Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this week fifteen postgame edition of the From
the Podium podcast. I'm Gabe Koller Up. The Browns fell
to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday by
the final score of thirty one to three. On this episode,
you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Should We're Sanders,
and defensive end Miles Garrett.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Up.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
First, here's head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
All right, injury front Tevin Jenkins has a shoulder injury
that he reaggravated. We'll get a look at that likely
in the morning. And then Sam Kamara had an elbow
injury there. I think he'll be okay. Obviously, credit to
the Bears. Didn't play well enough, didn't coach well enough today,
got off to a bad start and never were able
to get out of that. So credit to them. But

(00:41):
we have to learn from these and as players, we
got to learn from some of these moments and we will.
And with that, I'll take any questions.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
We didn't championship that bet. They were ready any play. Yeah,
ready to play.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Obviously, good return coming out and then we got backed
up there. I felt like the player was on the
line was not sure how that didn't get overturned, and
then we're up inside the one, which is a tough
place to start in a game against a good football team.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Can you just assess how you think that scheduled? And
I know there were challenging condition, offensive line problems.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
And all being yeah, challenging. I mean it's incomplete till
I can look at it, obviously, but I know there's
things that we can do better. I know there's things
that he can do better.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
We'll look at it. Kevin laid offensive line. He's just
in such a state.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
How difficult is it to get any sort of evaluation
on quarterback office anything with the amount of I mean
just the amount of injury.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, I think you won't hear excuses from us in
terms of who's in there, not in there, those type
of things. We trust the guys that are in there.
We go to battle with those guys, so we have
expectations regardless who's in there.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
There some problem with guys Sanders.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Early they mentioned that you guys had the wrong plays
in the wristband on the first two drives. Is it
is it accurate?

Speaker 5 (01:49):
No?

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, yeah, there was something. I don't know if the
wristband got something on it or whatever it was, but
there was We we got that fix pretty quickly.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
And what about the interceptions. Obviously the second one was
not Shador's fault, but the other two looked like he
just kind of made some poor decisions there.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, I'd rather look at it to give you a
more informed answer.

Speaker 6 (02:13):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
We know that team is good at taking the ball away,
particularly intercepting the ball, so we'll learn from those.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And what about the one that did get ripped out
of Jerry Judy's hands?

Speaker 4 (02:22):
And then what can you say about it?

Speaker 7 (02:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Uh, obviously we're trying to make a play there in
that moment, trying to get on the board.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
That guy made a good play.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
And I know you have told us that Shador is
the starter for the last core games this season. That's
still yes, yes, OK.

Speaker 8 (02:40):
Can you quantify just how different cold the cold needed
to operate in times.

Speaker 9 (02:45):
In this game?

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, I think it was the same for both teams.
You know what it was going into it. We deal
with those elements. Crowd noise is the advantage that the
home team has in any game like this.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
Every week. You know, we're actual bust us tease.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
Why aren't those things are getting correct.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, obviously we expect our guys to be able to
go out there and perform in some of these situations,
and we need to look at it and figure out
ways to get guys on the ground and not have
the ball coming out. That's obviously where you're playing in
a game like this, you're playing a field position game,
and we didn't put ourselves in a great spot early Kevin,
the run game.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
Obviously the stuff sledging out there, but it seemed like
maybe early on it was different.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
You guys seem to be I mean, go and leading
more to the beast.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
Was a game plan to kind of come out throwing
a little bit more towards it kind of game.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Situation, Yeah, i'd say game flow, game situation, those type
of things. But we have to get we all of
us have to do a better job to get that
run game going.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Well, how would you assess the pass protection?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Could it look like they're where they were prompting and
some pressures and you know, they were a.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Lot of pressures. Would you kind of assessed to play?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, again, it's hard to give you a good an
to rate this minute, but until I look at it.
But they have a good pressure package when you're getting
those pass downs that they do a good job with
a lot of looks, whether they bring guys or drop
them like you mentioned. So felt good about our plan.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Obviously we'll look at it. Education between Luke and Shadow
didn't hold up at was it not to far? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:18):
I think I don't think communication was an issue with
Luke and should they seem to be on the same page.

Speaker 5 (04:25):
Connected with Isaiah on a couple of the big, big plays.
But there was one play it looked like was that
did maybe Isaiah had not run like more on the
inside the one incompletion it?

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, I saw it.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, I'm not Yeah, I wouldn't call miscommunication. I don't
know if you just didn't find the ball.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
I'm not sure was said.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Maybe not up for like a.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Full game, did he?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yeah, obviously it was cleared. Just got to practice that Friday.
So just won't always be smart about guys that haven't
practiced a ton in the week. But knew that he
was available to us.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
When when you consider the you know again the offensive
line Cole you know, David Njokhu said, and all the
different things that should or had to deal with in
this game. I mean, did he show you some things
that have you thinking that?

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, yeah, I'm obviously thinking about just this game and
those type of things. He's a young player that is
making progress. So, like we've talked about all week, and
I see it in games, I get to see it
in practice. There's gonna be ups and downs to young
players in particular quarterback position. So we'll learn from it
and we'll be better next week.

Speaker 8 (05:29):
I'm getting them two scores early and then three and
thirty didn't drastically change what they were able to do
on defense.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Kind of them at you guys on offense.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
You know, I I would give them credit obviously that
they did a great job, but we have to we
have to execute better in some areas.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
That's the best cake wait defends in the NFL. Did
you talk to.

Speaker 10 (05:50):
To standers about just three in our sixty four years
last week, turnovers this week that up and.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Down, particularly to the their takeaways, or.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Saying just the ups and downs like you did?

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Oh well, yeah, I mean sure, you talk to your
quarterback a lot about the opponent you're facing, what they're
good at, things that they're going to try to take away.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
But at the end of the day.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
You just have to focus on your development in each
one of these games. And he's fighting like crazy to
try to help us win. Obviously we came up short,
all of us. We came up short. So you learn
from it and you apply those lessons in the future.

Speaker 10 (06:19):
Seems it seems like they put moved Caleb Willogs around
and moved the pockets from neutralize your pass rushing and.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
What did you think of what they would do there?

Speaker 10 (06:26):
And what kind of pressure does Caleb put on a
defense when when he's out of the pocket.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Yeah, well we knew all week going into this one
that he's as elusive as anybody is in the league. Obviously,
they have designed plays for him to get outside the pocket.
They and then he has ways to off structure get
outside the pocket. The touchdown pass that he made, you know,
run out of bounds is you know, a really high
level play for a quarterback. But they do a nice
job in their design on some of those keepers and

(06:50):
the play actions, and then obviously he just has that
ability to extend plays.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Next quarterback should or Sanders.

Speaker 10 (06:55):
That defense is known for their ability to take the
ball away, Like what did you see out there with
the intersect and which ones would you think?

Speaker 4 (07:02):
What place would you make me like to have back?

Speaker 7 (07:04):
I guess I would like to have majority of plays
back for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (07:08):
They did a good job and doing with the coast
of doing. Shout out to their defensive coordinator team. They
did a lot of great stuff.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
What was it like for you?

Speaker 10 (07:17):
I mean you played at Colorados, I mean you played
a bunch of cool games. Like what was it like
playing in those conditions?

Speaker 6 (07:22):
Like?

Speaker 10 (07:23):
What were the difficulties? And you know, now what did
you feel like? What did you feel How do you
feel like you dated those efficiencies?

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (07:32):
Yeah, the condition is not really a big factor because,
thankfully to our staff, we got everything to keep us warmth,
so everything was smooth.

Speaker 10 (07:42):
Isaiah isabond made a couple of nice plays. What did
you think his performance here? Are you gaining sort of confidence?

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (07:48):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We just gotta use Isaiah more, you know,
for a skill set where he's great at and uh,
just keep evolving him overall as a player. And I'm
thankful to have him, you know, it's thankful to you know,
be able to spend time with him.

Speaker 10 (08:03):
Where would you I mean you've asked similar questions like
this throughout your grip.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
But how would you evalue kind of where you are
right now?

Speaker 10 (08:09):
You know, as as an NFL quarterback comparative the beginning
of the season, where do you feel like your progress
has been and where do you feel like you still.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Wanted to want to go.

Speaker 7 (08:16):
I think in every situation, it's always gonna be it's
always gonna be things that you want to work on,
things that you want to get better, you know. So, Uh,
I think I think that's that's where I'm heading. You know,
I'm just I'm in the learning and understanding phase, you
know of this game and how things.

Speaker 8 (08:34):
Are should where you knew this was a tough defense
in terms of takeaways coming in.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
What do you think they need a great a pressure
to get into three or seven?

Speaker 7 (08:43):
So they just had a great they had a great
defensive scheme, and I enjoy playing against them. I enjoy
playing uh and that because you know, it was definitely
a little challenge. So I look forward to learning from
that and look forward to to understanding exactly, you know,
how how things was on filming. Uh, just be able

(09:04):
to learn from it.

Speaker 6 (09:06):
As to Judy was right out of the money and
it ends up being in himself that this morning, frustrated inside.

Speaker 7 (09:12):
No, it's gonna happen, like it's gonna happen, so like
it is what it is. I'm not I'm I'm not wondering,
you know, ever kick somebody down when you're down, you know,
like he he he understands that's a big play. And uh,
I'm sure he's he's hard on hisself, so it's no
need for me to be extra and do that.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
What on TV they mentioned that something happened with your
wristband after the first two drives.

Speaker 7 (09:38):
Oh no, the car just fell out. Yeah, it just
fell out on the sideline. Yeah, that was it.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Should it's just your fourth start.

Speaker 8 (09:44):
But to have the the ups and downs of having
four touchdowns last week.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
And three picks, yeah, can handle that kind of process
and to go on, well.

Speaker 7 (09:52):
Yeah, I'm I'm the same person, you know regardless, So
I still I still got the same belief, you know
myself and uh I definitely you know, like it is
every week, you know, you gotta get out there, learn
from it, play better, and that's it.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Sure? Are you the first have didn't go your way?
With you guys were in it?

Speaker 8 (10:08):
Just kind of what was the mindset going in the
second half of trying to get some consistencies.

Speaker 7 (10:13):
Yeah, really going into the second half, it was really
like get things going, you know, and and uh get
rolling on offense, you will.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
You were able to connect on a couple of those
those one balls to tell Isaiah just how much are
you sort of you know, you talk about time on
task and how much are you sort of starting to
find that connection with him?

Speaker 4 (10:36):
And how much can that can you sort of that
be something to build off.

Speaker 7 (10:41):
No, everything, everything, every rep everything is something to build
off of. It's something that you have to continue to
work at and learn and be able to understand, uh,
with each game, understand the different speeds, you know, understand
target to them about uh, we gotta pay a little
faster right here, you know. So it it's just it's

(11:02):
just a lot of different variables you have to you
have to go into each game with you know, so
you gotta learn from 'em all. You know, is it
hard to nah?

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Nah if you if you already answer this, you don't
have to answer to get back.

Speaker 7 (11:16):
It was just hard for us to get in the rhythm,
That's all I would How how.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Would you just assess your or some up your your
own game. How did you feel how the way that.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
You played today?

Speaker 7 (11:25):
Oh, we got a lost, so we did. I didn't
do uh good. So that's what That's what sums it up.
R When you got into those when when the office
got into those third and thirty long situations, you saw
what was the Bear's kind of showing you how to
feel that maybe giving you guys some some trouble to
asking everything they showed on film, we just failed to execute.
That's it. That's all mean. I gotta be able to

(11:47):
get us, get us, you know, in in the right
situations and uh get a ball out my hand. No,
you made hardie?

Speaker 4 (11:53):
What happened if you?

Speaker 7 (11:55):
Oh yeah, she asked, Yeah, it just fell out.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
You think you should play in cold weather games before?
What way sho does that impact you on the field.

Speaker 7 (12:04):
I've went spent two years in Colorado and it gets
pretty cold Mississippi at the back end of the year.
So uh, it's the same.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
What did you learn most from this game?

Speaker 5 (12:15):
Each week?

Speaker 2 (12:15):
I know you picking up new things, learning things. What
would your takeaway from this game?

Speaker 7 (12:22):
The biggest takeaway from the game. Well, I gotta I
gotta like be compressed, you know, like and and and
understand you know, everything that just transpired for real, So
we we I just showered, I just did everything I
could to get ready to come in here, and then
I'll be able to watch it and be able to understand.
But it's it's a lot of different things you could

(12:43):
think and everything, but the main thing is, you know,
being impressed, chill and be able to learn from it,
you know, if you.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Play in story.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
But the offensive line, I mean just so many relatively
new faces on geartt has to come in and you.

Speaker 4 (12:58):
Know, for Devin's.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
At quarterback behind such a you know, such a so
many guys kind of rootiated.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
It up up the front house.

Speaker 7 (13:08):
There's nothing you could control. You can't look at that,
you can't focus on that. You know. That's that's an
uncontrollable thing, you know. And I'm sure everybody that went
in and out, I'm sure they don't should ain't want
to be hurt, you know. So that's a part of life.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Sure, kevin't said he's sticking with you after the game,
even though I mean we knew you were gonna finished
off the season, but you know, he just kind of reiterated,
uh that, you know, you get to keep going and
kind of put this one behind you. How does it
feeble to know that you are going to be able
to go out there and do this again?

Speaker 7 (13:39):
Yeah, well he said that kind of last week. So
I don't know, you're not worried about losing your job
or anything like that when he said something like that,
you know, were league we in you could lose your
job at any point in time. So you don't. You
don't play. You don't play with fear when you when
you live and playing fear then you know, like and

(14:00):
that be yourself, you know, So I don't. I don't.
I don't play or live in fear. Whatever situation I'm in,
I'm in whatever's happens, it happens, you know. But uh,
I I live each moment and UH try to live
each days to the fullest. So never live and worry
or fear last.

Speaker 6 (14:18):
The biggest problem with the Running Game is just picking
down fourteen up right from the start, the worl of
changes on the offensive line that you can't control, what
what effect of the Running game?

Speaker 9 (14:28):
More?

Speaker 7 (14:29):
Isn't Oh I don't. I'm not sure. Yeah, honestly, like
I I don't. I don't know how to answer that
I'm not sure. I think uh, overall, I just gotta
I just gotta get us out that situation. Then now
open up the run.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
Finally, defensive end. Miles Garrett, how does it look like at.

Speaker 4 (14:50):
One point there the second half you're kind of pointing
to your.

Speaker 5 (14:53):
Thigh and I mean you just take a a shot there,
and I mean, well, I mean it seems like you
it was.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Hurting, but it wasn't you know what, you were gonna
play through it.

Speaker 9 (15:04):
That's how always I'm gonna play through no pretty much anything.
But yeah, tweaked my hip or you know something in
that area. So I was feeling that for the rest
of the game. But like I said, I was gonna
keep continue to push through cause you know, still got
something to play for. There's just you know, as long
as there's games games on the schedule, i'm'a go out

(15:26):
there and try to win.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
It was on your right side of your left side,
the hip.

Speaker 9 (15:32):
Left. Let me let me sharing this this info with
the enemy.

Speaker 10 (15:38):
What what were your impressions of uh Caleb Williams and
kind of what they did to move him around to
kind of you.

Speaker 7 (15:44):
Know the gate.

Speaker 10 (15:45):
Your guys pass rush took some moving in the pocket.

Speaker 9 (15:50):
Well, I mean I think we we rushed pretty well
for the most part, but I mean he's he's elusive.
I mean he got out of the uh got out
of a couple. I mean they held up. They protect
with six or seven sometimes, but they also have some
some uh really good guys on that That old line
and rolling the pocket definitely helps. So he's able to
use his feet and still be quite accurate. And uh

(16:11):
now they used that to advantage on I believe a
couple of scoring plays where he was on the move
and he found someone just with with time, you know,
you get you give a guy at that time and
and receivers to you know, of the option to you know,
kind of like freestyle you know, back there and they're
gonna eventually get open. So we have to continue to
try to pull him up and kim contained. And now

(16:33):
we did that for the most part. But he definitely
made plays and he's a playmaker.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
What about the bags here and closer to you know,
to the record is is it nice to know that
it's in sight.

Speaker 7 (16:47):
And it's always been insight.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
My house.

Speaker 5 (16:52):
Uh more than half or at least half your sacks
this season has come on third down and he had
one another one both one whole one and a half.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Today we're on third down.

Speaker 5 (17:02):
Just when you see that, I mean, it's just how
much does that you know, talk about you know, elevating
your game in the big more, you know, in the
key downs, that money down, you know, third down.

Speaker 9 (17:16):
I mean, playmakers make plays, I mean big time moments.
You've got half your big time players and then go
out there and shine and uh, you know, it makes
it easier when I've great coaches and hell of a
coordinator was calling those kind of plays and allow me
to get freed up or at least dealing with lesser

(17:38):
a tip or holding holding the QB to at least
you know, one pump and then looking around for a
second option, so you know, shout out to them. But
also the guys next to me, they make it a
lot easier as well.

Speaker 5 (17:53):
You also you mentioned you know, something still to play for.
There's a lot of young guys in that in that
locker room. When they see you, you know, with that
mindset and see that's the standard that the best players
in the game have. How important is that setting the
tone for for those guys who are still just sort
of you know in the the very early stages of.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
Their own careers.

Speaker 9 (18:16):
Yeah, you got to build a stable foundation done with
the young guys, showing them that, you know, no matter
what the record is, what the score is, you got
to come out and be yourself. You know it didn't
happen to day, but no teams would come back from worse.
You know, there there are moments in which you know
you're you started slow and maybe they've gotten us for
for two or three quarters, but there's as long as

(18:37):
there's still time in the clock. No, dig deep in
and go and find it. And you know you can
say that for the season and for life. No, don't,
don't shy away from no obstacles to struggle, and it's
going to be there. You know, it's it's really the
test of a of a man who you are when
you knows come Wow, did you guys.

Speaker 8 (18:56):
Make any adjustments after their hot start? Do you just
think you made more plays over the next time?

Speaker 4 (19:00):
Wear and a half or seven? Bit of both.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
I mean.

Speaker 9 (19:05):
They're running the ball well, and uh you know of
course in the office has their first fifteen and and
uh you know how to attack us the best they
can and you know they have some success but no
one once you get down to the bare bones of it,
nowhere or a hard front to deal with. And wait,

(19:26):
I wish we would have started a little bit quicker.
Wish we would have seen through some of the things
that we're doing and uh executed and had a little
bit better eyes. But that's a that's a good team
over there. They got good coaches and good coordinators as well.
And uh, it's just it's just tough, you know, gotta
start a little bit quicker.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Good.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
What's your three games left?

Speaker 8 (19:46):
You know, what's your message in these guys in terms
of trying to finish stronger.

Speaker 9 (19:54):
You take it one game at a time. You don't
look at the record, look at the man beside you.
You know it could be his last game. It could
be his last game, an NFL last game. Year, could
be your last game. We don't go out with a whimper.
Don't don't go gently into the night now. You keep
on fighting and and uh, you know you want to
be a member for for your very last play, your

(20:17):
very last game, and you want to go out on
