Jarenlang hadden Jonas en Bente een relatie, maar een gezonde relatie was het niet. Op een avond gaat het helemaal mis: Jonas zegt dat hij zichzelf wilde doden, volgens Bente wilde hij haar om het leven brengen.
Jonas heeft in zijn leven al langere tijd last van meerdere stoornissen. Hij is angstig, gaat conflicten uit de weg en heeft een laag zelfbeeld. Ook zegt hij dat hij bang is voor Bente, omdat zij hem zou commanderen. Volgens Bente is dat niet waar en is het juist andersom.
De twee gebruiken samen slaapmedicatie. Jonas maakt die op een avond in april 2024 klaar, en schrijft daarbij een brief waarin hij afscheid van Bente neemt. Hij wil zichzelf doden met het slaapdrankje, maar dat mislukt: hij overleeft het.
Drie maanden later doet Bente aangifte: volgens haar wilde Jonas niet alleen zichzelf doden, maar ook haar leven beëindigen. In de rechtbank moet Jonas zichzelf verantwoorden.
Verslaggever Ard Schouten volgt de zaak namens AD Utrechts Nieuwsblad: „Ze hadden een vrij toxische relatie, ze konden eigenlijk niet met en niet zonder elkaar.’’
