Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this Christmas Eve edition of the From the
Podium podcast. I'm Gabe Koala. We at the Browns would
love to wish everyone a happy Holidays this season. On
this episode, you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski, running
back Jerome Ford, and linebacker Jordan Hicks. Up first is
head coach Kevin Stefanski, who gave an injury update following
Sunday's game against the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Heay injury front. Dorian's working through that CAF injury. I'll
be able to update you guys as we get through
the week. Dave Nijoku came out of the game with
a knee injury. Don't have a ton of updates there. Again,
we'll see how he comes through. You know, obviously very
proud of him for pushing through that hamstring injury, and
you know, I think it says a lot about Dave
and his ability to do that. You know, watching the

(00:49):
tape obviously feel very similar to how we felt after
the game. We just put ourselves in a hole early
and struggled to dig ourselves out of that. But you
have to look at the things that we did early
in that ballgame to put ourselves behind and those are
the things that we're addressing today.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
But with that, I'll take any questions.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Kevin.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
This isn't the first time you've been asked about Judy
getting not getting the ball enough, and you've always responded, yes,
we have to get them the ball. My question is,
is that inability to get receiver ball more a function
of game planning, play calling or quarterback decision making.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Well, I think it's a combination of all of those things, Tony.
When you're talking about any type of target, you know,
it's our job as coaches to put together a game
plan where you know your best players are obviously the primary,
but then you have to go with what the defense does.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
That's the other piece of it.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
I think Tony, that you have to when you're coaching
the quarterbacks, make sure they understand that the ball goes
where the ball goes dictated by coverage. Obviously, there's things
that we do and will always continue to do to
try to get our guys open. And certainly it's no
secret that Jerry is a huge, huge part of our offense.
So it goes without saying that we want him to

(02:06):
touch the ball more.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
Okay, and just to ask you again about DTR. If
he is healthy this week, he will start against Miami.

Speaker 6 (02:15):
Yes, yeah, Kevin, just wondering if for some reason Dorian
isn't healthy, who are you kind of getting ready to
start against the Dolphins. Would that be Bailey or would
you go back to Jamis.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I think it's probably premature to We will work through that,
Mary Kay. I say that just because I got to
see how Jamis comes through with his shoulder injury as well,
so I have to see how all that shakes out
this week.

Speaker 7 (02:40):
Kevin, I'm that dtr calf. I mean yesterday after the game,
you thought you expected him to be okay by Sunday
he said he was going to do everything. Is anything
changed or do you still optimistic he'll be the guy Sunday?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:49):
I mean he played through it the whole time, so
you know, give the kid credit for that because that
happened on the first couple of plays. But like anything,
like any injury, you just have to be careful and
make sure that you treat it.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
But yeah, of course hopeful, yes.

Speaker 7 (03:03):
Okay, And then with him, what can he do better
inside the pocket to avoid some of those sacks in
some of those pressures that he faced yesterday.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I mean I think it's always a combination of things, Scott.
We have to number one, you need to put yourself
in a position where you don't have to drop back
as often as we have.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
That's one piece of it.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
But also it always is a combination of quarterbacks moving
within the pocket, having the correct depth in the pocket,
the line setting the depth of the pocket, and the width.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
So everybody has to work together.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
In that regard.

Speaker 8 (03:36):
Kevin dtr didn't have any passing yards or net passing
yards I should say they're in that first half, but
he seemed to kind of get on a little bit
of a role there in the third quarter. Just what
did you see from him coming out of the locker
room and how can he build on that from a
developmental standpoint in these next couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yeah, I think we played better as a football team
in the second half there. Daryl obviously made some plays
there with Dorian with his feet first and foremost. I
thought he did a nice job of gaining some first
downs with his feet, and then they did a nice
job spreading the ball around to our guys when those
opportunities presented themselves.

Speaker 8 (04:14):
And we just We've talked so much about the turnovers
these last two years. You even mentioned, you know, the
thirty seven you had a year ago, You're up to
thirty this year. You know, how do you as you
wind this season down? I guess evaluate how you guys
as coaches, can I guess, you know, work on that

(04:36):
more in practice, or change how you work on it
or whatnot so you can slow those down come twenty
twenty five.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, I think I understand the question.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I think big picture, I'll save the reflections if you will.
As you can imagine, you're constantly coaching ball security when
it comes to the offense, and that can be as
simple as technique center quarterback exchange to the quarterback handing
the ball, the running back to quarterbacks, decision making. Really,
it factors into so many of those things because we

(05:09):
know how important that is when you're talking about winning
and losing. So but in terms of the big picture, Daryl,
I'd say i'd save some of those thoughts for until
after the season.

Speaker 9 (05:18):
Hey, Kevin, just a few quick ones then, So do
you think David's going to try to play against Miami
or are you ruling him out?

Speaker 2 (05:26):
No, not ruling him out. I don't have all the
information yet, just yet, Ashley. I'll update you guys one
appropriate as you can imagine. If he can play, he'll play.

Speaker 9 (05:34):
And then what about said again and ruling him out
And do you guys expect him to practice this week
or how's he coming through the protocol?

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yeah, still making his way through the protocol and we'll
be obviously patient with this and make sure he's you know,
accomplishing all the appropriate steps. But we'll see how it goes.

Speaker 10 (05:53):
Hey, Kevin, I know that Dustin Hopkins has a process
and he kind of sticks to it, stays confident in that.
At any point though, where you see some of those
struggles and you want to maybe insert a different process,
kind of have him switch it up, have him try
something new, or do you kind of let that process
play out despite that?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Well, I think to your question, Cam, I think we
have to work through it. I think it's something that
he's continuing to work through. Obviously wants to get his
technique back down where he feels really good about it,
and we'll just work through it.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Is really the bottom line.

Speaker 6 (06:29):
Yeah, Kevin, just wondering, I'm not sure if you said
this already or not, but is Dave having an MRI.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Today, Yes, but I don't have all the information yet
on the injury, okay.

Speaker 6 (06:41):
And then the other question is, in the event that
Bailey has to start or if not, maybe serve as
the backup again, what have you seen in him in
his short time here to show you that he could
go in there and function.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well, yeah, we have confidence in all of our guys,
Mary Kay, I think Bailey has done a nice job
since he's gotten here picking up the system. I think
he probably had the system down after about a day.
Very intelligent.

Speaker 11 (07:05):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
And then there's some similarities to what he was doing
when he was in New England this summer, so really
understands what we have to do. He's done a nice
job in practice. So but we'll see where this week
takes us.

Speaker 7 (07:16):
Hey, Kevin, I know what we see Miles do a
bunch of you know, freak stuff. But did you get
a good view of him chasing down Burrow towards your
guys sideline yesterday? And did that just looked different to
me the speed he was using in that effort to
get to him.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah, you know, obviously had a good view of that
when it happened live And then had a good view
of it just watching the tape and listen that that's
a unbelievable effort play to run him down, to contact
him inbounds, you know, versus a player that we know
is very, very elusive. So that's when when we're at

(07:50):
our best, that's that's our defense flying around the field.

Speaker 7 (07:53):
And then my mood when he got the neutral zone
when they were at the one, looked like he objected.
You did did he go offside? And if so, how
frustrating because obviously that's what they were trying to do
is get them to jump offside.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Well, listen, my Mood is a young player, he's a
very very smart player.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
That was not his best play.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
That's that's not indicative of the type of player he is,
and he will learn from that, and honestly, our entire
team will learn from that.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Thanks Jordan.

Speaker 12 (08:21):
Hey, Kevin, and I apologize if you were asked about
this yesterday. On Friday, Miles talked about not wanting to
go through a rebuild again here and you know, I
know you don't want to share any conversations you've had
with them personally, but can you appreciate, you know, his
frustration and I know you would probably always encourage your
players to speak their minds when they have the opportunity.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Yeah, like you said, Tom out any conversations, I'd keep
with our guys, and I have a lot of conversations
with our guys, so they know that they can share
their opinions with me, and it'll always be that way, obviously, Miles.
All of our guys are extremely competitive and they want
to obviously in these games, we want to win this

(09:01):
one versus Miami.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
That's our focus, all.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Right, Kevin.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
That was Ken Dorsey's first game calling plays for Dorian.
What is the natural growth process between play caller and
a brand new quarterback. Should we expect that to be
as good right off the bat?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I think it always is dependent on so many things, Tony.
I think we can play better as a team, we
can play better as an offense starting this week. There's
things that I know we can improve upon. Obviously, when
you have a young quarterback out there for the first
time this season as a starter, you're learning about him
with every rep. You're learning about him with every rep

(09:39):
at practice as well. So we'll take all those learnings
and apply them as we move forward.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
And my other question about dtr is.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
All of us on the outside of.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
The building have our own opinion on dtr Do you
personally know what his ceiling is in the NFL?

Speaker 2 (09:58):
I think with any young player, tell you, Tony, that's
always a something that you're looking towards achieving with your guys.
Young players need reps to get better. I see a
young player in his second year that's getting better with reps.

Speaker 11 (10:13):
Yeah, Kevin.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
Given Dorian's calf injury and Jamis's shoulder injury, would you
maybe try to have him run a little bit less
both both on you know, RPOs and different things like that,
and just scrambling around and putting himself kind of in
harm's way the way he sometimes does.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
I would say it's a little it's early, Mary Kage,
just to see how he progresses through this week and
with this injury. Like I said, he played the entire
game with this injury, so we'll just see how he progresses.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Up next days. Running back to Rome Ford, who discussed
his strong performance on the ground the last two games.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Yeah, Jerome, just wondering how you know, how you feel
about the fact that you have been able to come
up with so many explosive plays over the past few
weeks weeks and really help the team at a time
when you know things really aren't going well in very
many other places.

Speaker 11 (11:10):
I feel like it's just a testament to our offensive
line and the wide receivers blocking on the edge. Without them,
I wouldn't make any explosive plays. So, you know, I
feel like all of us coming together and being able
to hit on the same page consistently back in back
to back weeks. I think we're starting to feel good
about it.

Speaker 8 (11:28):
Yeah, Jeremy, you credit your teammates for helping you get
those explosives, but just for you, We've seen this from
you in the past in spurts, but to be doing
it on a more consistent basis, How good do you
feel out there?

Speaker 4 (11:44):
H feel good?

Speaker 11 (11:47):
Like I said, being I'm sorry, there are big holes
being created. And you know, when when you're able to
have that much space as a runner and you know,
get get running, it's a great thing.

Speaker 8 (12:01):
And I just wanted to ask you about dtr yesterday.
You know, real tough first half there not a whole
lot went right, But then in the second half he
seemed to find a little bit of a rhythm and
the offense started to get it going a little bit,
just you know, someone was in the huddle. What did
you see from dtr and you know, how much do
you think he can kind of build on some of

(12:23):
the positives in that second half?

Speaker 4 (12:26):
You see the resilience in them to fight.

Speaker 11 (12:28):
You know, like you said, we didn't have the best
first half, but you know, coming out there and knowing
we got thirty minutes of football to play, I feel
like we all went out there and gave it everything
we had.

Speaker 7 (12:38):
Hey, Drew, why isn't it important for you to whether
you're considered the number one or the number two? I
know you've talked about it a lot and said that
it doesn't matter, But why doesn't it matter?

Speaker 4 (12:48):
Why doesn't it be a number matter?

Speaker 7 (12:50):
Like if people think you're the number one back?

Speaker 4 (12:53):
You know what I mean, I don't think it matters.

Speaker 11 (12:56):
Only thing that matters is what's going on inside the
building here and you know who coach put out on
the field and making sure that you know, we've honed
in and.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
You know, study the game plan and we go out
there and we do our job.

Speaker 7 (13:09):
I mean a lot of guys would care about that
right that they were considered the number one, But it
doesn't seem to be that important to you. Why why
don't Why don't you think it's that important?

Speaker 11 (13:20):
The most important thing at the end of the game
is a W. And no matter who's the number one,
number two, as long as you did your job to
contribute to that W. I don't think one or two matters.

Speaker 7 (13:32):
And then that catch yesterday where DJR scrambled, laughed and
threw it back to you. Kevin raved about it. What
did you see on that play?

Speaker 11 (13:40):
We go over scrambled Jill after practice all the time,
and just making sure that I'm in position, and I've
seen him look my way, and I know I know
the type of guy DTR is. He'll get it to you,
he'll make a play, So I just made sure I
was ready to catch the ball.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, Jeram.

Speaker 8 (13:56):
Obviously this season hasn't gone the way you guys, hauld hope.
You've got to games remaining against Miami and Baltimore. Just
you know, what's the mindset and approaches you guys, uh,
you know, try and end what was a difficult year
on a positive note.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
Continue to fight.

Speaker 11 (14:13):
We know those are two teams that are still in
hunt for the playoffs, and we're gonna go out there,
we gonna try to win games, and well, you know,
Miami to hunt for the playoffs, so you know, we're
going out there, try to win games, play hard and
send them home like we going home.

Speaker 8 (14:28):
And and just you know, how has or I should say,
how have you seen Kevin kind of handle handle this?
You know, when when he came here, things really seemed
to change around for the franchise, albeit maybe not smoothly
with all the you know, quarterback injuries and stuff over
the years. But just how have you seen Kevin handle
the challenges and the difficulties you guys have gone through.

Speaker 11 (14:51):
Yeah, and does everything like a pro. You know, he
make sure we get our work in. He keeps us motivated,
keeps us going, keeps us fighting, and I think he's
done a great job from my point of view.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
Hey, drum, Kevin said that David Nijoku had a knee
injury yesterday, he was getting an MRI today. How have
you seen him kind of fight through the string of
injuries he's had this year? What kind of loss if
he's not able to play with you guys in the
last couple of games.

Speaker 11 (15:19):
He's a real fighter, He's trying to do everything he
can to get on the field.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
I can see him in the training room.

Speaker 11 (15:23):
It's frustrated for him to not be on the field
and you know, be out there and make the plays.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
But you know, when you're out there, like that.

Speaker 11 (15:29):
Screen you saw yesterday, he's able to make plays and
be a big help for our team.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
Finally, linebacker Jordan Hicks talked about how special it was
to see Miles Garrett reach one hundred career sacks.

Speaker 6 (15:39):
Oh, hi, Jordan, I was just wondering, forgive me, if
you were asked this last night. I'm not really sure
if you were not, but I'm just wondering, how did
you feel about some of the remarks that Miles said
on Friday, if you were aware of them. When he

(15:59):
basically said that he's going to need to see some
kind of a plan for winning now for him to
want to be back here, and he cited that he
seemed to be alluding to the fact that, you know,
you guys as a defense or defenders or team leaders
are kind of in this thing together in your feeling

(16:20):
that you would like to see, you know, just what
the plan is going forward. Just wondering your thoughts on that.

Speaker 13 (16:27):
Yeah, obviously, Miles, you know, speaks from the heart.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
You know.

Speaker 14 (16:35):
I think he does a great job.

Speaker 13 (16:36):
But I can't tell you what's going on in Miles's head, right,
All I know is what I'm you know, what's in
my head, you know, And that's really all I can
comment on. Miles has been a leader on this team
for years, is held in the highest regard amongst his peers,

(17:01):
not just on this team but around the league. And
coming here, it's been a pleasure to get to know him,
uh and watch him firsthand. You know, he's the type
of team or he's the type of player that you
want on a team. He's a type of leader you
want on a team, you know. And you know, like
I said, Myles, he's going to tell you he's gonna

(17:23):
shoot you straight, and he's going to speak from the heart.

Speaker 15 (17:25):
Yeah, Jordan, Just to follow up on that, what about
the fact that he notches his one hundredth career sack
yesterday and and just what it's like as his teammate
to see a guy reach that accomplishment and reach it
as quickly as he has in his career.

Speaker 13 (17:40):
Yeah, And and what's so special about it is you
watch just about every play he's getting double teamed right,
the guys relentless.

Speaker 14 (17:50):
You know, there's play after play where he's.

Speaker 13 (17:54):
He's you know, not just defeat defeating the chip, but
defeating the tap and then get in the back on
a late chip like it's he's he's bringing all attention.
So you know, to see him firsthand, like I said,
has been a pleasure. And you know, I've I've played
a lot of football.

Speaker 14 (18:14):
I've seen a lot of things.

Speaker 13 (18:15):
You know, what he's been able to accomplish and what
he does on a on a weekly basis as special I.

Speaker 9 (18:22):
Mean along those lines.

Speaker 15 (18:23):
Have you ever seen an edge dresser get or played
with the guy who gets that much attention the way
that Miles seems to draw attention, because even looking at
other top edg dressers now it seems like sometimes he's
dealing with things that aren't.

Speaker 13 (18:36):
Really yeah no, and and it's you know, it's one
of those things. Is he's it's where we are what
we are, right, Schwartz's defense is what it is. You know,
we we we're gonna apply pressure, but we if our
pass rush is working right, we're gonna we're gonna drop
back and we're gonna make you make you, you know,

(18:56):
have to figure it out. And Miles is number ninety five.
Everybody knows that he's gonna be on the field in
those big third downs and you know if he if
we move him around, they're gonna move around to to
you know, make sure that he's not being disruptive and
and you know, as a linebacker, you know, the attention

(19:18):
that he brings uh to a game plan helps my position,
helps me play better, helps everybody on the team play better.
So yeah, you know, I've never personally seen it. You know,
I'm not complaining about it. He's he's still getting his sacks,
he's still doing his thing, and you know it's helping
everybody else on the on the defense.

Speaker 14 (19:39):
It's it's special to play with somebody like that, for sure.

Speaker 7 (19:42):
Can I ask you one more Miles thing, Jordan? Sure,
what did you did on that play where he chased
down Joey yesterday on the sideline? I'm just curious what
your view was live and then when you watch it
on film. It just seemed kind of special to when
you watch it.

Speaker 14 (19:57):
Yeah, live, I didn't see I didn't see it.

Speaker 13 (20:00):
I heard the crowd, right, I think everybody wanted to, Uh,
you know, latehead or two feet out, personal foul, whatever.
But watching it on film, obviously you see him giving
relentless effort, jumping, you know, to make the tackle and
then rolling, spinning into the heaters and the heaters falling over,

(20:21):
and you know, it's it just it just is a
testament of who he is as a player and who
is as a person.

Speaker 7 (20:27):
And then you've known Rodney for a while, right, and
now he's got two games left. I was talking him
about that last week. Just how much haes that come up?
And how do you kind of reflect on what he's
done in his thirteen years?

Speaker 14 (20:42):
Yeah, man, it does. It comes up quite a bit.

Speaker 13 (20:45):
I have a lot of you know, conversations with rod
and private conversations, and you know, we're both older guys
in the league, and I you know, I try to
pick his brain. I try to hear, you know, his
story and where he's at mentally, and he's he's you know,
he is enjoying every moment, trying to just do everything
he can to leave it all out there on the field, right.

(21:05):
And you know, I think about in my own situation
and in our situation as a team, it's easy to
feel sorry for yourself in these moments, it's easy to
look around and you know, try to take the easy route.
And then you look at a guy like Rod who
knows he only has two games left. Who is you know,

(21:28):
fighting tooth and nail to leave it all out there
on the field, to be in the right spot, to
know his the opportunities that are coming, you know, are
are dwindling.

Speaker 4 (21:39):
Right.

Speaker 13 (21:40):
If he doesn't make a play, he may not get
that opportunity again to make them make it the next time.

Speaker 14 (21:45):
Right.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
So, just.

Speaker 13 (21:49):
The ability to look at somebody like that, you know,
who's who's one of your leaders on the team, and
and and see his mentality going through this situation, you know,
has been encouraging to me, and I think for a
lot of guys on the team.

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Okay, Jordan, we're three and twelve. Let's step outside of
that box for one moment. You're in the middle of
a defense that has defended Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and
Lamar Jackson. I want you to rank those quarterbacks one, two, three.

Speaker 14 (22:21):
Why would I do that.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Kind of question is.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
That you've already played them.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
You're not gonna play them again.

Speaker 14 (22:31):
I've played them, I've played them many times over the years.

Speaker 4 (22:33):
They're all great quarterbacks.

Speaker 13 (22:34):
And you know, they all have superpowers in their own ways, right, Like,
they're all different.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
I don't, I don't, I don't.

Speaker 13 (22:42):
You can't necessarily rate them one, two, three, I think
they all. If you want a runner, you go Lamar, right.
If you want somebody who can create, you go Pat
you know, if you want somebody who kind of can escape,
and and you know, plays with a little bit of
of savvy, right, a little bit in the pocket, a
little bit of savvy, you go, you go Joe. Like,

(23:03):
they're all great, they're all quarterbacks, and you know, in
their own respects.
