Op 18 maart 1990 klinkt, in het holst van de nacht, de deurbel van het Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Buiten de deuren van dit imposante gebouw is overal de driekleur van de Ierse vlag te zien. Het is namelijk St. Patrick's Day. Maar deze ongenodigde gasten komen hier niet om iets te vieren. In de chaos van de feestvreugde zal de grootste kunstroof aller tijden plaatsvinden.
Hoe hebben deze dieven dat voor elkaar gekregen? Wie zaten er achter deze kunstroof? En komen de gestolen werken, waaronder die van Rembrandt en Vermeer, ooit nog terug?
