Nasceu em Lisboa a 17 de julho de 1961, filho do poeta e escritor comunista Orlando da Costa e da jornalista Maria Antónia Palla que, desde cedo, se destacou na luta pelos direitos das mulheres. António Luís dos Santos Costa, 'babush' para a família e amigos muito antigos, recorda com saudade a "experiência extraordinária" que viveu no ciclo preparatório no Conservatório Nacional: "A escola era perto de casa e os meus pais queriam que eu tivesse educação musical, mas eu preferia jogar futebol. Não aprendi nenhum instrumento, um desperdício." Adolescente de Abril, andou na rua "a ver a Revolução, o Caso República foi a primeira manifestação do PS" em que participou, pouco depois de ter acompanhado o pai a um comício de apoio ao general Vasco Gonçalves e não ter gostado do "ar quase religioso" com que os comunistas cantavam o Avante. Criado entre o Bairro Alto e São Mamede, andou de autocarro pela primeira vez quando se inscreveu na Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa. Foi aluno do atual Presidente e, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, deu-lhe um 17, a melhor nota que teve na licenciatura. Foi monitor na Faculdade, fez o estágio de advocacia no escritório de Jorge Sampaio e Vera Jardim - do qual era sócio o seu tio, Jorge Santos - mas cedo guinou para a política, sua verdadeira motivação, para a qual está talhado com uma vocação instintiva. Foi deputado, eurodeputado, líder parlamentar do PS - função da qual não gostou - mas adora "funções executivas". "Adorei ser presidente da Câmara, adorei ser ministro da Justiça, adorei ser ministro de Estado e da Administração Interna. Gosto muito das funções que atualmente exerço, portanto, tenho tido felicidade", confessa o primeiro-ministro. "Se os calendários eleitorais se cumprirem trabalharei com um terceiro Presidente", afirma. O futuro político será público quando o laico, intuitivo e hábil negociador António Costa achar oportuno anunciá-lo. O atual mandato é para cumprir até ao fim, garante o primeiro-ministro.
