In de nacht van 10 op 11 april 1934 werd de kunstwereld opgeschud door een brutale daad. Twee panelen van het wereldberoemde altaarstuk "Het Lam Gods" van de gebroeders Van Eyck verdwenen uit de Sint-Baafskathedraal in Gent. Eén paneel, Johannes de Doper, werd weken later teruggevonden. Maar het andere - De Rechtvaardige Rechters - blijft spoorloos.
Het is de grootste kunstroof in de Belgische geschiedenis. En het verhaal zit vol met bizarre wendingen. Zo is er de mysterieuze afperser die zichzelf "D.U.A." noemde, die eiste een miljoen frank losgeld. En ene Arsène Goedertier die op zijn sterfbed bekende dat hij wist waar het paneel was, maar het geheim meenam in zijn graf.
