What is 'Acceptance'?
Acceptance is an alternative to our instinct to avoid or ignore negative thoughts or feelings. It encapsulates the idea of a complete embrace of one's experience, including thoughts, feelings, and emotions - no matter how negative, confronting or uncomfortable.  It is non-judgmental awareness that actively embraces the experience of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations as they occur.

Discussed in this episode:

  • Lessons in Chemistry, By Bonnie Garmus
  • How to practice Internal Acceptance of self and recognize signs of Resistance to our negative thoughts, feelings, or sensations. Signs of Resistance include: Avoidance, Anger, Blame, Defensiveness, Perfectionism, Dismissiveness
  • ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy): A type of mindful psychotherapy emphasizing staying present and accepting thoughts, feelings, sensations without judgment.
  • Man’s Search for Meaning: By Viktor Frankl. Victor Frankl (1905-1997) an Austrian neurologist and psychologist and Holocaust survivor, devoted his life to studying, understanding and promoting “meaningfulness” by identifying a purpose in life to feel positive about and then immersively imagining that outcome”
  • “The One Most Adaptable to Change is the One that Survives. It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.” -Charles Darwin
