This episode of Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell brings laughter, faith, and inspiration to start your day right. In her Faith Walk, Erica reminds listeners that “God ain’t petty” — He doesn’t hold grudges like we do, and forgiveness is a path to freedom, not pride. In her Ericaism of the day, “My Girl Theresa,” Erica shares a heartfelt story about a friend whose unwavering kindness became a reminder to lead with love even when life feels unfair. The morning’s highlight comes during Fresh Word Friday, where Bishop Jason Nelson drops spiritual wisdom about trusting God through transitions, encouraging believers to keep their faith active when life feels uncertain.

From joy-filled birthday shoutouts to real talk about staying spiritually grounded, the Get Up crew—Erica, GRIFF, and the whole team—deliver motivation with heart. Whether you’re praising in your car or powering through your morning routine, this episode reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, His grace is bigger than our mistakes, and there’s always joy waiting on the other side of obedience.

Speaker 8 (01:55):
Former Detroit Congresswoman Caroline Cheeks Skilpatrick has died at the
age of eighty. Her family called her a tireless warrior
for Detroit and an unwavering champion for her constituents, noting
her more than thirty two years in public office. A
Democrat and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Madame
Kilpatrick made history as only the second black woman to

(02:16):
represent the state of Michigan in Congress, where she fought
to bring federal resources to her community, and she will
be missed. Politico exposed thousands of racists, anti semitic, and
homophobic messages from a Young Republican National Federation group chat,
involving several of the organization's leaders. The leaked messages, exchanged

(02:37):
over seven months, included offensive jokes about slavery, rape, and
gas chambers. Vice president J. D. Vance responded by downplaying
the remarks as stupid jokes made by kids, kids who
were between the ages of twenty one and forty, saying
that he doesn't want the controversy to ruin their lives,
but warned young people to be cautious about what they

(02:59):
post online. But Black America two fifty and the spotlight
is on. Black Poetry Day celebrated every year on October seventeenth,
honoring the legacy and creativity of African American poets past
and present. The day commemorates the birth of Jupiter Hammond,
the first published black poet in the United States, whose

(03:21):
seventeen sixty one poem An Evening Thought marked the beginning
of a literary movement celebrating black expression. Created in nineteen
eighty five after being proposed by musician Stanley A. Ransom,
the day recognizes the power of black voices in poetry,
from the written word to the spoken word, and is
officially observed as a state holiday. By the Way in Oregon,

(03:44):
and Happy Black Poetry Day to the What You Need
to Know newsletter poet in residence Quinn Townsend.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Riley, I'm Sybil Wilkes. Be informed, be empowered. In good day.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
It's good out sports.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
A minute.

Speaker 9 (04:00):
Up football last night that Cincinnati Bengals came back to
beat the Pittsburgh Steelers thirty three to thirty one. Joe
Flatco only been with the team less than a week.
Three hundred and forty two yards, three touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Aaron Rodgers got four.

Speaker 9 (04:14):
Touchdowns, two interception stealer. Fans are sick this morning. Sorry
for you. I watched the game with my daughter Justice Justice.
What they were saying on social media about that game,
what they was calling them.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Battle of the old men, Battle of the grays, Battle
of the dads, battle of the old heads.

Speaker 10 (04:31):
Just two old men going against each other in such
a way, how delicious. How many ways could you could
their knees break? How many ways could they grown in pain?
Because well they're old?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
That's enough, all right?

Speaker 9 (04:48):
Did Dodgers win over Milwaukee three to one? That series
is up three to nine in Calli and then Toronto
one again eight to two over Seattle. That series is
now tied two to two. Man, I'm griff. That's your
quick sports mintage. Surel With the birthdays, Thank you, Griff.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
If you're celebrating your birthday, you're celebrating today with Mae Jamison,
also actress Sharon Leo, Queen Nausea, actress Angel Parker, Why
Clef Jean his birthday is today, Ziggie Marley, actor Wood Harris,
and Howard Rollins. And if it's your birthday, well you
get a chance to shout it out.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
That's coming up.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
In fifteen minutes on the birthday shoutouts on Get Up
Mornings with Erica Campbell.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
If you're listening to Get Up with Erica Campbo.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Faith walking.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Right now, hey, man, faith walk.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Yes, it is time for the faith walk of the day.
And my question is why did God bless you? Did
he bless you to get somebody back that will make
God petty? Did he bless you so somebody else will
get mad? That would make God petty? Y'all stop acting
like my God is petty.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
He's not.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
He didn't bless your church because they didn't what nice
to you at the last church. He didn't bless your
career because somebody said you couldn't do it. That's not
why he blessed you. He blessed you so.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
That you would give him glory, that you.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Would tell people about him, not that God is a
big bully and he beats up his other children when
once y'all get mad.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
He's not that kind of God. Y'all.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Were gonna have to reframe that thinking and reframe that talking. Yes,
do people kind of have to eat their words when
they've been talking about you and God bless you.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yes, they do.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
But I don't think that God is sitting in heaven
going I'll show you rubbing his hands together. He's not
that kind of God. His blessing is for you because
He always had that blessing for you. He didn't just
make it up. You know what they're being mean. Matter
of fact, I'm going to create a new blessing. That
blessing was already yours from the beginning of time. But
guess what they was already gonna be ignorant from the
beginning of time. God saw that, and he saw this.
Keep your eyes on him, not on them. Were so

(06:54):
focused on who did something wrong? We don't know how
to fully appreciate God's goodness. You've given some of the
praise and attention to what went wrong instead of just
giving God glory for what he did. Because he's good,
because he's great, because he's a mindful God, and a
thoughtful God, and a grateful God, I mean a gracious God.
We gotta stop making God petty. He's not a petty God.

(07:17):
He's not mad at the people that you are mad at,
because those are also his children too. It is the
enemy that we are upset with. You know why, the
same devil keep bothering you because you won't rebuke the devil,
you rebuke the person. So that same spirit that keep
attacking you and antagonizing you, making you feel rejected, carrying
the spirit of offence.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
All those things that you carry and key.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
I don't know why I keep going the same because
you want rebuke the devil. You rebuking people, learn to
block the enemy's plan in your life. You've got power
over the enemy, you really do. You gotta come out
of agreement with it.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Though.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
You can't live a messy, raggedy life and think that
the enemy gonna leave you alone.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
He'd be like you invited me. You be messy.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
You've been talking about people all day, So then I'm
gonna sit in your lap. And then when you want
God to do something for you.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
You've been rocking with the death. Well, so why are
you surprised that he's there? Y'all?

Speaker 4 (08:02):
We gotta change our heart posture. God is a good God.
He's a kind God. He's a holy and righteous God.
He's a holy and a righteous God. So let's talk
about him in that way. Let's present him to the
world in that way. Stop talking about haters and all
that stuff. What are you giving that attention for God?
I'm getting a glory of that. And I know sometimes
when you start doing at the church, go up the

(08:23):
hay to woo hoo the haters.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
The God is like I ain't got nothing to do
it dumb.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
Let's learn to live lives to give God glory, honor
and praise because he deserves it.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
All right, that is my faith walk for the day.
All right, y'all.

Speaker 4 (08:37):

Word Friday, We've got a message from Bishop Jason Nelson.

Plus the ericaism of the day of a very embarrassing
story to share with you.

So y'all pray Griffill have the joys and concerns.

Speaker 4 (13:34):

Here's CC wineings with Come Jesus, Come get up.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
Morning is the worst.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
Words word Friday, that's your word.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Go forward here now, yes, now, it's time for the
fresh word on a Friday. Here's a message from Bishop
Jason Nelson of the tab Church in Baltimore, Maryland. His message,
Grace is not erase consequence.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
Check it out.

Speaker 7 (14:03):
Some of us are dealing with with familial situations. Family
situations not because God or danged for you to be
with that person.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
You chose.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
You did that.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
Oh, go TOQUI, get to mind God. We did that.

Speaker 7 (14:18):
You had money until you bought that Louis baton you
didn't need.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
You did that.

Speaker 7 (14:24):
You didn't need that extra pair of shoes. You wanted it. Now,
government shut down.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
We did it.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
Overweight, were did that?

Speaker 7 (14:35):
Satan was not in your said take another bite.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
That's not what was happening.

Speaker 7 (14:40):
We saw the meal and we kept eating because we
wanted to keep eating.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
We did that.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
He broke my heart.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
They told you in advance he was going to but
he was fine.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Look at him.

Speaker 7 (14:55):
Broke your heart. Now you down in aduldrums.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
You did that.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Of course, what does this have to do with the text.

Speaker 15 (15:03):
It has everything to do with the text, because sometimes
consequences happen. I know, we live in an era of grace,
and we believe in the grace of God.

Speaker 7 (15:15):
We in the dispensation of grace.

Speaker 16 (15:17):
I believe in it, I preach it, I wholeheartedly hold
on to it. But grace does not erase consequence. And
sometimes you gotta deal with what you did.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
Oh Mama would tell me all the time. God forgives
the sin, but the consequence is yours. She is say
that all the time. You could take what it takes,
one choice to destroy your life, one bad choice.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Geez, that's let me give us.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
Thank God for the grace behind you gotta live with
the residual of what you just did. Absolutely, absolutely, I
want to say, hype, but it's right.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Somebody cross scratching.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
Like house, stay right here, y'all, like, but you know
what we need this kind of teaching, and it is
not to beat people up it's to give you what's real.
The enemy will trick you and deceive you, and you
will be walking around excusing yourself when Heaven is going.

(16:22):
You did that, You made that choice right, taking advantage
of repentance like you're at the altar all the time for.

Speaker 8 (16:28):
The same thing. Okay, that's gonna come back to haunt
you after a while. You're gonna forgive you, Jesus forgive
see forgetfulness. Yet the residual of what you've done is
a consequence.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
It's yours.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
Yeah, And you're asking God for more. You're asking God
to do things in your life, and your choices now
show that you're not ready for that. You're not responsible
enough with your faith, with yourself, with your money, with
your life to handle what He wants to give you,
because you keep making the same kinds of mistakes. I
promise y'all. We love y'all. You may not feel this,
don't feel like love what it is? All right, y'all.
That's the fresh word, y'all. Stick around. We got more

(16:59):
on the Wade's Kid Up morning.

you can't expect covenant results from casual decisions.

Well y'all, It.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Is time for the erica Ism of the Day, and
I'm embarrassed. I'm just gonna tell y'all this embarrassing story
of what happened to me, and yeah, you know, just
pray for me. Okay, So a long time ago, I
was having Tina's first baby shower for Lea at my house.
Right right before that, that week, me and Tina had

(18:43):
done this interview with this amazing young lady. I thought
she was really cool. We bonded really great, so I
invited her to the baby shower. When I invited her
to the baby shower, she was new, didn't know anybody,
so I wanted to introduce her to people. So I
kept going, Hey, this is my friend Teresa. Hey, this
is my friend Teresa. So she made her around the
room and shook hands and stuff, and she was sitting
with people and made new friends. And I was still

(19:04):
just hating my friend Teresa. So we went through the
whole baby shower. It was amazing. I did this wonderful
play pin theme in the backyard. Me and one had
a basketball court at that time. It was just it
was really really cute. And so at the end of
the day, people are leaving, We're all happy. I'm exhausted
from throwing an event, and we sit down at this
little spot right by my front door. We had this

(19:25):
big Spanish style house was beautiful, and I sit down
to her and I was like, I hope you had
a good time.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
She said I did, and she was like, but.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
I got to tell you something. I said what, and
she had a look of concern on her face. Y'all
will never believe what this woman said to me. She said,
I just want to tell you that my name is
not Teresa. I said, I know you, Lyon, I know
you didn't just let me introduce you as Teresa all
day long. She was like, I know, but you were
so confident and I just I just let you do

(19:55):
it all day. But my name is Sally. Y'all, is
nowhere near Teresa.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
Why did I call the lady? Why did I call
her ter? I don't know.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
This story is still and she did not look she
looks like a Sally. Sally looks like Sally. And I
literally called that woman Teresa. All that, y'all, it still
makes me shame and my soul that that even happened
to me. So embarrassing things happened to all of us.
We're actually still friends to this day. And I actually
texted her and asked her, was it okay if I
told this story? But yes, that is my embarrassing Ericaism

(20:28):
for the day, y'all, I love you and I mean it.
Guess what you could still say? Friends, I didn't have
to disappear and act weird.

Speaker 16 (20:33):
You know.

Speaker 4 (20:34):
I messed up and I messed up. But she was
fine with it. I'm glad she had a good spirit
about it. I'm sure was embarrassing for her. So I'm
still sorry, Sally that your name is not Teresa, and
I called you Teresa all day. I love you, Sally.
That's the erka Ism other day, y'all stick around this
weir on the waves. Get up mornings good.

taken from my book It only takes a minute to
change your life. Before you change your thinking, you have
to change what goes.

Speaker 1 (25:51):
Into your mind.

Speaker 19 (25:52):
To change where you're going, you must first change your thinking.
Your thinking affects how you will act and therefore what
you would do. Just have to change your way and health,
you must change what you eat. The same is true
for your mind. You must fill your mind with the pure,
the powerful, the positive, healthy, inspirational and encouraging materials, and
get rid of the things that will kill your dreams

(26:12):
and your aspirations, doubt, fear, and negative thinking. Just as
you are about what you eat, you also are exactly
what you think about. Remember that your input determines your output.
So change your thinking, change your life, and change your
future by changing what you put in your mind.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott put her money where her mouth is
when it comes to supporting HBCUs, and this time she's
pouring her support into Morgan State University. Now we talked
about it, the billionaire philanthropists announced a jaw dropping sixty
three million unrestricted gift to Morgan State, the school's largest
donation and her second major donation to the Baltimore HBCU

(29:50):
under five years. Add that to her historic forty million
contribution in twenty twenty and Scott's seventy million donation to
uncf's efforts to strengthen historically black cop and universities. We
talked about that story earlier this month. For Morgan State,
now the third largest historically black college or university in
the country, this isn't just another line and a fundraising effort.

(30:12):
Its validation of years of intentional growth bode leadership and
the kind of innovation that reimagining what black higher education
can look like in the twenty first century. Unlike many
high profile donations that come with strings attached, Scott's gifts
are completely unrestricted, meaning Morgan has full autonomy to decide

(30:32):
how the money is spent. The university says it plans
to use the funds to bolster its endowment, expand student
support programs, and fuel new research initiatives that tackle real
world challenges like climate change, urban health, and educational equity.
I love this so much. Check out the full story
at getuperica dot com. As speaking of education, Slaje Knows

(30:54):
is taking her creative genius from the studio to the classroom.
The University of Southern California announced that the singer, songwriter
and visual artist has joined the Thornton School of Music
as its first ever all School Scholar and Residence, a
prestigious three year appointment that will see her deeply involved
in shaping the school's musical and cultural landscape. As a

(31:15):
part of her residency, Solange will teach a new course
titled Records of Discovery Methodologies for Music and Cultural Curatorial Practices.
The class, developed in partnership with her multidisciplinary creative agency
Saint Heron, will examine the art of curation through a
musical lens. Come on, Solange, I just love everything that

(31:36):
