I don't know, again, I don't know how
that escalated, and I don't know to I just but anyway,
we'll follow that.
Speaker 6 (01:06:22):
The most damage that's coming from it is that it's
on the news and that we're talking about it, and
that's that's not good for Mayor Joe, hawks Mayor Joe.
Speaker 1 (01:06:30):
Or council president. I'm telling you, because this is getting
it's gonna but if he decided decides to run, it's
gonna be somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
If I'm your competition, I'm using it.
Speaker 1 (01:06:42):
Video didn't wait to run that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:44):
Do you want somebody that doesn't want your voice to
be heard? Don't vote for.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
You know it's dirty, and that's gonna be the game
that's played.
Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
It is again, if it's me running against you, I'm
running it.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
So you gotta get you got to get ahead of
it and get that damage control going absolutely, because.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
That's gonna be the first thing to park.
Speaker 6 (01:07:02):
The fact that he said he wasn't gonna run again,
that's another thing.
Speaker 3 (01:07:08):
H Oh, he's running.
Speaker 4 (01:07:11):
I think he runs. I think he knows like he
does a lot to stay to keep his name up.
And I ain't gonna say he can't lose. But I
think for a lot of people, yeah, you've seen it,
you probably didn't care, you know what I mean? Because
he comes to your church, he comes to this he's
a cool guy, like I have none against him, my guy,
(01:07:31):
you know what I'm saying. But if I'm him, I'm
taking the chances. I don't care what you say. I'm running,
but I got.
Speaker 1 (01:07:39):
To lose, all right. We'll keep an eye on that
one too. And there it is. So uh, let's switch
gears here a little bit we have on the line
with us. We talked about it in the first hour.
He is here for the second hour. He has been
(01:08:00):
in our community for a number of years. He is
a legendary DJ, former police officer, former publisher at the
Indianapolis Recorder, and current podcaster, a host of Diversity Focus
Today podcast and probably a couple of other things that
I just forgot to add in there. But he is
here with us, the legend himself, Ricky solid Gold Clark. Well, Ricky,
(01:08:25):
welcome back. How are you doing.
Speaker 5 (01:08:26):
Today, Tina and crew? I am doing well. Thank you
for asking.
Speaker 1 (01:08:32):
Yeah, yeah, now where are you? Where are you?
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
Rick? Okay, I'm back now.
Speaker 2 (01:08:37):
And that procedure tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
Oh okay, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
Yeah, Am I am I too loud?
Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
No, no, no, go ahead, no, I'm just saying you
said you had a procedure. I hope that that all goes, well,
I did I know you?
Speaker 5 (01:08:49):
You're in and out of town a lot.
Speaker 13 (01:08:52):
I'm back here in the icebox here in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
Uh huh.
Speaker 5 (01:08:56):
And so that's kimorrow.
Speaker 13 (01:08:58):
Also, when I finished that girl next week, I think
I'm going back south. I'd be like the birds going
south for the winner.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
Okay, okay, indeed, so Ricky, uh so how much did
what do you do? You split the time? Like half
and half?
Speaker 11 (01:09:15):
You think?
Speaker 6 (01:09:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 13 (01:09:16):
Uh yeah, about half and half and half in uh Atlanta,
half in Indy and then a little piece in uh
in uh Phoenix, Arizona. So yeah, good, We've got a
couple of projects going over there down there. You you
may hear from me when I'm out there in fIF six,
when it's when it's cold as hecking up here in
(01:09:39):
January and February.
Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
Yeah, So tell us about your late you know, you
have entered into podcasting, the world of podcasting. Tell us
about it. How long you've been You've been less than
a year?
Speaker 6 (01:09:49):
Right, Yeah, we've been We've we've been doing it less
than a year.
Speaker 5 (01:09:53):
We started I think in March of this year, and.
Speaker 13 (01:09:56):
So we've been doing the podcast and TV and YouTube
and Facebook so if you go to YouTube, you'll find
Diversity Focus Today with Ricky Klark. I think we've done
like thirty four shows, and so you can watch that
at any time. We were on Channel eight for since March.
(01:10:19):
Now we're on hiatus from that, but you can.
Speaker 5 (01:10:22):
Get us still on podcasts and on Facebook.
Speaker 13 (01:10:25):
And so we're just, you know, trying to roll with
the tides and keep tabs of what's going on, both
educational entertainment.
Speaker 5 (01:10:34):
And certainly political. I've often said that.
Speaker 13 (01:10:39):
The comments that we've made and being critical of the administration,
the Trump administration and even the Broad administration, I don't
expect to get any Christmas cards and either one of them,
unless I get one full of ashes.
Speaker 1 (01:10:54):
So well, I think the same would go for here
if they could find us. I don't know which studio
they'd send the ashes to. But so, Ricky, I didn't
want to let the year go past without talking to you.
This is the This twenty twenty five is the one
(01:11:14):
and thirty year anniversary of the Indianapolis Recorder, and you
are a huge part of that history. You are a
huge part that history. Not were you are a huge
part of that. You're not with them anymore. But tell
us about your contributions, especially the publishing part as far
as the Recorder.
Speaker 13 (01:11:34):
Well, my contributions would be the fact that I think
it was I don't know how long ago now we.
Speaker 5 (01:11:44):
Talking with Bill Mains.
Speaker 13 (01:11:45):
At the time Bill ended up I sold the magazine,
the Indiana Minority Business Magazine to the Recorder, and as.
Speaker 5 (01:11:55):
Part of the arrangement, I was to.
Speaker 13 (01:12:00):
Help him run the recorder of the magazine division four year.
Well that ended up being like almost five years doing that.
So that was my contribution because he wanted to have
another arm of the recorders, and the magazine fits like
a glove, and so that's how I ended my involvement
with the Recorder. Naturally, helping the magazine and certainly helping
(01:12:23):
the newspaper was part of the deal, and I enjoyed
it being part of that history, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:12:29):
And I think what they're celebrating.
Speaker 1 (01:12:33):
And thirty yeah, yeah, the end of this year. Yeah,
the end of this year will end the celebration. They've
had a you know, a year long celebration and observance.
And we you know, we have our sports guy that
comes on once a week when he can, Danny Bridges,
and he's been with them and part of their history
as well. You have a big part because you you
(01:12:55):
were part of the expansion of the newspaper. I guess
their profile, I mean their footprint because you brought publishing,
another form of publishing to that that newspaper.
Speaker 5 (01:13:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:13:08):
I brought the Yeah, the Indi Anim Andari Business magazine
and also UH, the one of the UH approach world
because I have the big award dinner the Champions of Diversity,
and so we negotiated on that and I ended up
selling that to.
Speaker 5 (01:13:24):
Him as well.
Speaker 13 (01:13:25):
So they had not only the Indian Anim Andari Business magazine,
but they the Champions of Diversity, which I understand that
they changed the name for this year, the big celebration.
Speaker 5 (01:13:37):
That that that we have that they have in January.
Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
Would they change the name to now?
Speaker 16 (01:13:43):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (01:13:46):
Now that I should know, But I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
For twenty twenty six, it won't be Champions of Diversity.
Speaker 12 (01:13:53):
No.
Speaker 13 (01:13:53):
No, they changed the name, and and I understand the
reason why, because we're dealing with that with diversity focused today.
The word diversity under this administration, both the state and
the settle is taboo.
Speaker 11 (01:14:06):
Now.
Speaker 13 (01:14:07):
Donald Trump and Governor Brown has made it so public
anything whether it's the schools, the colleges and the universities
or any of their branches have been told not to
support anything with the word of diversity in it, any
diversity at all, which is the shame.
Speaker 5 (01:14:25):
And that's why we go.
Speaker 13 (01:14:26):
We've been fighting them back and forth left and right,
because you know, we work so hard for diversity and
before diversity the hot button with minority. So you know,
I tell folks what I'm speaking with them, and well,
we can't do because the president or the governor here
in Indiana that don't want to support that, tells us
(01:14:47):
not to use any money, no budgets for that.
Speaker 5 (01:14:49):
But I tell them, well, you know, look, Trump is
only going to.
Speaker 13 (01:14:52):
Be in there, you got what three more years and
Brons will have three more years after once we get
into twenty twenty six.
Speaker 5 (01:14:59):
So then where you go to do?
Speaker 1 (01:15:01):
Yeah, you know, well it's a champion. It was the
twenty twenty five, this past year Recorded Media Group and
now this past year of twenty twenty five in January
of twenty twenty five, Champions of Diversity. Now they twenty
twenty six, Uh yeah, Diversity Award winners. Okay, yeah, but
so James you too, were you also were a part
(01:15:24):
of the one and thirty year history of the Recorder. James, Uh, yeah,
you know, can you share with us you know what?
Speaker 6 (01:15:31):
Yeah, I was editor of the Recorder for uh several
other years. I mean several months, maybe a year. I
didn't really keep track of it, but yeah, I worked
with with with Ricky Clark and who did fabulous things
(01:15:51):
for that paper. And I mean he will go down
in history more so than me as a person who
helped us shape the mission of that institution. And I mean,
you know, I mean I remember when Ricky wrote a
column this is just you know, back in my mind,
(01:16:14):
in which he talked about a P P S. Apps
And that was before apps were you know what they
are today. I mean he was like, this is coming.
So he was very futuristic and prophetic about you know,
some of the stuff that he wrote in his column.
What was the name of your column, Ricky, that you wrote,
(01:16:35):
sir in the Recorder?
Speaker 13 (01:16:37):
Do you remember it was a business oriented colin the
minority business. Yeah, we get the name of the magazine
as that for the articles.
Speaker 6 (01:16:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16:49):
With newspapers dropping like flies around the country, almost becoming
obsolete in some areas, what do you attribute the staying
power of the Indianapolis Recorder to especially being uh you know,
primarily black uh black operated, you know, black owned and
operated newspaper. How how do you think has been able
to survive so long?
Speaker 13 (01:17:12):
I think because of their their management team. I mean
they keep they keep things fresh in the paper and
also digitally, and the hard work that they've done and
keeping that name out plus pretty much anybody in Indianapolis,
or in the state of Indiana or in the country.
Speaker 5 (01:17:31):
Knows about the Recorder.
Speaker 13 (01:17:32):
I mean it's one of the oldest newspapers in the country,
and I think that plays a part in keeping the
name out there and keeping the paper alive. Even though
how the other newspapers are going by the wayside, the
Recorders still continues to publish every week.
Speaker 1 (01:17:49):
Yeah, the weekly publication is great. Hey, can I have
both of you stick around for just a second. We're
going to take a quick break right here at the
bottom of the hour and come right back with you.
We'll be right back.
Speaker 5 (01:18:00):
Okay, it's not.
Speaker 1 (01:18:03):
Their phones mm hmmm.
Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
I think it's the Internet at this point.
Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
And we're back with community connection. Our guest Ricky Clark
James Patterson are contributing analystis with us and holding things down.
B Swift from our sister station one hundred point nine
and Swift it's it's worth it's worth a try to
explain what's going on and why there's sounds like chipmunks yunks.
Speaker 4 (01:18:51):
I ran out in the hallway to catch our engineers,
who are doing an amazing job. If y'all don't know,
this is what our second weekend is building now, Tina.
And of course being back there's technical problem. So something
that deals with the Internet is causing not just our stations,
but our talk stations and our sports stations phone lines
to slowly would gradually change the pitch of whoever's calling
(01:19:13):
in voice after so long. So they're trying to figure
out they said, maybe it's a setting. They don't know,
but they're back there trying to work it out. As
you can hear them in the hallway time.
Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
Probably hear them and I turned around, like there's like
several of them hovering over a couple of laptops.
Speaker 4 (01:19:28):
I meant, we already have like eight engineers. Usually I
think there's like three or four more corporate I t
guys in town as well. Yeah, that's who they're they're
dealing with over there is the corporate I t guys,
so you shut the door.
Speaker 3 (01:19:43):
But yeah, that's that's what it is. We're working on it.
Speaker 4 (01:19:46):
Again. Shout out to our amazing team because they're doing
their best to get this fixed. Because again, it's not
just the US problem, it's everybody problem. And yeah, everybody's
voices are slowly but surely changing into chipmunks as.
Speaker 3 (01:19:58):
We get going.
Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
You know, we used to be able to do that
on purpose, Yes you remember that. And I couldn't even
think of how to reduplicate. But we used to think
it was funny and be able to do it on purpose.
But James and Ricky you guys, okay, yeah, you're good. Okay, yeah,
you sat there, you go. It's just that the further
(01:20:20):
we go, the more, for whatever reason is, it's just
gets hyper. So but yeah, Ricky and James Swift and
I were talking in the break among other things, is
like it truly is amazing, given the number of newspapers
that have just folded, that this small black owned community
newspaper continues to thrive and survive. So I, you know,
(01:20:45):
hats off to everybody that had a role in that
because the recorder truly is the real deal.
Speaker 13 (01:20:49):
Okay, yeah, that it is, and it's amazing and that
and maybe they have another one hundred and thirty years worse.
Speaker 1 (01:20:58):
Let's hope, so, let's hope. So so so, Ricky, what
what can we expect from you speaking of the next
one hundred and thirty years. I mean, you have been
You've done it all. You have been a police officer,
you've been a publisher, you've been a you know, one
of the original DJs here on our FM station, WTLCFM.
I mean you paved the road, paved the way for
(01:21:18):
so many of those that have come since you. I mean,
how would what would you say about what your career
and service to the city of Indianapolis has been like.
Speaker 5 (01:21:28):
A right well amazing.
Speaker 13 (01:21:31):
I mean I started back when most that may be
listening wasn't even born. I started at the station in
March of nineteen seventy one. I've explained a lot of
DJs that have gone on to do a lot of
successful things. I'm sure probably be Swift listened to.
Speaker 5 (01:21:49):
Me as he was growing up. Absolutely, I hear that
a lot over the country. Man.
Speaker 13 (01:21:55):
I used to listen to you are my mom and
daddy are my Grandmamma and granddaddy listened to you.
Speaker 1 (01:22:00):
Oh see, there you go getting into households.
Speaker 5 (01:22:03):
So you know, and so it's a compliment and it's
and it's an honor.
Speaker 2 (01:22:08):
I mean, uh, Jerry Wade, God, God blessing his soul.
Speaker 13 (01:22:14):
Jerry used to tape my shows him he was a kid,
and he said, look, I'm I'm using everything that you
had on your show. So I'm gonna tell you right
off the bat, I'm copied and I copied everything.
Speaker 5 (01:22:24):
That you did. I got it all on tape. Cassette
was growing up.
Speaker 1 (01:22:29):
Well, yeah, and that, yeah, that that gets to the
other conversation we were having about people that have known
from day one that this is what they wanted to
do and all they've ever wanted to do. So absolutely,
But Ricky, I don't know that I could say that
because what has you what what is it that you've
always wanted to do and are still doing?
Speaker 5 (01:22:50):
Well?
Speaker 13 (01:22:50):
I guess communication. I mean I keep doing that form
of communication. I mean, you know, I told everybody and
I had retired for a while, and then folks started
knocking on the door and said, well, she tried to
do this and do that, and then a team came
to me.
Speaker 5 (01:23:06):
I called my team.
Speaker 13 (01:23:07):
They said, look, maybe we should do a podcasting and
and YouTube and you know, uh, in fact, you've had
one of my team members on Doctor T Doctor T.
Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
Yeah, she's been on with us a couple of times.
She's fantastic.
Speaker 13 (01:23:19):
Yeah, she's part of the team. And uh, former program
director Brian Wallace is part of our team.
Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
Yeah periodically.
Speaker 5 (01:23:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:23:31):
All we all got together and they basically talked me
into doing this again.
Speaker 5 (01:23:36):
So here I am.
Speaker 13 (01:23:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:23:38):
Indeed, Well, we got a lot of folks that want
to talk to you, I guess or talk anyway. We
got some phone line, so let's go to the phones
real quickly. It depends Sam. That depends man. Go ahead, Sam,

(01:25:11):
joke when it comes to how much they calls and

somebody might need it. Uh, let's go back to the
phone lines.
Speaker 3 (01:26:28):
Let's go back.
Speaker 1 (01:26:29):
That was a question for for Ricky. But Sam just
wanted to offer. Uh yeah, he just wanted to offer
the depends.
Speaker 3 (01:26:36):
All right, let's go see what God got going on?
Got you there?
Speaker 12 (01:26:40):
I am how you doing, mister Russell? So soundly?
Speaker 2 (01:26:45):
Good folks.
Speaker 12 (01:26:46):
Jesus Green said everybody the same to you, And uh,
I just wanted to shout out to uh rich O Clark,
good work, Yeah, good work doing It's done. Throughout the years,
I can remember when there was a place called Designated
(01:27:06):
Productions at the corner of Airfield in College and Ricky
was a youngster then and used to come up to
watch the bands, including the Families that Meth and uh uh,
the expressions, et cetera, et cetera. And I think even
Baby Pace used to come up from time to time
from what I understand when he was a youngster. But
(01:27:29):
the thing that Ricky has done has done throughout the
community is really great, and I'm glad to see him
keeping on. He's like the energize of Bunny and uh
and keep on doing the good work. Ricky. Uh, you're
into a lot of different things and uh uh, they're
(01:27:50):
all positive. You know, I can remember what many people
don't know. But as a police offer officer, you were
with the gang unit, which back then was very important.
I think even wrote a dictionary or something about gang
terms or something like that. But anyway, we.
Speaker 5 (01:28:09):
Had the Tree Language Dictionary, right. I wrote that.
Speaker 13 (01:28:15):
For for the officers and for educators and teachers so
they would know what the students and parents so they
know what they were talking about.
Speaker 12 (01:28:23):
That's a great idea, absolutely, absolutely, So keep up your work.
And we need we need more people Ian Appolis is
blessed with a lot of people that are really talented
and are using their talents in a polity good way,
and you're definitely one of them.
Speaker 1 (01:28:41):
Okay, thank you, mister Russell. Appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (01:28:44):
Okay, I appreciate that. Yeah, guy took us way back
to designated productive.
Speaker 6 (01:28:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:28:49):
I just set up and watching and learn and and.
Speaker 13 (01:28:52):
And you know, get ideas and things back in the day,
and and that's how I created. We had a group
called the words Witnessymbol, which is one of the first
coming out of that particular air at Lesteah.
Speaker 1 (01:29:04):
Yeah, let's see, let's see another caller that has a
question or question for Ricky Joyce. Go ahead.
Speaker 17 (01:29:13):
Oh yeah, I was gonna come in on the recorder.
They used to have picnics for the children that you know,
delivered or sold the recorder. I used to sell the
recorder when I was young in the medals.
Speaker 16 (01:29:27):
You know, it was pretty lucrative.
Speaker 17 (01:29:29):
And then we had folks on the route that we
delivered to that. Yeah, it was wonderful. It was great
memories back in the seventies when they used to have
those picnics. But you know, another thing bringing in the
youth is definitely a plus. And we have, like y'all say, a.
Speaker 16 (01:29:50):
Tapestry of talented folks in our entity, and so the
youth are very in tune. And for security, I think
they're trying to do something in the States and all
the states where they have drones and.
Speaker 17 (01:30:10):
We could draw I'm sorry, we can train our youth
to operate this and give them training in this field.
It might be helpful this solution for many jobs that
are going away and algorithm and demographics they try and
barrow down.
Speaker 5 (01:30:32):
H Yeah, that's you.
Speaker 13 (01:30:34):
The Recorded was one of the major participants and sponsors
of the Recorded Technic, the really first big back to
school parade that they did back in the seventies, and
then of course then in the nineties, LC along with
the Wise fixed some family FUNDI back to School. The
(01:30:55):
lasted for another sixteen seventeen, eighteen years. So yeah, it's
always been on the cutting edge. So you're going, George,
You're going way back back back the day of the
picnic in the parade. The picnic I think we held
at the Douglas Park and the parade would be a
downtown parade.
Speaker 1 (01:31:13):
Yeah, i'd heard you know, the a lot of the
times that I've been on the show For the entire
time I've been on the show, I keep hearing about
the Picnics and how great they were, and I'm sorry
I was never able to be a part of it,
but they sounded fantastic. Hello, Hello, can you hear me?
Speaker 5 (01:31:38):
I lost him?
Speaker 3 (01:31:39):
Okay, I think I can hear you, man, Yeah, can
you hear us?
Speaker 1 (01:31:45):
Ricky, we hear you.
Speaker 6 (01:31:47):
Oh okay, now now I hear you.
Speaker 1 (01:31:50):
Okay, now we can hear you.
Speaker 7 (01:31:51):
There we go.
Speaker 1 (01:31:52):
But yeah, I was just saying that the picnics are
something I wish I could have experienced. They sound fantastic. James,
had you heard about the picnics as well? I'm sure
you did.
Speaker 6 (01:32:02):
Yeah, yeah, I did. Yeah, they did a good job
with that. I think they held a lot of them over,
if not all over at Washington Park, which is near
the recorder office, and that was well attended by the
people in that area and from all over the city.
That's one thing the recorded tried to do was to
cater to the community and become a community for publication,
(01:32:23):
and they they have succeeded in that, which is one
of the reasons why they stayed around for more than
a century. In a state where you would think that, uh,
you know, and and there was significant opposition to a
black oriented newspaper in Illinois for example. Uh, there was
(01:32:46):
a there was a newspaper in Caro, Illinois that was
burned to the ground that was a black newspaper way
back in the day. So you know, it's really good
when you can have a paper that brings subjects and
issues to the fore front that the community is interested
in reading about and participating in.
Speaker 13 (01:33:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:33:09):
Yeah, absolutely. There was another newspaper that had been around
for quite a while here in the city, but you know,
but at you know, in the end wasn't able to
that was the Indiana Herald. So we were really rolling
as a city when we had both the Herald and
the Recorder. Ricky was the Herald. Was the Herald or
weekly as well.
Speaker 13 (01:33:31):
I believe, so no, yeah, they were a weekly also,
So both the Recorder and the Herald. The Quarter of
course would come out on Thursday, and I think that
the Herald would.
Speaker 5 (01:33:43):
Come out on that Friday, so I'm not sure.
Speaker 13 (01:33:49):
And I know, and they used to be located at
least one of their locations for the Herald was in
the twenty one hundred block of Northvillois.
Speaker 1 (01:33:56):
North Illinois, right across from the Stuart Mortuary, right. I
remember that, Yes, it used to be exactly, but I mean,
you know, it's just it's just nice that we still
have it. It's nice that it's been one hundred and
thirty years, and it's nice that so many people like
the Ricky's and the James's, and and a whole whole
whole lot of folks, the current staff there, all of
(01:34:16):
the you know, previous staff and owners. It's just it's
just great that something has happened with each with each
ownership group, with each passing year, each passing decade, that
has kept the recorder alive, in the history of the
recorder alive, and I think as a community we're very
very fortunate to have had it. And it's it's just
it's just a good thing. One hundred and thirty years.
Speaker 3 (01:34:38):
Damn.
Speaker 13 (01:34:39):
Indeed, that'll be my next project book wise, the history
of what's going on in media black media here and
in our in our city, in our area really because nobody, Yeah,
that's I guess I've let the camp out of the bag.
I'll be working on that in twenty twenty six and
hopefully have that ready and complete.
Speaker 5 (01:35:00):
Four the end of twenty twenty six.
Speaker 13 (01:35:03):
We don't have a really history for the kids to
go to to to look up about the Recorder and
the Herald and WTOC, you know, the history of TLC.
Speaker 5 (01:35:13):
So we need that needs to be.
Speaker 13 (01:35:16):
And and a written form whether it's digital or audio
or or whatever that needs to be able to tell yes,
we have another caller.
Speaker 5 (01:35:25):
We do.
Speaker 3 (01:35:26):
We have Laura on the phone.
Speaker 2 (01:35:28):
Hello, Hello you guys.
Speaker 12 (01:35:31):
I just first I want to tell you.
Speaker 7 (01:35:32):
It's sounds like Donald Duck and Crush on those sides.
Speaker 6 (01:35:35):
But yeah, we knew that.
Speaker 7 (01:35:40):
Yeah, yeah, it's kind of hard for me to sing
what she was talking. But anyway, Ricky Clark, you were
good radio listening music when I was growing up, you
know Ricky Clark times, and my maiden name was Clark,
so I used to climb that we were cousins.
Speaker 6 (01:35:54):
I just couldn't have picked you out in the crowd.
Speaker 5 (01:35:55):
But.
Speaker 7 (01:35:58):
That kept kids for sticking with me. They used to
call me Clark bar at school. So that's when I.
Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
Said that they still do they still make those?
Speaker 7 (01:36:10):
I don't think so, I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (01:36:12):
But so I.
Speaker 1 (01:36:14):
Remember, did you see Clark bar swift. Okay, yeah, well
I knew sooner later I was going.
Speaker 13 (01:36:26):
Don't feel rained on because they called me back in
school too and Clark bar that.
Speaker 7 (01:36:33):
Okay, okay, Well if I had saw you, I couldn't
have picked you out in the crowd, but I claimed you.
Speaker 1 (01:36:43):
Can bar.
Speaker 7 (01:36:44):
Yeah, I was a candy bar Tina for two weeks
since you talked about the trash can, I've been trying
to call you about the trash can, the new trash can.
And you know you said they don't move, they don't
turn very well, they don't turn it at all. They're
only on two wheels. And I have been a condo edition,
so we have to put our cans in our garage
in a special place. And so I was being lazy
(01:37:06):
one day when I got them, and I'm not putting
down my purse and other stuff I had in my hand,
and I'm gonna make it fit in this space. Of course,
it doesn't have the turnability on it, and it said no,
I'm not, and so it flipped me over on my
shoulder in the garage. So I've had a shoulder injury
from this can. So uh, just let the can go
(01:37:28):
however it wants.
Speaker 5 (01:37:29):
To go.
Speaker 7 (01:37:31):
Try to make it turn, and it's it's just not level.
Speaker 1 (01:37:35):
I mean, it's it's not. No, I don't understand the
construction of that, James, you you talked about it too,
that the height is not you know, conducive to the
to the width of it. I guess it's too tall.
I think it's too tall.
Speaker 6 (01:37:49):
And yeah, very deeply made.
Speaker 1 (01:37:52):
Very cheap, very cheap, very cheap.
Speaker 7 (01:37:54):
I've already had to have them bring me a new
one because the contrash.
Speaker 6 (01:37:59):
Can when they pick it up.
Speaker 7 (01:38:00):
I guess it's pushed in the sides too much and
cracked it and maybe put back down there. So I've
already had any one brought in.
Speaker 1 (01:38:10):
But uh, yeah, so it's not it's not sorry that
you had an injury. I mean, my goodness, that's I
don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (01:38:21):
I don't know either, but I think about it every time,
and I make sure every Tuesday I go into trauma
in my head thinking about it. But I make sure
I put down myself and give it undivided attention.
Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
Yea indeed, So thank you for that, and stay safe,
Please stay safe with your treasure on Tuesdays.
Speaker 7 (01:38:40):
Thank you, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:38:41):
Thank you, James, if you had to wrestle with yours.
Speaker 6 (01:38:46):
Yeah, because because of the height of it. Because of
the height of it, you have to really be careful
because it tips over. Replaced forget to take out.
Speaker 3 (01:38:59):
Today was my trash day and I forgot, so I haven't.
Speaker 4 (01:39:02):
Dealt with it as much. Plus my old when they
forgot to pick my old one up. So sometimes I
just throw stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:39:06):
And the old and they hoped they dump it, and
they've done.
Speaker 4 (01:39:09):
Well pretty much. But y'all can come get that big
green trash can if you want to.
Speaker 1 (01:39:14):
They'll they'll dump it until the first of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:39:16):
So oh good.
Speaker 4 (01:39:17):
Well hopefully they picked they picked it up, because I
leave that just sitting.
Speaker 3 (01:39:20):
On the curve. I dragging it back into my ground.
Speaker 1 (01:39:22):
Just leave it at the curve, they'll take it. So anyway,
