Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome back to the Cricket Today Show for a huge
Second Test preview between Australia and the West Indies. I'm
your host, Liam mckelly and also knows the stats guy.
We've got that two knuckleheads on the couch. They think
they're cricket experts. We've got Marcus Barzano, Liam Malalley.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
How we going, that's mate. I am a cricket expert.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I've got an average of ten in my whole career,
so I think that makes me an expert higher.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Than his striker right, which is pretty impressive to me.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I actually think the strike rate could be the same.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
It is crazy. They're fired up. Marcus. I'm officially retired
from playing cricket, so technically.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
We're not playing again.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Probably not. I retire, but I'll come back.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
So we all join the team, maybe the Cricket Today eleven.
Let us know in the comments what team you want
us to play for? In Melbourne email. Actually that's not
a bad shot up there.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
We go.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
For more cricket content and across all sports, checkout odds
dot com. Dore you, I believe you chucked a cricket
article up there for the Second Test.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Marcus yes, sure did.
Speaker 5 (00:57):
Also just checking about what sort of each team is
and how to go about it. So there's plenty of
stuff going up on there, not only just cricket but
everything else.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
There's been a bit of Wimard an AFL and a
bit of everything actually on Twit de France, which is
very exciting coming up. Awesome show as we go through
the second Test match of the Frank Warrel Trophy. We've
got our predicted lineups, the key players to watch out
for and our match predictions before we start. Make sure
you get right around the show Spotify, Apple Podcasts, subscribe
to our YouTube channel. Make sure you get around the comments.
Leo loves a comment. We've been getting a few from
(01:26):
our Andrew t shout out to him. He's been awesome,
awesome supporter of this show. And get around the socials
as well. That's cricket today AU across all the platforms.
All right, let's get into It's the second Test of
Australia West the West Indies. This is our predicted lineup,
so we don't know the actual lineups just yet because
the match is a couple of days away, but this
is our predicted lineups and we'll start with Marcus to
cover a little bit of Australia while we have a
(01:47):
chat about it.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Think we're only predicting one change from the previous starting eleven,
and that is Steve Smith, obviously returning from his finger injury. Yes,
put the line up goes like this. We've got quad
during common opening the batting still with cam Green holding
spot at three, Smith in at four, Head Webster, Carey, Cummings,
Dark Lion and hazel Wood to finish off. So that
(02:10):
means no Josh Inglish. Would you drop Josh English out
of those a bunch of eleven or would you opt
for maybe cam Green or just keeping Smith out?
Speaker 1 (02:23):
No?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I think I think Smith in for English is the
right call. I know cam Green, I know we think
he's overrated. He is, but if we're going to back
him in at three, he's more of a number three
than the others around him now.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
But he's not a number so this is some status.
He only averages thirty three in tests. That is not
number three eleven Stokes he's playing, Yeah, but exactly Ben
Stokes isn't going to be.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Bad in at three.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
He's only had four innings, but so far he's averaging
five and a half a number three at the first drop.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
I'm just not sold. I want to know Smith is
a lot better at number three.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I believe he's just got easily runs at four man,
but he could make runs anywhere.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
He's a canny opening.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
That's that's a different beast, he said than the New
Ball anyway. Yeah, it actually depends on how Constance goes.
Constance is the other one that's a bit controversial, but
I like it. Andrew McDonald said they're going to back him,
and he's only young guy, so they're going.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
To back him too.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Cam Green's relatively he's played thirty tests, but he's young.
He's like twenty six, isn't he.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
Yeah, I think we're more will we more reliant on
that opening? There's more question marks over the opening spot.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I believe you reckon.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
Yeah, so I think if it's so Constance, if we're
going to play him in the ashes, you have to
play him now.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Well, Yeah, Constance needs to fire up to get that
spot in the ashes. But he's lucky because we don't
really have like someone setting stone for an opening spot.
We've talked about that all summer, where we had McSweeney
was a bit up and down.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Then we had a lot of the.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Older guys like Renshaw, Harris, they're not going to get
back in the team.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
So he's in a lucky spot. Constance probably right.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
Now, the only one that's confirmed is Kowaja for that
Ashes series and then beyond that he's probably retired after that,
so there's going to be two spots.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah, it'd be interesting. Another one on Smith while he
was recovering in New York. He spent some of his
time in New York when he's not playing, which is
a bit interesting. He was doing some batting practice in
a baseball batting cage, which was a bit it sounds
like him. He's a strange man. He happens to open
the ground up. Yeah, yep, so you can you can
hit it down the midwiki down the cover.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Yeah, it's a third base. Yeah. I was like, where's
he going?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
I don't really understand what he was talking.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Now I know what he was talking about. You're talking
a few home runs? Yeah? Why not? Why not?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Super?
Speaker 4 (04:26):
We're talking about the mr where's the MRC podcast going? Cricket?
I'm going off topic here, but you.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
See the finish to the game the other the other day,
which one dropped the cats.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
They dropped they needed one off one.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
It was a diving catch was dropped and then there
was a runout chance but the batting slide got over
the line. The end all that actually that might have
was at one of the baseball.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Field was involving Ricky Ponting's Ricky Oh that's right. Yeah,
there we go.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
I've got a few stats up coming over the next
few Tests for the Aussie bowlers, if you will indulge,
that's right.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Guess your guess. I guess we'll listen. So we're into
the host of the show. That's part of your job.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
I guess Cummens needs six wickets to pass Brettley to
be seventh all time fresh Gia in Test wickets. Then
you've got Nathan Lyon needs seven wickets to pass McGrath
for second all time.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Geez.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
So those two are the biggest ones, I believe. Then
you need Stark needs nine wickets for four hundred wickets
and Hazelwood needs twelve for three hundred. So all of
our bowlers they meechin and milestones over the next couple
of Tests, which one I'm just gonna put this out there,
is going to get their first lads, I think Cummens
or line has to be Cummens come.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Amaic Cummins and then Stark sneaky four hundred.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
It just depends what the pitch is like.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Because we saw the pace bowlers had the rob of
the green on the pitch in the first test. Whether
that will be the same in the second still yet
to know, still a few days away, but Lion, you
can definitely get there. He's sneaky three to four a game.
And not only is he passing possibly Glen mc grath
(06:00):
second spot, he also passed over the song.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Didn't he start?
Speaker 1 (06:04):
I got so nervous watching that video. Said it to
you guys. I was like, oh no, he looks sad.
He's sitting on a chair like an interview sort of
set up. I'm going he's going to retire the goat,
but he didn't, so I'm happy. I didn't happy, But
he's passed the team song. I do you want to
give us a rendition?
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Markets? No? Why not?
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Just done that?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
This man get us sense it all.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
But I don't know word for word off my heart,
but I've done the bus underneath the Southern Cross.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I stand he's actually doing it.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
With al in my hand, Australia in my native land.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
That's why I said ten not let him do it.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
He's got a paper, told you, I told you it's traditional.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Poor Gerald has the bleep it out.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
It's a first.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Day back sleeping something for reference.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
That is unlucky job for the producer. I'm sorry I
did that Atralian tradition. I like his energy and he
could sing the song.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
For austral I reckon Marcus did that very well.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
All right, let's swiftly move away from aust and let's
get into the West Indies, please Leo.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
So the predicted lineup braathwait, Louis in for Campbell God,
I hope I pronounced his name Ryes Cardi King. Why
have you put Warrick in it?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
That's very battered. That's very bad it, watchman.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
That's what good job mate. That's guys who Warrick in
the number five?
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Jase fivet Ope six, Grieve seven, Ozari, Joseph eight, Worri
Can nine, Sam Joseph ten and Steals eleven.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Now that's a much better line of I may or
may not have just copied and pasted that from the
Yeah no, no cricket. But I forgot that he got
which also we've talked about this.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
That shouldn't be a thing.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It's fine.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
No, just if you're a batsman, you should a job
and they.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Will when the night watchman goes out.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Exactly the night watchman gets out too easily. Any other
points you want touch.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, I want to talk about James Seals. He just
knows how to get wickets. I was very surprised by
his record eighty one wickets in nineteen Test matches, which
is the fourth best strike rate of players with a
minimum seventy five wickets. Yes, current players, current players. Yes, Yes,
he knows how to seal up a wicket, that's for sure.
The Asses are intimidated by him and Shama Joseph, who
(08:49):
they took nine in the first Test match. He was
absolutely superb. And yeah, I just think the Aussies as
a batting unit struggle to face that real sort of
fiery pace bowling which they bring. And if it wasn't
for drop catches it could have been a different story.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
I don't know about Shama Joseph in facing ell playing
up against Australia.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
He just he just loves the passion. But I always
he always loves the matchups.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
He was talking a bit of crap in the media
and he backed it up with nine weeks. Obviously they
didn't get the win, but definitely wasn't his fault. I
want to touch on that there.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Batting.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Australia's batting was pretty average, but just slightly better Shamar
Joseph was the West Indies top scorer in the first.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Testament and they have a both get near fifty.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yeah, because so he had eight and forty four and
I added them all up. Chi Hoope had forty eight
and two, so he still had more than him. Someone
else had forty and one, so I added all of them.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Joseph came out in real maxic.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Can you imagine him prepping the run sheet where he's
like going first in his second forty.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Four plus one, forty eight plus.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Two equals five. I definitely did not need.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
The calculator before four plus eight. But how crazy is
that that he was the top score That's.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
That is a bit of a He was swinging though
at the end. Yeah, but got under a cop.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
He got on to a few can did bombs. He
was forty four off twenty in the second. It was good.
He was doing it without the helmet as well. The
majority of that's aura. Yeah, is that a hard man
like you like mircas. It is proper cricket lore. It's
cricket in cricket law.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Game's not gone, game is not gone.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Second Test predictions, let's get into it.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Lad's Australia won by one hundred and fifty nine runs
in the first Test, closer than the score suggests. I
think that the West and he's let this one get
away from him a little bit. They were dominated with
dominated with the ball. If they made a few more runs,
it would have been a lot tighter and they could
have got a lot closer. Would you guys agree, Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
I think it's that lower order batting with head Webster
carry that trio, which I think was a different time
in the run scoring. Yes, they were the difference absolutely.
All right, let's get into the best bowler Leo.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
You got to West Indian this time?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, Jayden Sears really impressed me in that first Test,
as I said, of surprise by his stats.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Ye, so far today and he's only twenty three years old.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
That's that's crazy.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
One forty plus again, so they got two players that canon.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
He might give a femal sendoffs the one he gave
to Cummings my tel head to pack his bags go
back home.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
I don't know. I don't send off someone.
Speaker 5 (11:11):
I wouldn't do it to a bowler because they've got
every right to just come back out.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Your Why I should do it too? Yeah, like the
or something.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
The ic C was so impressed that they handed him
a fine.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yeah, I don't know why you got a fine. I
send off like that. It's not pretty common though, I
feel fine, you.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Shouldn't get a fine for a send off.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
Yeah, we're getting a send off. Fifth getting a fine
if he if he doesn't send off like that.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, I don't think, yeah exactly. That's another another podcast.
That's another podcast. Marcus best Bowler.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
I'm going West Indian again. Joseph.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
He took nine in the last Test match and I
just think there's something about him. I mentioned it before
when he plays against Australia and we just can't see
him to cope with him.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
I think he's a little bit in our heads.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
I'm looking particularly that top order and he had had
multiple drop catches.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
He was very unlucky. I thought, was I know Seale's
got more wickets.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
Yeah, he was in the first match, but I still
think Shamar Joseph was the best bowler, our best West
Indian bowler and probably the best bowler for the match.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
No, good call, good call. I'm going to go Paddy Cummins.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I think he was one of our most economical bowlers
last game, especially in the second innings. But I'm lucky
not to get a few more wickets. He just does
it all for Australia. He's so good and I reckon
he's going to pass what was it, Brett Lee in
seventh all time for Australia this Test match. I think
he needs six, So I reckon he can get up
to seven eight wickets in this Test match and take
it out as the best.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Ball love it?
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Yep?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
All right, best batsman, We'll go back to Marcus this time.
Who's going to be the best battle.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I was really impressed actually in the first innings, particularly
in the second inning Storry of the first Test match.
I was particularly impressed with Travis Head even the way
even the first first innings, just the way he was
going about it.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
I thought he got out pretty cheaply in that first innings.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
Pretty unlucky with with the edge. There was a bit
lazy on one, but in the second innings he just
looked like Travis Head from the Ashes in Australia in particular,
where like the cover drives and it was it looked
beautiful batting. So yeah, I think Travis Head's probably the
most informally Australian batsman.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Yeah, I'll give you that. It's all go TRAVI said,
nice Lea.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
I'm going with Alex Carey simply because I think this
will be a low scoring Test match once again to
carry will get plenty of opportunity and he always likes
to chip in with a forty or a fifty, and
I think that just might be enough to be honest.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
He saw with the Windys Tamar.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Joseph get it with fifty two, so if Kerry gets
a fifty and thirty, it could be more than anough.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Yeah, I'm very similar theory with Bo Webster obviously coming
in a bit later in the order as well, but
he's so calm and collected for a guy that's only
played a few Tests.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
He looks so good.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
A few people are saying, oh, should he stay in
the side because Cam Green's back one hundred percent he
just looks so calm.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
He can hit the boundaries, but then when he needs
to go a bit slower he can as well.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
So I think he's really proved me, not wrong, but
just he's been a lot better than I thought. And
I want to put him as best batsman for this
one because he looks loos, so level headed, and I agree,
I think he could be able to carry and Webster
they just looked a bit more calm. They don't have
to face the new ball as well, which has been
hooping and especially from seals.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
He's a really good swing bowler, so I think that
will help them.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
I think I think a lot of the bowls for
the West Indies actually struggled to even the Indian bowlers
towards the latter end of the border Gaviskad Trophy. They
missed the length with bow Webster because he's so tall,
he can he can sit back and it will come
on a comfortable high or he can go forward and
get the bord a nice you know, sort of pitch
length half volley. So they need to change the length
(14:31):
just a little bit when facing Boat Webster because it
was long levers.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Yes, very true, all right, who wins are we going
to be biased again Australia on the first Test. So
I'm going on Australia for the second Test, but I
think it'll be reasonably close again.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Australia, but we need to see an improvement in the
batting from one hundred and even from a Windy's perspective,
it would make a great game.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
Ye, yeah, it'd be perfect for us.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
I'm going to go Australia as well, but it'll be
perfect for us and the batters to find some form
ahead of a big six months of cricketer ahead, especially
with if.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
We play South Africa in a few white ball matches.
We've got obviously the ashes like that's awesome. That's the
only thing I'm worried about. If we get closer and
we lose this type of Test match, then we have
to go into the ashes.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
That's a big step up against them, all right.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
I'm calling it lads that stumps for their Cricket Today show.
We'll continue to do this show around some of the
other Test matches. I think there's a third Test in
England India England India as well, so there's lots of
cricket for Australia that we're going to cover get right
around the show. Make sure you subscribe sending any questions
in comments. We love all the comments. Lea loves all
the comments. We can get around them as always. Thank
(15:35):
you very much to Brodie behind the camera. Thanks Leak,
thank you, thank you Mark Auser, Thank you Saskata. That's
another episode of Cricket Today.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
Done, We're out.
