O Brasil desperdiça em média 40,3% da água tratada antes que ela chegue às torneiras da população. A constatação é do estudo "Demanda Futura por Água em 2050: Desafios da Eficiência e das Mudanças Climáticas", do Instituto Trata Brasil. Do total perdido, 60% tem origem em vazamentos e o restante é em decorrência de furtos e erros de medição.
Em entrevista à Rádio Eldorado, a presidente-executiva do Instituto Trata Brasil, Luana Pretto, disse que o volume perdido poderia abastecer 50 milhões de pessoas em um ano. Ela defendeu mais investimentos para evitar o desperdício e apontou que o problema pode se agravar com as mudanças climáticas.
