Dawn is joined by author, music producer and artist Jimmi Toro to talk about his devastating story of child abuse. Jimmi talks about his own abuse and how it impacted him as an adult and how he has managed to heal. He also discusses systematic child abuse in the world, and how to deal with trauma as well his charity work and his book HEAL.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Trauma isn’t so much about what happened to you but the wound it leaves upon you.
Child abusers are very good at hiding what they do, they are often master manipulators and hide in plain sight.
Most children who are abused are abused by someone they know.
Once a child is abused, if they can find safety after in someone who loves them then they can heal. Jimmi had no one to turn to as a child and what happened instead is it stored the abuse inside of him.
Not being believed by adults they tell compounds the trauma for children who have been abused.
Jimmi was a victim of ritualistic child abuse which included being buried in a coffin alive inside a dead adult body. An unimaginable experience.
To heal from abuse, you have to go back and reconcile with each and every experience, and heal from every single time.
When Jimmi started his process of healing, he studied and read countless books and research on trauma and healing.
Jimmi had repressed memories of his experiences of abuse, they didn’t start coming back to him until he was in his 40’s and it took time for him to start the healing process through talk therapy.
Part of the healing process for Jimmi was to name the emotions he felt when remembering the abuse and to then go back and make his younger self feel safe.
Sadly it is common that those who have been abused or been through trauma never heal.
