Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Bone Battle for the laughter this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
This has been great things.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
I love the show and thought about China any good
what's going on? This is good morning, Beati. Yeah, but
(00:31):
long before he was a Warrior, he was a wild cat.
Talking about Steph Curry, who is back in town tonight,
and of course tomorrow there's a one pm Mattinee Charlotte
Hornets and the Golden State Warriors. There one time that
the Warriors play at Spectrum Center during the regular season,
(00:53):
and tonight something very cool happening at Davidson College Davidson.
Of course, those of you who don't know, that's where
I went to school. And I remember back in the
day when you would head off to Exit thirty and
the sign very famously said Davidson Davidson College.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Thirty off of I seventy seven.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So if you were new to the area, why do
you say Davidson twice? It's well, it's Davidson and Davidson
College if you take this exit. But that's back when
if you took the exit thirty, you go up and
there'd be like there's an exon and then a long
gap between that and Main Street Davidson like a park
and then you get to the campus. If you go
there now, we'd need three or four segments to tell
(01:31):
you all the stuff that's that's grown up there. We
have on the WBT hotline right now. We talked to
him earlier this year, back when the news came about
Steph Curry getting involved in the Davidson program as an
honorary assistant GM and that's when we had Chris Clooney
on the show. He is the athletic director at Davidson
(01:51):
and is back on with us today ahead of what
is very exciting happening at halftime of the Ducaine Davidson
game tonight on campus. There t ris a happy new Year,
my friend, thanks for coming back on with us.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, Happy new Year, Happy holidays, guys.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
So tell us what is going on tonight. Steph's back
in town. This is something that's been in the works
for a long time, but it officially becomes a reality
heading into the new year, and a very cool thing
happening at halftime with this game tonight.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah. So, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is going
to formally commemorate Exit thirty off of High seventy seven
as the Stephen Curry Interchange and so it'll have a
sign up right by exit thirty. And again this really
cool blending of Stephan Curry and Davidson and Davidson College
and what he's meant for for this community.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Are they actually changing the name of Griffith Street. Are
they changing the name of that road that leads toward
Davidson College off of the Highway.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
No, no, no, no, So you'll still have I heard
you guys are talking about the sign. It's Davidson Davidson College.
There'll be a separate sign. Oh, it's called the Stephen
Curry Interchange. And then if you think about it, the
best example I can always give is I've seen like
the North Carolina two thousand and eight Field Hockey Championships.
You've seen a sign somebody referenced as like a you know,
(03:10):
you know former military or you know, big community members
that they're honoring, and it's sort of in that vein
it'll be known as sort of the Stephen Curry Interchange.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
I love. So this is I love that they're getting
the Stephen Curry Interchange before there's ever a Pat McCrory
like interchange.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
You add to the list that the times he's been
passed over.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
If he's been passed over to name things for so.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Chris, So, so Steph's in the house tonight, and so
tell us if you're going to the game tonight, how's
this all going to play out?
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yeah, so number one, if you're going to the game,
I hope you already have a ticket. Yes, it is
sold out. We're going to have an absolutely packed house.
Stephan obviously, as you mentioned, is going to be playing
the Warriors for the Hornets tomorrow, and so he's coming
to the game tonight. We're gonna honor him right before
the game. Obviously. You know when we last talked, we
(04:01):
talked about him coming on board as an honorary general
manager assistant general manager, and we're going to honor hate
he and the Berman family for their support of our
program financially and otherwise. And then during halftime, the North
Carolina Department of Transportation is going to formally unveil a
replica of the sign and commemorate the Stephan Ferry entertaining.
That'll be our halftime entertainment. So it'll be a really
(04:23):
special time.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Have you had a conversation with the Curry family or
with Steph Curry himself. Is he super excited about this.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah. Absolutely, he's really really excited. This has been in
the works, as we all said before, and we were
going to try to do it last season. The timing
didn't work out, and one thing he said was, I
want to make sure that my family's able to attend.
So he's going to have like forty to fifty friends
and family and attendance. And so he's really really excited
that the timing worked out. They played last night, they
(04:51):
beat the Nets, got a day off today flying in
and then we'll get it in right before you know,
they played the Hornets tomorrow. So he's really really excited
to be back on campus.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
So when he comes back on campus, you know, does
he will he interact with the current team and and
you know, I know they have the official unveiling tonight.
But when Steph gets back on campus, does does he
get an opportunity to sort of hit the old haunts
much or with staph? I imagine that. I mean it's
like walking around and you've got a global star here,
(05:20):
but when you're back on campus, I'm sure there's the
desire to sort of, you know, walk around and see
the old place.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, we kind of give him free reign. Hey, whatever
you want to do. There's been time. The last time
he came on campus, he popped over to his old
dorm a few years back and knocked on the door,
and you know, the students that were living there couldn't
believe it was that. Yeah, I just wanted to see
it my own old dorm room look like. But he's
got you know, he interacted with the team this summer.
He did a mini camp with the men's basketball team
(05:49):
this summer in San Francisco for two days, right, and
built really good lates just then. So he's gonna probably
connect with them. After the game. A lot of his
former teammates will be in town, so I know he's
gonna want to see them. I mentioned his family and friends,
and so it's low key, nothing organized. I also know, look,
he's got a game at one o'clock the next day,
and knowing him, he's all about preparation and rest and
making sure he's ready to go. Always meant to put
(06:11):
on a good show when he's back home in Charlotte,
so you know, will hang out for a little bit,
but I could see him take it off and getting
some rest.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
What are the odds that it just happens to be
that his college is on Exit thirty. He's number thirty
and it's happening on December thirtieth.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Yeah, it's it's pretty it's pretty wild. You know, if
you think about it, we said we should have had
like a you know, ESPN, you know, thirty on thirty,
you know something, Yeah, thirty, Yeah on thirty. It's pretty wild.
You know, it's just it's it's pretty special. Obviously having
Exit thirty, you know, just teems so synonymous with him already,
(06:47):
and then you know, having this take place today, you know,
it's just we're just really excited for stuff. And he's
he's an incredible player, incredible to everybody knows that, but
he's a way better person. He's a way better human being,
and he's just an incredible and a representative of everything
David's and basketball, Davidson College and this entire community.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Well, and you, as athletic director can sort of talk
to this and we'll wrap it with this idea. But
you know, when when you're trying to introduce Davidson to
the world, and look, Davidson was a brand name before
Steph Curry got there. But it's much like the Michael
Jordan effect at North Carolina or any kind of player
like that. When you have somebody who becomes that big
(07:25):
of a star and then is still so open to
being part of the community on the on the back
end of that, it's just a I'm sure it puts
the universe or the college in a great position to
be able to sort of showcase not just basketball, but
everything that Davidson is.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, honestly, we don't ask much of Stefan. We just
asked him to wake up every morning and be himself
because we benefit. Honestly, he's just such a great person.
The work that he and his family do with his
Eat Lum Play Foundation in California and Oakland, the work
that he does with his non and he just gives
back and it's just so gracious with his time and
everything that he does. He's been super supportive of Davidson
(08:06):
with his Curry Scholarship for women's athletics, obviously supporting men's
basketball and women's basketball to the Curry Berman Fond. He's
just given so much and loved this place. And he's
just an incredible, as I said, ambassador and representative of
the best of what Davidson College is, So we're just incredibly,
incredibly fortunate. Every time, every moment we have to celebrate
him and honor him, we will do so. And that's
(08:28):
what we're looking forward to do.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
So tonight, well, you've got to be a pretty big
deal to have an exit named after you, Stephen Curry.
That exit number thirty there off of I seventy seven.
Davidson plays tonight at Ducane, will be in town and
the halftime show will be all about that official naming.
So look, Chris, I know it's a busy time, but
I thought it would be cool to get you on
this morning to sort of give people an idea of
(08:51):
what's happening tonight, and we really appreciate it and hope
you have a happy New Year.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, same to you both. Happy New Year and go
Cat
