De vader van Wilfried De Metsenaere was in mei 1940 telegrafist voor de Belgische overheid.
De Belgische regering sloeg in mei meteen op de vlucht om in ballingschap te kunnen voortwerken, vanuit Londen. Telegrafisten zouden van levensbelang zijn voor alle communicatie, en dus moesten ze mee, ook vader De Metsenaere.
Het gezin met 6 kinderen moet dus de oversteek naar Engeland maken. Onderweg worden ze geconfronteerd met bombardementen en kruipen ze door het oog van de naald.
