Deze week bespreken we de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in de aanhoudende strijd tussen Donald Trump en de Federal Reserve. Afgelopen week liet de president via Truth Social weten dat hij bestuurder Lisa Cook wil ontslaan vanwege vermeende hypotheekfraude. Trump dringt al langer aan op renteverlagingen door de Fed, en tegenstanders zien deze stap dan ook als een poging om druk uit te oefenen op de centrale bank — wat de onafhankelijkheid van het instituut in gevaar zou kunnen brengen. Als het daadwerkelijk tot een ontslag komt, zou dat een unicum zijn in het 112-jarige bestaan van de Federal Reserve.
Bij de post zit deze week een onderzoek over het basisinkomen. Na publicatie van NRC bespreken Anna en Marijn of het idee van het invoeren van een basisinkomen nu definitief van de baan is. En als dat niet de oplossing is, hoe pak je armoede dan wél effectief aan?
De vraag van de week gaat over stablecoins: hoe kun je controleren of deze gedekt zijn, en zou het creëren van nieuwe coins tot inflatie kunnen leiden?
