Op de radio zingt Judy Garland ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow”. Over een jong meisje dat wil ontsnappen aan de zorgen en dat de wolken achter zich wil laten. Aan de andere kant van de regenboog. Was het een voorteken? Want op die 25ste september wordt in Antwerpen een baby geboren. Een klein meisje: Regine Sluszny. Joods is ze, een van de zowat 70.000 joden die in 1939 in België wonen.
Vijf jaar later zal daar maar de helft meer van overblijven. Bijna 25.000 zullen de nazi’s er op transport zetten, vanuit de Dossinkazerne in Mechelen, naar de poorten van de waanzin.
De rest? Ontsnapt, door onder te duiken. België weet 5.330 joodse kinderen uit de gaskamers te houden, door hen te verstoppen.
Regine is er één van. Sinds kort mag ze zich barones noemen. Als eerste joodse vrouw ooit. Een beloning voor haar onafgebroken inzet om de herinnering aan de Jodenvervolging levend te houden. Wat nog het meest verbaast, wanneer ze thuis haar verhaal vertelt: de grote dankbaarheid die ze nog altijd koestert voor het leven. Trots en vol vuur praat ze, nadat ze jaren stil is gebleven. Uit schuldgevoel, voor wie het niet heeft overleefd.
