Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome back to the Cricket Today podcast. I'm your host,
Liam mckellay and also known as the Stats Guy. As always,
I'm here with Marcus Barzana's. We were a little bit pumped,
but then England won.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
So how you doing the market stuff? And England win
in the Super Rates a little less pumped obviously Tom
couldn't join us today, Tom from Cricket Today, Tom from
Punch's Yes, unfortunately, but you know, still looking forward, looking
forward to a big show and the Super Eights are.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Of hopefully the big show for Australia. Lifts are in
the Tea twenty World Cup. Yeah, Teach twenty World Cup.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Time.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
We're going to wrap up the first two Super eight games.
So there was some pretty close results in the end
which was pretty exciting. Go through some new news, Yeah
and r question our tips and then previous some of
the biggest games over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
For the Super eight, no Leo as well. A lot
of people in the comments surprisingly asking for Leo. Where
is the third guy? We don't miss him? Yeah, who
looks Leo?
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Leo apparently a for you guys in the comments. So
he'll be back very soon, but for now it's just
you got us too, knuckleheads. Before we start, make sure
you get around this podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, et cetera.
Subscribe and like the YouTube as well, where I'll roach
one thousand around about eight hundred now, so you've acted last.
Since the last podcast, I think we've gone up about
one hundred and fifty or so each podcast, which is
very handed.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Seven ninety six currently.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Love that, Love that, so almost at that one thousands.
I roache one thousand and get around the socials as well.
That's Cricket Today on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and x sorry
Cricket Today AU. He is very handy there, all right.
The news A bit of a weird one came Williamson.
He's had a bit of a cry they I shouldn't
say that. New Zealand obviously about out in the group stage.
He's quit as New Zealand captain.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
The toys are at the court. Does that surprise you,
he's not really no, it doesn't surprise me. Okay, he's
thirty three. Okay, he's getting a bit old. So I
think it's it's probably almost time. Probably you want to
end your captaincy on a good note. Yep. But the
fact that New Zealand were very poor in that World
Cup and he's thirty three. It's a bit of a
sale note to end his captaincy. But yeah, I don't
(01:51):
care past the past, the button on to someone else,
and I think it's I think it's time for New
Zealand cricket.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
A bit of a change, Yeah, because obviously he's one
of the in our generation you've got in that era
of even Test cricket, In cricket in generally you've got
Joe Steve Smith, Kane Williamson Cooley or Barbara's arm as
we say on this show, just some of the great batsman.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
He's just a couple of quick starts for you. Yes,
played three hundred and fifty internationals. Yeah, internationals, I think,
I think general Yeah, yeah, they're all time leading Test
run scorer and second longest serving captain woun all formats.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Yeah, so he's a legend. He can probably do what
he wants if he wants to quit, that's fair enough.
Who's the next captain? I'm looking at some of the players.
You've got Trent, Lucky Ferguson both over thirty three. Yeah,
so that's that's a tough one to Bracewells thirty three.
I was thinking possibly Phillips, he's only twenty seven, because
he's always around the blue roundabouts. Fin Allen's twenty five.
Who else is around god a lot of older guys.
(02:43):
I'm literally every second guy he's over thirty for his
own the only young boke think, Yeah, he's too young.
And I don't think Will Phillips is a not Will Phllips.
He plays for North Malbourn, Glen Phillips. Glen Phillips is
a mainstay to sort of know. It's not like he's
got a different different captains across the world. You've got
like Rowitt Shama or if you're a Kohli with Pack Cummins
(03:04):
Pat Cummins, yes, obviously Ben Stokes for Test England, and
then Glenn Phillips doesn't really excite you Finalen possibly because
he's younger twenty five, that's what that's. That is a
bit of a worry for news on the next captain.
Who's who's that superstar for the next captain? Doesn't look
that obvious.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Don't have an answer, So let us know in the
comments who you think should be the next New Zealand skipper? Yeah,
a key we supporters out there.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Next one in the news, Harris rafth this one very
sad getting abused. He's just walking out of the hotel
with his mom, I believe. Don't quote me on that,
but that's what I read an article. Someone was having
a goal with him from these T twenty World Cup
efforts Pakistan. You can say what you want most of
the time. If you go I'm disappointed with Pakistan, disappointed
with the team. Even if you see Harris Rauff go oh,
sorry you didn't make it through, or or yeah, I'm
(03:49):
annoyed that didn't happen. But don't abuse someone and their family.
That is a horrible thing to do. The absolutely dog
that Pakistan fan. That is a horrible thing to do. Yeah,
and Harris Ralf was ready to throw fists. He took
his shoes, jumped over the hedge, and then this other
guy was holding him back. I think it was like
him against four people like that.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
They were giving him abuse and then he wants to
throw hands and they sort of carried away the people.
They're walking back. But no, then again, it shouldn't never
get to that point. And I think I don't know
that the nerve to even go up to cricketer who
obviously wants to win for your country. And it was
very passionate in the India Pakistan game that we were
a lot of streaming, like you can see like it
(04:28):
hurt the Pakistan player. He's not trying to purposely lose.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
And yeah, we love Pakistan fans because they're so passionate
and India fans they're just so passionate.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
But you can definitely cross the line. Most of them
are fine, find just this one.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
A few couple of guys that just went up to
Harris rap just don't do that and we don't like
to see that for Harris.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Absolutely love Harris Rapp. New other news. Travis Head.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
We love that he loves an absolute session after a
big win. He's saying he regrets his past World Cup antics.
There was all those photos of him passed half pasted
out with his sonn he's on the metal.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I don't think it's a p out of Australian etics.
It's just the culture of Australia is just to have
a session when you win something. And I don't know
if it's a shame because of Australia that have won
so much and they just want to have so many sessions.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
At least he hasn't done anything wrong. MAXI has been
in the hospital a few times for celebrating.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
If anything, I remember Mitch marsh got in trouble in
the ode I walk up for resting his feet on
the trophy and like having a cigar or whatever or
having a Beer's just a funny, Travis. It's probably just
saying that what not not yet to a level. Isn't
that anything wrong? Just had a few beers. Yeah, It's
not like he's like gone out the way and sort
of ridiculed another team like like how I know sometimes
(05:37):
in soccer, and it's happened in soccer before other sports
as well, where like teams sort of ridicule the other team,
the other team for winning, or like joke around about
the other club and sort of disrespect the nation that
they're playing against. They haven't done that, so I don't
see a problem with it.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
No fair co All right, moving on, Yeah, in our
question you've chucked this one in there, England obviously one
this morning. We're going to cover that in our wraps.
But watch yeah, now.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
I'm going to give this to you and also the
audience camera. What have we underestimated England. They just beat
the Western News, which we'll talk about. That's a very
good year. Ken they go all the way.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
I'm going to say yeah, because I tipped West Indies
in this one. West Indies, I wouldn't say they're in
the box seat. It was very even then. The depth
of England just took over. You got Johnny burst on
Phil Salt, who people before maybe last year would go
I wouldn't rate them as the best twenty twenty plays
in the world, feel Salt. It's just been awesome since.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
The i PL.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
So I'm going to say, yeah, we've been talking about
England a lot. They weren't amazing in the in the groups.
They just knuck too.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
They're probably very lucky to like in a lot of
tournament in sport, you just need to build like you do,
need a bit of tournament.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
And they've just been the West Indies who are undefeated.
So I'm going to say, yeah, we've because they are
in the box seat now for the final.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Four, Yeah they are. Yeah, So anything can happen once
you go to the final four. So you have to
say them we've underrest Probably we definitely have underestigated them
because I think that's because of Rassis and we've been
a bit biased, but maybe, but you never know. You
never know. But the United States basically have to beat England.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Now.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
I think we're considering the net run rate of England
because they won by eight wickets against the Windys and
they've got a net run rate of plus one point
three from that game. So I think we have underestimated England.
Just won't care.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
That's all right, We've both gone. Yeah, there being Ozzie
fans that kills us to say. Make sure you subscribe
to our YouTube channel. We're going to do some game
raps here so you can hear about your country and
your team. Subscribed by Cricket Today AU and Cricketeay podcast
Game Raps Super eight. The first two games, the overnight
one was USA taking on South Africa. Marcus USA put
up a really strong fight here. The pro t is, yeah,
(07:40):
they did well.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
First of all, South Africa made one hundred and ninety
four before Quinton de Cock was outstanding seventy four off
forty balls. It's probably the first time he's really made
runs in this tournament. I don't think he.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Hasn't been great the last six months in a lot
of different tournaments. It was horrible in the Big Bash. Yeah,
he didn't get picked up in the IPL or things
like that. But seventy four or forty one hundred and eighty.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Five striker, you loved it. You love to say that
aid Markman on your class and also chipped in with
the bat as well. But you know, America, they made
one hundred and seventy six, so they made a game
out of it, only lost by eighteen runs.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
But I should be doing our champ for classes, I know, teacher,
under class and silver stuff.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
I forgot about enough. It's the IPL story back there. Yeah,
but top run scores from America. You want to go
through that.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Oh, Americans have actually been so exciting some of the
that has just been emerging in this tournament.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You've got what is it Andreas Goose. I don't want
to say that wrong, but I'm not sure to pronounce. Yeah,
I think it's Goose eighty or forty seven.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
The wicket keep up five fours, five six, one hundred
and seventy strike rate, absolutely awesome. I think a lot
of people would have penciled in one fifty or less
for maybe even less, one forty or less for US.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Is a South African as well against South Africa. Yeah,
made eighty four. He was born in South Africa.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
There was He's like, you can't. You didn't pick me,
So I'll play for USA and just dominateing myself. So
they've done really well there.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
I think it was.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
It was a pretty good batting pitch because obviously two
big scores. But they're keeping their headsailed high. They're going
to go into the superad people to go. If they
do make it to the Superread, they'll get smashed. No,
they've already exceeded expectations. Yeah, and you know what, they
got a chance please bet England if they eat. Oh,
we might have to do like an hour long podcast
just on that game because that'd be very funny. H Yeah,
(09:19):
they've done really well. South Africa got the job done.
Who got the who got the wickets in the end
for South Africa. That's having a quick look Roberta. He's
back because obviously Norki has been their best bat of
this tournament. But Roberta two three, eight four point five
economy rate. Norkia not at his best, actually only one
for thirty seven. Chamsy I saw some videos of him.
He loves a chat Chamsy. He loves the sledging and
(09:41):
things like.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Sledge and a half one for fifty. What is he doing, Chamsy? Yeah,
not great. You can't be sledging when when you got
figures at one for fifty or four overs. But look,
this is probably put I wouldn't say South Africa in
the box seat, but it's handy. If you get to
South Africa, Western New game is gonna be huge.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
But the other thing is I don't rate To Africa
to go too far like winning because I've had a
lot of close games. They could have lost in a
pall and they could have lost to USA. That's a
bit of a way.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Yeah, I think I still think probably England and West
Indies go through that.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Yep, group, I agree talking about England West Indies. They
just played this morning. We did a bit of a
live stream for that, so thanks for people tuning into that.
England got the job done in the end pretty convincingly.
When West Indies had it really even, it was really
quickly as it was almost two a ball tens to go. Yeah,
so the West Indies but up one hundred and eighty
for four. Much better batting pitch than a few other
(10:34):
teams have seen in England. So off their twenty overs,
then England got one hundred and eighty one done eight
wickets spare one hundred and eighty one for two off
seventeen point three overs. It was almost to a ball
and then they've done it with two point three overs
to spare. England just got it done pretty easily. Who
also surprised mollin early only ball to I was got
one for fifteen, so I thought he probably deserves another
couple of overs.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
How many day bowl what ever? It won too because
seven bowlers there. I saw that mark we've got smashed
around and over. Joff actually went for a little bit
as well. But the West Indies was just shared the runs, yep.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
But Robin Power did really well thirty six off seventy
two hundred and eleven striker you love to see.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
That unreal but yeah, it was all about Phil Salt
and Johnny Bestow.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
For him four that was a huge partnership, was there
partnership in the end trying to have a quick look.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
They were one for sixty seven No four.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
And then they didn't lose a wicket after that, so
they've just less than one hundred round partnership awesome by
Phil Salt and Johnny Bestow. Bestow, he definitely don't rate
him in Australia, but he's been really good twenty.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
He played really well, I hate to say, but he
played some good shots. He was lucky with a couple
of shots. He just missed a couple of chop ones
that went for four. And then obviously he had the
one that we thought he scied, but the wind probably
carried it for six. But he still batted really well.
And then it was the aggressor in the in the
Phil Salt partnership before Phil Salt went off with the
(11:55):
last twenty.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Runs, when you got a hundred run partner or just
under one hundred run partnership and they're both going one
hundred and eighty five, right, great, jeez, that's what that's
the difference between England and Pakistan. I don't like to
now Pakistan. We love Pakistan on this show, but a
lot of their guys are going one hundred, one hundred
and ten strike right, yeah, you can get that above
one hundred and fifty plus. You're going even one hundred
and thirty plus like Moe and Ali did. You can
win a game off your own bats. So yeah, they
Phil Sol was awesome eighty seven or forty seven.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yeah, that's the thing the West Indies didn't do. They
didn't have someone who lost their first on and like
made some runs. Yeah, like Phil salted. But credit to England.
They look like they're going to go to the semi's unfortunately.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Yeah, possibly, but never no fingerscross the USA can do something.
West Indies lost their first game now, which is crazy.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
If England progress, could we see Australia England's semi final?
Speaker 1 (12:38):
That would be huge? Yeah, yeah we could actually, I
was thinking I forgot about that. We originally we didn't
think that would progress. But beaten the West Indies, that's
the best, their biggest. If they both win, could meet
each other in the final, that'd be great. They'll be
actually England. Yeah, who would we rather? I think we'd
rather play England over India in the final because India
a bit, but India like to come win the finals.
(12:59):
I'd rather playing Yeah, okay, yeah, definitely, India have more depth.
I'd rather play anyone but India in the Okay, even
though India have a terrible record in the finals.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
They just have more depth and stars. Yeah, who would
you rather play England, West England or the West Indies.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Assuming I know the Westerns have been almost in better form,
but I probably rather play them. They're a lot less
experienced in the finals. England just a lot older, more experienced,
a lot of level headed guys, as Best on headshow,
sorry Best in Salt showed.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
So probably. Yeah. I'm still worried about that that batting order.
I don't know why Mo and Al's batting at three
and Harry Brooks.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Down when they really needed to go hard. When Mo
and Ali is not going to hit hit sixers everything,
He's not going to make you eighty or fifty like
Phil Salt.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
No, there you go. So yeah, England beating the Western
is in that one.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Tipping results so far, I've done the Stephen Bradbury, I'm
just coming in late.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
I'm coming in later here thirty one to thirty. I'm
leading the way. You forgot to do your tips more
tips for today's game. I know I should have done
it yesterday, but luckily you tipped West Indies beat England.
Do you have tipped West? I would have tip the
same as you. So all right, Well, that's just games.
The game. Game is the game down by one.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Well, it's going to be tight towards the end a
little and Tom's already just forgotten and Oliver everyone else
to be forgotten.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
So it's just markets. I actually think I've actually think
Tom started tipping again. I did.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
He's trying to catch us. Okay, catch us. So we're
on thirty thirty one.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, it's probably not even worth to look. Let's have
a look at the lead award Tom fourteen. Oh, come on,
tell me he went and got that's that's verir fair enough.
Let's get into this Super eight weekend tips.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Marcus will start off with huge clash tonight in Australia
India VERSU Afghanistan. Who are we taking and who's gonna
be the standout plays? And this one, Look, this is
going to be a close game. Will predicting this to
be very close. India haven't been great.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Afghanistan have been very good by their game against the
West Indies in the Undefeated, but they haven't been convincing
in a few of their games. Yes, yes, and I
just think that there they're lacking something there. I think
there's there's a little bit of identity missing. Obviously, Khali
has a new stripes. But I'm saying that they have
won every game. Charm has been really good, Khalie playing well.
So look, it's going to be tough.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Maybe India, just Indiajus you're going, okay, Maybe I'm going
to go Afghanistan. I think Gervas and Zadran in the
top order, if they make some runs, they can beat anyone.
Their top three is really good in this tournament. I'm
going towards Afghanistan.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Why not. I think just for brom is going to
be crucial. Juster Brombra.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Yes, so they have been relying on Boomra a little
bit with the ball. You got a few other guys
that need a lift. If some other guys around Bomber
can left, if he only has to get to say
two or three wickets rather than four plus, then they're
not just relying on Boomra. I'm gonna lean towards Afghanistan
now that might It is going to be India's first
game in Barbados.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yeah, and obviously Afghanistan played their first group stage games,
so could play effector there you go.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
So we've got a rich split on that one India
and Afghanistan next one. The first two Right game for
the Aussies Australia vers Bangladesh ten thirty am Stra time.
This is going to be really close as well. I
think Bangladesh have put up some really strong fights. I
didn't even pick them to make it out of the
Super Right. They had a horrible build up. They've bounced
back really really well. Their openers have done really well.
Their bowling has been really good, so this could be
(16:13):
pretty close. I think Australia has too much bowling depth though, yes,
and that's going to be the difference in this one.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Look, I think the warrior is Bangladesh with the bat.
They just don't make enough runs. No, they don't group
stage so far one hundred and twenty five against Sri Lanka,
but they obviously were chasing that and made that with
an over to spare. Against South Africa They're only made
one hundred and nine and lost that game bat at
the full twenty. Against Netherlands they made one fifty nine
(16:41):
and they're going to be facing a tougher bowlingttack in Australia. Yeah,
and also Nepal they got balled out for one hundred
and six. Yeah. I think if you're playing against Australia.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Other than a few little hiccups, Australia had a long
the way you've got to make one seventy plus, I'd say,
especially in the West Indies, because these pitchers have been
a lot nicer to bat on than the US pitches.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
So I think I'm going I'm gonna go to the Aussies.
I don't think it's gonna be close at all. You
don't think it's going to I think smash Bangladesh. Oh okay,
get a cheeky net run rate, cheeky net run rates.
I don't like that. I'm going to get the others.
I think this would be pretty close. Bangladesh. I think
last time we played had a really good opening partnership.
So just I don't know.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
I don't mind Bangladesh to put up a fight. Yeah,
the Aussie should be in this one, similar to the
Scotland game. Just might be a little bit worrying the
big store and will come out and hit some bombs.
He's been he's been awesome. All right, let's do some
quick fire ones for the other games that are coming
up over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
England South Africa. Who you going? I will go with
England England. Yeah, I think I'm going to get South Africa.
I don't know they're undefeated, but they're frauds. I think
somehow they they just scraped over the wine against a
lot of teams. Next one, USA versus West Indies. USA
have been a surprise packet, but I have but tough askings.
The Windys in Barbados Windys for me. Yeah, Windy's with
(17:48):
the home crowd. Uh. Next one, I'll touch on India Bangladesh.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
There's been some pretty close matches, but India have really
strong record in.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
You with that, and they bowl Bangladeship for under one
hundred one hundred. Oh yeah, honestly, honestly they will. I'm
not very impressed with the Bangladesh batting, fun bowling. They
can cause some issues, all right, is a bit of
an issue. Get India pretty comfortable and that one as well.
All right, We're going to cover another Aussie game here,
Afghanistan Australia. We can go a bit more in depth
in the Aussies. Why not Afghanistan Australia. Yeah, who do
(18:17):
we think is going to rise in this one? Oh?
This is a tough one. This is like a toss
of the coin for me, I think we can get
some early wickets. Afghanistan are in some trouble. Yeah, because
I think you've mentioned that once you look past the
top three, four slim pickings for Afghanian.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Yeah, the games that they've won, Afghanistan's because their top
three is done really well. And obviously for Rukie's been
amazing with the ball. I'm actually can't and a few
other bowlers, but yeah, I think Stark is that man
guy that can get an earlier wicket and just go
straight through Afghanistan.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Yeah, I don't think for Rookie will be a big
issue for Australia. He has taken the most wickets in
the tournament twelve, ahead of Norkia with ten, but has
played a game less. They've had a pretty easy group though.
Australia like pace on so far this tournament. You've seen
it when they play England with Mark Wooden, jew Archer
Warner love so, I think and Warner does as well,
so especially on these grounds which can be a little
(19:07):
bit short square boundaries. So look, I think spin is
the big issue with Zamster Green. With Amster grund Brush
you can't as standpoint of view, But of course we'll
have to We'll go Australia here just maybe thirty runs. Yeah,
I agree. I think it could come down to the
last couple of overs.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
I'm gonna say like ten twenty runs, maybe a bit
a little bit less will get it done, but it'll
be really close. I think that's gonna be one of
the games of the Super Eight. Yeah, in the tournament.
So that's gonna be awesome. Let's go to Monday night
or Sunday night, sorry in Australia. Next one is USA England.
Just go quick fire.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Again USA, USA. Nothink we'd have that just because I
don't want England to go through, so we'll go to
the US.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
You are not been pretty good, but I gotta go England.
They bounce back. I'm not going to go England, sorry mate.
Next one West in South Africa. Is that sorry, that's
the last one. We'll do a quick fire tip on
that one. West indis Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
I think as we mentioned South Africa on Fraud Watch,
they are and the West Indies, although they just lost
