Voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, in de jaren ‘30, woedt in Spanje al een bitse strijd tussen linkse Republikeinen en rechtse nationalisten. Op 17 juli 1936 wint links de verkiezingen, en de rechtse generaal Franco besluit met geweld de macht grijpen. Het is het begin van een bloedige burgeroorlog die honderdduizenden levens zal eisen. Martin Aguirre maakt het als jonge tiener allemaal van dichtbij mee.
Heel Spanje gaat gebukt onder de terreur, maar het Baskenland, een autonome regio in het noorden, misschien nog wel het meest. Franco krijgt er steun van de Italiaanse fascisten, én nazi-Duitsland, om de Basken te bestoken en uit te roken. Na het geweld op straat, maakt Martin nu kennis met de constante dreiging uit de lucht.
De regering beslist daarom om Baskische kinderen te evacueren. Martin en zijn twee broers komen zo naar België waar ze amper twee jaar later terechtkomen in alweer een oorlog: de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Martin komt terecht in een katholiek tehuis voor jongens. Daar leert hij na een paar jaar priester Ceupens kennen, die in een verzetsnetwerk zit. Tussen 1942 en 1945 weet het netwerk honderden Joodse kinderen uit de klauwen van de nazi’s te redden. Dat Martin daarbij een belangrijke rol zou spelen, had hij nooit kunnen denken.
