Oktober 1929. In New York stort de beurs op Wall Street in. De crisis, met haar kiemen in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, jaagt de wereld in ellende en armoede. Amerikaanse banken eisen het geld terug dat ze aan Europa hebben geleend na de Wapenstilstand. Het doet het Duitsland van die jaren wegzakken in een uitzichtloze crisis met een tsunami van ontslagen en faillissement. Het is tegen die achtergrond dat Adolf Hitler met zijn extreme discours een almaar groter deel van de mensen verleidt. Zelfs tot in Vlaanderen. François Igosse groeit op rond Gent, tijdens die woelige jaren ‘30.
De oorlog begint voor hem pas na de bevrijding want de moeder en zus van François zijn Vlaams-Nationalistisch en voelen het met de repressie warm onder de voeten worden.
