Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this in New Year's Eve edition of the
From the Podium podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm Gabe Kola.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Browns are back at the Cross Country Mortgage Campus today
to prepare for the season finale at pay Course Stadium
in Cincinnati against the Bengals this coming Sunday. On this episode,
you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Shadoor Sanders,
wide receiver Jerry Judy, and cornerback Denzel Ward.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Up first, we'll start with head coach.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Kevin Stefanski, who talked about playing the Bengals high flying
offense with Joe Burrow backing healthy.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Okay, looking forward to the work week here, got a
good practice today and then throughout this week, and obviously
a great challenge going on the road versus division opponent.
Saw them back in Week one, which seems like a
very long time ago, but they've changed, we've changed. But
looking forward to the challenge of going up against a
Cincinnati Bengals attack, we know what that entails. Obviously, good players,
(00:56):
good coaches, good scheme, that type of thing. They know
us and we know them. So we got a chance
to try to even the series and finish strong. So
that's where our mindset is, and I'll take any questions
you guys got.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
You expect Zach to start at right guard or or
there some of the somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Else certainly could be Zach. We have options there. We're
working through all that.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
I think he played Sunday is kind of first start,
a chance to hear.
Speaker 6 (01:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Obviously, Zach played last season for US, has not played
as much this year, but has been working extremely hard
and I'm seeing a lot of that hard work show up.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
In these games. So you know, I'm bullish on Zach.
Speaker 7 (01:34):
The injured players, do we expect everyone that's healthy to
play Sunday?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yes, even the candidate to potentially end up on I
R before the end of the end of the league.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
He's you know, he's still rehabbing that injury. He's uh,
expect him back tomorrow, but he can up pitch.
Speaker 6 (01:53):
You guys. One appropriate.
Speaker 5 (01:58):
With with Wyatt and I are just how Top finishes
it for him. You know he has had to see
him like that, and it's his last year under contract.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, disappointed obviously for it to end with an injury
for a wide. He fought rehabs very hard to get
back to play, and that one then re aggravated that
injury early in that game, So I was disappointing for
him and for us obviously. You know, he's played through
a lot of injuries before in the past as well,
has played really good football for us, so you know,
(02:27):
but disappointed that it ended, you know, a week early,
that's how long. Yeah, I'd say he's rehabbing very hard.
We'll see, not going to practice today, but definitely not
rolling him out.
Speaker 8 (02:44):
Tyson Campbell, how did you see him kind of fit
in and settle and you know the Pittsburgh the first
Priston game was the first team then even the improvement he.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Made to Sunny game.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, I'm a big fan of Tyson's. The way he
carries himself, the way he is in the building, the
way he plays, the physicality with which he plays, how
he plays the ball in the air.
Speaker 6 (03:04):
He fits in.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
I've told you guys, he fits in really well. Culturally,
he fits in schematically. He's been awesome to be around.
So you know, you think back to that first game
that you throw him in there on short rest and
just getting to know people's names and that type of thing.
Speaker 6 (03:20):
But he battled and that was kind.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Of a you know, a picture of a young man
who's going to just give it everything he has. And
that's what I think you have in Tyson.
Speaker 9 (03:30):
Address the team at all with you know, just things
swirling around about you know, your job security and all
that kind of stuff. Where do you guys, is it
just businesses?
Speaker 3 (03:38):
No, the most important thing is what's in front of us,
and that's our game Sunday down in Cincinnati.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
That's all we care about.
Speaker 10 (03:48):
With Harold, all the stuff you guys have asked him
to do this year and then I know he did
a lot of that in college, but at what point
do you start to feel comfortable.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Kind of putting more and more on his plate the off.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
Season and the year.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, there's no shortage to what you want to the
schemes that you want to run with him, and the
roles that you want him to be in.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
I've told you guys over the years.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
That those roles like that are earned, and he's earned
it with how we trust him, how he learns the
things that he can do as a runner, as a blocker,
as a receiver. There's been times where you want to
throw on the ball, but you also want them to
be the blocker, so you're kind of all right, well,
we can't do both on this play, so you're just
trying to.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
Mix and match where you put him.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
But that speaks to his versatility, which I think is
speaks to his intelligence.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Was there a time in August that you thought he's
really ready for this?
Speaker 6 (04:39):
Or was it before that? Ah Man?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Probably before that, Zach like he was one of those
guys when you're watching on tape you could start to
see it right away, what you would the things that
he could do for you.
Speaker 6 (04:53):
Then doing our homework on.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Him, talking to his coaches, spending time with him, realizing
this is a very mature twenty year old that can
has the propensity to learn all these positions. And then
you know, throughout rookie mini camp, throughout the spring, just
the physical ability showed up, getting in and out of cuts,
making every catch.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
I mean, it was pretty apparent to us.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Shador going into this last week. What's most important for.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Him to and his development, you know, ending the year
with momentum, I think, continue to build, continue to build
on the things that he's doing really well. Like I've
told you guys, there's things that you ask him to
improve upon each week, and he's diligent about those things.
So it's just improving and then you know, winning and
we talked about that last week. We want to win
as a football team. Obviously as quarterbacks, we get judged
(05:44):
oftentimes on wins and losses, and it's important, you know,
to finish strong. So that's what he's going to try
and put this team in position to go win.
Speaker 9 (05:52):
Bil the seven games, the seven games that you will
have had by the time all of this is said
and done within the seven starts. Is that going to
be enough for you guys to really take a good,
strong look at this and say, hey, we think we
you know, we've got something moving forward here.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I understand the question, Mary kay, But for me that
really I have the blinders on to the final game
here versus Cincinnati, and that's where his focus is as
well of you.
Speaker 9 (06:18):
I mean, what do you like about what you've seen
so far from this point?
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, the exciting part, like I've told you guys, with
Shador and with a lot of the young players, is
improvement and asking them to improve on this technique or
on this thing that has to do with the game,
and these guys being conscientious enough to put the work in.
So that's the exciting part of young players is seeing
constant improvement.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Bagsenter wrote pretty high draft.
Speaker 9 (06:43):
What has kept him up with the physically from that
broken leg or.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
No, he's had players in front of him.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
A young player that has worked very hard is ready
to go in in a moment's notice. Sometimes you need,
you know, the opportunity comes in a for a variety
of re and obviously his opportunities coming here now potentially
at the end of the season, But doesn't mean that
we're not working.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Very hard throughout the week with him.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
And all the work that he's put in with coach Bloom,
with coach Wilkerson. On the field, I think it's it's
been a really positive season. While it hasn't necessarily been
representative in a lot of reps in the games, I.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
Do think it's been a positive season.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Bar he's come back from so.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, I mean their offense when he's in there and
the things that he's doing, it's it's we know, having
gone up against him, how difficult he is to defend,
and he can make plays on time, off schedule, can
make every throw.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
He's somebody that we have a ton of respect for.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
A success against the Defensively, what is it about the
way the players and the scheme you guys have on
defense that allows you to match up as bulletins that offense.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Yeah, it's a it's a huge challenge every week in
this league, but certainly when you're when you're going up
against Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase T. Higgins, multiple tight ends,
Chase Brown is I think a great running back.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
They have a good rush attack. Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Each week presents its own challenges, but this is, uh
a unit that's playing, if not the highest at the highest,
you know, one of the highest levels on the offensive
side of the ball. So Wolf, We'll obviously always try
to put our guys in position to go make plays,
but uh, it comes down to their players versus our players.
Speaker 6 (08:32):
Okay, thanks guys.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
The first player up today is quarterback. Should we're Sanders
or is.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
There anything specific that you kind of want to show
into your final game this season?
Speaker 11 (08:40):
Uh, we're just stay consistent taking what they give me.
Whenever you get off rhythm, get back on rhythm, you know,
get back on track.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
And I think that's the next.
Speaker 11 (08:51):
Part of my game I'm trying to evolve is whenever
it is is either were stagno or some university comes
then being able to get back on track.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Do you feel like you've shown.
Speaker 12 (09:01):
Enough through your starters.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Through the league that you're a franchise quarterback matches here? No,
I'm not.
Speaker 7 (09:08):
I I can't.
Speaker 11 (09:09):
I can't think about what other people opinion or what
they viewed me. As I know, you know the team,
the teams that we go against, I know they they
definitely respect being a passing game for sure, But I can't.
I can't be accountable for somebody else's decisions.
Speaker 12 (09:33):
Good feeding along the way, about just how much you're developing,
the stress you're getting.
Speaker 11 (09:40):
How's that?
Speaker 5 (09:42):
Yeah, we keep everything in house. We keep everything in
house here. You don't have to gave talked about that
throaty Jerry. Uh. You know, so you like to give
you guys a chance. So when you go back and
watch out for field, Like, is there a balance there
just having a maybe some situations it's okay to private
in summer when you have to down.
Speaker 11 (10:02):
Yeah, for sure. I think I think it's just decisions
within myself. I think, uh think things go things go
different ways. You know, like if I if if positive
things happened and it's like okay, but if Negga's thing happened.
That's okay, But I gotta be able to take the
proper necessary risk. And uh even whenever you go through
your progressions and the checkdown isn't there, then what you know?
(10:24):
So so that's kind of where I feel like the
strides have been made from getting to the Reds, getting
through the reads, going getting to the checkdown now now now,
the biggest jump I'll say for me is that I
plan on showing and planning on improving is when when
when there is no play and I can't get out
of it, I can't run. Uh what I'm gonna do
with the bon.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
No matter who's played quarterback this year for the Browns,
every game there's been maybe drawing maybe two really good series.
Speaker 6 (10:53):
And that's about it.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
What did what's prepetting the offense from being more consistent?
Speaker 11 (10:59):
I I'm not sure that that's on ever on everybody,
but they wanna speculate and uh whatever they think, you know, Yeah,
I don't think that's something I could.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
I don't know think about.
Speaker 12 (11:11):
Like, oh, how much of you guys, you know your
congry dogs, how much you like your hungry dogs?
Speaker 9 (11:22):
Stead of grown up together on this last these last
six starts and really.
Speaker 12 (11:26):
Kind of uh, just kind of going out there and
shining a situation.
Speaker 11 (11:33):
I'll say whenever, whenever everybody get their opportunity, they're excited
for it, so they ready to get out there and
do their thing.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
What makes this team wanna fight so hard? Or coach?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
The fans people on these final games with speculation about
his jobs just seems like you guys are as.
Speaker 11 (11:50):
Like, yeah, I I don't think I don't think we
we we listen to the external stuff. I don't think
we now he's our coach, like we view we view
him as the same as we view him the first week.
You know, we got the.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
Most respect for him.
Speaker 11 (12:01):
And uh yeah, Like I think that's more media stuff
that's more outside noise than knowing. I mean half its no, no,
we're gonna be here next year, you know what I'm saying.
So it's like we don't we don't really look at that.
You know, we play, we played for the franchise, we
played for our coaches, we play for the names on
the front and back of our jersey. So it's like
it's more than just like stuff that's just online.
Speaker 10 (12:23):
You know, do you find it easy to block out
that story of stuff or is that something you catch up.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
Learn how to do now?
Speaker 11 (12:29):
I think I think depression and intention to everything been
on me since since I was a kid, since I
was born. So it's like it's just another another year,
another year of it, but it doesn't change anything within
my own process.
Speaker 8 (12:43):
Okay, what's what's Kevin meant to you in your looking season?
Just first film and you know, like early in the
year stuff without what your relationship may.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Or and things like that just puts.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
You met to you and helping your liking up here with.
Speaker 11 (12:59):
Here, y'all say, Uh, I'm fruly thankful. I'm thankful that
that I was able to come here. I'm thankful that
I do have a relationship with all the coaches. I'm
thankful that uh, just being being being evolving from day one,
evolving from being a hungry dog and now like I'm
just it's exciting and sometimes I think about those days,
(13:19):
you know, So I don't take anything for granted. I think, uh, overall,
the communication with the coaches and everything been really good,
and I'm just thankful to just be here in general.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Goodness. Huh, I ain't.
Speaker 11 (13:40):
I ain't checked. It was a holiday, it was a
holiday the other week, so I ain't checked the po
box yet, but I'm definitely gonna check it. Well, I'm
personally not gonna check it, so let's just get this story.
I'm not gonna check it, but somebody gonna check it
in next.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
Couple of days, hopefully.
Speaker 11 (13:53):
I don't know in time though, maybe when they closed
kind of.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
Put his half, you know that checha repping you with
all of that?
Speaker 9 (14:01):
Is he concoble.
Speaker 11 (14:02):
I don't think no far likes and the kids still
pick you know, I don't think anybody likes in they
kids do anything negative, So I think.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
That's just a die.
Speaker 6 (14:10):
How would you feel your son this.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Y? I guess the same high everybody else?
Speaker 11 (14:15):
Have any conversations, Yeah, that's my dad.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
I talked to him.
Speaker 11 (14:19):
I talked to him a lot, you know, after the
games everything, So I gotcha. I don't know.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
I don't think he's just not gonna talk to me.
Speaker 11 (14:27):
I the the other thing, appreciate y'all.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Next wide receiver Jerry Judy, So I know we bad.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
Shit off cause how did you see each your de
fello off afty six? Though?
Speaker 7 (14:37):
Uh you know he he consistently approve it each each
week and every day. You know, he be doing a
good job of learning the game, learn the offense a
lot more, you know, and he con constantly growing.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Do you feel like you that connected with him?
Speaker 13 (14:50):
Like wrong?
Speaker 7 (14:51):
Cause I know when when Heroin out, she wrote in
to you want some tepic catches?
Speaker 5 (14:55):
Do you feel like we can kind of just kind
of going the national one? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (14:59):
You know, petitionally plays a uh a bit factor in
this whole thing. So you know, I was getting consistent
rest with each other throughout the throughout the season. You
know that that's gonna always help.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
It's sure early man, But cause what do you think his.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
Future I don't I don't know, he he I don't
know what his future is. But what he's doing right
now is it?
Speaker 5 (15:16):
It's good? How pivotal? Is this pretty good? St when
this last game, my ba, I ain't even hear pivotal?
Is it to win this last game to get to
all at 'em doing in the next year?
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (15:26):
Nah, you know you wanna win the you wanna finish
the season with a win, of course, you know. Yeah,
build was up a lot of more men. I'm going
to the next year where where that win? So you
know we wanna finish off strong.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
Right, do you feel like with the wave like you
were sporting to really have lately?
Speaker 7 (15:42):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Does that really flow to him nicely?
Speaker 8 (15:44):
For the future for you guys.
Speaker 7 (15:45):
To come that strong, keep that going, Uh, yeah, for sure.
Like I said, you know, just once, we just keep
having those rest with each other. You know, we gonna
we gonna learn each other and we gonna grow from there.
Speaker 10 (15:57):
Did You're there's so much outsits right now? What about
what might happen here next year? I guess this player
is like, how do you guys block all that out?
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Focus on this works?
Speaker 7 (16:09):
You know, we just don't focus on it basically, Lee,
You know, we ignore all the outside stuff because you know,
nine to nine percent of it be wrong. So just
you know, focus what's in the locker room.
Speaker 10 (16:18):
Okay, I was gonna say, you've you've been around coach
to fans get out.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
For two years? Yeah, I love you've seen him kind
of handle these two years. None especially you know later Delt.
Speaker 7 (16:29):
Uh, he he can't. He's been the same coach since
I since I've been here, through the ups and downs.
You know, he never changed. He always stay consistent, you know,
and and that's all you can ask before a coach.
You know, just never change when things are going good.
It's stayed the same. When things are going bad, he
stayed the same. So you know that's very good.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
I mean, would you like to see him stick around?
Speaker 7 (16:48):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (16:49):
Yeah, of course.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
Well you want to say, no crazy.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
I know, Uh, this year hasn't been the easiest for
you and the team. What do you think you can
take this play?
Speaker 7 (17:03):
I learned a lot of different this year, you know, patience,
you know, just control what you can control, you know,
and just you know on that you know nothing that
you can't control or fetch your mood and you're feeling
in how you go about your business. You know, just
control what your control and it sticks up. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Finally, cornerback Denzel.
Speaker 6 (17:20):
Ward say the game.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
Gonna With the game on the.
Speaker 13 (17:27):
Line, I think I think they're gonna throw him, you know,
you know, girls here, that's my guy. But you know
he trusted guys a lot to go out there and
make plays. So I think I'm gonna get some action
in this game as well.
Speaker 10 (17:39):
Rogers after the game said, thought, that's definitely.
Speaker 13 (17:45):
It's definitely not passing the afference. Of course they're gonna
say that from quarterback and offensive perspective. The game happened
so fast. When he went up, I went up, and
you know that was just great coverage and you know
you should have went should have went else.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
We're with it, scratching. Oh they did that those last questions.
Speaker 13 (18:02):
Yeah, yeah, I was really That's really why I asks
the question, cause like, I'm really curious, like one just
they hear, like their perspective on, like their game plan,
like was the plan to come to me at the end,
and you know, just you know, see how it goes.
So I I'm really just curious. If y'all find some information,
I'll just let me know.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
Don't go on. That's you're about tasting after the game.
But talking to him, he says, it feel it felt like.
Speaker 10 (18:23):
Night and day being out there for a second Stealers.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Game, going back to the first he was here.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Just what have you seen from him and how he's
kind of.
Speaker 13 (18:30):
Added Yeah, uh, this scheme and this Yeah, that's just
a tremendous amount of growth, uh for Tyson. Like you said,
from the first game, I mean he was just coming
in just trying to learn to playbook and uh, just
trying to get a good understanding of it. But now
he's got a downpack, and I mean it's showing up
on the field. You seeing him making plays all over
the place. And I mean that's probably why they tried
to come in me, cause uh he was locking his
side of the field down and making plays. But yeah,
(18:53):
he's he's been playing great for us, and uh he's
been a good addition.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
Denzil.
Speaker 9 (18:56):
I know that you players are gonna walk up to
this podium or microphone and then say, you know, we
don't want our.
Speaker 6 (19:01):
Head coach back in.
Speaker 9 (19:02):
So I do understand that. Uh, but it seems like
there is a genuine anity amongst you guys for Kevin.
You know, we all saw how hard you guys played
for him.
Speaker 12 (19:13):
Uh you know in that in that game, that final
home game.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
Yeah, so uh you know, what can you say about
how how you feel about him as a coach? How
do you think you guys all feel about Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
How much do you guys really want to have him?
Speaker 5 (19:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (19:25):
See this threat.
Speaker 13 (19:26):
Yeah, he's a he's a great coach. I mean, like
I said, we're all in this together.
Speaker 7 (19:29):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (19:29):
I know, like our record isn't the best record, but
it's not just uh, one person or one coach it
doesn't just fall. I mean it falls all on his
hands in a sense. That's why the outside world sees
it as like, oh, it's it's just his fault. But
it's not just his fault. It falls on all of us,
falls on myself, every single player that's going out there
and playing, and every single coach. You know, we take
(19:50):
this uh record upon all of us. You know, we
gotta all own it. And like I said, that's not
the season that we necessarily want it. But yeah, I
mean we're in it fighting with each other and uh
we got each other's back.
Speaker 10 (20:02):
How do you guys block out the outside noise and rumors.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
And and everything kind of screaming?
Speaker 13 (20:08):
Yeah, I mean rumors are rumors. I mean they're gonna do.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Whatever they do.
Speaker 13 (20:11):
You you can't repay, no mind, Like, whatever happens happens.
That's just life. And you just go from whatever happens,
go from there and and deal with it as it comes.
But you if you just try to speculate and guess,
so this could happen, This could happen, and you got
you gotta go crazy. So that's how I think about it.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
I just played Joe so many times. But how impressive
has it been for him, but kind of pick up
where he left off coming out.
Speaker 13 (20:34):
Then Yeah, I mean everybody knows that, bro. He's an
amazing quarterback. Like I say, he does it all out there.
There's an accurate ball, has a deep, deep throw, just
controls the entire offense. Like say, he has some injuries,
but being able to come back and still producing and
be the player that he is. I mean that just
speaks to the type of player he is, type of
(20:54):
guy he is, the work he puts in, and uh,
it's always gonna be a tough matchup going against him.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I think, yeah, that'll do it.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
