Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome back to the Football Today podcast for Matilda's Special episode.
I'm your host Leam mccally and also known as the
Stats Guy. Joined as always, I'll start with you, Marcus Barzana.
He's not as exciting, but Marcus.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Till special episode, special time when the Matilda's plays, So
I'm looking.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Forward to it. I wish Hi until he could just
play all year round. We've got Tilly's expert. I'm calling you, Olivia.
He's back on the show. How you going.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
I'm excited, always great to be back on the podcast.
And yeah, Matilda's get around it long time.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
I feel like he's been to almost every Matilda's match
ever in your life.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
In your life, I still haven't met Sam Curb.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
That is the aim of the show is to get
her on the show. Maybe when we're touring England we'll
get that.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I think should be pretty busy over the next yes,
we'll get into that.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Listens a lot of news with Sam Kerr. We are
here as the fan Tilda's. We were calling that this
time last year. I remember calling us the fan Tilda's
cheering on the Aussies as they take on Brazil in
a two match series. Going through the predicted lineups, Tilly's
news scores, goalscorers hopefully yeah, a lot of Tilly's goalscorers
before he's Make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel

and Instagram. We're going to be doing lots of fun
shorts on there. With the Premier League. We're doing a
Betfair Premier League show every week every Wednesday. Marcus and
I so get around that as well. Around the grounds.
I always have this little segment at the start that
everyone I don't know if everyone likes it, but I
like Olivia likes it, so that's good. I'll start with
this one. Sam Kerr announces that she's having a baby
with partner Christy mwer So. Christy plays at west Ham

(01:29):
in the WSL. Pretty awesome that she's having a baby.
I wanted to put this question to you guys, if
she's having a baby, where is the baby going to play?
She is? I think she is. They're having a baby.
Christy Mwis is from America. You've got Sam Fiel obviously
and aussy and then they're going to be brought up
in England. Where is this baby going to play? It's
going to be a superstar doing It's like Sam scoring
goals from outside the bottom hoping.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
It's a girl Sam Kerr. But it has to be.
It has to be.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
I hate to admit it on love for the Present Australia,
but in all fairness it probably should be American.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Christie is having the baby might have, but then they
might go. We can't decide. Maybe, I mean, you like
the Lion.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I like the Lions. Out of all three teams, U,
s A or England are the better teams in Australia.
Same curse better than Kirsty Millers.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
That's true in my opinion. The fact that we're having
this conversation is so funny, Like the big sports people
have babies like I remember, like Chris Jardon af like
people are talking about his kids or carry out and
things like that.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
They're going to be pressure on the on.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
The tracks age. You know that those are tiktoks with
the project. They'll be doing the same.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
What is if they don't even they might not even
want to play football.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
That's right, they can do what they want, you know,
but no, I knew that would bring.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Up some funny I'm happy for the movie great. I
think yes, Sam serves it. Ye Cher they're a great couple,
so yeah, it should be good.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Getting into some more serious news, Mary Fowler and Courtney
Vine pulled out of the Brazil matches juda mental and
physical fatigue. So you've got Courtney Vine who's pulled out
before due to mental fatigue, and then Mary Fowler. I
feel like just in football in general, we've talked about
this when we talk about the men's there's a lot
going on, too many matches and things like that.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
They're very fatigue.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Mary Fowler is still very young and plays like I
don't know, sometimes twice a week.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
It's very tough on the bodies there. So I don't
mind them pulling out of.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
This this week. It's all right, especially in Mary's cases.
They've got the Champions League, then they have the WSL
and then coming to Australia which from.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
The UK, which is big trip, big.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Trip, big camp. Yeah, I think it's all right just
for some friendly games. It's not like it's a competition
or a world couple court fires or anything like that, so.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
I think it's right. Yeah, I think the fans will
be missing her. Obviously we love Mary Feller, but that's
fair enough. And Courtney Vine's same situation. She's a little
bit older as well and needs to not get injured
and things like that, so I don't mind that talk
about injuries. We'll just finish on this for around the grounds.
Gory's out, Contrady Goyes out with his shoulder. West Ham
fans will be annoyed with that.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
It's bad luck.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
She's always, yeah, always injured the best, like CDM, one
of the best. I reckon, yeah, that's that's a brutal loss.
Next one, Claire Wheeler, who's been really good. She's got
a leg injury. I don't think it's too bad, but
she's definitely out for like the next month or so,
so be brutal. There. The last one that I wanted
to touch on Hannah Lowry, who's been killing it for
Sydney FC. She's just twenty one, got her first call

(04:29):
up to the Matilda's. Everyone's so excited and then I
think just two days ago she does her a cl
as they were heading to the camp.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
So unfortunate.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Can we say, oh so hard to recover from that
as well? I know ACL injuries.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
So I hope she can recover well, because there is
actually some matildas that.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
I've recovered well and then gone on to have good careers.
But brutal just I think just when you're just.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Going getting your first call up, obviously working towards that
her whole life. To get that phone call, she must
have been so excited and then to have that Yeah, man,
that's just so disappointing.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
I don't do her repair rehab at Thetida just so
she's hanging around.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
It's probably it's obviously bad news for her, Yeah, it
also means good news for someone else who can. Yeah,
there's a lot of claim and coming to the squad. Yeah,
that's different.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
As we'll touch on, there's a lot of people in
the squad. There's thirty six, so there's a lot of
young players coming through. I think more so just to
get some young players around like the bigger names and
learn from each other.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
So it's actually a good time for yeah, Matida's football.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Talking about that, we're going to go through the predicted
Matilda's eleven next including the thirty six player squad, so
they've got that squad to face Brazil and Chinese Taipei.
So I think we'll smash the Chinese, but we have
as I'll get in later. Actually had a really good
run against Brazil, which surprised me. Next one about the squad,
Claire Pocinkon will play her last ever international match. I

(05:50):
thought it might be a few matches, but it will
probably be in her hometown, Brisbone, which is the very
first match, So she'll finish her career in her hometown.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
Absolute legend of the Matilda's.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Guys have been there since the beginning, since all the
hard chips, you know, coming through, seeing the growth of
the squad. Yeah, ended in her hometown. I think would
be really cool and yeah, just a legend of the game.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Can we chuck her off first Asian Cup?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yes? She was, Yeah, she probably was one hundred and
sixty seven appearances of the most Cat player until his history.
Can we obviously she'll start in defense if she she's on.
Can we just chuck her up front ahead? I don't
think she's got many goals being a defender. Play against Brazil.
She played against Apparently she's going to play the first
one against Brazil because in her hometown Brisbane, and then

(06:33):
she probably won't play the ones after that as like
a send off for the first game.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Yeah, so she won't feature against Chinese type.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
I don't think it's not as big of a game.
I guess with the Square thirty six as well. Yeah,
they're going to.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Rotate a lot. I think Chinese, especially in these sort
of matches, you can have lots of subs. You can
there's like no caps on, like four or five subs
like in other tournaments.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
And get the younger girls in, get them run.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
But yeah, she's a legend.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
I saw Ali Carpenter a video during the week just
saying how much he looked up to her, and like
all of the players, even the older players look up
to Claire Poker.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
That's I'm not trying to say that.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah there, she's been around the books. How many ceps?
Over one hundred and sixty seven?

Speaker 3 (07:10):
That is wild man?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
That's happy to.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Have over one hundred for your nation is yeah, well
have over one fifties.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I might have to look into that for our episode
next week, if comparing like her to just anyone that's
played international.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Football, because that's a lot of matches. Yeah, so good
on air and we're very happy with that.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Next one I want to talk about in the squad
is friend of the show, Olivia's mate Carlie Right as well.
Carlie Ross back and he's back in the squad obviously
had so many injuries.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
She had a nacy injury.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
I think she had another an injury.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
She's at other things.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
I'm working on a game playing for Melbourne City, so yeah,
to see the progress and yeah, no, congrats to her
Friend of the show. Hopefully get her on again.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
So yeah, back in the squad. That'd be cool if
we can get her on because last time it was
former Matilda, but now it's current Matilda and she's killing it.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
So what I Carlie were very excited for that.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
I wrote this down, so I want you guys to
give me an opinion on this one. I'm looking got
a full strength predicted eleven here because I'm not sure
if a few players are out. I think Michelle Hammon
might be arrested because she's got injured for Camber United.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Yes, but she's still in the squad.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
So maybe come from Chinese typeager.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, but in terms of the Brazil matches that we're
covering today, I think this will be the squad, So
let me know how we think. Obviously Mckenzieannold in goals,
we're pretty happy with that one. Then I'm going five
at the back just for Claire Polkinghorn. Okay, but this
is pretty.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Claire might be able to push up well.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Think we probably will play four over the back. I
had a look at new manager's first game.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, Tom Somannie, Yeah, we haven't talked about that. Tom
Sommarone's first game back. Obviously it was the coach in
the nineties and early two thousands, but now.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Now he's back. Game that interesting is pretty interesting.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Anyway, I'm going Ali Carpenter, Claire Hunt, Alana Kennedy, Claire Pokinghorn.
I reckon she might even just play the first forty
five thirty minutes because it's got a bit of al
and you'll be cheering on your Claire Pokinghorn.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Then Steph Catley.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Then we've got midfield Kyra Kurney cross Emily to Miky Yallop,
and then forwards I've got Caitlin Ford and Hailey Rasso.
They actually were starting Yallop and Fouler in our last
three matches as the Fallards, but.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
It was a bit weird.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
So we did beat Germany.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
Yeah, but everything else didn't go well.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
So what do you guys think about that?

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Or I'm not missing anyone in the squads.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
I'm happy with that.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I think that's fairly strong. Yeah, there's a lot of
injuries obviously in that midfield, so yeah, it would be
good for players like Van Eggmon and Yellop you too, Yeah,
lift in Obviously they have a lot of experience, but
I think the Matildas probably need a bit of experience
with a new new coaching now. So to lead the way, do.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
You think Grant will come back?

Speaker 1 (09:39):
I didn't think about. Yeah, true, she might be ahead
of Yellop or she might even swat for Polking more
and possibly because I really like our defense is always
cut to hunt Kennedy Kately like that is just awesome.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
I've got the PSG could even come.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
In at a sub up front.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
It could work.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Yeah, I really really really liked seeing that back.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yes, she's been killing it. Actually I had to look
at her status.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Let me get down.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yeah, she's great.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
She was amazing race, yes she was.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
And then it was the twenty nineteen World Cup she
was Yes, yeah she played and she did great there.
But then obviously didn't play in the last one, so.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, yeah, maybe yeah we girls or Western United there,
Western United, Yeah, you've been traveling to any games this
as I started for.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
The women's Yeah, get around them.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
I love the women's clothe The Gazo had nine goals
three seats for Western United last year. He has already
got two goals in three matches, so she hasn't played
for a while in the matters, but they're probably like,
we've got.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
To reward the form.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Emily Gilnick is also interesting squad. They've got to even
though there is a lot of young players coming in
the older like game that's awesome. Thomas Money just wants
to see they can do.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
Has six goals in four matches for the victory so
far the season to ye, I could have seen a
whole bunch.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Of w LE plays and then yes, yeah, which which
is great even having a look here, that would be
at least at least half the squads from Yeah seven.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
So I actually read the thing.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
I just remember seventeen players out of the thirty six
Yeah from the w League, which also I think the
Double League is the last couple of seasons. There's been
a lot of hype around the Matilda's. The crowd's getting better,
the standards getting better. There's even a few players like
Chitiak going back there, Hayman and things like that.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
Really good.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Sayman could go off to Europe, as we've said many times.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Yeah what happened with that? That was shambles.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Yeah, there's a lot of great international players coming to
Australia to play as well.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Yeah, as the outstandard as well.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah, I remember off the top of my head the
players like Hannah Keene, who's yes superkey plays up from
for c United. Yeah, there's been some really good players.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
Yeah. I love that.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
So, yeah, that's good. That's my predicted eleven. It might
not be the best because there's a few interesting things
like that, but I think five of the backs start
with that. Claire Bolkan is going to tear it up
in their last ever match, and then we'll get into it.
So Matilda's versus Brazil preview, we're going to go through
the two matches here.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
I think it's going to be some really fun matches.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
I was surprised though we are undefeated the Tillies in
our last eight meetings with the Canaries.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
The Brazil team. That's pretty crazy because Brazil have a
good team.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Yeah. I like playing against Brazil. They just it's good,
great country, great footballing nation. Yeah to be undefeated. I
actually thought we had lost one, but haven't, so I.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Know it's crazy.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
I had a look.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I went to a Brazil World Cup match when they.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
Were silverst jam Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
That was nil l but the atmosphere was also. I
was sitting next to the Brazil fans. They were going
absolutely off. The Jamaica fans were like crying, like, oh
my god, we just drew to Brazil. The vibes they
were awesome. So I think wherever this match is, the
first one in Brisbane, there's gonna be lots of Brazil fans.
They're going off. The last two meetings were in twenty
twenty one. There was a two to ol and then
a three to one. I think Sam Kerr had three
goals across those two games. Obviously, no Sam Kurr this one.

(12:46):
So no backflips someone. If someone scores to they do
a Sam cur tribute.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
No, I wonder.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
What should be back. I think she started training with
Chelsea again, so that's good. Yeah. People thought she might
be in the squad for this one, but maybe the
next game.

Speaker 4 (13:00):
She might have actually trade.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Has she trademark to bafflet that.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
I think everyone knows that that's the same curve, like.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Like if we did it, we might get a call
from like her agent or something saying, you can't say, Sam,
that's what we like.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
I don't know all right.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Game one is at some Corp stadium in Brisbane, so
usually rug they're playing at these rugby stadiums in Queensland,
but big stadium, so they'll have a big crowd there. Thursday,
nine pm Australian Eastern downtime, a bit of late, a
bit late for us in Melbourne, but I'm sure we'll
still be watching that even if this. I'm sure you've
stayed up at three am and so of you watching
EP exactly right. We'll go through it quickly, goalscorers and predictions.

(13:42):
I'll start with you, Olivia.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
I'm going draw for the first game, Marcus, but I'm
just thinking getting back into it. They want to play
a defensive game, probably no, Mary Fowler. I think just
let it say they've got four games in Australia, one
one with Rasso Funn in the back of the net,
Rasso on the winger.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
I don't mind that there's a new manager. Bounds count
towards international football. That's a question I.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Reckon like a bit of free flow.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
There's really a new manager that some old dude.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
It's somebody the older with the mustache that that got
us through all the hard times in the nineties.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Look, I think we fall in the back of the net.
I'll go, but I think we lose. I think, ah,
we're not as good as we were. We were beating
Brazil back in Yeah. Yeah, a fair bit of injuries.
Some of our best players are out of the squad.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
New manager.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
There's a big squad, so it could I don't know
if that would be a good thing or a bad
thing in terms of, you know, jeling and cohesion.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
Score.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
I think to one, I'm going to go to one Australia.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
I think that are going to do really well here.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
I wouldn't mind seeing yeah, Caitlin for I think it's
going to be on the wings because I feel like
both teams play on the wings, both teams have a
bit of base, So I don't mind Kaitlyn Ford in
this one being really good for Arsenal. Of course, I
think dropped off a little bit the start of the
wl Cell season, but then it's come back into form,
same as Steph Catley. So I reckon she's going to
hit the scoreboard. But I reckon, yeah, Rasso or Caitlyn Ford.

(15:09):
And then if I was just going to score another goal,
maybe Kyra Cooney Cross And she scored it absolutely bad
against Germany. That was halfer Gory was saying, who hasn't
scored yet Kyra? And then she scored that night. I
love caira queen, She's awesome, So I reckon she might
get on the scoreboard and I feel like fan favorite
and run will be going nuts for that. All right,

(15:30):
Game two which is on Sunday at seven thirty five.
It's better better time for us. We'll watch it anytime.
But anyway, Rabina Stadium, I thought this was right be
made a wish could get us. Maybe they can get
a sponsorship there or something that's in the Gold Coast.
So that's another rugby gram so big stadium that's going
to be. I think it's actually SeaBus super Stadium, Yeah,

(15:51):
something like that. So let's get into the goal scorers
and predictions for this one. Do we think it's going
to be similar or maybe once they've had one game
under their belt.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
I reckon we win this two nil. There we go
to nil the draw and then they're like fire in
the belly that we I like it too, nil on
rass on forward goals, just going safe on the wings.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
Ye can't go wrong like it.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
I'm going to go slightly more positive, but I'll go
with draw still. I just think with such a big
spread of mind, we'll.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Be rotating quite a bit.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Yeah, I think some some players will get there, probably
not their first minutes for the Tillies. No, there's some
of it, but some of their their first minutes. Obviously,
some people haven't been in the squad yep for that long.
So yeah, I'll go one one. I'm a big fan
of haliy Rasso, so hopefully she finds backer than it.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Yep. I'm going to go.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
What am I going to go? I haven't even thought about. No,
I'll go one nil.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
I think I think the first one we're going to
be favor of Australia is I think, Yeah, the record
speaks for herself. We've had a really good run against Brazil.
I think it was twenty seventy and we've beat him
six to one. I don't think it's gonna be like that.
That was sort of a bit more of our prime,
i'd say in the Tillies, I think I'm just going
to say a big call is someone is going to
have their first minutes and someone is going to have
their first ever goal.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
For the middle. I feel like in this one, I
feel like.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
They're going to be rotating the squad a lot. First one,
big send off the Claire balking, I reckon, I have
a full strength second one. I reckon with this thirty
six player squad, you've got to rotate the players. I reckon.
There's going to be some people debuting first golf for someone.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
I think next week that will happen.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
You're probably going to sense what do you know what
number Claire Pokinghorn is?

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Because because typically typically numbers in soccer in the sendoff game,
for war to send off game, they get subbed off
normally they're playing number. Normally they get sub.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Is that a thing? That's a thing?

Speaker 4 (17:34):
Well, what do you mean they're playing number? Like at
that minute, at that minute, well.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
She's number four, So I hope she doesn't get it's
like you playing it gets one touch there, come off.
She definitely get subbed off throughout this game. Yeah, so
she's number four. I think she's been number four all
the way through because obviously the lower numbers are for
the better players, and she's been there for a long time.

(18:00):
If it happens in the fourth minute that you predicted it,
but depends obviously depends what number you have.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
But the players I know in the past for men's football,
that's been the case. They's like John Terry, Dido, Drug
buggint subbed off at their player number.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Yeah, I didn't even say them before.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
That's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Before we finish off, I'm just going to say player
of the across the two matches, like player of the
match up, player of the little series that we've got
going here. Doesn't have to be a goal scorer or
anything like that. But who do you think is going
to stand out?

Speaker 4 (18:25):
Guys?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
I'm just gonna Reford have said her twice to be scoring.
She's a leader in the squad. Yeah, a lot of
the young girls and obviously still got Katli and the
other older girls, but I think four just knows when
to step up, and yeah, that's gonna be my player
of the match.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
I'm gonna go Coracone Cross obviously with some lacking depth
a little bit effort as well.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Yeah yeah, with the.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Likes of with the likes of Gory injured her experience,
even though she's still really young, it's going to be
crucial nice.

Speaker 4 (18:54):
We don't always give love to defenders. I'm going to
go Claire hahnta.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
I've got the PSG top on. I reckon she's going
to tear it up. I reckon she could get on
this card a few heavy shots on the corners because
she's really good at those. And I think, yeah, that
one of the matches we'll get a clean chain will
be really to do with the work of the likes
of Clear Heart and Alana Kennedy. But I think, yeah,
Clearhart will stand out and get a lot of interceptions
back there in defense. All Right, that was a quick
one today, but we've done pretty well with Matilda's. Are

(19:16):
back with this next week as well.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Moving back for Tillias is Fan Tildas.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
