Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to the From the Podium Podcasts, where we feature
all of our daily press conferences rolled into one podcast
to help you get ready for the twenty twenty five
regular season. I'm Brock Danny he and on today's episode,
you'll hear from running back Jerome Ford, rookie linebacker Carson Schwessinger,
left tackle Jack Conklin, cornerback Greg Newsom, the second and

(00:31):
head coach Kevin Stefanski. First up, left tackle Jack Conklin
talks about the veteran offensive line and how he's approaching
his sixth season with the Browns.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
You've obviously, unfortunately had gone through the you know, the
injury situations where you've had to be kind of away
from the team.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Can you describe, because that's what Martin is going to do,
That's what Joka is going through.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Just what how do you try to maintain that connection
and what do you guys do in the locker room
to kind of try to keep those guys the one
and feel like they're still, you know, part of things
even when they're not.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
It's tough.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
It's tough, you know, anytime going through an injury like that,
especially a long term one, it is a lot on
you mentally and just having the guys you know, you know,
lucky offensive line especially such a close knit unit. You know,
the guys are always checking on me when I was
going through stuff, and I try to stay a part
of it, and you know, watch the games and be
on top of when I can help them with little things,
try to let them know, just keep my mind in

(01:26):
the game. But yeah, it's really just a day by
day thing. You got to take it with incremental steps
and and just look at the overall how quick, how
much you're recovering, and how much mentally you're you're standing
steady jack.

Speaker 5 (01:40):
The fact that you don't have to worry about a
ramp up this year like last year. How how nice
is that?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
And how did you feel?

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Oh, it's great, No, I feel I feel fantastic. It's
nice to be out here with the guys, you know,
getting all the work in and in these days we're
really building the chemistry and going through the tough times
and could be happier.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Check you guys online. Yeah, that's the same thing. You
guys want to lie. But how much what did you
think of doing?

Speaker 4 (02:04):
You know, it's good. I think it's good. It's good
for specially for the skill guys. You know, for us,
it doesn't really change too much. You know, we're hit
when we have pads on. It's it's pretty much full
go for us. But it's nice to get those reps
for the skill guys running backs and uh, you know,
get us moving run down the field, trying to keep
our guys up and moving piles.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
It's always good works.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
No, I think it's the first time we've done it here,
and uh, I think it's a it's a welcome change.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Get off. I have no idea. I didn't even see it.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
I didn't even see him get taken off.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I mean he was sitting up in the front of
the part. Well.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Good, I hope he's all right. Yeah, yeah, No, I
have no idea. Good he's getting he's he's working hard,
and he's getting better and better.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
He checked.

Speaker 6 (02:47):
It seems like an interesting scenario for the Offensive night
with Outside of the.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
One, four other starters were all last year their contracts.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
Like, is that something you guys think about or talk
about that this could be the last ride for guys
that have been here for a long.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
No.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
I think we just more think about, you know, especially
me and why and Joel, this would be our six
year playing together and with Poe's before. You know, I
think we just look at it as a extreme positive.
It's not very often you get a group of guys
like that. I get to get to stick together that
long and practice protect together and uh, we have a
lot of confidence in knowing each other, a lot of
uh you know communication, We don't even have to make verbally,

(03:22):
that just we just know how each other work. And
you know, that's a really leg up for us.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
How did you a contract change this year?

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Well, that's what they asked, you know, it's what we
came to him to do. I'm not even looking at that,
I'm looking at the season.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
How happy were you that Joel decided to come back
this season?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Oh? Pumped.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
You know, it's great to have him back. And again,
like like I said, with the core group of guys,
if you able to have that long term of a
of a group, is this huge?

Speaker 7 (03:49):
Jack one of the You're one of the guys that
talk last year about kind of going back.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
To what you've had done. Yeahfore, does this feel more
like what you what you wanted at the end of
last year? Definitely?

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Definitely, No, just the urgent the sense of urgency, just
you know, the run the ball, the marriage and run
pass stuff. That's you know, that's what this group is
brought in to do. And I'm just pumped that we're
going back to that and we're you know, we're having
a tough camp this year and guys are fighting and
it's it's great to see Jack.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
You talked about that, that non verbal communication. Mike mentioned
a couple of days ago that you know, sometimes a
gun mean a lot of different things just developed the
development of that, How how long and what's that process
like where you know, just the ground can mean Yeah,
do you know instinctually what's going on?

Speaker 4 (04:33):
I would say, you know, strictly speaking for me, and
why it just you know, it took probably a few
games into a twenty twenty that first year here, my
first year playing with him, and then just every year
it's a little bit more. You know, I can feel
when he's there, I know that he's thinking the same
things in the play that I'm thinking. And and be
able to have that bond with a guy you know
for six years like that is uh, it's it's special

(04:54):
and it just takes our game to another level.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Process for a quarterback right now?

Speaker 5 (05:00):
Just what effect does that have you off on you
guys up the front and these they all have distinct
different styles or do you feel like they kind of
play in a similar fashion to where it doesn't.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
Help you know, it's right now, you know, it's been
big inferensis just you know, with all of them getting
their cadence to be rhythmically the same, which is helpful,
but you know, there's definitely working pains with that. But
honestly that's kind of good for us. You know, it
makes it so we're not we're really having to tie
into the cadence, which I think is good for being
a camp, not being able to just be on you know,
one or two cadences. We're really changing the stuff up
and it's good work for us as an offensive line.

(05:35):
It's good work for the d line for staying on sides.
And uh, you know, I think all four quarterbacks doing
a good job again getting that rhythmically, getting on the
same page.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yea, the big narrative.

Speaker 8 (05:45):
Last season at last year's operating for our years, penalties and.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
That sort of thing. What are you guys doing early
in camp? Maybe differently kind of a bad back going.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Into Oh, I think it's just extreme ownership. You know,
if if there's an office, if you're off sides in
the uh in practice, you're gonna see in the big
score in front of everybody else, front of the entire team,
and it's going to be holding you holding each other accountable.
And uh, I think that is that's a huge, huge difference,
and it's something that's needed, that's needed. You know, if
you gotta look your peers in the face and you know,
tell them it's your fault and say sorry, and you
don't want to do that again.

Speaker 7 (06:14):
Remember a stretch of heat like this, extreme keating humidity
like this.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
In camp very many years?

Speaker 3 (06:20):
How is this getting you guys ready to play? And
what impact can.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Oh, it's great.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
You know you want to struggle.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
The camp is a struggle anyway, But the more struggle
you can get, the more you know, you really don't
find out who guys are until it's far. It's hard,
tough into the game. You know you're in a long
drive and really see how guys mentally are holding up.
And to to have weather like this and have longer drives, uh,
I think that's really what builds the fortitude of a team.
And you can really see what guys are made.

Speaker 6 (06:44):
Of talking about Miles can record practice, you know, like
you can wreck your game. And yesterday I think you struggled.
Do you want to struggle? Then he came to your
side a little bit. What are those conversations like in
that room, whether you're talking to or one just about
keeping your chin up when it's so hard to black.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
I think the biggest thing to do is is you know,
look at it from a positive manner. I mean, he's
a great player, but you gotta rise to the occasion.
You gotta when uh, when you know he's over there,
you gotta be a little just more locked in. I'm
a little more harder to push off with, you know,
off fast he's gonna come and frankly, to have that
every day in practice is only gonna make you a
better player. And you know, I'm happy like like like
you said yesterday, I asked him to come over to

(07:22):
the right because I wanted to get the work. I
just wanted to get his speed and feel that and
just having that ability to have a guy like that
to practice against this is huge.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
So that was you.

Speaker 6 (07:29):
You asked him how much I mean, I know the
other guys are Yeah, yeah, what kind of a difference
is it when he.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Well he's the he's the best fens man in the NFL.
I mean, I think that speaks for itself.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Next running back to Rome for it talks about his
increased opportunities and making the most of them in this
training camp, in a camp and you.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
Got through that was what was going on.

Speaker 9 (07:55):
Just something mind and none too serious. I'm able to
work through right now.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
I'm calling your head.

Speaker 7 (08:01):
You're still alive today and getting getting captil to the ground.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Not so d you see all that often?

Speaker 9 (08:06):
Uh in camps and hope uh yeah, that was first
time since I've been here. And as you can see,
the energy was how we loved it. Hopefully we get
to do it again.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
And how how do you.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Feel like you're just coming back off for an injury?
So that's kind of a like getting throw 'em right
into the frank damn right, and you were coming back
second day back and getting tacked get the round. But
you really love that. Yeah, hungry dogs. We gotta get
out there and we gotta work.

Speaker 9 (08:27):
Uh we in the dog days of camp right now,
and I think everybody willing to do what it take
to get better, to room with quenschaw.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
Knock here, and and dealing with the off the field
stuff like how do you guys handle the increased opportunities
I guess and that are available.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Reps wise, exactly what you said.

Speaker 9 (08:43):
You know, most people look at it as we short
on backs and we out there kind of tired. But
our group, our coach, our team, we look at it
is an opportunity for everybody else to get more reps,
get better. Dude, so usually wouldn't get reps getting more
reps and uh, that's how we look at an opportunity
your room.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Geese was talking yesterday about physicality and not he expects
out out of everybody. He doesn't look at like, this
guy's a physic, you know, physical bag.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
This guy's he expects out of everybody.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
How do you what do you in your mind define physic.

Speaker 9 (09:13):
Calb, stepping up in pass pro doing the dirty work, chipping. Uh,
if you see Miles Garrett come free on the edge,
hitting him and blocking him for as long as possible,
you know, just pretty much doing the dirty work with
the ball th or without the ball, running somebody over
with the ball, and you know, making sure you pass
block without the ball, Jerome.

Speaker 5 (09:30):
What do you think about this freddication to running the
ball this season?

Speaker 3 (09:34):
I'm a running back. I love it.

Speaker 9 (09:36):
I love it, and uh all the guys in our
room love it, and we we we ready to do
whatever it takes.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Does this feel like it's one in twenty three offs
to you? Oh? Yeah?

Speaker 9 (09:46):
Uh no, Actually it don't it feel like a twenty
twenty five offense? It We we nothing like we were before.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Uh. We looking at ticket further than where we took
it down year.

Speaker 7 (09:54):
Jim, You they obviously drafted to the ChIL Ny come back.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
They draft dealing like you agree to take the pick cut?
Does it ever think as well you're eighty percent? Uh?

Speaker 2 (10:04):
What is your mindset.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Coming in here? Uh?

Speaker 5 (10:06):
You know, knowing that they're overhauling your running game, or
that I don't do you ever with yourself all over again?

Speaker 3 (10:12):
Or what's your mindset?

Speaker 9 (10:13):
No matter who they bring in. I feel like every
year you gotta prove yourself. My mindset, it's always the same,
always the same, come in here and work. Uh, no
matter who's drafted. You know, if you got some new
guys in there, like you said, con Shawn and Dylan
and making sure that they feel comfortable in the room,
and you know they they find they way, helping them
find their way, not just as a football player, but
as somebody coming into the league, you know, being there
for them in that aspect, but also for me just

(10:35):
you know, continuing to work and you know, keeping the
game again. Does it give you given more motivation to
go out and show that you can be the the
workforce back? I don't need no more motivation, uh as
it's just as it's as dead work and it's what
I come and do come to work.

Speaker 7 (10:50):
Do you really feel good in that room?

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Also?

Speaker 9 (10:52):
The uh not really cause pr age Wise age wise
is older than me, so I honest I still feel
kind of young.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Droom. What your drowns fans expect from you? This?

Speaker 6 (11:00):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Hard work? Same same as always hard work.

Speaker 9 (11:03):
We looking at turning up a notch uh in the
run game pass block and pa uh route running?

Speaker 3 (11:08):
You know, uh, all of us, all of us is
a group. What about a running beadroom? Was you with
you guys? Uh? That doesn't contain Nick Chuck? How would
you be different?

Speaker 10 (11:16):
Is then for everybody?

Speaker 3 (11:17):
This year?

Speaker 9 (11:18):
Yeah, we lost we lost a great guy, a great
friend and a great teammate. But you know, I know
where he is. He gonna he gonna put the work
in and he you know, and he had gotta be
scared of uh for the other side.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Of the bar, you know.

Speaker 9 (11:31):
And Nick meant a lot to us, and it was
sad to see him go, But we understand the business
of the game.

Speaker 8 (11:37):
What do you what are your hope schools aspirations for
this season of their.

Speaker 9 (11:41):
So uh to contribute like be a uh, I guess,
contribute a lot whatever I can, whenever I can help
the rookies any way that I can be a light
for them and j you know, just be a key
piece of the team.

Speaker 6 (11:56):
It's a real true friend.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
It's like going there, represider. It over here it looks
like easy day with Deuce. Oh no, is that right? No,
it's not easy in the off season.

Speaker 9 (12:05):
We three weeks into the off season, maybe even a
week or two, and he like you working. I'm like,
br I'm tired, I got i gotta take a break.
But it's it's no days off with Deuce. It is
is n every day he gonna get the same guy
in the meeting. Uh. Out here, everything you see out
here is everything you see inside high, high intensity.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Uh, deuce is always on go.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
Seems like watching team drills and stuff out there, Carson
has given you guys a lot of a great What's
what's it like as a running back to see him
in the.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Middle of that's done? Oh he's great.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
He he played with he played with Uh.

Speaker 9 (12:37):
He played a hot speed, he played faster, and he
played physical like he not scared to stick his nose
in there.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
And I think that that's that's gonna help.

Speaker 9 (12:43):
Us in the long run when we go against those
backers who are just like him, I feel like he'll
be he gonna be real good in our defense.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
He's already really good at him. If you think about it,
where do you.

Speaker 6 (12:51):
See that a feeling guy that you to carry. I
know he talked to him kind of carries that hit
by the shoulders and not being the biggest guy, but
once to prove that he can handle him.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 9 (12:59):
You look at pass pro and you hear a loud thought,
it's probably Dylan. He come in and he bringing it
every time. And you know, just being where he from
Louisiana ban Rouge, I just feel like he gonna always
have a chip and he can always bring it.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Rookie linebacker Carson Schwessinger talks about his journey from a
college walk on to being at the helm of the
Browns defense.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
I enjoy that.

Speaker 11 (13:21):
Oh yeah, linebacker, that's what she lived for, running and hitting.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
So man, that's pretty common to college practices somewa.

Speaker 11 (13:29):
It depends some colleges are going going back and forth,
especially my first three years.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Oh, I'm sorry. With coach Kelly, it was it was
a little bit less.

Speaker 11 (13:36):
He brought a little bit of that pro but college
you will.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Hit a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah, with obviously j ok Her Jordan retiring, how much
more do you feel like there's more being thrown at
you put on your plate or more expectation wise?

Speaker 3 (13:51):
I think it's what even maybe when you got drafted.

Speaker 11 (13:54):
I think it just creates a lot of opportunity for
for the whole room and rooms for guys to step up,
whether on the field, uh uh, in in leadership roles
all those ways.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
And I think we've got a great room to be
able to do that. Before Jordan Love what kind of
you know, wisdom to be instill on you?

Speaker 11 (14:10):
And you know, yeah, uh I learned a lot from him,
even just in in the ota process. Just being able
to watch how he carried himself. I mean, you don't
you don't play that long.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
In the league and and do what he did by
by doing things wrong.

Speaker 11 (14:22):
So watching just how he prepared before practice and and
and what he would do in the meeting room and
and things like.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
That is a is a lot of what what I
learned from him.

Speaker 7 (14:30):
The other day to put on Sampson, I think was
it a topic.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Of conversation when you gotta pregret the film or anything.

Speaker 11 (14:38):
You always love of defense, You always love big hits,
so uh, you always look forward to to seeing those
on in on any film.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
So uh that that was a fun one. We learned
a case of tiger. Also as a master's in bio engineering.

Speaker 11 (14:53):
We we never crossed bass there, but he did. He
did tell me he would have been teaching my classes
some of them, so that that that's that's pretty cool
And we have a we kind of think similarly, which
which definitely helps.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
How much more I mean you talk to Bet when
you talked before about you know, the pre snap reads
and the importance of that and kind of how much
more comfortable do you feel like just right now in
in that part of your game.

Speaker 11 (15:19):
Yeah, I think every day I come out here, I
feel more comfortable. I think the big part of it
is getting reps on the field and and also in
the film room watching things I can correct, and then
also watching the offense and and seeing certain tendencies you're
gonna get that are that are different from college now
and things like that.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
With within the film room and still as early.

Speaker 9 (15:38):
But like, what do you think would be the biggest
difference from the defense you've played that you said, may.

Speaker 11 (15:42):
Compare the defense here here we're gonna attack and uh,
regardless of the defense you play as a backer, you
gotta be able to run, hit and find the ball,
so so that all stays the same, just a little
bit more of an attack style here, Yes.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
Sir, you does that want to first apologize and disrespect
the new game?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
You really played? Football? Got got felt like who was
does not? But I went back to the field. You
like that, Uh tell me that when he was a
walk one? So how could that affect you down?

Speaker 5 (16:10):
Like what type of your best that you earned day
and that you put into.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
Out on my trend?

Speaker 11 (16:14):
I think that goes back even to before I was
a walk on. I think even when I was little,
I always had the chip on my shoulder. I got
a brother two years older than me, so he always
had the size advantage. And you know, I was always
trying to do whatever it took to to win. And
I think that's just stay with me as a walk on.
It was the same thing, be willing to to do
whatever it takes, and and that chip's not something that's
ever gonna leave. So it's the same type of UH
work ethic and mentality that I take care appreciation.

Speaker 5 (16:36):
Christ When you look back to when you got here
on your draft or gyp any camp, consider.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Where do you think you've grown the most? I think,
really in all aspects.

Speaker 11 (16:44):
I think just UH, on the field, I've grown and
just understanding our defense, understanding UH the offense and and
and what offenses in the NFL like to do and
and things like that. And then just also just as
a person too. I think coming out here and being
in a new area is help me grow.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
So when you're talking about that chip on your shoulders,
so now you're the first pick in the second round,
you're not that un noticed.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
How do you keep that?

Speaker 11 (17:08):
I think, like I said, it's it's been with me
since since I've since I've been I mean, I can't
remember a time where I haven't wanted to go out
there and and try and be the best I can
when I'm on the field. And so uh, I think
it's just keeping that same mentality making sure that whatever
is happening, and it's it's my goal.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
To try and be the hardest work I can possibly be.
So it's not like you.

Speaker 11 (17:27):
No, No, I think every day I'm trying to get
better than the day before dot being the defensive community.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
And that's that's not the easiest thing to do with
your first coming de league. Just what's that challenge been
like for you and and why have you.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
Been able to and shout?

Speaker 11 (17:46):
So yeah, I think uh, for me, I just want
to be prepared and ready to be able to do
whatever they whatever they want me to do, and if
that's if that's what they're asking me to do, I
gotta be able to go out there and and make
sure that all the communication is good and and we're
able to to run the defense how we want to
run it.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
How was practice to the ground we haven't seen that.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
I love it.

Speaker 11 (18:07):
I mean, you talk to the defense were we're we're
all excited about any any live period we get because
that's what that's what we love to do, is get
guys on the ground.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Did we we would do that? Yeah? What are you sure?

Speaker 5 (18:21):
You know Jim Schwartz and just what he's asking of
you guys are in that front seven.

Speaker 11 (18:27):
I think at the end of the day, what we
want to be as a defense, we wanna we wanna
be physical, we wanna play fast and uh you know,
we wanna have some swaggers and passion out there. And
I think when you bring all that together, you get
a you get a defense that that's gonna be really great.
I think you I mean, everybody's gonna have the same
reaction to watching him.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
From walk on to uh per pick of the second round?

Speaker 3 (18:49):
How did you you just describe like those emotions during
that round?

Speaker 11 (18:53):
It's I it was definitely a great feeling to see
all the all the work that I'd put come come
to fruition there. But you know, I now it's it's
the next step and trying to trying to keep pushing
in and keep going.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Up next cornerback Greg news him the second talks about
his newly expanded role in the defense.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Where he's gonna miss this.

Speaker 10 (19:21):
Yeah, football obviously is football is He's a He's a
huge piece of our defense, but just at being a brother,
like it's bigger to me.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
It's bigger than the game of football.

Speaker 10 (19:31):
A guy that I've seen since all season started, been
putting in a lot of work. It's been one of
the last guys to leave the building every single day.
A guy that just brings passion energy. I'm gonna definitely
miss him out there as a brother. I'm gonna miss
him by every single snap. I definitely feel for him,
But I know he'll he'll get through this and he'll
be back to his form.

Speaker 7 (19:52):
He said about coming back, and he already talked point.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
That he had that conversation with him.

Speaker 10 (19:57):
Where he is, Yeah, so I talked to him. He's
in good spirits. Uh, he knows.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
You know.

Speaker 10 (20:05):
He put in everything f for this season to to
be the best that he can. So something like this
is obviously unfortunate, but you know, God has a bigger
plan for for all of us. So he's in good spirits.
Will be with him every step of the way for
his recovery process.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
How about a.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
Guy like Grant who had has suffered Attorney Kellys and come.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
Back to play and very high a lot. Uh do
you know if if Grant has to be able to
have words and then then maybe will have words with him. Yeah,
I'm not I'm not sure yet if he has talked
to him.

Speaker 10 (20:33):
I know obviously we have Michael Woods had had dealt
with that.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
You know, obviously d Watt is dealing with that.

Speaker 10 (20:39):
So we got guys that have dealt with it that
are currently in the recovery process. We got guys that
have done it and came back to full strength. So
I think those words will definitely help him.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Right you were, you were.

Speaker 7 (20:49):
Already gonna gonna have a big roun obviously, but this
sort of expands that year before. So for you, I
I mean, I guess, what what.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Do you need to do different now?

Speaker 10 (20:57):
If any of things nothing? This is what I'm used to.
Uh you know what I'm saying. Uh, So just go
out there, Uh bring the energy, Uh play my best ball.
I've been working hard this off season, Uh to get
to this moment. Whatever my role was gonna be, obviously,
like you said, my roles, I was gonna have a
big role regardless. So I'm just super excited, uh to
keep trying to get this team wins.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
What are your thoughts about your things? Yeah? My thoughts is,
you know everything uh uh handle itself. Right now.

Speaker 10 (21:28):
My focus is getting better each and every day at
training camp, and you know, keep stacking days, keep stacking days,
and you know, just have the season that you know
what I'm saying, I want, I wanna have. So the
future stuff, uh, we'll worry about that, you know, at
the end of the season or whenever you know that
that happens. But uh, right now, I'm just trying to
get better each day.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
So of course you wouldn't want happen to come keep
keep me close, friends, But I mean differ.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
Is this, uh thoughts a chance for you to try.

Speaker 7 (21:58):
To know what you really wanted playing more?

Speaker 3 (22:01):
You want to particle in your time last year?

Speaker 5 (22:03):
So is this a chance for you to just really
want to get back to the play that you know.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
You can be and especially in your time ten years.

Speaker 10 (22:11):
Yeah, I think it's really just a chance once again
to for all of us to to have a bigger role.
You know, we got younger guys like Cameron Mitchell, Miles
Hard and we got chigg Uh. We got a lot
of guys that are now are gonna have an opportunity
to step up their role, you know what I'm saying.
So I'm really focused on those guys, getting those guys ready.
I played at a ton of ball, so you know,
whatever role I need to play, I'll be I'll be

(22:33):
doing that and and perfecting that. But I'm just really
excited for you know, the young guys. They'll have a
chance to step up and uh make some players out
there this year.

Speaker 5 (22:40):
For look at your back on wol story.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
And this is the whole frame her. How do you think.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Act to you?

Speaker 3 (22:46):
And and just.

Speaker 5 (22:47):
Does that make your three one that you're not really
tack I mean your.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
Most practice is for gran through. Yeah, for sure. It
wa it was it was. It was terrible. You know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 10 (22:58):
I don't think people understand just getting thrown out there
in a in a league with the best athletes in
the world, not having a chance to really prepare, you know,
go through this build the callus you know, as as
we said, So I'm super excited that, you know, I've
been out here getting better each day, and I'm super
excited for the season.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
And you'll have season Greg to make sure that would
not happen. Again.

Speaker 10 (23:21):
Yeah, really the same type of training. I I ran
a lot more track workouts just to build the volume
on my legs. But you know, at the end of
the day, injuries happen in football. You can't you can't
predict 'em. You just pray that, you know what I'm saying,
that you don't get the injury bug, and sometimes that happens.
But you know, I've been preparing it each and every day,
just working out, uh, making sure I keep my body

(23:42):
good so I can uh be available for this team.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
What do you think about.

Speaker 5 (23:45):
Going life today and can't plate to the ground and
playing some almost.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
Football there today? It was fun. I had a good time,
you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 10 (23:53):
Anytime that you know, we were able to be a
little bit more physical tackle before we actually get to
the season. I actually really liked the idea, and I'm
soo excited that we got, you know, a chance to
be real physical today.

Speaker 5 (24:06):
Coming in with a different fights yet, whether that's.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Just mentally, whether it's physically.

Speaker 5 (24:12):
Just what how have you seen that manifest itself here
through the offseason programming in your stages of a training camp,
where do you feel like the defense is going to
give back to the personality we saw in twenty twenty
three rather than seas.

Speaker 10 (24:26):
Yeah, I just think we're we're doing everything with a purpose,
Like you know, everything we do, every meeting, every walk through,
every practice, We're coming out there with a purpose and
has to be great.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
You know, we're flying around the ball.

Speaker 10 (24:38):
Uh, we're going out there, We're we're u not making
the same mistakes twice and you know, I I feel
like the leadership, the energies is there from day one,
and I'm super excited to see what you know, what
we'll be able to do this season.

Speaker 11 (24:48):
Great.

Speaker 7 (24:49):
It feels like every day looking out there and Denzel's
having another great day.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
What is it about him? It just makes it so consistent,
so good. Like what's the secret saucer?

Speaker 10 (24:58):
Uh that his name is Denzel or than nobody else's is.
There's no secret. Uh, he's the best cornerback in the
in the league, so you know we expect him to
do that. Like I said, he doesn't have a weakness,
so uh, there's really no secret sauce.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
It's just his name's Denzel Award and nobody else is is.
So yeah, sorry, you obviously.

Speaker 5 (25:16):
Have a I disagree with Camp and that goes beyond
when the Scots drapped him. But how how have you
seen him grow from not just a frookie year, but
going back.

Speaker 10 (25:24):
Around what you talking about Western, Yeah, it's just I
feel like as a rookie, he he played meaningful snaps
for us, you know, when when guys did get nicked
up or he needed to come in, he he made
a crucial.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Partn there was no drop off him.

Speaker 10 (25:37):
And like we say, every guy has to be ready
when their name's called in and that's a guy that's
name is called and he'll be ready for uh for
the challenge.

Speaker 6 (25:45):
Great for you, And he'll be coming into this year.

Speaker 5 (25:47):
And I know you say your future just go that's
just care take care of himself. But Yo, what are
you looking for this year personally as well as professionally
to really uh you know, elevate your game either higher than.

Speaker 10 (26:02):
You scenes in this Yeah, like I said, it's just
to keep stacking days. I've said it since the day
I was drafted. I wanna be a Brown for life.
And in order to do that, I gotta I gotta
hold my end of the bargain. So I gotta go
back to being that player that I know I can
be and and the good thing is I'm starting this
training camp healthy, so I'm able to get out there
and get the reps in before the season starts. And

(26:24):
you know, that's my main goal. It's it's always been
my goal is to be a Brown for life. So
I gotta hold on my end of the bargain.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
Correct, We'll carry it next. So how excited where to see?
If you want to hear something.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
Like a team?

Speaker 10 (26:37):
I'm super excited. I will be at every single game.
I will be there supporting. Shout out of the w NBA.
I'm super excited that they got a team back here
and I know the uh, the fan base of travel.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
Uh, We'll all be there and it'll it'll be amazing. Greig,
what can we expecting you this season?

Speaker 1 (26:53):
If you're gonna get possially like, what can you do
better this season compere to last?

Speaker 3 (26:58):
Yeah, you can.

Speaker 10 (26:59):
You could just expect me just being the leader, being
out there with the guys, bringing the energy, getting better
each and every day, and holding my end end of
the bargain. Like I said, Denzel Ward is the best
cornerback in the league. And whoever's gonna be opposite of 'em?
Has to you know, hold their own. So I'll I'll
be be doing a great job at that this season.

Speaker 8 (27:17):
Right, he had some adversity so far on defense with
uh j Okay and then.

Speaker 5 (27:23):
Jordan Charly and and now Parks.

Speaker 9 (27:25):
But uh, what do you feel like the is for
your defensive season?

Speaker 2 (27:28):
How how good can you guys be?

Speaker 10 (27:30):
Yeah, we could be as good as we wanna be.
We got some young guys like Carson is amazing. He's
been playing great since day one, so I'm super excited
for him to get an opportunity, you know what I'm saying.
And in my room at least, like we got corners
all around the board. We got a lot of young
guys that have been primed for this moment. Like you said, obviously,

(27:51):
Martin is a guy you you can't replace. Like everything
that he does on the field, it's it's very, very,
very tough to replace. But we got guys that you
know are gonna step up and and make some plays
for us this season.

Speaker 2 (28:01):
Listen, injured guys like Joka and In and Martin, the
guys that aren't gonna be with the team on the field,
how do you guys keep them in the you know,
keep them connected, keep them, you know, feeling like they're
a part of the team when I obviously they obviously naturally,
you know, probably feel a little bit disconnected because of

(28:22):
what they're going through.

Speaker 10 (28:23):
Yeah, I mean speaking with Martin first, Like when I
wasn't here all training camp when I had to you know,
get surgery, he was one of the guys that texted
me every single day to keep me a part of
the team and things like that. And like I said,
it's bigger than football with me and him, like we're brothers.
We talk almost every week during the offseason. We're always facetiming,
not even about football, just about life. So he knows,

(28:45):
he knows how we are. I'll be calling him every
single week he'll be back here and I'll definitely keep him,
you know, keep his spirits up. And like I said,
it's bigger than football with me and him, so I'll
definitely be be talking to him all the time.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
Finally, head coach Kevin Stefan addresses the MJ Emerson injury news.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
Okay, good morning.

Speaker 8 (29:04):
Obviously you guys saw the news with MJ yesterday, so
that's confirmed via MRI. He'll get surgery. He's out for
this season. You know, disappointed. Obviously, injuries are the worst
part about our game. But he will bounce back. I
know what he's made of and I know he's got
our support, he's got his teammates support.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
So but with that, I'll take any questions.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Greg obviously steps up, you know, or continue this kind
of the.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
In that base.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
Stevens is the outside guy, but what's sort of the.

Speaker 8 (29:32):
Mix behind him? If you could just how do you
see that great and need to work through it? I
think that's the thing that we've seen, certainly this season.
Every season you'll have injuries at positions and guys have
to earn roles, and I think that's what training camp
is about, really figuring that out.

Speaker 6 (29:49):
Obviously, Cam Mitchell, I would think would be in that mix.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
What have you seen from him in this couple of years? Yeah,
Cam's always done a nice job. He's productive when he's
out there. I think he's ball aware, very intelligent player,
even though where where to go to college? You remember.

Speaker 5 (30:04):
Who?

Speaker 3 (30:05):
Greg? Oh Gregan. Yeah, Scott's happy a little.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
Bit yesterday with Martin, but he's really determined to have
that bounce back season.

Speaker 8 (30:12):
Yeah, talked about doing I know, Yeah, tough, tough, yeah.
I mean, I don't know, Mary Kay. It's it's hard
any which way. I mean, these guys put so much
into this game physically, mentally, emotionally, and it's an injury
like that, it's just you I don't want to see
any of our players ever in that position. It's just

(30:33):
it's tough, tough to see. Having said that, I know
what this kid's made of. Yesterday was a lot and
and he's sore today and it's gonna be tough. But uh,
I know what he's made of. I did, Yeah, I
talked to him yesterday today.

Speaker 3 (30:48):
Uh yeah, he's he's hurting. I don't thinking this that
he practices. But you know, was he comporting into the
chefs train you know this camp? No, yeah, you don't know.
Uh no, well no, but I'm you know, not gonna
get into all the specifics on that tip.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Stuf Kevin was with the injured players, whether it's Martin
the situation or j okare what you know any of them?

Speaker 3 (31:10):
What?

Speaker 2 (31:11):
How does the team sort of you know, what are
some of the mechanisms some of the things that the
team tries to need to keep them, you know, keep
them involved, keep them, you know, so they don't feel
kind of on an eye.

Speaker 8 (31:22):
Yeah, it's it's it's a good question. It's really it
is hard, and that's part of the sport. Oftentimes when
you get injured, you you have to go get surgery
somewhere else, and then you come back and uh, you know,
whether you're rehabbing here or elsewhere, you're in the training
room and and uh, it's hard. It depends on where
you are and your rehab, whether you can get back
and join meetings, and even that can be hard mentally

(31:44):
for some Some guys really need that and want that
to stay in some some guys it hurts that they're
not a part of it. So you try to just
work with the player circumstantially where they are and what
they need. But MJ is a big part of this
football team. Whether he's out in the field or not,
he's a big part of this football.

Speaker 5 (32:00):
Curio's just today with Daviell and to do it.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
Yea, how do you think the rupi's handled that situation? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (32:06):
I thought it was two really good two minute situations, Tony.
The first one was need a field goal, second one
was need a touchdown. Obviously the distances were different on
both the time was different on both but that's really
the first time to work those mechanics for our football team.
And I thought the guys that did a nice job.
That may Day field goal was not planned.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
That just happened.

Speaker 8 (32:27):
And you know, I give credit to Bubba and the
entire group and having the awareness that that was coming.
So we talked a lot of times as a team
that we have to have shared situational awareness.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
We can't just have one coach or one player. Everybody
has to be on top of it.

Speaker 8 (32:41):
So Bubba did what he supposed to do, made a
may Day field goal alert before that play, and it
ended up being a sack and we executed the player.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
It wasn't their day to kick. They kicked the day before.

Speaker 5 (32:52):
Kevin, can you talk about like before you even get started,
three key defensive players you don't.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
Have their year with j Oka x now jer you're
doing that. Yeah, Listen.

Speaker 8 (33:04):
Like I've said before, I don't want to lose any
of our guys for any reason, but it's the nature
of our game is that guys get injured and and
then it's an opportunity for other guys to step up.
And that's we've seen that over the course of time.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (33:20):
Again, don't like any part of injuries, for for.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
This team, for any team. We we don't.

Speaker 8 (33:26):
We don't like this part of the game, but it's
the reality of the game and we have to have
guys to step up that.

Speaker 6 (33:33):
Kenny, or you're evaluated towards the end of the week,
Is it's something that you.

Speaker 8 (33:36):
Guys, Is any chance, I would say, Mary kay with Kenny,
with any player, you're really getting evaluated every day as
you rehab and where you are. So with all of
our injured players. With tomorrow being a nonpractice day, although
we'll work, that'll be a day to look at where
everybody is and and and and and make a decision.

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Went up appropriate on all of our players, Kenny included Lagers.
I know earlier in the offense can work on Urgram.

Speaker 10 (34:04):
You guy said that you need almost playing safety, but
he has a lot of experience in that one.

Speaker 3 (34:08):
MG injuries or anything that they are going to try
a little bit more of love. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (34:12):
I think all those things, Daniel are things that we're
gonna work through, not just.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Today but in the near future as well. Hey, you
having specifically, what do you like about the guilds? You know?

Speaker 8 (34:22):
Uh, yeah, First of all, he's uh, he's very mature,
even though for his age, I don't think he's yet
twenty one. I think he's our only player that's not
yet twenty one. But he's very mature, very intelligent. And
then he's a productive player when the ball's in his hands.
He turned on the tape. He's making plays in a
really good conference as well. So like where he is

(34:43):
another player that we're seeing what he can do, see
what he's capable of, but really has the right makeup.

Speaker 5 (34:49):
Kevin is sure hasn't gotten any reps with the ones.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
You know he's getting some of the twos. Now, what
is it fair to say as.

Speaker 5 (34:56):
You're trying to get his quarterback situation narrowed down here
getting Gigi burning camp and he hasn't gotten reps now
if you probably won't get it.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
For any years.

Speaker 8 (35:05):
Yeah, I'm not gonna get in specifics on the players
and you know where they're getting reps those type of things.
He's working extremely hard, like all those guys are. You know,
we're still not yet through the installation schedule. We're still
just introducing two minutes yesterday. We'll introduce some different distances today.
Situationally so I wouldn't really think much past that.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
What's a comfort level with Jerome Ford?

Speaker 6 (35:30):
And how nice is that to have when you have
the uncertainty with the quick chances.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
You know, Jerome has really played well for us.

Speaker 8 (35:37):
He's a guy that has the home run ability at
any moment's notice with his speed. I think he's gotten
better over the course of his career in a bunch
of different areas and including blitz pick up the past game,
those type of things. So glad that he's getting healthier
and then we're gonna start get seeing more and more
of him in practice. But he's a guy that we've
won with, that we've played well with, so we have
a lot of confidence in drome.

Speaker 3 (35:58):
You haven't run in receivers and running back say no,
think always he's just the thought class season. Uh yeah,
I think you want to.

Speaker 8 (36:06):
It's part conditioning, you know, get there's a lot that
goes into but number one, we're in training camps. We
want to acclimate our bodies to getting ready for a season.
I think there's a lot of communication that has to
take place when you're going in and out of the huddle,
and that's the premium if you want to operate successfully
and officially. As in offenses, you have to know who's
in and who's out. So really training those guys to

(36:27):
be very communicative when they're coming on and off the field.
You'll see we'll put the offense and the defense on
the sideline as opposed to just putting the offense behind
because it's just too easy for them to step in
the huddle. So just trying to mimic the game and
get their bodies and their minds ready for the seasons.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
Those he's excused for personal, but he'll he'll be back soon.

Speaker 6 (36:48):
I know you've been dealing with it since you got here,
But Miles Garrett, you know it seems like you could
just destroy practices ready to good day.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Yesterday's always in the backfield. Do you have to man
when you talk to guys going on but the manage? Yeah, Well,
Miles Garrett's least favorite.

Speaker 8 (37:07):
Moments is in practice when I don't call a sack
because we're in a two minute and if you're always
gonna call sack with Miles, you won't get much work
in that two minutes.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
So he did.

Speaker 8 (37:15):
I did call one sack there when we got the
may Day field goal, Like Tony was mentioned earlier, but
there are gonna be times.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
Where you let them play because we need to see it.

Speaker 8 (37:23):
So Miles I've seen in practice settings versus really good tackles.
When we practice against other teams, I've seen him ruin
the day for other teams. So I really appreciate that
when that happens.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
But in the.

Speaker 8 (37:34):
Meantime, it's Browns versus Browns. You just hope that I
know this.

Speaker 3 (37:39):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (37:39):
Great players make other players great by how they practice hard,
and Miles is making our team great with how he practices.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
Uh. And then when we go against other teams, he
gets to ruin their day.

Speaker 5 (37:50):
How do you think Dewan is handling that challenge so far?

Speaker 3 (37:53):
Yeah, it's it is a challenge, and I think he's
doing a nice job.

Speaker 8 (37:56):
Obviously, Dewan playing left tackle rehabit off of an injury,
going against Miles every day, that will only make you better.

Speaker 3 (38:04):
There's gonna be, absolutely there's gonna be ups and downs.

Speaker 8 (38:06):
But I'd ask you to remember back to some of
the teams we've practiced over the years and some really
good tackles that we've practiced over the years that it's
hard to block Miles period. And it's hard to block
them into practice setting, game setting, you name it. So
when you when you battle, you have your wins, you
have your losses. I think it only makes you better.

Speaker 6 (38:22):
And we noticed that Devinevin feels more comfortable there this
year at left.

Speaker 11 (38:27):
Hat for the day.

Speaker 8 (38:28):
I think time on tasks certainly you get more comfortable, Jeff,
and I think that just only grows with each day.
Where does your plot three start Monday? Yeah, players are
off Sunday. We'll start Monday and then we travel, I
believe to Charlotte on Tuesday.

Speaker 7 (38:45):
Did you get everything you wanted to plot to?

Speaker 3 (38:48):
Well, we're not done just yet.

Speaker 8 (38:50):
So we still got today, Tomorrow, the next Friday, Saturday.

Speaker 3 (38:54):
We'll be in pads all these days. Mary kay. So
this is a big part of part of train camp.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
When when on draft page when Jet Judkins restricted, it's
use of the word bella koal mean or course.

Speaker 10 (39:07):
Got yeah with him not in there to be back
to committee approach at running back, I.

Speaker 8 (39:11):
Think that's probably premature for me to say anything. You
know what it's gonna be like, It's it's hard to
say at this point, Tony. So just based on who's
available to us, that's how.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
We'll construct the uh the plan.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
What did you like about the the the new running
back signed uh earlier this week?

Speaker 8 (39:27):
Yeah, uh, guy who's been in different situations. We know
he's intelligent, tough runner. Uh so just knew that he's
another guy out of the mix.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
How do you feel about Fantay Johnson so far? You feel? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (39:41):
I think like d Deonte, you know, is like anybody else.
He's he's doing a nice job of picking things up
and and trying to stack every single day. He's got
the right attitude. So just getting better every day, I think,
is uh has been evident?

Speaker 3 (39:52):
Does anybody return to practice that hadn't?

Speaker 8 (39:55):
I got probably, but I don't know off the top
of my head.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Mike Woods, Uh no, they won't be back out there?
Yea that that group?

Speaker 5 (40:08):
Okay for Luke Floria to tail try out God and
the tryout think this object to But what is.

Speaker 3 (40:15):
The skill said that wanted you to? They've made you
guys want this extended? Well?

Speaker 8 (40:19):
I call him Rambo because he wears that bandana across
his head. So apparently his high school coach called him
Rambo two, So I'm onto something.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
He's he's a local kid.

Speaker 8 (40:31):
He's doing a nice job putting him in there at
different spots, he continues to show up. You know, I
appreciate about this rookie class just in general. Uh, They're
they're working extremely hard. They're doing what we're asking them
to do. And you know the biggest thing for me
is when you're evaluating these guys, is putting them in
some positions and see how they respond.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
I think he's responded really well.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
