In het landelijk Welle, bij Denderleeuw, wonen in mei 1940 de dan 9-jarige Godelieve Van Impe, samen met haar ouders, tante en haar kleine broer.
Het gezin van Impe staat erom bekend iedereen te willen helpen. Als ze bij het uitbreken van de oorlog een gezin onderdak willen bieden, weten ze op dat moment nog niet dat ze ook een SS-soldaat in huis halen. Iets waar Godelieve nog altijd van beeft als ze eraan terug denkt.
