Die Große Moschee befand sich im Zentrum von Bagdad, umgeben von zahlreichen kleineren Moscheen in der Nachbarschaft. Sie war ein Ort des täglichen Gebets, wo die Gemeinde zusammenkam, und wo man sich um die Armen und Hungrigen kümmerte. Die Moschee war für alle da, für die Mächtigen ebenso wie für die einfachen Leute ... Sie hören den Gebetsruf, der in der ganzen Stadt widerhallt. Der Ruf ertönt aus der Ferne, wenn die Hauptmoschee damit beginnt, und breitet sich dann von Viertel zu Viertel aus. Er gehört zur Geräuschkulisse der Stadt, er übertönt den Straßenlärm und Alltagstrubel und fordert die Stadtbevölkerung auf, sich zum Gebet zusammenzufinden.
