Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to a loaded week seventeen Thursday edition of From
the Podium. I'm Gabe Klea. We at the Browns hope
you and your families are all having a very happy
holiday season. The Browns will take on the Miami Dolphins
this coming Sunday. On this episode, you'll hear from defensive
coordinator Jim Schwartz, offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, special teams coordinator
Bubba Van Trone, cornerback Denzel Ward, safety Grant Delpit, quarterback
(00:29):
Dorian Thompson Robinson, wide receiver Jerry Judy, and offensive guard
Joel Betonio. We'll start with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz today,
who took questions on how to combat the speed of
the Miami Dolphins offense.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
When you look at the Dolphins pass and offense, maybe
not as many explosive down throwd passes you know, years past.
Do you think that's a product of change in you know,
philosophies for them are Marcel teams just making sure Tyreek
and Jalen water Uncle lose.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
You know, I don't want to comment on how you
know what their strategy or whatever it is, but they
do have speed and explosive players. You know, it all
sort of works together and ties into what they feel
the quarterback can accomplish the best, and how it matches
their personnel. We've had some teams this year where we
faced you know, six foot four, six foot you know,
(01:22):
like every wide receiver was six foot four and contested catches.
It really wasn't a matter of match and speed. It
was a matter of match and size. This is a
little bit different on the outside part of the field
because every single one of their guys is like five eight,
five nine and all run four three running backs wide receivers,
you know, so it's a little different challenge. It's a
(01:43):
match in the speed as opposed to matching as opposed
to matching the physicality and the size on the outside
part of the field.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
You know. So it's each week it's it's a little
different challenge.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
They have a lot of guys that you know, sort
of blur the lines of what they are wide receiver,
slash running back, you know, full back, slash tight end,
tight end slash full back. You know, very similar to
some of the stuff we saw from San Francisco, and
you know, sort of a trend in the NFL now
is sort of blur the lines and eleven can be
(02:18):
twelve and twelve can be eleven.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
I have been impressed.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
All their wide receivers are block even though you know,
not a lot of big guys out there, including Tyreek Hill.
They'll block in the run game, they'll chip in pass protection,
you know. But the biggest thing this week is just
it's just being able to handle a speed because they
threaten all fifty fifty three and the third with the
speed in their team.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
When the team goes to a shorter passing game like
they have with that speed, does it put the absolute
premium on tackling.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, one hundred percent. One hundred percent, and you know
so much stuff. I mean, I think h On has
like his past target depth overall is behind the line
of scrimmage, you know. So obviously they're getting the ball
to them on short passes. You know, their screen game
a lot of different ways just to get the ball
(03:12):
and play maker's hands, whether or wide receiver screens, running
back screens, even tight end screens for run after the catch.
And when you're a team that relies on run after
the catch, it certainly puts an emphasis on tackling angles
and pursuit.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
Is miles hand. Okay, and what did you think about that,
you know, chasing down Joe on that sideline.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Yeah, I actually didn't think that was his best effort
play of the game. He had another one on their
sideline where he was he was really running to the ball.
He has that kind of speed to be able to
do it. A lot of guys like to chase those
quarterbacks because if they can get him as a sack,
right if the guy goes out of bounds and you're
closest to him, so that's you know, But but when
(03:58):
when you're running for a running back that's fifteen yards
down the field, that's you know, that's truly you know,
a little different attitude when it comes to it. And
you know, still sees double teams all the time. We
haven't been good enough winning our one on ones when
teams choose to play us that way.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
But he's still been able to be effective, you know.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I mean, you look across the across the line at
his stats, as pressure rate is down tiny bit from
last year, but like tackles for losses and sacks and
quarterback hits and all that stuff, he's he's on pace
to either match what he did last year or even
(04:43):
or even outdo it.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
So you know, that's sort of a testament.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Like like I've said a bunch of times, when when
people start their game plan with we're not gonna let
this guy record game and their story able to have effectiveness,
I think that's the sign of a great player.
Speaker 7 (04:59):
And when we him about you know, the individual accomplishments,
including the hundredth stack.
Speaker 8 (05:03):
You know, he's mentioned it's you know.
Speaker 7 (05:05):
Kind of tainted by not getting as many wins this year,
and he's alluded to, you know, being frustrated with that
multiple times. Just how have you seen him handle that
this season and how he's you know kind.
Speaker 9 (05:17):
Of worked through that.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah, I mean his performance has stayed consistent, you know,
I think I think it's a it's a tough situation.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
It's it's easy to.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Prepare, it's easy to practice, it's easy to play this
time of year when the stakes are high, right, I mean.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
It's just it's just is what it is.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
But it it puts a different you know, just puts
a different lens on it. When you know you're you're
you're playing because you're you're paid to play and you're
a professional and you've got a game on the schedule
and all those and you have to have you have
to find your motivation a lot of different ways. And
you know, he's been able to keep that stuff up.
(05:58):
And it's been a dis season for all of us,
you know, but we're still professionals and we're still paid
to play and coach, and we expect to finish strong.
Speaker 10 (06:11):
Do you understand when he comes out and talks about
not wanting to go through a rebuild and at this
stage in his career how important it is for him
to win a year and have a chance whinevery year.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, I'll let him speak for himself on that stuff.
I mean, my eyes more on Miami Dolphins and what
we can do to stop them and not worrying so
much about what's next year and you know, things like that.
So I'll let him come in on those kind of things,
and I'll try to stay at my lane and keep
(06:42):
it keep it what we have this week, and try
to keep my focus there and try to keep our
players focused there.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
How about the fact that he, though, has really set
the tone. I remember when you first came in, you
said you wanted your best leaders on the team to
be your best players and he's really verbalized it and
then followed through on the bield to set the tone
for that effort and playing hard all the way to gain.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, for us to be successful, we need our best
players to play the best and also we need our
best players to also set the best example. You know,
I still think there's there's things we can do better
that way over the course of the season, you know, so,
but you know, just just the ability to persevere through
(07:28):
some things. He was injured early in the season. You know,
a lot of different things come up. We haven't played
with a lot of leads, which you know obviously affects
you know, a guy that's a pass rusher and things
like that. But we'll concentrate on finishing strong and and
being proud about what we do over the last two games.
Speaker 9 (07:50):
Good to see.
Speaker 11 (07:52):
What you claim.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
So that you got all that speed on the outside,
and then you got Johnny.
Speaker 9 (07:58):
Smith in the middle of the field. So what challenge
is that.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, I mean he's got speed too. You know, he
blurs a lot of lines. He's like a big wide
receiver or a small tight end. You know, they'll use
him as blocker, particularly on third down, but they get
the ball in his hands, he's really good run after
the catch. You know, they've they you can tell they've
intentionally built their team around speed. And probably one of
(08:27):
the biggest tails of the tape this week, Tony is
is going to be how well our D line is
able to redirect on perimeter plays, how well they're going
to be able to retrace on some of the middle screens.
And you know, like usually if you're a you know,
a B gap defensive tackle, your B gap is like
from the guard to the tackle.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
The way these.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Guys play, they make you defend from the guard all
the way to the sideline, you know, so it really
puts an emphasis on your you know, forcing your D
line to be athletes. And that's probably our biggest, our
biggest challenge this week is, you know, you have to
play it a lot of different ways and be multi
(09:09):
dimensional whatever whatever the word is. But not only they
have to defend the B gap. They're gonna to defend
that begap all the way to the sideline, and they're
gonna have to be able to chase on some of
these quick parameter screens, which, when it's all said and done,
really aren't a whole lot different than a than a
toss play, right, they're just getting the line out in
front relocate in the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
So we're gonna have to relocate.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
The defensive line on a lot of those and if
we're if we're limiting those things you had mentioned, you know,
tackling and you know, those kind of things. But having
that d lines pursuit inside out and being available as
an extra layer is a necessity this week. It's not
it's not a bonus. It's a necessity just based on
the way that they play. So, you know, I think
(09:53):
our ability to play well on defense is going to
be is going to be determined in a large part
by our D line's ability to fly and out, make
prim perimeter plays, turn and run and make tackles on
short passes. Ball is going to be coming out fast,
you know, so there's a lot of things they can
do to help that effort.
Speaker 10 (10:11):
You Lemann had splash splash plays against the Bengals. Overall,
how do you like Isaiah and Mike and I Juwan.
How do you think they've played, Is they've gotten.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
More and more playing.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Yeah, you know me, they've all played about our record,
you know, but they're all young players and they're they're
you know, having having some success. They're still working to
be consistent and those kinds of things. But we're excited
about all those guys.
Speaker 7 (10:39):
Isaiah specifically with three horse bumbles this year.
Speaker 8 (10:42):
What is it about him that he's been able to
knock the ball out?
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Yeah, he has He has just sort of a knack
for being around the ball, and he's got long arms.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
You know, some some guys have a knack for it.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Hopefully that's that's one of the you know, one of
the things that that he can bring to us.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey discussed the play of quarterback Dory
and Thompson Robinson.
Speaker 12 (11:10):
I think I think, you know, Dorry made a lot
of good plays, and there was a lot of you know,
you see some of the physical traits. But you know,
I think there's there's definitely some things we can improve on.
You know, we we missed a couple of things, uh,
just from a ball placement standpoint that I think we
could get better at. And then obviously, you know, some
of the turnovers we gotta we gotta we have to
(11:30):
get corrected, you know, and that's something that we're gonna
continue to harp on and and uh and emphasize just
to make sure we you know, we gotta continually focus
to get those things corrected.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
You think you could call a game where the pass
run ratio.
Speaker 11 (11:46):
Is on sid.
Speaker 12 (11:49):
I mean, we're we're always looking to you know, state state,
you know, keep a defense off balance, whether it's you know,
run the ball, throwing the ball. You know. The more
the more I think, you know, you're you don't get
into having to be in a two minute mode at
the end of the game. That's going to help that.
And I think, uh, you know we're going to continue
to work for that.
Speaker 9 (12:08):
Are you prevent for Dorian to be the quarterback?
Speaker 13 (12:10):
Senday?
Speaker 12 (12:11):
Yeah, as of right now, I would say, you know,
Dorian's healthy, He's going to be our our our starter,
you know, for for this week, and we'll move forward
to with that mindset and with him.
Speaker 10 (12:23):
How can you kind of help the protection? It felt like,
you know, obviously it's like five sacks, but he's you know,
he's running around a lot back there, Like, do you
think he can be done some stuff to help the
protection better?
Speaker 11 (12:33):
Well?
Speaker 12 (12:33):
I think you know, when you talk protection, it takes everybody,
you know, and I think definitely the quarterbacks are part
of that you know, so there's plays where a guy
like him, you know, extended some plays and and made
some big plays with his feet and and got the
pocket and did some good things. So there's definitely a
balancing act you have to have when you have the
physical abilities that that Dorian haves. So you know, we
(12:56):
want to we want to make sure that uh uh,
we're we're doing our best to not put ourselves in
situations where we're behind the chains by taking sacks and
things like that. So you know, the biggest the biggest
thing for us is, yeah, con Tilly, focus on, Hey,
there's a time and a place to to try to
extend plays and and worst case scenario, if we got
to throw the ball away, let's do it and and
and live to fight the next down and not put
(13:18):
us behind the chains.
Speaker 14 (13:19):
And what's the challenge of trying to develop a young
quarterback in live games?
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Uh?
Speaker 12 (13:25):
Look, I think at the when you when you look
at Dorian, you know this is his second year, but
you know, uh, still not a ton of starts under
his belt to your point, So I think there's there's
definitely a learning curve and and we'll continue to to
develop that. You know, you want to give him opportunities
(13:45):
to be successful in the past game so he feels confident.
So I think that's where you know, a balance of
of what you're doing to make sure you're you're giving
him some premier looks to throw the ball on first
and second down well at the same time being able
to run the ball in those situations too. So I
think that balance of being able to do both, so
it's not you know, run, run and then throw it
on the hardest down to throw it on, you know,
(14:07):
So we got to continually work for that for that
balance to so that he can he can see good
looks and and we can you know, skip some third
downs on offense and and uh and and move the ball.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
Do you see enough of those physical traits that lead
you to believe that if you guys keep honing it
and coaching it up and all of that, that he
has a good future as a starter in the NFL.
Speaker 12 (14:34):
You know, I think right now I'd love to be
able to answer the gudge is so focused on on
what we're trying to accomplish right now. I think that
all quarterbacks improve as they get you know, into the
league and they get reps and they get game reps,
and I think Dorian's going to continue to grow as
a player with every single Repee gets. And where that
(14:55):
leads in the future, you know, is to be determined.
But you know, hopefully right now his Folkcus and and
all of our focuses is really on winning this game.
Speaker 7 (15:03):
Is he been working with Jamis and what's the exchangement
between those two?
Speaker 12 (15:07):
Yeah, they've been great. I mean that room is is
a very good room from a working together standpoint, and
and uh, you know, uh see, you know, talking through
what what each other sees and and Jamis has been
great with that with him. Uh, Jamis is a is
a true pro and and you know, I really appreciate
(15:28):
him being in the room from from day one when
when Deshaun was starting to when he took over to
till now. I mean, he's been a pro throughout everything,
and I got a ton of respect for the way
he handles himself. And I think, uh that that room
in general has been really good in terms of that
communication and and and trying to help each other be successful.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
Does it look like Jamis will still be there.
Speaker 11 (15:50):
In this game.
Speaker 12 (15:51):
We're still uh kind of evaluing that as the week goes,
you know, from a from a health standpoint, and you know,
see where he's at as the week go on.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
Here, if Bailey has to get in the game, what
leads you to believe that that Bailey can function well?
Speaker 12 (16:05):
And yeah, I mean he's been here for a little
while now, so I think, you know, he's got a
grasp of the offense. Obviously, you know, there's seeing to
be things that we do with him that we wouldn't
you know, or we do with Dorian that we wouldn't
do with him, and whatnot if he did have to
get in there. But uh, you know, and you talk
to him and see, okay, what what do you what
(16:26):
do you feel most comfortable with and and things like that.
But I think he's been here long enough to where
it's you don't have to minimize the game plan too much.
And and he's got some really good experience as a
as a starter in this league as well, so he's
seen football and and uh feel confident that if he
had to step into to execute, he can he can
do that some.
Speaker 10 (16:45):
Of it at the beginning of the season. But how
big is an adjustment for the run game when you
have all of a sudden the quarterback run option and
some of those read option looks at resolve with Doan.
Speaker 12 (16:54):
Yeah, I mean, and obviously did a little bit of
it with with Jamis, but not to the level that
you know you can do with with Dorian and and
his skill set. So you know, we want to we
want to do that, and we want to be able
to to mix that in. You don't want to have
to that be the sole thing. You want to be
able to take some things off his plate as well, uh,
to where he could have some breather plays in the
(17:14):
run game and whatnot as well, and not not put
too many hits on him and and things like that.
But I think you could utilize his skill set in
a way that a defense has to account for him.
Uh and hopefully they have to account for him whether
you're doing that stuff or you're not doing that stuff,
you know, and and you can make it look like
you're you're reading it or and not reading it. So uh,
(17:35):
I think that's that's something that that you could utilize
with with a guy like Dorian and his skill set,
because I think that a defense has to account for
his playmaking ability with his feet.
Speaker 7 (17:45):
Can when you look at the Dolphins defense, what stands
out just for you guys.
Speaker 14 (17:49):
As you head into this game.
Speaker 12 (17:50):
I think one, obviously they've got an elite corner, uh
with with Ramsey out there, He's big, physical, move him around,
does a lot of different things. And then I got
a ton of just really good players out there that
play hard, play at an extremely high level, you know,
and and play well together. They do a great job
up front creating pressure through through different looks, whether it's
(18:15):
Blake's patches, games up front things like that. It's just
they they really change the picture on you a lot.
And uh, they're not gonna sit there in one or
two coverages. They're gonna they're gonna change the coverage picture, Uh,
change the pressure looks. So they give you some variety.
But there's not a lot of busts. There's not a
lot of guys running free. So they do it in
a responsible way that that they can handle, and and
(18:37):
they do it at a pretty high level.
Speaker 6 (18:40):
About David, do you expect that that Dorian might have
David available to him knowing that he suffered knee injury
in this game.
Speaker 12 (18:51):
Yeah, I think that's something we're we're taking day by day,
week by week and kind of see how how the
week goes right here and and uh and everything. So
I think that's that's something that's just going to constantly
be evaluated to see where David at as as he's
going through that.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
How you know, how helpful was it to you guys
that he got out there and was able to do
what he could do when he probably could have used
maybe another week off.
Speaker 12 (19:15):
No, I mean, obviously Dave's an extremely tough human being
and a great competitor. You wanted to be out there
for his for his teammates, and you know, do what
he can to help us, you know, in that game
and clearly provide us a really good spark in that game.
So you know, obviously he's, uh, he's a guy who's
going to battle through things and and constantly you know,
(19:37):
push himself to help us in whatever way he can.
And uh, definitely, I know his teammates and and his
coaches were appreciative for him to be out there and
doing what he did.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
When you look back at the Bengals game, only three
targets for Judy when you look back at it, we
respecting the Cincinnati defense too much.
Speaker 12 (19:55):
I think every game is different, you know, every game
plays out differently in terms of what a defense is
doing and how it unfolds. So you know, I think
that's that's always the case. And and uh, you know,
work work JJ is a big part of our our offense,
and we always want to try to incorporate as much
as we can, and and uh, we'll continue to look
(20:16):
for to do that as as weeks go on.
Speaker 11 (20:18):
We've seen the two really.
Speaker 10 (20:19):
Long runs from Jerome the last couple of games. What
do you see for him like kind of playing playoff
bases and especially now as he moves into that number
one role with nickout.
Speaker 12 (20:28):
Yeah, obviously he's an explosive player. He's got a good
ability to run explosive and run it physically, you know,
and and get some tough yards as well. Uh So
I just I do think that, uh he provides, you know,
some some really good things for our offense. And he's
an experienced player who's you know, obviously got a lot
of snaps under his belt. So you know, he's got
(20:49):
some good feel for you know, making those cuts, the
burst through the hole, you know, and and making guys
miss with this with his quickness and his strength. So uh,
you know, we we got.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
Got excuse me.
Speaker 12 (21:00):
We got to continue to utilize him and take advantage
of him as as much as possible, because he's a
he's a player that when you get the ball in
his hands, he could he could do some great things
for you from a big play standpoint.
Speaker 11 (21:14):
What does it say about him?
Speaker 14 (21:15):
I mean, he goes from kind of being the lead
guy early then takes a little bit of a backseat
to Nick come back.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
As the lead guy. Never flinched or anything like that.
Speaker 8 (21:21):
What does it say about kind of his approach.
Speaker 12 (21:23):
He's a I mean a great teammate, you know. And
and he's a professional. You know, he's always ready for
whenever his number is called. Uh he's big for us
in the protection game and the run game, and the
screen game and the pass game. So he's a pro,
you know. And and uh, and he just does a
great job being ready whenever whenever his opportunities arise. And
I think you've seen that throughout the year how.
Speaker 6 (21:45):
He said coming along just seems like it's been quite
a while to come.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Back with this concussion.
Speaker 12 (21:51):
Yeah, I mean that's again, that's a it's a day
by day thing that I know he's doing everything he
can to get back and and uh, and all that,
and obviously he's working closely with the Bathle like staff,
but it's a it's a day by day thing that
you know, will continue to kind of work through as
as hopefully time goes here.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone talked about how the Dolphins
use their weapons in the return game.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
So, can you just maybe address the kicking situation and
what the outlook is is like getting into this game.
Speaker 15 (22:23):
Yeah, we're I mean, like coach coach kind of hit
on it in his in his media thing. We're we're
working through it and he's working through it. So we
feel we have a lot of confidence in him to
get it right and we think that, you know, this
is the best thing and just to just for him
(22:44):
to be able to work through it.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
So, so why didn't be a kicker a practice squad?
Speaker 6 (22:49):
Then?
Speaker 4 (22:50):
I'm sorry, why did.
Speaker 9 (22:51):
You bring in a kicker on the practice squad?
Speaker 4 (22:53):
I think it's just an option, It's an option to have. Yeah,
what was he liked about him? I'm sorry?
Speaker 9 (22:58):
What was he liked about Honor?
Speaker 4 (23:01):
Well, he had it.
Speaker 15 (23:02):
We so he was at the workout whenever we before
we signed, Riley had a good workout.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
Was accurate.
Speaker 15 (23:10):
Uh, Obviously a younger kid has a has a good leg,
so and it's we're like, oh, go ahead.
Speaker 7 (23:16):
And are sure where is dustin act like physically eventually,
cause when you talked after the game, you mentioned like
feeling like he had the swing thought.
Speaker 9 (23:24):
Down and then feeling like he he.
Speaker 7 (23:26):
Lost it throughout the week and then didn't have it
going into the game.
Speaker 9 (23:29):
So it just were a step pap right now.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Yeah, I thought he.
Speaker 15 (23:32):
I thought he hit the ball pretty decent during the week,
you know, missed a couple of kicks, which which happens,
and I felt like the pregame warment was solid. Obviously
we had one opportunity in the game and he missed
the pat So now I think he I think he's
just trying to figure it out, honestly, might be there.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
So might there be some sentiment for letting him work
through this, you know, in these last two games, just
you know, not having to get kick in a game
and then work it through over the offseason. He come
back nice and strong.
Speaker 15 (24:05):
You're saying to not kick him in the next two
I mean, yeah, I mean that's obviously an option. Coach
held him out of the out of the game prior
to the Cincinnati game. I think that we'll just make
a decision at the end of the week and figure
out what we think is best for him and our team.
And I will say this, like there's times where guys
(24:27):
you know, have like a little hiccup in in their process,
whatever you want to call it. I mean, even like
the best in the game, you know, Justin Tucker had one,
you know, in the middle of the season, and he's
hit the ball.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
Really well the last two or three weeks. So look,
we have confidence.
Speaker 15 (24:46):
He's a veteran Dustin and we feel like he's going
to be able to figure it out.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
So I want to look at this like a tryout
for Schmidt for two weeks, even if he doesn't.
Speaker 10 (24:58):
Kick in the games.
Speaker 15 (24:59):
I think it's always good to be able to get
eyes on a younger player, regardless of what position it's.
Speaker 11 (25:03):
At, you know.
Speaker 15 (25:04):
I think that you know, specifically for you know, specialists,
in general, it most times takes those guys longer to
be able to establish themselves or to get an opportunity.
So I think that it's just it's always good to
be able to put eyes on it on a young player,
whether it's a you know, defensive, offensive or special or
(25:25):
special teams guy.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
So I think it's I think it's a good thing
for us to be able to do that.
Speaker 10 (25:30):
Well, I don't think we talked to you since the
there's a fair catch, free take thing. Yeah, is that
something you guys think about often even before.
Speaker 11 (25:39):
You saw that.
Speaker 9 (25:40):
And yeah, we talked through that situation.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
We don't hit it every week.
Speaker 15 (25:43):
We hit it every every few weeks just to remind
our players how we would handle that the lot. I
actually I took part in one of those with with
Harbaugh as my coach. In twenty thirteen, we played at
and I think people have written about that. We played
at Saint Louis. I want to say it was a
(26:04):
Thursday night game and piled. Ironically, Phil Dawson was the
guy that attempted to kick it was like a I
want to say, it was a seventy or seventy one
yard attempt. So he mishit the ball and then it
ends up playing out just like a regular kickoff would,
So we had to cover it like a kickoff. And
I would say, you know, in that situation, there they
(26:26):
get the fifteen yard penalty, so now the ball is
at the plus whatever it was, it ends up being
a fifty seven yard field goal, so he can just
take a normal field goal approach with no Russian Obviously,
that's a you know, they execute the play well.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
The situations got to be where the punter is backed
up for that even happened. But would you do that
only at the end of a half or would you
do that at any time game?
Speaker 15 (26:52):
You could do it, You can do it anytime in
the game, but I would say it's probably less advantage
just to do it earlier in the game when you're
trying to score touchdowns and you're trying to move the
ball down the field, and you know you're trying to
get even a field goal closer than a fifty seven
yard kick. We actually had a situation when I was
(27:13):
an assistant in New England. It was at the end
of regulation against Atlanta and the Super Bowl, and Bill
came down and asked us if if we would be
able to attempt to kick from there and Steve and
Steve said no, Guskowski, but it was it was like
a jeez, it had to be like a seventy three
yard field goal maybe at that point, because then you
(27:33):
then now you have to cover like a kickoff and
depending on who that returner is, so.
Speaker 10 (27:41):
They might still use Tyreek at all in the return games. Like,
is that something you had to be prepared for.
Speaker 4 (27:46):
Yeah, they have used him.
Speaker 15 (27:49):
We'll always We're always going to prepare for every possible situation,
every possible returner that's on the roster every week, so
our guys will always be prepared for whoever we have
to cover against.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
Someone putting Denzel Uh back there after after the time out,
did you think about putting him out there or.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
Initially or so?
Speaker 15 (28:08):
And initially it looked like they were gonna punt the
ball and then they came back with the field goal unit,
so then that's why we ended up. That's why we
ended up putting him back there. And in the event
that the ball were to be short, Kate hit a
good ball there. Gonna give him credit and you know,
did a nice job.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
And how nice is it that Uh Jerome has really
found his you know, return footing as you.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Guys, Yeah, nah, he's Jerome's done a good job.
Speaker 15 (28:39):
And like I talked about in one of the in
the previous uh interviews or whatever, he's the best thing
about having a guy like that is they're willing to
do it and willing to do whatever it takes for
the team. He's our starting running back right now, and
and he's been our kick returner, so uh, and I
think that that's it's a it's also a good, you
(28:59):
know form of leleadership, you know, willing to do whatever
it takes for the team, and no matter what role
you're in, whether it's the starting returner or playing in
you know, multiple phases as a starter on special teams.
So I think that I think that that's, uh, that
goes a long way.
Speaker 16 (29:15):
Yeah, and then you guys are heading into your final
home game knowing how just important this team is to
Browns fans.
Speaker 6 (29:25):
How do you how important is it to just kind
of finish strong.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
At home crowd? Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 15 (29:31):
We we're gonna We've put everything we have into into
every week, into every game plan, in every practice, our players,
our effort has been I think our effort has been
really good. Our execution in all three phases has not
been to our standard, and hopefully we can put a
good product out there the next two weeks. We're going
(29:52):
against two really good football teams that are still obviously
Miami's still in the playoff hunt and the next week,
obviously we got another division game. So our focus is
doing everything we can to win to win the game
this week, So keep our make our fans problem.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Our first player today is Denzel Ward, who touched on
facing a receiver like Tyreek Hill.
Speaker 17 (30:14):
Oh yeah, you got you gotta put some book book our.
Speaker 11 (30:16):
Gear on.
Speaker 17 (30:21):
See a lot of.
Speaker 11 (30:24):
Oh yeah, no question.
Speaker 17 (30:25):
They definitely got a lot of speed, a lot of
talented guys out there every everywhere running back position, receiver position.
So you definitely bring a different challenge to us that
we gotta face.
Speaker 8 (30:35):
How much pressure does that they present put on you
guys is the secondary.
Speaker 18 (30:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (30:42):
They do a good job of getting their guys the
ball quick and letting them make plays in space and
uh try to get out of their fast So we
definitely got to do our best to eliminate that as
best as we can and make plays out there. Yeah,
he's still a great player, still a great player, fast player,
(31:02):
and I say, you good, get the ball.
Speaker 11 (31:03):
In his hands.
Speaker 17 (31:04):
He good, He's dangerous. So I said, we gotta try
to find a way to eliminate that and do it
the best we can.
Speaker 9 (31:11):
Implored figure to cover.
Speaker 17 (31:14):
Yeah, uh yeah, it don't mattered me, But yeah, it's
it's definitely a different challenge with guys being taller or shorter.
Uh So it's definitely a different thing when facing those
jump balls or fifty fifty balls like that. So definitely
presents a different challenge.
Speaker 14 (31:31):
It feels like this is one game where you wanted
to be thirty degrees outside because of you know, Miami
and their reputation not playing ball in the colen So
we're a little disappointed when he saw that forecast.
Speaker 17 (31:42):
Someday Nah, nah, it don't matter to me. I'll play
any conditions. So I'm just looking forward to get into
the game and trying to find a way to get
a win.
Speaker 7 (31:50):
Watching whetting the Bengals.
Speaker 11 (31:53):
Last week, you have to say started, you know, we.
Speaker 7 (32:01):
Opposing teams are trying to figure out how to neutralize people.
Speaker 17 (32:04):
Uh yeah, it's it's much respect. Uh, I got a
lot of respect for those guys over there. Just trying
to do our best we can to be those playmakers
out there on the field.
Speaker 11 (32:12):
Uh where you.
Speaker 17 (32:13):
Gotta uh try to defend against her scheme up to
try to eliminate us. So just tryna be those guys
out there on the field.
Speaker 11 (32:21):
For our team.
Speaker 17 (32:22):
Uh, and they did a good job obviously last week
and getting to win. So yeah, just tryna be that
guy out there I could get ready for.
Speaker 10 (32:28):
The shot and plays that Miami can take, especially the
guy tyre versus knowing that they throwing off particular.
Speaker 17 (32:35):
Uh yeah, I mean it was really just doing our
job and executing our assignment. So uh knowing that and
just being alert of it, but just executing our assignment
and uh that should put us in position to uh
make those plays.
Speaker 9 (32:46):
Kids a last week, Mile Spears do any more rebuilding.
He's ready to weigh.
Speaker 11 (32:51):
Any once you know what the team for this season.
Speaker 9 (32:54):
Oh you came in just a year after him, the
same very interesting respect.
Speaker 17 (33:03):
Yeah, oh yeah, I'm I'm I'm ready to win as well.
So I'm ready to win as well. I know Miles
is too.
Speaker 12 (33:07):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (33:07):
We we competitors and and winners, and we just looking
to try to find a way to to to get
to the top and the obviously not have a losing
season like we have now. So uh, we just really
just looking for the the the how to get there.
So we tryna find out how to get there, and
uh that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 11 (33:24):
Ship.
Speaker 8 (33:25):
What you guys expect to do at the end of
this season.
Speaker 14 (33:28):
Have you been able to pinpoint what has going so
long for you guys this year and also at the
same time what it's gonna take to fix it.
Speaker 12 (33:37):
So if you don't go through another.
Speaker 17 (33:39):
Season, y'all haven't really pinpointed yet. Like I think, uh,
a lot of the reevaluation will take place once the
season's over with and being able to go through the
entire season and looking at everything. So right now, we
just trying to compete in and play hard, seal and
finish at strong as we can.
Speaker 11 (34:00):
To see what the winning plan is going to be a.
Speaker 17 (34:05):
Situation when when when they show Miles, I'll just look
over myles shoulder and and see what the plan is
and you know, I'm ready to go forward with.
Speaker 11 (34:16):
It or whatever it is. So that's how I'll do.
He said.
Speaker 8 (34:20):
A lot of guys at defense the same way he does.
Speaker 11 (34:23):
If you guys had those.
Speaker 17 (34:24):
Discussions, yeah, I think I think the biggest thing everybody
just want to win. Like we we all competitors out here.
No one wants to have a losing season and lose
majority of our games. So are our biggest thing is
trying to find a way to win, and however we
gotta get to that.
Speaker 11 (34:36):
We got work hard to try to get there.
Speaker 7 (34:37):
It seems like one of the points, feeling of individual
pieces defense.
Speaker 8 (34:43):
You guys can have a success.
Speaker 11 (34:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (34:47):
I feel we could definitely have success. I mean we
we showed spurs that throughout the season. But I mean
we gotta put it all together offense, defense and special
teams and try to find a way to play complimentary ball.
That's the biggest thing lost.
Speaker 8 (35:01):
Let's seem has gone away anybody you hope, But what
would mean.
Speaker 14 (35:04):
For you guys to give at least one last.
Speaker 19 (35:07):
One and ring from the fans.
Speaker 17 (35:08):
Yeah, that'd be huge, man. That's our biggest thing, trying
to find a way to get a win, and just
to get that win and feeling back, that's what we
that's what we're working towards. To get that win and
feeling back and do it in front of our fans
in the last home game would be huge for the
city and for us.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Next up is safety Grant Delpit, who talked about going
against the quarterback as accurate as to attack of I law.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
What do you see?
Speaker 11 (35:34):
You know, he's he's been pretty good since he's got
back faster release time they had completing percentage. You know,
it works within their scheme. So he's doing a good
job at a lot of shorts. Uh nothing really, you know,
they could kill you short and then they could love
(35:56):
you to sleep throwing short and throw along. So got
to do our job either way it goes, but just
expect what's.
Speaker 14 (36:00):
Coming even more pussure on you guys go from a
tackling standpoint because of those yeah short passes, to maybe
take advantage of them and enforce them just into the
short games.
Speaker 11 (36:14):
Yeah, they do a great job of uh you know,
they know the personnel. They know they're not you know,
contested catches, you know, down the field guys, So they
don't get him in space, let him run and make
us tackle. So that's the game plan, and you know
he's still studying it. The fastest John colective lead that
you're facing, I would assume they're the fastest in the league, right, Yeah,
(36:39):
said again, Yeah I played him three times. Yeah he
beat me twice. Wait, no, one twice. Yeah, I mean
(36:59):
I think they but they played in Green Bay, right,
so I think they're kind of experience what the call
game is there, So I'm not banking on that much
of an advantage. Okay, how much you be concerned affortune?
You had eighteen the ball like and you know, just
run it. What stays a Yeah, I mean that type
of back years and he fits that offense. So, uh,
(37:22):
they'll get him out there trying to get a a
mismatch on a wheel or something like that in the
flat wheels or angle rouse screens, and they got the
most screens in the NFL by far, I think, So
you know, they try to give him the ball. They
got like a lot of fast guys. So a D
line gonna have to run I three texts, gonna have
to get from that uh whatever outside nose of the
guard to the sideline, and that nose gonna have to
(37:44):
get from that inside nose the guard to the sideline.
So our D line gotta run that. We got to tackle.
Speaker 7 (37:48):
Too, like, uh, you send the whole.
Speaker 19 (37:52):
This football.
Speaker 16 (37:55):
Seasons or downing.
Speaker 11 (37:56):
Yeah right, I mean I think they deserve it. We
doing everything we can to win this game. So that's
our game plan. And I'm doing whatever I can win
every snap, so we know that and hopefully get the
fans won on the last one.
Speaker 7 (38:12):
Gas like talking about this year, the turnovers and wanting.
Speaker 11 (38:16):
To get more takeaways.
Speaker 7 (38:17):
I guess, like how much of a topic of the conversation.
Speaker 11 (38:20):
Yeah, I just want to win, to be honest, I
just want to win. So if the takeaway is coming
with it, it does. But we gotta do a better
job of getting a ball, of course, but whatever it
takes to win to.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
The offensive side of the ball we go. Where quarterback
doriy and Thompson. Robinson reflected on his first start of
the year.
Speaker 9 (38:34):
I'm sure can't come through.
Speaker 8 (38:38):
This step.
Speaker 20 (38:39):
Yeah, starting out into last week, was kind of feeling
a little tightness in there.
Speaker 9 (38:46):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (38:46):
Second player of the game.
Speaker 20 (38:47):
Uh, probably took a wrong step trying to push off
it on that quarterback keeper. It just kind of felt
like a big pop in there, like a big strain.
Got back in here, got some treatment on. It feels
really well right now. The guys in ere have been
taking care of me. And then with this schedule with
Christmas having off and that's coming in here on Tuesday. Uh,
(39:09):
they gave me a little extra few days to to
let it rest up. So it feels great right now.
It looks like you ran it pretty well in the
rest of the game. Did you think it slowed you
down at.
Speaker 11 (39:18):
The UH, nothing could ever slow me down.
Speaker 20 (39:20):
If it's not broke or torn all the way off
the bone, I'll play with any injury there is, UH.
And that's just kind of how I've always been, whether
it dates back to college or whatever. You know, I
lived for moments like those to you know, go out
there and play. So I wouldn't want anything to take
away from the sign to throw a lot of a
(39:41):
lot of Yeah.
Speaker 14 (39:44):
So.
Speaker 11 (39:47):
That's not my job.
Speaker 20 (39:48):
My job is to go out there and run this
offense and get us up and down the field and
score each and every drive and like I said, in
each and every drive with a kick. And right now
we're just we're focusing on not trying to beat ourselves
to turn overs, the penalties, the things that set us
back offensively. There's really the things we're trying to work
to clean up.
Speaker 8 (40:06):
So we saw the clip one.
Speaker 14 (40:08):
Of Hard Notch where you're sitting in the room with
Jamis and he's kind of walking you through his weekly routine,
what he does each day of the week.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
What does that mean to you?
Speaker 14 (40:17):
The fact you know he's taking the time to kind
of walk you through his processes.
Speaker 8 (40:21):
And they also to you know, would learn from it.
What do you feel like you can implement showing that?
Speaker 20 (40:26):
Yeah, I mean since I've gotten here, As you guys know,
there's been a bunch of veteran quarterbacks that have come
through so far in my year and a half of
being here, and with every guy that comes through here,
I've I've done the exact same thing, trying to ask
him as many questions as possible. He so, I'm still
a young guy, so trying to build up my routine
and repertoires I go through this thing, even though I
(40:47):
feel like I've said a pretty good foundation for it.
But you know, Jamis has been, like I said, great
all year, whether I'm up, Deshaun's up, whoever's in there,
or whether he's in there just showing you know, Like
I said, he's been around guys like Drew Brees and
Tom Brady, so I'm sure he's asked the same questions.
But Jamis has helped out a lot with just being
(41:08):
able to see things pre snap coverages front to eliminate
things from your reads a little bit quicker earlier, getting
into different protections, tips and tricks that he's learned along
the way.
Speaker 11 (41:21):
Like I said, that can only help me out. So
I figured I'd ask again, think go where you.
Speaker 9 (41:25):
Wanted, obviously better having goods, and now you're in a
get up a work team as you started.
Speaker 20 (41:32):
I mean, Tony, you could have asked the same thing
last year. We're not gonna use that an excuse anymore.
Like I said, this is my first time playing. I'm
not a rookie no more, so I can't use that
as an excuse. I got to go out there and
be able to execute and when things don't go right,
don't make a bad play worse. And like I said,
those are kind of the things I'm working to elimina.
Speaker 9 (41:52):
Unless you yes, yes, you feel good about correcting that.
Speaker 20 (41:57):
Yeah, of course, of course that's what Monday through Fridays
for and and definitely coming to here being a big
self critic on myself on Monday and and really you know,
dissecting that film for uh, each player as its own
and not trying to you know, sugarcoat stuff or or
point fingers here and there like, uh, look at myself
(42:19):
truly in the mirror on each and every play, good
or bad. Uh, just so we can correct it up
and clean it for next That's a good question. I mean,
you know that these guys, Uh, they have my back.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
Uh.
Speaker 20 (42:40):
They were encouraging me, not only during the game, but
after the game. You know, I think everybody in here
sees the potential and and that's probably the most frustrating
thing to me.
Speaker 11 (42:52):
Is that I'm not showing it right now. And so
that's what I'm working towards.
Speaker 20 (42:56):
Uh, it's trying to be able to put a complete
full game out there on Sunday.
Speaker 19 (42:59):
So work with Jerry about just you guys here and
try to get in the same page and work through
some things. And you know, as as your booty chemistry
with a receiver, just how how does that process go on?
Speaker 20 (43:11):
What are those conversations like, Yeah, I mean getting the
ball that's probably the biggest thing.
Speaker 6 (43:17):
Uh.
Speaker 20 (43:18):
You know, he's a great receiver, great route runner, knows
how to create separation and even when he's doubled. After
looking back at that last game, even when he got
doubled on a few plays, he broke free, whether a
second window or on a choice route, like just just
finding space.
Speaker 10 (43:34):
Uh.
Speaker 20 (43:34):
And so that's probably the biggest thing is making sure
I can trust him and his routes. And then obviously
he's gonna trust me to put the ball where it's
supposed to. So, uh, that's probably the biggest thing. We're
getting on the same page with him, as you know,
just doing my part and getting him the ball, get
for him to Yeah, yeah, for sure. Again I'm trying
to go through my reads.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
Uh.
Speaker 20 (43:55):
You know, we hadn't really practiced uh them doubling uh
Jerry as much as they did, so kind of had
to adjust on the fly. But again that's that falls
back on me on knowing the timing and spacing of
the concepts and then just trusting our best receiver.
Speaker 7 (44:14):
Film the interceptions for those am like what did you
see cho.
Speaker 20 (44:20):
All interceptions are avoidable. It's it's all based on the
quarterbacks decision to either hold onto the ball or throw it.
The one in the red zone. We didn't get to
our zero check with the amount of time that was
on the clock, So right then and there, you're already
stuck into a bad play with the protection. Like I
just mentioned, don't make a bad play worse, eat the sack,
(44:42):
kick a field goal, don't give them back to the momentum.
The second one to Dave definitely a bonehead play on me.
You know, like I talked about on Sunday, trying to
give one of our best fifty to fifty ball players
a chance right there. But again that goes back to,
you know, don't put the ball in harm's way, the
(45:05):
quarterback rule that lives for a hundred years. I don't
throw laid over the middle, and really just trusting my
legs like I had been bragging about and talking about
it all last week, to be able to use it
in that situation instead of trying to throw up a play.
Speaker 10 (45:18):
So when you were backing watched it, what could you
have done, if anything, to help the gates of there's
negative places likes five sacks, get.
Speaker 11 (45:26):
A couple of those runs you know as off the
edge and.
Speaker 18 (45:30):
Tax what you fas like, is there something you could
have ever avoided the game?
Speaker 20 (45:33):
Yeah, for sure, definitely the sacks. You know, it's a
big emphasis for me this week's stepping up in the pocket.
I did for the majority of the game, but like
you said, a few of those plays, uh, they caught
me where it was a six yard attack instead of
being a one or two yard sack, and we're in
second and twelve instead of second and fifteen. And then
(45:55):
really the run players earlier on the game. They had
a great plan. Blitten to Nickel, wasn't too much I
could do. It's not like I could have seen the
rotation or anything with emotions, and so I'd say that
was definitely a good defensive call on their part, but
definitely the sacks. I could definitely do a lot better job.
Speaker 18 (46:12):
In that area, for sure.
Speaker 8 (46:13):
You've been studying this Miami defense. Uh what concerns you
most is you prepare to face them.
Speaker 20 (46:20):
Yeah, it's a it's a disguised defense. You know, they
may not zero you or pressure you a bunch, but
they're gonna run a ton of games up front. They're
gonna switch the coverage on you every down and really
try to make the quarterback think. Uh. So again, that
falls on me not putting the ball in harm's way,
uh and keeping us moving on first and second down
(46:42):
so we're not stuck in.
Speaker 11 (46:43):
Thirty miles exactly. Of course.
Speaker 20 (46:50):
Yeah, I mean you didn't have said last game, and
Dave was banged up for most of the last game,
So it's it's gonna be the same game plan. Uh Uh,
same process for me of terms of going through my reads.
Like I said, we still have Jerry our best receiver,
so really focused on getting him the ball. And then
(47:11):
other than that, we got great talent in the receiver
room and at tight end, guys that I trust fully
with Jordan Akins, Blake white Hart and then obviously E
Moore and those guys that are stepping up in the
in the receiver room for sure. So I have no, uh,
no worries come Sunday. I was just out there at
(47:31):
practice today and it looks seamless. So, like I said,
I'm not worried about that.
Speaker 7 (47:37):
Is it like Joe Burna says, to stick with your
legs of reinforce your own release.
Speaker 20 (47:43):
Yeah, I mean we both are coached up by the
same trainer. In the off season, I watched a ton
of his tape. Me and Jamis actually talked about how
efficient he moves in the pocket, something we try to immolate.
But yeah, when one of the best to do it
right now in this season tells you something like that,
(48:03):
and it's obviously something I already know, but just to
hear from him, you know, it means a lot.
Speaker 11 (48:09):
So going into a game, you obviously know on each
play where potential like escape.
Speaker 8 (48:13):
Routes are, how different can that be you know, from
what happens on your house, Hony.
Speaker 20 (48:18):
I mean, it's very different than you sitting there with
a clicker and stopping it every five seconds versus when
the bullets are flying live. But yeah, you kind of
know based off of whether it's personnel, how their front
is lined up pre snap, how we're blocking, the protection
we're sending to of of kind of where your escape
(48:39):
routes are gonna be. And then you also got to
take into account where your routes are gonna end up
going to so that you have somebody to throw to
if you at the defense does when it come up
on yourself.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
Wide receiver Jerry Judy previewed his matchup with Jalen Ramsey
doing had a good Christmas.
Speaker 4 (48:56):
It was good. It was good, you know, to chill
with the fans.
Speaker 13 (48:58):
Sorry, it's always a good time with the family.
Speaker 5 (49:00):
You know.
Speaker 9 (49:07):
Where do you think of jail with Morinto is a cornerback.
Speaker 4 (49:09):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (49:10):
He one of the top corners in the league. You know,
he been doing it for a long time, you know,
so they gonna be a good challenge.
Speaker 10 (49:18):
Jeremy, you would bragg atta Bengals game. We little more
opportunities than you know, there are three targets and two catches.
I know they are double team in you, but when
you went back and watching field, it looked like there
were more chances for you.
Speaker 13 (49:29):
You know, there're uh, there are some opportunities out there,
you know, but unfortunately you just couldn't execute at a
high level.
Speaker 11 (49:37):
You know, so.
Speaker 4 (49:39):
Uh gotta find out another way.
Speaker 6 (49:41):
To do that.
Speaker 19 (49:42):
I know after after after the game, I know we
talk about just like just week, spend some time with DTR.
Speaker 9 (49:47):
Or when to working through certain things you kind of getting.
Speaker 11 (49:49):
On the cpage.
Speaker 8 (49:50):
Gamish was then just how's that process gone and how
have you guys kind of worked to work to you,
they really.
Speaker 9 (49:55):
Make the most of those opportunities next year.
Speaker 13 (49:58):
You know, DT I have been doing a good job.
You know that's been working. You know, we j we
we can't we can't. We just stay in contact, keep
communicating what we see on and off the field. You
know that's the best way to do it, just so
we we we be on the same page.
Speaker 14 (50:14):
As the season has progressed for you and you've had
these exclusive games that you've had, have you seen defenses
attack you differently?
Speaker 8 (50:23):
Is this year's going on?
Speaker 11 (50:25):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (50:25):
Yes, Uh, you know it's nah. I see a lot
of two mans uh type of temple two coverages. Uh,
a lot of underneath uh two high safety. So you
know that that's the biggest difference I have been seen
these past few weeks.
Speaker 5 (50:39):
There you know, we know who uh the goals to
win or side you've already hit a thousand yards?
Speaker 9 (50:44):
Is there another target behind your reach individually?
Speaker 11 (50:47):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (50:47):
My yeah, My target is to win these next two games.
I when the side n huh nah nah, I just
I just wanna win these next two games.
Speaker 6 (50:55):
Some certain over where the game that's gonna play or
whether it's obviously that makes it tough around you because
you help what you need.
Speaker 8 (51:07):
So if those guys, what three.
Speaker 13 (51:11):
Guys do that to make sure that you know that
you're not particularly from you know, Davin said, you know
two great players, you know, but you got a lot
of great guys. If you want the double te me,
you know, you got logic getting open, you got you
got all titands getting open, you got all the rest
of the receivers getting open, so that you know, uh,
(51:31):
they could try to double tv me.
Speaker 11 (51:32):
You know, other guy's gonna eat.
Speaker 13 (51:33):
So that's that's a good thing of having other great
receivers around you.
Speaker 14 (51:39):
When you look at this uh you know this brand
and uh secondary what what are you seeing? What is
most challenging for you as you uh prepare.
Speaker 13 (51:50):
I see a lot of zone uh, a lot of
disguise coverages. So the biggest thing is for me it
just read my triangle, you know, believe what I see
out there. Uh, that's the biggest thing for real, Just
making sure that I s I s I believe in
what I see out there, and and don't let they
how they move move around on the field kind of
mess up mine what I see.
Speaker 14 (52:11):
This is your.
Speaker 2 (52:19):
Plays.
Speaker 6 (52:22):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (52:22):
You know, I definitely felt uh since the first game,
you know, since the Capboy game. I felt a lot
of energy out there, a lot of passion.
Speaker 20 (52:29):
You know.
Speaker 13 (52:30):
Unfortunately we ain't come out with a lot the wins
at home like uh the fans and we expected. But
you know, I definitely feel the energy.
Speaker 20 (52:39):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
I definitely feel the support out there, you know.
Speaker 13 (52:41):
Uh you know, hopefully, uh next year it'll be way
better than than before.
Speaker 11 (52:49):
And that's a play with a lot of quarter doll Yeah.
Speaker 9 (52:53):
Yeah, you've had to get pass see, so you've turned.
Speaker 8 (52:56):
Your former langage career.
Speaker 9 (52:59):
You know, my bad eyes, turn the corner and season.
Speaker 13 (53:05):
Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. You know, the biggest
thing is the stand consistent. That's where I'm at with
everything right now. That's stay consistent, staying at there's now
a one time thing. You know, I could I could
do that for the rest of my career and that's
what i'm'a keep.
Speaker 9 (53:18):
Doing pretty bit, DT.
Speaker 10 (53:20):
It's ability to scramble like he does pretty places his feet.
Do you have to go back to, you know, that
scrambling or stuff that you can be early in the season.
Speaker 13 (53:28):
Yeah, yeah, more definitely, you know since DT are uh
a great scrambling quarterback that know how to move to
Newver through the pocket, and you know, we definitely gotta
stay on top of that just cause the top of
quarterback he is, and make sure we always available to
him when it when it's time to.
Speaker 11 (53:42):
Make a play. Yeah.
Speaker 13 (53:50):
Now, DT all do got a strong wom We do
come pretty hot, you know, but it of course it's catchable,
so you know, that's that's the that's the only thing
that matters, you know.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
So Yeah, finally, today All Pro guard Joel but Toonio
talked about playing in the last home game of the season.
Speaker 9 (54:04):
This is the last home game of this season, You're
gonna see.
Speaker 18 (54:11):
You know, like you said, for the season, it's the
last one. We'll see how we're doing in you know,
a couple of weeks after the season. Like it's very
hard to make a decision when you're in the middle
of it. You're going through that daily grind, you know
what I mean. So I'm gonna you know, finish the
year as strong as I can, and you know, see
how we feel in a couple of weeks and you know,
(54:32):
go from there.
Speaker 8 (54:33):
What could be the what'll be the determining factors for
you once once you get yeah, this season, what what
you be thinking about before you make your decision.
Speaker 18 (54:42):
Truthfully, it's mostly personal, just like how my body feels,
you know, going into another season. You know, like the game,
like it's it's it's an amazing game, like blessed to play,
but it's a stressful game, like you put a lot
on your body, Like how are you gonna feel in
ten years or fifteen years or twenty years, you know,
(55:03):
And so we'll just we'll just go from there, talk
with the family and and kind of see where we're at.
Speaker 11 (55:27):
Yeah, I want to.
Speaker 18 (55:32):
You know, the goal now, like year in, year eleven,
year twelve, you know, like you want to try and
win games, Like it's hard to go out there and
go have three wins right now, Like that's been tough,
Like it's tough on your body, Like you just don't.
Speaker 11 (55:44):
Feel as good on Monday when you when you're losing games.
Speaker 18 (55:46):
So it's part of the process, and you'd love to
hear what the plan is, you know, going forward and
kind of see where we're at, see how much winning
you can do. I don't know specifically with Joe Thomas,
but he was like in the start slash middle of
rebuild when he was he was retiring, and I don't
know if that played a factor or if he was
just done anyway. But you know, you see that sometimes
in guys where it's like, you know, what what do
(56:08):
they have you know coming back and stuff like that.
But that's all stuff I'm gonna worry about in the
off season right now. You know, I gotta I got
a game to play and we gotta we gotta lock
in because they have some you know, good players up front.
Speaker 11 (56:22):
Yeah that's fine.
Speaker 18 (56:37):
Yeah, I mean for me personally, like I don't know
what they think. I'm there but like I'm gonna be
a Cleveland Brown, I think for for my career. So
if I come back, Like whatever decision they make a
quarterback is what decision they make, you know. So I
I you know, I'm not as young as Miles where
you have some options uh other places. So for me,
it's more gonna be like how I feel personally, how
(56:59):
my family feels and and all that stuff.
Speaker 9 (57:03):
Always wanted to do that time. Why do you die
not seek an exit?
Speaker 18 (57:10):
Super I think it's hard to Like, I mean, Cleveland
gave me a chance, and I've been here for eleven years,
and you know there's been some you know, losing and
things like that, but we we've had some moments where
you know, we've won and we've we've had some some
runs here and those memories are always great for me.
(57:31):
But they've given me so much and and I love
this organization and what they've done for for me and
my family, and at this point in my career, like
I just can't see myself putting on a different helmet,
Like it just doesn't make sense to me. And that's
kind of kind of what it's And I think it's
hard to pick, like who's gonna win the super Bowl
this year, like we you know what I mean, it's
hard to pick a team that needs a you know,
(57:53):
left guard that that wants to bring you in, that
wants to you know, take care of you.
Speaker 11 (57:57):
And you make that decision to be like.
Speaker 18 (57:58):
Hey, we're going to win a super Bowl here, and
quarterback gets hurt or someone gets hurt or you get hurt,
and then you're like, dang, I just chase the super
Bowl for you know what purpose. Like it's easy in
hindsight to be like, oh, yeah, Joe should have gone
to Denver that one year, but like you don't know
what would have happen when he you know, goes out
there and stuff like that. So I think that all
that is is so hard to decide on.
Speaker 14 (58:18):
You know.
Speaker 11 (58:18):
It's just that would be out of out of the
question for me when you.
Speaker 14 (58:23):
You mentioned this Miami front game question for you here,
you mean, just what's what's challenging about that defensive fun
to pay for it?
Speaker 18 (58:30):
You know, they've been a little banged up on the edges,
you know, with with Phillips and I don't know Chubb's
been practicing, but I don't know if he's coming back
and and things like that. But they're inside guys, are big,
tall guys, like obviously we've played Klay's Campbell Bunch, but
he's still playing at a high level. Zealer's playing really
well too, and they work so well with games, like
they're not necessarily winning one on one all the time,
(58:51):
but they run these pick games and they're they're twisting
their linebackers. Add they have all types of these games
that we've been trying to work on last few days
in practice, So that'd be a big challenge for us.
And they're all smart players, like they know, you know
when you're running certain books and stuff like that, So
it'll be it'll be good challenge to make sure we're
communicating up from make sure we're on the same page.
Speaker 8 (59:10):
Jory talking about stepping up in the pocket, trying.
Speaker 10 (59:12):
To avoid some of those big sects and he took
seat any the second game with him a starter. Do
you think collectively you guys can improve on it.
Speaker 18 (59:20):
Yeah, Like you said, it's a group effort, you know,
like if he's gonna step up, the inside interior line
has to be firm in the protection and we have
to give them a chance to step up. But the
way we're setting and stuff like it's aling for the
tack is to run him by a ten or eleven.
Speaker 11 (59:32):
Let him step up.
Speaker 18 (59:33):
I think, you know, you haven't played football in a year,
like to get out there and it's going full speed
and seeing live bulls for the first time. I think
he has to, you know, I think he's gonna improve.
Speaker 11 (59:44):
I think they'll be.
Speaker 18 (59:44):
Extreme good practice and all that stuff. But you know,
they're a talented group up front, so it'll be it'll
be a challenge for us this time here.
Speaker 14 (59:51):
When the temptress about freezing, and I'm sure you're happy
about it, but considering what Miami's record is when it is,
you know, for low freezing, are you a little disappointed
when you' could that forecast for Sunday?
Speaker 18 (01:00:01):
Uh No, I mean it's supposed to be like a
little rainy, right, like fifty degrees or something like that.
We have had a huge cold front and now you know,
December January rolls around and we're warming back up. But
I don't look too much and I just see what
the weather is for like what cleats I'm gonna wear.
But I mean, it's been funny to play in like
twenty degrees and let him freeze it out a little bit,
because I do. I do hate going down there when
(01:00:21):
it's like ninety degrees and humid, so you know, give
them a little bit of a payback.
Speaker 4 (01:00:26):
So do you feel like this team, you guys are.
Speaker 11 (01:00:32):
Like like I do.
Speaker 18 (01:00:42):
I think I've seen it with the majority of guys
in here, Like we were a playoff team last year
and we won eleven games. So I see the people
in the town and the pieces. I don't think it'll
be easy though. I think, you know, you have to
put your head down, you have to work, you have
to have a plan in the offseason to prove. All
these things have to go to it. But I don't
(01:01:03):
think it's a total like, gosh, we have no talent
nobody here.
Speaker 14 (01:01:07):
I know you don't want to be too reflective, dis yeah,
but just in your mind, do you have an idea
of just what specifically has gone so wrong for you
guys this year?
Speaker 8 (01:01:19):
And if so in your in your thought process, then
how quick of a fix is that?
Speaker 18 (01:01:26):
Right? I wish I had like a answer, because then
I'd have been like telling the coaches, like, hey, we
should probably not do this, you know what I mean?
Speaker 11 (01:01:32):
Like this has been costing us games.
Speaker 18 (01:01:34):
But I think it just comes down like you watch
a play and it's like, gosh, the left guard missus
block there, you know what I mean, Like if he
made his block there, we got ten yards. And then
the next play it's like, oh man, the receiver you know,
was just a little bit off on his timing, or
like you know, a pre snap penalty.
Speaker 11 (01:01:50):
Like all these little.
Speaker 18 (01:01:51):
Things turn into big things, and I think for us
it's been a case of the little things this year,
which sucks because it's the details you look at and
you're like, we can fix those things, and we obviously,
you know, it's been something new. Every week we fix
one thing, something else breaks. So that's that's been a
struggle for us. But I don't have a true like
exactly what's going on, but it just seems like play
to play, it's like one thing that hurts us. Or
(01:02:12):
you know, the first drive of the game last week,
I think as a perfect example, like you get down
to the one yard line the first drive to put
it in and we fumbled and they go ninety nine
and score touchdown, and.
Speaker 11 (01:02:21):
It's like no one's fault.
Speaker 18 (01:02:23):
But it's like those are the type of things you
know you fumbled and you jump off sides on the
first play on defense, you know you give a chance.
We get back in the red zone to get a
one score game, we turn the ball over again. Like
things like that are just like that's not winning football,
and that's kind of kind of where we've been at
this year.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
