Begeben wir uns auf einen Ausflug zu einem antiken Bauwerk, das im mittelalterlichen Bagdad eine zentrale Rolle spielte: die Karawanserei bzw. der Funduk. Diese Gebäude wurden ursprünglich von den Achämeniden als Tavernen bzw. Herbergen am Straßenrand erbaut, um Reisenden Unterkunft und Verpflegung zu bieten. In dem Maß, wie sich die Stadt weiter entwickelte und ausdehnte, wuchsen auch die Funduks mit.
