10 mei 1940. Duitsland valt België binnen. Frans Goetghebeur is op dat moment dertien jaar en groeit op in Oostende. Als zoon van Vlaams volksvertegenwoordiger Karel Goetghebeur moet hij, samen met het voltallige gezin, mee met de regering naar Londen die in ballingschap gaat waar zijn vader zal werken.
Via Frankrijk proberen ze Londen te bereiken maar oorlog is onvoorspelbaar: halen ze het tot in Londen of niet?
