Moldavië, Bosnië, Noord-Macedonië en uiteraard Oekraïne. Het zijn alle 4 landen die graag toe willen treden tot de Europese Unie. Maar daarvoor moeten deze landen wel allemaal voldoen aan de zogeheten Kopenhagen-criteria. Maar ook als deze landen hier eenmaal aan voldoen is de democratie geen gegeven. Zie Polen en Hongarije waar de rechtsstaat deels is afgebroken, in Polen wordt die nu weer hersteld.
Dat bespreek ik in deze aflevering met Giselle Bosse, universitair hoofddocent Europese internationale Betrekkingen aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Bosse ziet dat de nieuwe democratieën nog niet ver genoeg zijn om toe te kunnen treden tot de Europese Unie.
De EU kent 27 lidstaten waarvan een groot deel in het verleden geen democratische rechtsstaat was. Denk aan voormalige communistische landen uit het oosten, maar ook militaire dictaturen zoals in Zuid-Europa. Hoe hebben die landen die transformatie naar een democratie gemaakt waardoor ze lid konden worden van de EU?
