Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this week seventeen postgame edition of the From
the Podium podcast. I'm Gabe Koala. The Browns dropped their
final home game of the season to the Miami Dolphins
by a score of twenty to three. On this episode,
you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson,
and defensive end Miles Garrett. Up first, as head coach
Kevin Stefanski k.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Injuries Jerome has an ankle injury, droom Forard Denzel's shoulder,
Jordan Hicks concussion. We'll update the rest of the guys
as we see him today and tomorrow. Obviously, you know,
not good enough. You gotta come away with a win,
gotta come away with taking care of the football, putting
ourselves in a position to go find a way to win,
and we didn't do that. So that's that's the disappointing part.

(00:46):
You know, the results are are what they are. That's frustrating.
But with that, I'll take any questions.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
You had a decision to either kick go forward for
the goal from the three.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Why'd you decide to go for us in six points?

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, just with that field position, I think it's really
and to get the seven there from the three yard line.

Speaker 5 (01:04):
On those fourth downs, I think you guys are zero
for four. I know the one was in the end zone,
but did you see anything on those three and the
other three? I know there's a huge plays in the game.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah, I mean a turnoverund downs is a turnover. I
know it doesn't officially go down as a turnover, but
you're putting your defense back there on the field, and
you know you got to come through when it's fourth
and one, the advantage has to be towards the offense
and you have to come through there.

Speaker 6 (01:25):
I saw you talking to Dorian on the sidelines after
the pick. Obviously a LEVI star for him there would.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Just see them.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, I think, you know, obviously you're always at every play.
You're looking at it and thinking about the decision and
the accuracy and all those things, and just making sure
that he's understanding in those roles when when you have
to locate defenders. I think that was really the biggest
thing there on that play.

Speaker 7 (01:48):
As long as he's struggling with some of the you know,
the real short basic stuff, whether it's you know, throwing
out of the backfield, throwing it into the flag, not
even just going down the field, but it just seems
he's really struggling with timing on those shorter routes.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, we'll look at it, and you know it's not
for lack of effort. He's putting in the work. We'll
look to help him in any way we can to
score some points.

Speaker 8 (02:09):
Determined to have him finish this game.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Why, I just felt like that's what was best for
the team.

Speaker 6 (02:16):
I know it's early, but will you start him next
week in Baltimore?

Speaker 7 (02:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
I won't get into anything for next week, Markay the
official groundings.

Speaker 9 (02:23):
I know it's not just on the quarterback, but does
he have to sort of.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
You know, in those situations try to I mean, is
there something he can do to avoid those?

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Certainly you want to avoid those. Those are big penalties
with the loss of down and the yardage. So we'll
continue to coach them up. And there's obviously, as everybody knows,
there's certain times that that a sack is okay. You
know you have to You don't love it, but sometimes
you have to do that. It's like anything with the
young quarterback, teaching when to throw it away, when to
make that decision. So We'll keep coaching.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Them, Kevin, how do you get your guys ready? It's
one game to go and things and so bad. I'd
get them ready to play a team like Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah, it's no different than every single week. Jeff. It's
the NFL. It's a privilege to play in this league.
It's a privilege to coach in this league. We love
the competitive nature of these games. It's a division opponent,
that's just how we operate.

Speaker 7 (03:16):
Well, he's got two sacks to get to that fourteen,
making a little history just I mean, one of the
few positives from today. Just what can you say about
the consistency he brings in.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
The weekend weekend? Yeah, plays hard and you know, I
think he got real close on a few field goal
block attempts as well. And I think that's a great
measure of how hard you're playing, is how hard you
go in that unit. And he's given us everything he's got.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Kevin, you were a fan of Snoop throughout the preseason
and all of that.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
But what did you see in Tyler today?

Speaker 10 (03:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
I mean you made a great play there on that
third down. We brought everybody. He made somebody miss and
you know, natural ability took over, but obviously he made
a few plays today.

Speaker 9 (03:56):
Can you guys have obviously Supportedstin through his struggles this season,
but seeing him make that feel a goo? What did
that just me for confidence wise?

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah? I like we've talked about with Dustin's you know,
always work through this with him. He's a veteran. He's
kicking it really well in practice. Obviously just had that
one opportunity in this one, but a veteran that we
really trust.

Speaker 8 (04:17):
Kevin fans will take consolation and moving up to number
three in the draft order. How do you feel about that?

Speaker 6 (04:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:22):
I have no comment on that, Tony.

Speaker 6 (04:25):
How about with Denzel?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Do you think he could be.

Speaker 6 (04:27):
Lost, you know for next week?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, it's way too early telling injuries.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
Pierre looked like he left about two minutes left YE.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Evaluating him for a head injury. But I don't have
any information pass that Denzel.

Speaker 10 (04:38):
When did the injury to Denzel? And the third because
we found.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Out about it right, you know, while you guys were
on off and start second half?

Speaker 8 (04:44):
Was it late in that I.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Believe it was right at that last possession in the
second quarter.

Speaker 5 (04:50):
Can know, it's all been disappointing but the fact he
goes two and six at home. You talked about trying
to come out of here with the win. Just what's
that frustration level, like, especially have to go and eight one.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, I mean this it's we've got the best home
field advantage in the NFL with our crowd and how
into it they are. We haven't done enough as a
football team to keep them into it. So that's the
frustrating part, you know.

Speaker 10 (05:13):
I you know.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Really wanted to get this one for them in this building,
being the last one at home, So it's frustrated.

Speaker 8 (05:20):
Obviously, you committed to getting Judy the ball. Eighteen targets
was up the number envision.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
You know, Jerry's our best player on offense. Were trying
to get him the ball? At which way we can.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Next quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson, you're just talking to Jerry.

Speaker 6 (05:37):
He put a lot of the sun himself or he
said you played a great game and he had too
many drops and was really frustrated with himself. What do
you say to that.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
It's a team sport, especially in offensive football. All ten
guys got to be working together to be able to
make a play go. Ultimately, I'm the one with the
ball in my hand, I got to make better decisions
and can't have those two turnover.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
So so are those Is that what sticks with you
the fact that you turned the ball over again twice
when you wanted to play clean ball today?

Speaker 3 (06:10):
For sure, I can't remember the last game we had
where we didn't have a turnover, and so that is
really frustrating, especially on my part after harping on ball
security all week and coach has been harping on ball
security all year, So it's definitely a point of emphasis.
And it didn't get done today.

Speaker 9 (06:30):
Or what did you see?

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Look like you did have Jerry or somebody kind of
behind that defender what what kind of what was your nameage?

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Probably say, yeah, are running back? Didn't get out. He
got caught up in the line coming through the middle
of the line and one of the D linemen grabbed him,
so he wasn't able to occupy that backer. Uh, again,
that falls on me and decision making. They were playing
too high. Shell snapped my eyes back and and really

(06:59):
just locked then on Jerry instead of seeing out in
front of him.

Speaker 8 (07:02):
Well, you committed to get the ball to Judy talking
to him eighteen times? Was it more than you expected.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
I wish it was more. You know, it's our best receiver.
We got to be able to get the ball in
his hands as much as possible.

Speaker 6 (07:15):
What can you say about you spent a lot of
time with with Snoop, you know, in the in the
preseason and all that. What can you say You didn't
really get a chance to watch him in skame I note,
But what can you say about you know, some of
the things maybe if you've looked up and saw him
do it.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, man, I'm proud of him. We had those conversations
back in training camp when he was here and just
on kind of what we wanted this year to look
like for each other. And so to see him getting
opportunities and then for me to get opportunity. I know
he's happy for me too. So I couldn't be more
proud of him.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
What'd you see in some of those fourth down player
when you guys have stopped starting with the one to
draw to Jerry on that slant he thought he might
have gotten hell.

Speaker 10 (07:54):
But what'd you see?

Speaker 8 (07:55):
It?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Just trying to do my job, execute the player at
a high level. Those are the reads on those plays,
And like I said, it's a it's a real team
game on offense, so we got to have all other
ten guys doing their jobs too.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
What about next week? Do you feel like you will
get the opportunity to finish this out and start again
in Baltimore? Do you know yet or anything?

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Not focused on that. I'm about to go home, watch
this tape and just be really critical of myself. So
come Monday I can go in there and let coach.

Speaker 6 (08:28):
For you.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
And it is you are in like a game to
game lease you even mentioned the short leash. Ask to
what does.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Sound like for you. It's a part of the position,
part of my where I'm at in my career. It's
a learning experience, a growing experience, something I gotta work through.
It's it's not an excuse, it's just hard.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
So how much do you want that opportunity next week
to just go turn this around a little bit and
finish it up on astronoment?

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Of course, everybody in that locker room wants staying on
a high note out for this offseason. Obviously, this year
isn't where we wanted it to be. But for me personally,
you know, I love this game of football. I love
being out there with that group of men in the
locker room, coaches and players and everybody else included. So
for me to be able to get another shot, you know,

(09:18):
it's it's gonna click eventually. And that's all I can say.

Speaker 8 (09:22):
Were you concerned at all? Have you ever been lifted
in this game?

Speaker 3 (09:25):
At any point?

Speaker 10 (09:26):
You said?

Speaker 6 (09:26):
What?

Speaker 8 (09:27):
Were you concerned at all? That you were would be
lifted from this game? Though?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
It wasn't the thought on my mind. It's thought about
executing the plays, doing my job on each and every play.
And like I said, it's what tape is forward to
go back and learn from them. Ultimately, I thought I
executed for the most part in terms of doing my job.

Speaker 5 (09:48):
Yes, those first two intentional groundings, I know there's pressure,
but what did you see in what could you have
done differently to avoid.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Different know where my checkdowns are? You know you said
there was pressure on my face, So I mean, there's
not really much you can do besides maybe take a
sack hold onto the ball. Again, we're trying to eliminate
those plays, so you know, it's it's one of those

(10:16):
tough spots. But again we'll go that's what films for them.
We'll go back and look at us how I can
correct it for next week.

Speaker 9 (10:22):
You talk during the week will Miami disguise of defense?
So when you're out there, though, how did you adapt
to what they were doing and trying to avoid any
pressure or anything?

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Yeah, I mean they caught us. I'd say three plays
with pressure that really gave us a headache. Other than that,
they were playing two deep five underneath the whole game,
whether they got to it through invert Tampa, whatever it was,
they were sitting in a two deep shell and making
us try to take completions up and down the field.
And again, that's why it's so important that each play,

(10:56):
all guys are doing their jobs that we can continue
to progress the ball down the field, including myself.

Speaker 6 (11:00):
Do you allow yourself to imagine what a game like
this would have been like had gave them a joke,
You've been able to play, had said been able to play,
and you had a few more places to go with
the ball.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
No, because that's not who I practiced with all week.
I practiced with the guys that were out there today,
and like I said, as a group with me included,
we did not do our jobs at a high level
good enough today.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
But did I misunderstand you. I think, did you say
you thought you executed better today or I didn't sure
I understood you correctly.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
I said, for most of the game, I did my
job on the play that was asked of being required
of me on those plays.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
Yes, so you think you played better than you did
last week them.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
I mean the outcomes the same, whether you again through
for a million or didn't. You obviously didn't make enough
plays to win the game. So we keep coming out
with these losses, and we got to find a way.

Speaker 10 (11:56):
To fix that.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Finally, defensive end Miles Garrett, who became the first player
in NFL history to record four consecutive seasons of fourteen
or more sacks.

Speaker 11 (12:05):
How frustrating was it for you to get that fourteen
sacks in a loss at home final home game of
the season.

Speaker 10 (12:15):
They're all frustrating, and a loss the first one or
fourteenth one or haveing many more. There's out there force,
So doesn't make it any better any worse.

Speaker 6 (12:27):
But do you take some consolation in getting the two
and reaching a milestone of the first NFL player to
get four straight years of fourteen sacks?

Speaker 10 (12:36):
Does that do anything for you personally at this moment? No,
And I'll see my family in a short second and
now tell me that and try to put a smile
on my face and and you know, I'll still be
holding on to this l because at the end of
the day, we play for wins.

Speaker 6 (12:53):
Now.

Speaker 10 (12:53):
The individual stuff is great, it's nice. You want to
be remembered for all the above, but cities remember you
for wins and bringing bringing championships you know back home,
and uh, you know that's always hit my intention. So
I want to get back on track. I want to
get back to winning, whether it's the last one or
you know, whatever's in the store next season.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Miles, you obviously are familiar with Snoop, not just from
training camp, but also you know Baltimore.

Speaker 5 (13:20):
What how much was it same, Moll Snoop and how
much did you do?

Speaker 8 (13:26):
Is maybe a difference in him tonight?

Speaker 12 (13:28):
You know for.

Speaker 10 (13:29):
Them, he was trying to, you know, run the offenses
as suppo as he could, you know, beading the defense,
getting out quick. But you know, his his natures to
you know, hold on to the ball, you know, be
a little bit more aggressive, and you know when he
doesn't see it, he wants to, you know, uh, win
it down with his feet, and you know, we tried
to take advantage of that, and you know we're able

(13:51):
to get make some plays and uh get some get
some hits on him. But he's elusive, he's fast, and uh,
you know, he was able to escape a few and
my move really came up with a big play after
y'all ran me to the sideline.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
Well, so I know we talked a couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 12 (14:07):
You seem to indicate that you still have faith and
the major pieces of this defense that you guys can
be successful and letting together. It's just with the winds
and losses being what they are, what still gives you
the faith In.

Speaker 10 (14:18):
The Capitals group, I mean, you still got a lot
of young guys who are you know, new to this system,
new to you know, Schwartz and and myself, you know,
still been building that chemistry but still going out there
making plays and uh just just all learning to jail.
And uh, you know, some guys been thrust into action

(14:39):
and really uh gone out there and and uh showed
the behind. So I've got faith that they can continue
to grow in the upcoming year uh years, and uh,
I think even with the short fields and you know,
some of the uh the uh, the the take uh
the turnovers, you know they were we were able to
really hold them, know to less points than you know

(15:02):
they they really should have put up giving given know.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
What you said under stool like not want to go
to rebuild a meeting to know to plan did it
any round at all today that this could be your
last home getting here.

Speaker 10 (15:13):
I don't think about that kind of stuff. My mission
is to go out there and try to help this
team win as a leader, as a brother, as a teammate.
That's that's why I solely focus on you know, I'm
not you know, I'm not looking into the future. And uh,
next thing on my mind is recovery. Looking at film,
how can we improve on to Ravens and uh try

(15:36):
to play spoiler for them? You know, we gotta find
a way to to uh to get more takeaways on defense,
you know, get some get our offensive some better uh
position to score and uh take advantage.

Speaker 9 (15:49):
I'm going back to that act's playing. But you guys
like allowed them to convert to of eleven up their
down and they under the ball seven times. So defensively,
what did you guys see that was working well for
you to put him in those situations and force them
to fall as much as the day.

Speaker 10 (16:02):
You know, I just you know, trying to best to
keep him in the pocket and uh, you know, take
away some of those shorter throws to make them, make
them go along, give them, keep them uncomfortable. You know,
there were some some pressures that we had, you know,
to to move the front and uh you know, get there,
get their line moving and not allow them to uh
to to chip as much. And uh, you know we
have some success.

Speaker 7 (16:24):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Denzel said earlier this week that the grounds are showing
you to play for the future.

Speaker 7 (16:28):
You'd like to pick over your shoulder and see.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
What there's they're showing you.

Speaker 7 (16:33):
What kind of partner has he been in leadership and
in you know, just the rush corner.

Speaker 10 (16:38):
Tanna, since you guys have been here to other Yeah,
I mean he's been a great example for uh, for
the team and for the defense, you know, just being
you know, steadfast and being on the field. You know,
with his uh results, his performances, never being satisfied with uh,
you know, with the results that he puts out. You know,
he he always wants more and uh, you know, even the

(17:00):
other day it was asking you know, how can I
take it up a notch? What do you still? You know?
What are you still you know, no fighting for? And
how much how much more is there out there? It's like, yo,
there's there's so many more plays still to be made,
you know, two games, one games, there's still four quarters. Now,
you still have a legacy to build, you st to

(17:21):
have you don't uh, you know, kids that come to
the game just to see you. You know, that should
be enough motivation to go out there and make your
make yourself a household name, make yourself memory remembered, so
you know, just continue to find something that gets you
out of bed, it keeps keeps you fighting when you
see guys.

Speaker 6 (17:38):
Like Denzel and now you see Isaiah coming along and
I know, yeah she touched on this a little bit,
but I mean, do you feel encouraged you guys at
that fourth through one stop today? Do you feel excited
and encouraged about the defensive side of the ball and
knowing that once again, if you guys aren't getting all
the turnovers on offense, that you guys are in position
to get back to being that dominant elite defense that

(18:01):
you were last year.

Speaker 10 (18:03):
H I mean, it's gotta get healthy. You know, we
gotta know, get the young guys up to speed, and
uh you know you can definitely see the the talent
that we have just about you know, getting it all
on the same page. And that's been the story of
the season, like getting not the execution, not having those
lapses in communication or judgment. And uh no, those guys
will definitely come along, you know you can you can see,

(18:25):
no what we have, but it's you know, it's gonna
take some time, go more.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
A lot of stuff.

Speaker 12 (18:30):
Gratifying hasn't been to see Isaiah finished like he has
after his.

Speaker 10 (18:34):
Kind of his ways so an uh kind of what
we expected. No, he has you know a lot of
the uh uh physical attributes to be a a really
good player in this league. You know it's about uh
you know, mindset and consistency, not taking 'em down for granted. No, No,

(18:54):
continue to to work on his uh his football IQ
and and uh you know, uh no, continue to trim
his physique. No, there's still there's still another level he
can take it, for sure. And know that's what I'll
try to continue to uh to work with him on
as a the off season comes up.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Did you forget sack in that early play where didn't
know what stamps coming.

Speaker 10 (19:18):
I remember a play like that at Pittsburgh years ago,
I have six years ago now where he's fun with
a snap and the receivers went out and uh, he
fell in on and I and I I touched him
and they called him aboarded plays. I kind of felt
like he might be you know, something similar. So I
have to go out and go get a couple more racy.

Speaker 11 (19:39):
The word ridiculous, can you tradies or word ridiculous when
talking about you know, some of the lapses and the
penalties turnovers of such such types of things that have
happened this year. Is that kind of a shared sentiment
around the locker room?

Speaker 10 (19:53):
Uh? Yeah it is. But try not to no voice
like that. You'll try to be constructive as possible. I'll
try to encourage guys. I know he is as well,
and he's just airing a bit of his frustration. And
you know, you got to see both sides of it.
You can't just know, be no calm and cool all

(20:14):
the time. And you've got to you know, no lead
with the no that gentle and example. But you also
got to tell a guy how it is. You gotta
be realistic and you know, tell him when you know
we're getting out of hand and we got we gotta
self correct.

Speaker 6 (20:31):
I thought I saw you visit the medical tent twice today.
I'm just wondering, was this like some lingering thing or
did you get a new injury today? And are you
kind of dragging yourself to the finish line a little
bit until you finished next week.

Speaker 10 (20:42):
I'm just old. I'm twenty nine. I'm not going to
be dragging myself to the finish line. I'll be fine
by Friday, Saturday and be ready to go.

Speaker 1 (20:52):
