Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome back to the Cricket Today Show for an insane
test rap of the Australia Versus West Indies Test series.
I'm your host Lea McCallon, also known as the Stats Guy.
We just got one man on the couch today.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
He's fired.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
He's turned up in the office. That's very nice to see.
Liam Maloley.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
How you going, I'm going good.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Yeah. Once Marcus saw the result today put him into
like a sickness that we don't know.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
He's just blown away by Stark and Boland.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Honestly, we're going to touch on the ossies this morning.
That Ozzie is just cheering everywhere because that is an
insane result, which we will touch on in a second.
Make sure you check out odds dot com dot e
for more cricket content. Marcus, who's not here, chucks up
a lot of articles on there across all sports, but yeah,
cricket as well. Specifically, it's gonna be an awesome show.
As Leo mentioned, we're going to talk up Starky and Bowland,
build them both a statue which we will touch on,
(00:46):
and our early ashes eleven. So Leo, that's all he's
been talking about for the last I reckon six months
and the ashes is creeping up.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
It's creeping up on us, so we might as well
do an Ashes eleven.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yeah, why not?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
I think I've seen a few clips on socials, so
let's give out take why not?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Why not?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Before we start, make sure you get around this on Spotify,
Apple Podcasts, subscribe to the YouTube channel. We're going to
keep building to the summer and still posting content across
Cricket Today AU on the socials as well, so make
sure you check that out. All right, let's get right
into it because we haven't done a rap show in
a while, but we had to on this one.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
This is absolutely awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Third Test Wrap Australia sweep the Series three zero. It
was a day night test the pink ball and they
win by one hundred and seventy six runs. I believe
that's now twelve or thirteen tests that they've won in
the pink balls. We should just play pink ball tests
all the time.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, i'dn't.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Might have a good old day night of that last
session when it's swinging around, hooping and then as soon
as soon as it's done you can go to bed.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
You'd hate to be a better with the pink ball though.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
For you'd hate yeah, unless you're manus just a good
record with the pink ball.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Well yeah, he didn't even play obviously though if you
haven't seen it, the Windys were bowled out by Australia
for twenty seven, the second lowest score in Test history.
Apparently we're talking to people in the office. Constance missed
an easy one fielding. So he's cost Australia the chance
at having the best, sorry, the worst Test score against them.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
So that's annoying.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
We threw on Constants under the back.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
He's he've got a great runout and he's in the
first and he did.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
But that's all he did. That's all he did.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Anyway, let's get into the Stark and Bowler. We've got
to talk about that about Constant. Let's get out of
the Bark and Bowling. This you got, this is the
Stark and Bowling show. They dominated Stark six to nine.
He had five for two at one stage of the game.
He took three in the first over.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
The Windys had no answer to his angle away swinging.
It's almost like he's been doing that for one hundred
Test matches. You think after a hundred Test matches, the
Windys would know this is Stark's main threat.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
They obviously didn't.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
And Bowling three for two including a hat trick, which
first hat trick since sitt All on his birth on
his birthday, and the tenth Ossie to do it in tests. Ever,
I believe that's right.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yes, so he's also the the first civilized you said,
But none of the big bowlers that we have right now,
in that big, that great bowling cart, they'll have a
hat trick in the tests. So Bowler's just gone. I'm
sitting on the bench. I get five for every second match,
and now I'm going to get a hat trick.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
I reckon.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
He's so unlucky that he's just in that sort of
same age bracket as these legends.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
But he's not coming in for Stark though, because some
of his stats in this game.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
But nuts, aren't they.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Oh Stark.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Stark's got stats glow. As Leo mentioned, He's got his
hundred tests. He said in twenty twenty three that was
a little bit controversial. He didn't want any IPL money,
He didn't want to play in IPL. He wants to
play one hundred tests for Australia. Loves playing for Australia,
obviously turning down IPL money he would.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Have got turns down he did play.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
No, he didn't play in twenty twenty three and then
he wanted to play more tests.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
It was like like a year and a half off.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
I reckon of like no IPL, no, sort of other
things other than tests and things for Australia.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
So I respect that he's.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Played one hundred tests now and he's absolutely awesome. He's
gotten past the four hundred test wicket mark, which not
many as have done.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
I think he's the fourth, isn't he fourth? Yeah, there's
McGrath worn line and him.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Put some respect on Starkey's name.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
That's all we get overheated he does, he does.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
He's got that dog in him now as well, which
I'll touch on. He's got the fastest ever five for
here in this Test match in Test history.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
He's there a fifteen balls to get five for. That's
that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
I reckon I could survive fifteen balls with mid Star
though you couldn't.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
You're either going to have a broken Okay, sorry sorry,
I reckon I could go out less than five times
facing fifteen balls.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
I genuinely reckon, reckon you won't.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
This is surviving one every three.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
He could bowl five Yorks in those fifteen balls.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Set up his bat in front of pad and I'm
not even setting u. I'm just having the bat in
front the pad. If it's short, I'm getting out of
the way than one of these ones, I dodging it.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
And if it's full, just try't get the bat there.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
What's the fastest ball you want to face?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
One forty? I reckon, I faced one close to one forty?
What no?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
There was one game for four to eleven. I was
playing yarravil. This guy was like an x ones and
he was bowling like one thirty five rockets. He bowling
York kind of blocked it out.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
One thirty five only one thirty, I reckon, more like thirty.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
No, No, he was quick.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
He was quick. I don't know about that one.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
And then I think he's Stark As I said, he
had that dog in him. He was fired up from
Jaden Seals. So what's it's West Indies players and give
him an Indian India players and a few other teams
given people send offs. So Seals gave Stark a send off.
The last person you should give a send off is
the bowlers that are going to be coming in and
in the next sittings.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
No, I love it. Nah, no, it's great. I want
to see more of this stuff. I want to see.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Bring me back to when roberta bump Smith and Smith
got rattled by Yeah he bumped him.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah good, just checking you.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah, I pronounced the p in that word. Bring back
the ball, Tamprick saga. Now I want the drama.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I want the sendoffs. I'm so excited the ashes. By
the way, there's going.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
To be send off send off Scalore.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah. Yeah, Like if Bryon Cass plays, he's given a
sendoff to every batsman he gets out, Archers given the
staredown to everyone.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
I want sendoffs. Yeah. No, don't be a baby.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Don't be a baby. Is that what he's saying that?
Speaker 1 (05:44):
But yeah, I think it fired up Starky and he
was ended up with six fer and he's just he's
just incredible, as you mentioned, a bit underrated. I reckon
all right, that's the third Test, right because we just
wanted to talk up the Aussie bowlers. The batsmen were horrible.
I think it was seven ducks from the West Indies.
The Aussie batsman it was just the bowlers. No Assie
Batsman weren't much better. But we didn't get bold after
twenty seven, So happy days frstruction yet not yet. When
are we gonna get bled after twenty seven? We could
(06:06):
No way, that's never happening.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Big questions.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
We haven't done this one for a while, but there's
a lot of questions surrounding selection. The ashes are in
the summer coming up, which we just touched on before selection.
So the openers they're struggling. You've got Kowaja in the
twilight stages of his career, obviously had a great career,
but he hasn't made a run for a while. You've
got Constance, who I still think he'll be all right,
but he's really really struggled there.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah, conscious just looks to me like so he's first
onto the scene playing an expansive form of his game.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
I don't think that's his actual game.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
But then he's gone, all right, let me try and
get back to my game, and he's almost gone too
far the other way. And the trick for him is
finding that balance, and that's going to be a tough
thing to find for him, for such a young dude,
where it's to the point. Maybe it's not like a
did work worse than his confident confidence. It's let's go
back to some state level cricket, build your form back up.
(06:57):
We still back you win long term respect here. But yeah,
he wasn't He wasn't great throughout the series.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, So do you think it's time to replace some openers?
Is Constant is going to keep his spots? Kah, You're
going to keep his spot. That's the big question here.
Who who in that top order needs to be replaced?
Speaker 4 (07:11):
I think he's still in a weird way.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You have to keep one of them because you don't
want to You don't want to change two openers. It
just isn't great for stability, I don't think, especially coming
up to one of the biggest series, with the biggest
series I think for an Australian side the tests. Yeah,
I just think you need to at least keep one.
And Clark has been there for a while, he's been
(07:35):
the main stay. So do you do you stay with him?
That's the question.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
There's a big question.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
I'm leaning towards keeping him in as well because I
think he'll be more suited to Australian conditions, which I'll
touch on later with the Ashes eleven than the West,
and he's like, it was tough batting over there, so
I'll give him.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Give him another guy I reckon. Cam Green is the
next one I want to talk about. He was solid.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
He out of fifty in this series. He had a
few forties. A lot of guys could hardly eve and
make above twenty. So do we think he's locked in
for the rest of the some of the rest of
the next couple of years, because I was very critical
of him, but he.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Did prove me wrong a couple of times and thot, well, fortunate.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Yeah, he did prove us wrong.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
And the thing with cam Green is when he does
get himself in, he really does fight.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
He digs deep.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
He buys time for the guys like Travis Head bow
Webster who are a bit more aggressive. But the challenge
for him will be making those sort of starts that
he does get, which he has gotten at the number
three position, into those big scores. If he can score
a big Ashes century, that is that is just perfection.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
That is what we need.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Section I didn't write this one in there. But another
big question, do we think we're going to see any
more tests coming up? Where Nathan Lyons dropped or is
this because he's only been dropped. I think it was
twenty thirteen and last week obviously.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
I think we'll see him play every test in the Ashes,
and I think in a few games where he gets
that bounce that he's known for, he didn't really trouble
the English bats.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
So I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
No.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
I agree on that one.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
All right, We've done the big questions. I reckon we
do this now the early Ashes eleven?
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Why not? Because well, sorry to cut you off, but
I don't think we play another test till the Ashes
sort of. Now, we take everything that we've gathered, all
the info we have, we try and build out our
Ashes eleven and squad.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
We're gonna pick fourth.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
So I'm really nervous with this one because it's tough.
It's tough against the English. I'll start with you, what
is your early Ashes eleven and squad?
Speaker 3 (09:19):
But the winning Ashes eleven for mine, I'm sticking with
Kowaja at the top. Mick Sweeney for Constance, I think
should come in. I love his temperament at the top
of the order. Cam Green, I think it's done enough
to have the number three spot yep. Then we go
smith Head, Webster, Carry come and stark Line and Hazelwood
(09:39):
as my eleven.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
And then the squad. I've gone with Constance, Manus weather Ald,
who is the top run scorer last.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Season in Shield averages fifty opening the batting, and Scottie Boland.
Of course that is my ashes squad.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Good.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Don't mind the weather Old chat because he said he's
been really good for English is stiff?
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Oh yeah, but I just don't he's more suited to
the spinning conditions.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
No fair enough.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
And you got McSweeney back in there, so you're replacing
Constance for McSween.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Yeah, I just as I said, I think his temperament.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
McSweeney is good and it's a bit like cam Green
And I thought what he showed in the day night
or against India. We we only made thirty eight, but
he showed enough for mine that is probably what we
need at the top.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
I don't care if the run rate is under two
for the first day for Australer we need it.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
It's about yeah, it's about preserving the wicket, making sure
that when Head and Webster and Carry come in these
free flowing scoring guys who could probably go to run
a ball that they're not under pressure.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
They're not coming in for.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Four for for forty and you're like, oh crap, they've
got to save us again. They've got to be coming
in for four for two hundred. And I don't care
if that's four for two hundred after eighty overs.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
No, don't mind that at all. Don't mind that. I'm
going to get into mine.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
This is going to be it's a little bit more
controversial than you'll want to reckon McSweeney and Constance, the
young guns opening up, let's just I want to see
that happen. Then you've got Cam Green who might be
coming in pretty quickly, Steve Smith, Travis head Bo Webster,
Alex Area Pack come and Stark Lion, and then I
don't know, I just.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Really want Scotty Boland in at number eleven, no half.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
That is really really stiff, and Marcus will be shouting,
He'll be in the comments. Who's usually on the show.
He loves Hazelwood. But I think having a look at
the recent form, Scotty Bowen came in, got a hat trick.
He just did did exactly what we needed in Australia.
Especially at the MCG and a few other places he
just dominates. I really want Scotty Bowlan in this thing
and in this side, in this thing, in this in
this side, I'm to say, and if I'm going to
(11:28):
take anyone out Tazewood, I think out of all the
wicket takers in this series, he's had the least. He's
had his best in these last four Test matches has
been too far in an innings and Scotty Bowlin you
can just look in for.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Three or four five. I reckon this is very harsh.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
As a personal fan, I just really want to see
Scotty Bowen and against England.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
He's done it before.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
He does have to play at the MCG, yeah, one.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Hundred percent, and even at the SUG killed it last
summer as well. Yeah, so I think he I'm just
gonna put him in there my squad. You gotta have
Hazewood in there, obviously. I think it's at him, Boland,
I'm going to take out. I was gonna say Marnus,
but I forgot about English. So Marnus, you're not.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
In the squad. Shoving Manus from the square.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Yeah, I don't even want him in the squat, he's
he's washed, So I'll put English in there.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Kawaja as that open open a backup spot.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
He's got the experience, but the young guns can start
in there and then Fergus O'Neill is my rogue shout.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
He's a bias shout because we love him on this show.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
We love him on the show. But he has the
runs on the board.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
He had the most wickets in county cricket over that
three or four match period he played.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
He was unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
He's gotten a lot of these English batsman out before
over in England and he's a very confident man. I
reckon if whenever he comes in for the Australia team,
if this is this year, next year, I reckon he's
going to burst onto the scene and do really well.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
He will play for Australia. Just I don't think it'll
be within the next that's all right.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
I just think little little sneaky shout out for him
and on the openers McSweeney and Constance. I just think
we've got to look to the future a bit, like
we've said this last summer. I don't think is going
to make more runs than Xtweny. I think when he's
got a good temperament, very stiff to be dropped from
his first time he was in the team and Constance,
I think he'll be suited more to the Australian conditions.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
The ball coming on a bit more, it's not going
to cut off the seem as much.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
He can sort of swing through the line a bit more,
play a bit more attacking, and like you said, he
just needs that confidence back. He needs to play in
between that attacking and sort of blocking and playing slow
because when he plays it too.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Slow, that's not your style, that's style. So I don't
mind that anyway.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Let us know in the comments about our ashes eleven
because what's their lash and what's your ashes eleven?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Because we're already so I always wanted the ashes to start.
Now came to be somewhere.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
I'm very nervous for the ashes.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
You're already nervous.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
You can wreck.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
You're a wreck eight days. You look great for that.
You must have ad a few coffees. I'm in a relationship.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Sorry, Okay, no one get around him in the comments.
All right, That stumps for the Cricket Today show. We
will be back for some other test wraps in the future.
In summer, we've got the short format of Australia cricket
which we're going to cover and the socials. We're going
to be all over that on Cricket Today. Are you
to get right around the show. Make sure you subscribe
sending any questions and comments. We love going through the
comments on the show. Thank you very much to Brodie
(13:49):
behind the camera. Thanks learn for this quick little show.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Thank you perfect.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
That's another episode of Creek Today done.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
We're at
