16-årige Gitte når aldrig hjem fra rideskolen den aften i 1979. Hendes cykel bliver fundet skæv og forladt i et levende hegn uden for Kolding. På jorden ligger små klumper af vat. Dagen efter gør et postbud et makabert fund på en mark.
Gitte er død – bedøvet med kloroform og efterladt langt fra gerningsstedet. Rejseholdet rykker ud og tusindvis afhøres.
I dag – 45 år senere – håber Gittes mor stadig på afklaring. Hun nægter at give slip.
