Terwijl in Spaanse trekpleisters als Barcelona, Malaga en Mallorca steeds heviger tegen massatoerisme wordt gedemonstreerd, is het moeilijk voor te stellen dat in het grootste deel van Spanje nauwelijks toeristen komen. Sterker nog: op veel plekken tref je überhaupt heel weinig mensen. Het Spaanse platteland loopt leeg - en dat is problematisch.
Want hoe minder mensen er wonen, hoe minder er wordt geïnvesteerd in voorzieningen als infrastructuur, vrijetijdsvoorzieningen, woningen en arbeid. Met als gevolg dat een gebied nóg minder inwoners aantrekt en steeds verder in verval raakt. Naar schatting heeft Spanje drieduizend onbewoonde dorpjes.
Voor deze aflevering reizen we af naar het dorpje Bárcena de Bareba, gelegen in de autonome regio Castilla y Leon. Je kunt hier uren ronddwalen zonder een mens tegen te komen. Tot voor kort was de Spaanse Carlos de enige inwoner van het spookdorp. Maar sinds begin dit jaar zorgt het Nederlandse koppel Maaike en Tibor samen met hun twee kinderen én hulptroepen uit Nederland er voor een hoop reuring.
Voor 3,5 ton kochten Maaike en Tibor het grootste deel van de verlaten huizen op, met het doel het dorp op te knappen en weer nieuw leven in te blazen. Ook legt het stel een voedselbos aan, waarmee ze uiteindelijk zelfvoorzienend hopen te kunnen leven. Een documentaire over de verwoestijning van Spanje deed ze besluiten om Amsterdam in te ruilen voor deze plek. Hoe vergaat het ze tot nu toe? En wat is hun missie hier precies?
Ook reizen we af naar Burgos. Luis Marcos doet aan de universiteit van deze stad onderzoek naar La España Vacía (‘Het lege Spanje’), al omschrijft hij het liever als La España Vaciada, ofwel ‘Het leeggemaakte Spanje’. Want dit gebied was niet - in tegenstelling tot de Schotse hooglanden of Lapland - altijd al zo dunbevolkt. Hij verklaart waarom de mensen zijn vertrokken, en op welke manier grote bedrijven nu profiteren van die leegloop.
