Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this week seventeen Friday edition of the From
the Podium podcast. I'm Gabe Klea. Browns wrapped their final
practice of the week in preparation for the Miami Dolphins.
On this episode, you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski,
wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator Chad O'shay, linebackers
coach Jason Tarver, and defensive end Miles Garrett. Head coach
Kevin Stefanski will lead us off today and he gave
(00:26):
his final thoughts on the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Okay, great challenge this week, unique challenge with this group,
the things that they do on their offensive side of
the ball, with the pre snap motion and the speed. Defensively,
I think they do a great job in a variety
of ways. But they're big and long upfront with great length.
They've got great movement, a bunch of different things they
can throw at you. It's a good special teams group
(00:51):
coach really well, so a group that certainly we respect,
and then we have to go play our best brand
of football to go find a way to win in
front of our fans. We're excited about the opportunity to
go play one last time down there on the lake
in front of our fans. But with that, I'll take
any questions.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Kimra was over hurt against the Bengles. Yes, but Jamis
is questionable. If he's okay, will he be the number two?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Yes? If he's okay, yeah, still working through that.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
Who will be a kicker Sunday?
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Dustin?
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Why I go with him after giving him, you know,
the week off when you had to squad.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
Kicker a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, I think regardless if we have a practice squad
kicker on the roster or not. Really just uh, he's
our kicker, like I've told you guys. Uh, He's gonna
continue to work through this like he does, like any
player works through technique things. He's working very hard and
he kicked it really well today. I expect him to
kick it really well on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
With the three guys who are out, we have to
use IR to bring anybody up.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Use Uh, are any of those guys that bring anybody up?
I don't believe so.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
And Dustin, it seems like like the bye week, you know,
with him sitting out, thought that was pretty confident that
he was going to give back to.
Speaker 5 (02:06):
Form and just didn't.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
I think with any position, it doesn't matter if it's kicker,
if it's offensive line, linebacker, you're constantly working on your technique.
That's no different here with a veteran that's working on
his craft getting that swing grooved. Obviously it didn't hit
the ball how he wanted to the other day, but
he continues to work at it and we'll, like I
(02:28):
told him, we'll can support him and we'll work through
it together.
Speaker 7 (02:31):
I know he doesn't have.
Speaker 8 (02:32):
A game stats, but how did Dorian come through with
the cap and everything, and how.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
He looked like had has looked good?
Speaker 5 (02:39):
Kind of we don't always see this kind of patience
with kickers. So where does your obviously in that great
your last or so that's probably part of But where.
Speaker 9 (02:46):
Does where does that believe in Dustin come from?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, demonstrated ability. He's a veteran. I've seen him do
it for us. I've seen him do it in his career.
Like a lot of kickers, sometimes.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
You have a you got.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
To go through it a little bit, but doesn't change
how hard he's working to get through this. But yeah,
veteran guy who's who's seen a lot in his career.
Speaker 9 (03:09):
Yeah, what can you guys do this week to kind
of make Dorian's life for a little easier so you.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Can get into the flow of the game a little
faster than he did last year.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
I think it's it's more incumbent on the team to
start fast. Obviously, that helps your quarterback when you can
put some points on the board, you know, early in
a game and and not.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Put yourself in a hole early.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
I think that certainly contributes to how you play as
an offense.
Speaker 8 (03:35):
Kevian, he's really got the ability to pull it and
go on those RPOs.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
What did you think of his decisions.
Speaker 8 (03:40):
On that last week and what kind of a you
know where does that give you guys going forward?
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, you know, it's a real threat when you have
that quarterback back there. You know, Kevin Rodgers, our coach here,
he always says, when the quarterback hands it off, there's
that's now eleven on ten. You know, if you don't
have a real viable guy, And with Dorian it's really
an eleven on eleven football. They have to account for
him really in all those run schemes, and that's like
a lot of quarterbacks in this league. I think you're
(04:06):
seeing guys that are very viable threats in the run game,
and it certainly contributes to run game success.
Speaker 9 (04:12):
Ken, I know you're on this year and Joel said
he's not thinking about next year, but regard us what happens, Like,
what has he just meant to this building to you
these last five years?
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, you know, obviously I wasn't here for the beginning
part of his career, but just seeing him these last
five seasons, first of all, just talk about I'll talk
about the person first. Just an amazing person, the guy
I rely on a ton when talking about things that
have to do with this football team, and just the
way he leads. I'm always leaning on him. The player,
(04:43):
you know, looks like a Hall of Fame career to me.
You know, I don't think he's I'm hoping he's not.
This is not his last few games. I think he's
got a lot left in the tank. And I say
that just that this is a really, really good football player,
and I've seen some really good ones that he's he's
right up there.
Speaker 9 (04:58):
Is he likes Steve Hutchinson or when they different.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
You know, the different players.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Steve was much more of the gap scheme, downhill Maller
quote unquote, and I think Joel's just so athletic the
things that he's been able to do over the course
of his career. Never gets in a bad spot. He's
always moving his guy and has recoverability to get to
the second level.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
But he's an incredible athlete.
Speaker 10 (05:22):
Kevin two is one of the better quarterbacks that have
been one of the better quarterbacks in.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
The league against pressure. You know what what what do
you see when you watch him?
Speaker 10 (05:30):
With him in terms of that that helps him, you know,
kind of handle the pressure.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
You know, I'd say the ball comes out so fast.
I think that's what helps the pressure. It's hard to uh,
you know, you can blitz him and sometimes you get there.
Sometimes that ball is you know, whistling out of there
because that's just how fast they play, and he makes
really really quick decisions and he has a very very
quick release.
Speaker 9 (05:52):
How much pressure is that put on your secondary when
he's getting it out so fast and there isn't a
lot of time to send that pressure?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, I think they certainly this scheme puts pressure on
every part of your defense. It's not just the secondary.
I think everybody contributes to trying to slow this group down.
I think they do a great job getting the ball
in the perimeter in a variety of ways, run game, screen, game,
you name it. Then they do a really good job
work in the middle field as well.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Where was said that in the protocol and does it
at this point? Since he's out this game makes sense
just to shut.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Them down for the rest of the I'm not going there.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I'm really just focused on where he is right now,
and he's continuing to progress.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
How do you coach up Dorian to still be aggressive
and use all of his skills but also try to
stay interception.
Speaker 11 (06:35):
For you this game?
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Sure, I mean I think it goes back to Mary
Kay being smart and aggressive. You don't want to just
be conservative for the sake of being conservative, But you
have to understand how important the ball is in these games,
how important possession is in these games. So still continue
to play his style, make sure he's doing everything in
his power to move the football for our football team
(06:56):
and score points, but at the same time not letting
them get their hands on it.
Speaker 7 (07:00):
Have to even said, who do you need to step
up for Dorian in this game?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
I think it's always a group effort in that regard.
Mary Kay, I think we really trust our group. We
trust the receivers, we trust the tight ends that we
have up. Uh, we got a good group of running
backs up. So the quarterback has to you know, deliver
the ball based on what the coverage is dictating, and
we trust the guys that that the ball's going to Kevin.
Speaker 10 (07:23):
And I saw that Mike said that Anthony Walker's not
gonna play Sunday for you. See that for you just
obviously no way Anthony from this time of year. Disappointing
not to get the you know.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
He injured. Okay, I didn't know that, got it.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
I just said that he was.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
He's Okay, you know, a guy I think very highly of.
I'm regretting letting him sit in all those quarterback meetings
over the years. Uh He's he's popped in there and
sat in there for many many meetings, and I'm regretting
that fact. But he's a he's one of my favorites,
just a quintessential pro. He's he's he's the guy in
(08:07):
the middle of the defense. He's the guy, you know,
in the middle of the locker room, just at the
center of everything. I think he's he's made plays when
he's out there on the football field, but just the
impact that he has in the building has been pretty incredible.
Speaker 9 (08:20):
When guys are like that, Kevin, I mean, I don't
think he's the son of a coach. Are they generally
always that way?
Speaker 10 (08:25):
Or do you guys kind.
Speaker 9 (08:25):
Of as they get into pro routine and do they
kind of grow into that.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I think the son of a coach certainly has a
lot to do with it, and and Anthony has talked
a lot about that. But he's he's a gym rat.
He just he loves the game. And again, just his
thirst for knowledge. You can ask the quarterbacks. He would
pop in there and sit in there and just listen,
(08:51):
not not really ask questions, but just hear what was
being talked about, and just he's he's a cerebral player.
You know, you so often hear quarterbacks being talked about
being when you're the middle linebacker and you're in the
nerve center, you have to be a cerebral and he
certainly is.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Wide Receiver coach and passing game coordinator Chad Owshay talked
about the emergence of Jerry Judy, emergence.
Speaker 7 (09:11):
Of Jerry and just eclipsing a thousand yards and putting
together in the nice season that he has.
Speaker 11 (09:18):
Yeah, Jerry's had an excellent year. I'm not surprised by
that and his production on the field. You know, I've
seen these things in the off season, the way he
was in the off season, the way he approached every day.
You know, he's he's got great intelligence as a player.
He's very instinctive. He works hard, and you know, I
(09:38):
think he's put the team first and everything he's done.
I'm very happy for Jerry's success, and I really believe
it didn't happen by accident. I think it happened through
hard work and it's who Jerry is and I'm grateful
that he's on our football team.
Speaker 8 (09:53):
Out of these last few weeks, I mean to know,
you don't want to talk specifics about injuries, but I
guess just how important would have to get him back
and get a couple more looks at him, because it
seemed like he was ascending before the concussion year.
Speaker 11 (10:06):
Yes, Cedric, prior to the concussion was doing some great
things for our offense.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
He was really improving.
Speaker 11 (10:13):
You know, again, another player that I thought that this
is this is how it would go, just because of
the things that I have seen, you know, in the
meeting room and on the practice field, and he's certainly
made the most of his opportunities.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
You know.
Speaker 11 (10:25):
Unfortunately, right now he's in a situation where he's not
out there with us. You know, I think the NFL
and our medical staff does an excellent job in regards
to the concussion protocol and making sure that players are
exactly you know, healthy and in the best condition they
can when they come back. So, you know, respect the
process there. But Cedric prior to the concussion has really
(10:47):
done a great job for us, and I'm very excited
about his future.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
He's talked about seeing more double teams since he's been
on this really good streak. So how do you deal
with that with him? What are the coach points there
to whatever? I guess, beat the doubles and stay positive.
Speaker 11 (11:04):
Yeah, with Jerry's success that he had over that, you know,
several weeks, you know, we saw defenses obviously trying to
take him away, and you know, obviously it's our job
as coaches to try to look at those things of
how they're going to play us schematically in regards to
coverage specifically, and try to put him in position you know,
(11:24):
we've asked Jerry to try not to do too much,
you know, and I think that's one of the biggest
mistakes that receivers who are given attention, let's call it
double teams and maybe additional coverage or help that they're
providing defensively, is to try to do too much as
a player and then just not do your job. So
I think that a lot goes into that, from game
(11:46):
planning to you know, who we're playing, and I think
the biggest thing is just for Jerry to go out
there and continue just to do the things we're asking
him and and not to just overthink some of that.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Yesterday, he was still getting open despite some of that extra.
Speaker 11 (12:02):
Attention against ININCINNEDI Yeah, there were times that you know,
there was attention devoted to him, maybe an additional player,
that he was able still to be open. So you know,
it's again I thought Jerry is does a great job
of studying. He spends a lot of time outside the
meeting room watching film, so he's he uses that to
(12:24):
his advantage, you know, and I think he's a really smart,
instinctive football player. He understands what the defense is trying
to do to him, and I think that if anybody
can get open versus a couple of guys, you know,
Jerry can.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Obviously you knew what you were.
Speaker 9 (12:40):
Getting in Jerry, But has anything surprised you in the
year or so, You're not quite a year, but the
time you spent with him here.
Speaker 11 (12:47):
Yeah, I mean we were really excited once when we
acquired Jerry, but to see what he's accomplished, you know,
and this is you know, been his best year and
very proud of that. Again, I didn't happen by I
saw this kind of coming, just the way he was
working in the building. He does an excellent job. He's
a great communicator, he communicates well with the coaching staff,
(13:10):
with his teammates. Again, a very smart player who takes
advantage of his opportunities.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
So, you know, to say that, you.
Speaker 11 (13:20):
Know, I saw this coming, I really did see. My
expectation for him was very high, and it continued to
be very high because I think a lot of them
as a player.
Speaker 7 (13:30):
As a stat that I'm sure he wished you didn't have.
Last time I checked, I think it might have been
last week that he was first in terms of passes
intended for him that were intercepted. So is that somewhat
a function of maybe said not being in the game,
David not being in the game, and maybe he's getting
(13:50):
some balls that should go to like a taller receiver.
Speaker 12 (13:53):
Or how's that breaking out?
Speaker 11 (13:54):
Ye specifically talking about some of the turnovers that we've
had on the targets that Elijah has been I think
that ball security, I think that a lot of people
sharing that responsibility, to include us as coaches, myself, whether
it's a certain technique that we're coaching on that particular play,
but I think that we are we are all responsible
(14:14):
for it, you know, and then a lot goes into
protecting the ball. It's definitely an emphasis point that we've
tried to make here in the last couple of weeks
because some of the turnovers that we had, you know,
but Elijah has really done a good job of trying
to be very detailed in his route running. We place
him at different positions across the formation, and a lot
of times he's right in the middle of it. You know,
(14:35):
he's he's the target, and you know, it's not it
doesn't fall all in Elijah that we've had, you know,
lack of success on some of these balls that have
been targeted to him. He certainly has produced on some
others as well. So I don't, you know, I don't
think it's just one person. I really don't. I think that,
you know, having Cedric in there, it's not like that's
(14:59):
you know, really affecting that that much. I just feel like,
you know, Elijah's continued to be a detailed player for us.
We all share in the responsibility of ball security, and
we'll continue to do that.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
We're unit could grow with story.
Speaker 11 (15:19):
And it's a great question because you know, when you
have a change of quarterback, there's always some learning that
goes on.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
They've worked really hard. We're gonna go out there today
and we're going.
Speaker 11 (15:31):
To throw routes on air, and we're gonna work hard
just fundamentally at being on the same page with them.
But it takes time, it really does, to just to
get on the same page with the quarterbacks. He's done
a great job with us and and his communication. Hey,
here's what I need out of you guys, and we
certainly are going to try to be there for him.
And I always tell the receivers with a new quarterback,
(15:52):
the most important thing is let's just fall back on
doing our job, our assignment exactly the way we're asked
to do the coaches when we put it in the
meeting room. Let's go out to the field and let's
be there for the quarterback by just doing our job
exactly right. So we're going to continue to try to
support him and and and allow him to be the
best version of our himself. But for him to do that,
(16:13):
we just need to do our job really well.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
I asked Jerry.
Speaker 7 (16:18):
About this the other day, that Dorian's passes some kind
sometimes come in with a little extra heat on them,
and he admitted they do come in a little hot,
but still catchable. I'm just wondering, is that something that
your guys have to adjust to or am I not
even seeing that correctly or what's the Yeah.
Speaker 11 (16:37):
You know, I think that every quarterback has a different,
you know, way in which they throw, a different spin
to the ball, a different velocity. And what I tell
those guys our group from day one receivers is I
don't care who's out there throwing it. It's our job to,
you know, to adjust to that ball, maybe if it's
a different type of football throwing, but it's our job
to get open and catch the ball, and that's what
(16:58):
we're asking hard guys to do. I don't look that
much into that. I know, certainly the guys catching it
probably can tell you more about the different throws in
those things. But you know, my as a coach, when
I'm evaluating on is the ball on the ground or not?
Do you catch it or not? So that'll continue to
be the focus for me on that.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
I about the adjustment to a new quarterback, is there
another element to that when it's a different style quarterback
where Jamis was more in the pocket where Dorian is
you know, outside scramble.
Speaker 11 (17:28):
And I can think, yeah, I do think that. You know,
with you can take any player across the roster and say, hey,
everybody's different to each other. You know, everybody's got different
skill sets. So certainly true of the quarterback position too,
and just the different styles that they may bring to
the table. But there's so many things, like looking at
Dorian that he does well from an extended play, like
we're emphasizing right now, let's do a great job in
(17:50):
the extended plays, the off schedule plays where you know
Dorian can do a good job of escape and get
out of the pocket and must be productive. And I
look back at when Jamis was in there, he did
a great job on in that area too, So there
are some similarities that we're trying to benefit from as well.
You know, Jamis was a player that could extend the
play in different ways. It might be not all the
(18:11):
way to the sidelines, but he could step up and
have great vision down the field and find us and
throw us open. So, you know, as different as there
may be some things, I think there's some similarities too
that we're really benefiting from. And that would be one
area that I think that both these quarterbacks have done
a great job of has given us opportunities down the
field when the play maybe gets off schedule.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Linebackers coach Jason Tarvar spoke on the play of his
veterans like Jordan Hicks.
Speaker 7 (18:38):
Well, I know you can't give us really necessarily a
health update on j Okay.
Speaker 12 (18:43):
No, that's really not your place, but.
Speaker 7 (18:46):
Can you give us any idea at all? I mean,
are you in contact with them? Is he in good
spirits or is there anything that you can share.
Speaker 13 (18:53):
Yeah, we text all the time and talk as much
as we can. He and the guy in linebackers have
their little texts going too, so he's involved. He you know,
when we when it gets closer to game time, as
any of us would be, he gets excited and you know,
he stays into our linebacker things where I send out
the pieces of the game plan and comments and he's
(19:16):
even offered some coaching points to some of our other
younger linebackers, which is outstanding, just which is good and
says what he sees. So you know, we're all just
rooting for him to be able to figure out everything
that it needs to be figured out with like you said,
with the UH, with his travel schedule to see different
(19:36):
doctors and things, just making sure he's good but good
spirits not hurting all that's good.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Him.
Speaker 8 (19:43):
Now, it just seems like Jordan at least has been
healthy down this stretch of the season and he's been
playing really well.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
Just how impressed have you been with him?
Speaker 8 (19:51):
And I mean, he just seems like his effort is
one hundred type of signs all the time.
Speaker 13 (19:55):
Well, I tease, but I'm not really teasing the linebackers
when I say, I'm the hardest greater of the coaches,
and Jordan's grades have been some of the highest that
I've given in not only will we grate him in
certain ways like just did you do right on the play?
And his are really high there, but also factor grades
(20:16):
meaning if the play comes to you, do you make it?
His factor grades have been really, really high. So just
proud of him for doing that. He's doing a great
job of working with who's ever in there with him,
which is one of our challenges right now to both
Our challenge as a linebacker group is it doesn't matter
who's playing around you.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
You're one of eleven.
Speaker 13 (20:36):
Do your job, and our job is to be the
nerve center, like Coach Horse says, and Jordan's doing a
great job of that. Help him with when my mood's
in there with him or Devin or Winston or whoever's
in He's done a great job of tying everything together.
And he's impressive in that. I know I'm going along
because I'm excited for Jordan, but to get his body
(20:57):
back to be able to do what he's doing at
this level is amazing, and he works and he's everything
is just a great process to make the play and
then go on to the next play.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Like everybody that fills in for you. But how much
do you think you've missed jay Ocaine, just everything that
he can do schematically and all that kind of thing.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
You know, for the last whatever two months.
Speaker 13 (21:21):
Well, I think where Jeremiah went, and we spoke about
this a little bit, is he really went to making
himself the every down linebacker, having the headset, making the calls,
to saying, hey, whoever Miles move over or whatever it is.
Speaker 12 (21:41):
He went to that point.
Speaker 13 (21:42):
And when when players get to that point, it's very
exciting for a coach because there wasn't anything that he
can't do, and there wasn't anything he can't do athletically,
of course, but he had taken himself. His preparation and
his performance is is just going like this. So anytime
(22:03):
any player gets to that level, you're gonna miss that
because he.
Speaker 12 (22:07):
Was playing at that high level, especially those lives. He's
just going like this.
Speaker 13 (22:11):
It was just it's just the progression, like all the
things we talked about with you know, the two things
that I said every time I came up here, his
body and then going playing and playing out to make
the next play the best way. He's doing that. So yeah,
you're you're gonna miss that. But you know, you also
know in this business. We need everybody and our guys
(22:32):
in that room. We've taken us as a challenge and
we've stepped up.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
My mood jumps off side last week at the one
yard line, Kevin said, it was so uncharacteristic for him.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
Like how do you deal with afterwards.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Like with the conversations like with him, and you know
should even obviously should have known better because they're trying
to get him draw off Like.
Speaker 4 (22:53):
What you telling them?
Speaker 13 (22:54):
Well, yeah, and anytime you flinch on defense, they're gonna
call you. They're gonna stand up and touch you. So
that's the thing is like you know, he was conscious
of the situation and everything like that, but you can't
get that cute near the line of scrimmage. So with
any young player and mood, I'm proud of where he's going.
He's doing a great job. And we've spoken about this
(23:17):
with jeremash progression in the past is you get into
the new environments and you have to go through that.
You have to go into each That's his first time playing.
He played a little bit down there last year, but
meaningful snaps on the road first.
Speaker 12 (23:30):
Time backed up.
Speaker 13 (23:32):
Okay, cool, and like Kevin said, he's going to learn
from it, for sure. That's the best part. One of
the best things about my mood is once he experiences that,
he goes, Okay, I got this, I'm walking in and
he really is a one time correction linebacker player, and
we're proud of him for that, and we'll keep him going.
Speaker 12 (23:47):
But that's all you do because if.
Speaker 13 (23:50):
I'm preaching you got to go to the next play
as fast as possible. I gotta be able to do
that too. Now you might get a little hand gesture
on the sideline from me, like what the heck are
you doing? Or you know, we have the hand signals
that we use. Okay, so you might see the guy
in the orange shirt do a little acting job with that.
I'm on the next player right away, and we coach
it that way. Hey, this happened, all right, Cool, What
(24:12):
do we gotta do next? Where are we going? Let's
get this done?
Speaker 12 (24:15):
And he got better playing as that game went on.
Speaker 8 (24:19):
Devin coming in, just what have you guys seen from
him this year and knowing some of the adversity he
faced earlier in his career, or how he's kind of
embraced the.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
World he's been given.
Speaker 12 (24:28):
Here, I'm saying proud a lot. Maybe it's because it's
Christmas time.
Speaker 13 (24:31):
Or something, but we're really proud of Devin as he
has given himself to the system. He has hadn't been
in this type of a system before, and he's just
gotten better and better at it.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
And you can see him.
Speaker 13 (24:42):
He's tackling really well, he's edges, getting off of blocks,
he's playing, he's doing what my hand Jesure was for Jeremiah.
He's getting better every week, and so we are. I'm
really proud of him because that isn't always The easiest
thing is get into a new place, thirdeen system and
then just to be like, all right, I got your coach,
(25:03):
and then just same thing. Oh yeah, coach told me
to be wider all the time. This happens and then
he does it, and then he makes plays doing it.
But his tackling in the hole and chasing whoever has
the ball has really helped us, and we need him
to continue to do that against this team because they
have some speed.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
Speed. Jim was talking about it yesterday.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
How does that make life really difficult for your guys
from a chain to the rest.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
Of the guys.
Speaker 13 (25:29):
Well, yeah, not only the speed, how this system uses
their players. I have experience coaching with coach Mike and
Kyle at the forty nine ers and how they they
do a great job of blurring positions and moving people
to get angles on you, so that not only the
speed of the players when they have the ball, but
the speed of the motions, the speed of their formations.
(25:51):
We have to be able to move and leverage things
quickly and effectively, whether we're bumping things or locking things
or whatever. Doing that's the They do a great job
of that, and that's where we're gonna have to function
and it will come right back to that next place.
Speaker 12 (26:07):
The best play we gotta We'll have to have our
mind right.
Speaker 13 (26:09):
But they do a nice job of using that speed
in that all right, there's a quick throw over here
to one of their fast guys. If he doesn't have it,
they spread you to the other side and you'll see
a lot of times where the quarterback will look, look,
and then.
Speaker 12 (26:21):
Just throw it wide. So they're like people call them checkdowns.
A lot of times.
Speaker 13 (26:26):
It's like touchdown checkdown in the West Coast offense where
the vertical and then the checkdown's right in front of
the quarterback. They do a good job of spreading the
field for their checkdowns, so specifically scheme wise, that can
not only can the quarterback see it, but that can
get their speed guys in space, so their their systems
a little different and how they distribute their speed.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
He is as as we're receiving that.
Speaker 12 (26:53):
Yeah, he's really good. They've done a nice job.
Speaker 13 (26:56):
If you look just I was talking a little bit
about blurring the position. They're all kind of built the same,
and they're fast, and then they can all run all
the routes. It's similar to what uh, you know we
faced last year with forty nine ers or or who
in that they blur everybody can run all the routes,
and so with him, he's got good hands and he's fast,
(27:17):
so they blur the line of that. So again where
they put him in the formations and how quickly they're
moving things.
Speaker 12 (27:22):
We've got to have the correct leverage to send it
to our help.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
Finally, reigning Defensive Player of the Year Miles Garrett took
questions on some personal milestones he is approaching.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
Giving it a couple of weeks now seeing what he.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Questions.
Speaker 6 (27:50):
Damn good, so on the best at this generation he's
been U's been as healthy as you know any of
the elite and top guys and play perform an elite level.
You know for all the years that I've been here
in Cident, so I have massive amount of respect. You know,
he's He's shown that he could play across the line
from the tack of the guard, you know, even if
no center. I've seen him take stamps, so you know,
(28:12):
he's definitely one of the best at I've seen what was.
Speaker 8 (28:14):
Seem for just like as a leader to set this team,
you want want this techners.
Speaker 6 (28:19):
Just complete consistency. You know, whether it's uh it's demeanor
or no performance, you know exactly what.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
You're gonna get out of him.
Speaker 6 (28:28):
And uh know he's spent the uh the foundation for
that room, you know since Joe left, and he's been
a a great example for the young guys.
Speaker 14 (28:36):
How much would you want him to pay back the.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Next year to keep I want him to do the
best for his family and his body. At the end
of the day, you know, the game's gonna games gonna end.
I want him to you know, feel good bending over
you know, picking up his kids and you know, going
to the park or to school, whether it is you know,
all those things matter, you know a little bit more
than you know the game that we play. But uh,
(29:00):
as a football player, absolutely, I want I'm back and
the guy's great. Since your comments last week, have you
had any discussions with.
Speaker 11 (29:08):
What I do it, you know, kind of keeping players
aligned with you?
Speaker 5 (29:12):
A few a few? Do you feel like any kind
of things?
Speaker 6 (29:19):
I mean, we still have room for discussion at the thin
of the year as well.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
Do you think your teammates like that you kind of
what public would think, cause they're thinking the.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
Same thing New York.
Speaker 6 (29:35):
I think they they wanna you know, I know what's
coming next as well. So I haven't really uh heard
too many people don't speak up on whether you know
they they liked uh no mine my comments or not.
Think everyone is kind of, you know, feeling the same way,
but I don't. I'm I'm not gonna assume and you know,
(29:55):
I don't have my answer at the end of the year,
I'm be sold to older. I just we just gotta
finish through.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
When you when you talked to you last night, you
mentioned that the section stations would take place here after
the season.
Speaker 14 (30:07):
So I was just wondering, did somebody you know, did
Jimmy or you or somebody that would you know how
approach you to maybe from China, I initiate in your
believe version of the discussion.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
I wouldn't say initiate an earlier person in discussion. I
just wanted to see where my my head was at
and what I was thinking, and uh, you know, just
you know, trying to keep no things in the house
in house.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Twenty nine out of twenty ninth's house significant to you,
significant for y'all, Like keep on telling me I'm not
young anymore?
Speaker 6 (30:44):
I uh, I guess they can then what they said
I said, like your golden, golden birth there. But the
end of the day s excess another day, I feel
it to. It's more of a day to celebrate the
people who helped me see this twenty ninth birthday. So uh,
I'm glad to have my family around, my friends around,
(31:05):
and being able to show 'em how much you know,
I appreciate and you don't care for them. That's much
more special than celebrating myself.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
What would getting that teen sacks mean to you?
Speaker 3 (31:17):
And he the only one to do that.
Speaker 6 (31:20):
Work street games, I think that'd be pretty damn cool,
you know, stand alone and in that regard and uh again,
you know something that my my dad went back on
and be appreciative of, you know, big on making him
proud cause you know he's a big football guy and
you know he his drive and love of the game,
you know, became my own. You know that's all start dump.
(31:41):
So it's it's pretty cool to be able to, you know,
give back.
Speaker 8 (31:44):
Can you imagine point that out to your record potential
every word to better research.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
That on your own.
Speaker 6 (31:48):
Any record that I'm close to, I get a little
so yeah, he he he let me know. I'm I'm
not really too tapped in on you know, all that stuff,
but he lets me know pretty early. Pay who's his
fair favorite player? I can accounting male blunt?
Speaker 5 (32:12):
How hard?
Speaker 9 (32:14):
How hard is it to.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
To pursue a personal goal within the scope of a
game and do it also within the scope of fatigue.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
I mean, I do my my job.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
I'm one of eleven, so.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
My job is rushing password you know when they's when
they're throwing the ball about. I can't you know, go
out of my assignment to to chase anything that you
know that's just for me or just a individual's goal
at the end of the day and I'm if it's
there for me and I can, I can rush and
make them play. Actually gonna do my thing, but that's
not in the cars. If they choose to go go
about a different way, and and uh, you know, my
(32:51):
responsibility is something different. I'm not gonna go, you know,
against the grain to try try to chase something.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
Now, I'm gonna do with what it takes to warn do.
Just put me back to the com a.
Speaker 6 (33:03):
Was there a moment where in this story you look
kind of sleepy but your right. Uh yeah, that's how
I felt earlier, I want to say all season, but
you know, earliest today at least.
Speaker 15 (33:17):
Going to your Have you always felt like you had
that ability in this organization to speak up like that
or was that's something you felt like you had to
sort of earn through, you know, what you've done on
the field, what you've done you know with you know
at you know, as kind of building developing yourself as
a leader in this.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
In this line.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
Now, I feel like as time went by, I was
able to earn that position. I don't think anyone comes
in with that kind of no respect, uh or no platform.
And I felt as the youth went by, I proved
who I was and we started winning games. No, I
I uh enabled myself to be able to speak up
in in cer certain positions, but uh no use this
(34:01):
platform four know certain things and I don't use No
my opportunities upstairs to speak with uh no upper management
for certain things.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
No too more.
Speaker 8 (34:12):
And you've had harder years wins and losses, wives to
you were compared to this year. I guess were there
ever earlier points you felt like, M like say something or.
Speaker 6 (34:23):
I mean the only more disappointing year was the first year,
And uh, I didn't have the I didn't have the
the position to say anything.
Speaker 7 (34:30):
Now do you do you feel like in order to
be strongly strongly considered or an if a defensive player.
Speaker 14 (34:39):
Okay, year, and do you feel like the two means
to be winning or do.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
You still think.
Speaker 13 (34:45):
That that you'll be right up?
Speaker 6 (34:48):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (34:48):
I mean, I don't know. I don't I don't really.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
Yeah, you know, think about it when I lay down
in bed right at the end of the day, it's
like winning has to be taken it into account. But
it's also the defensive player of the year. You know,
who's who's best player on defense? And I think you
have to to weigh both back then, as I said,
at the end of the day, whoever was out there,
you know, making plays and being the most disruptive should be,
(35:11):
you know, weighed a little bit heavier than the you know,
absolute result of the of the game or you know,
the season. But I think both should definitely be taking
into account pretty good.
Speaker 8 (35:21):
LA.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Is there are there last worth part? Are there people
that have.
Speaker 15 (35:23):
Like encouraged you to be more vocal than you put around?
Speaker 11 (35:26):
I mean, like I am, I know you've worked out
with local you're around you do you already us or.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
Most certain times things like that?
Speaker 4 (35:31):
Or are there other.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Athletes who have been currently or over are kind of
showing you the work in your mind?
Speaker 6 (35:37):
I mean Lebron for sure, you know, I mean he's
he's seen everything you know on the sports side of
side of it, and uh you know, his his uh
advice has been uh very valuable, you know him, his
team and you know, you know, just being able to
to be around them and learn from them. It's been
in uh very useful of these these last couple of
(35:58):
years and other up in no more along the way,
but uh, definitely using my my platform and using my
voice to my benefiting and my teen's benefits and thank crucial,
appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
